You frown at her, ignoring the snark for now. "Karen has betrayed us." Morgan freezes in your grip, Sabina slowly lowering the cookie from her mouth as she looks at you. "So Mother called me back, we're leaving." You let her process for a second. "I want you to come with us."
She is silent, putting her snack down as she stares you down. Morgan tries to say something, but you squeeze your hand, your iron grip reminding her of her situation. When she does speak, it is with a slow and deliberate tone, as if speaking to a somewhat rabid animal. "Cerys, who is this Mother?"
You blink at her words, tilting your head slightly. "Gaia is Mother."
She very slowly nods, looking between you and Morgan, a conflicted look flittering across her face for a moment. Meanwhile, Morgan has stopped struggling entirely, letting her arm sag in your grip as she stands there passively. She opens her mouth but suddenly closes it, aborting what she was going to say as she looks back to you. "Karen betrayed us?"
You nod, noticing Una quickly jog back into the room. "She broke her promise and threatened my sister to make me stay." You shake your head, letting up on your grip a little. "I'm leaving, come with me? There will be lots of fighting."
You tack the bit on the end almost absentmindedly, but you don't miss the slightly interested look. She glances over to Morgan, who was being perfectly docile in your grip, not offering a word of protest or even defence for her boss-- her
Mother. "You got anything to say for her?" It good that she is at least checking facts, though her distrust does annoy you a little, your anticipation for the imminent future soothes the sting. Morgan remains silent, just standing in your grip.
Sabina presses her lips together, nibbling on a bit of her cookie before nodding. "Guess she is a lying bitch then." She swallows the rest of the cookie, quickly downing the entire glass of milk before turning to you. "You got a plan then? Or you just winging it?"
Una stops at your side, handing you both of your run bags; you ruffle her hair a little as you slide them onto each shoulder. "I do. Got anything you want to grab?" You need to wait for Daiyu to get back anyway. Sabina holds up a finger, thinking, and turns back to Morgan's cupboard. As she starts digging through it, you stretch out your thermal sense, immediately noticing the group of four making all haste for your room.
Now, how did you know? You check Karen's room and sure enough, she's there, though she's moving around a lot.
You push Una behind you, turning to where Sabina is shoving pretty much everything out of the cupboard that is wearable into a bag. "Might want to transform." She looks up at you over her shoulder, not stopping. "We've got company." She stops for a moment, her school uniform flowing over her as she plants her sword into the ground next to her. You turn your attention back to the Enforcers, well, they were probably Enforcers. You felt some kind of armour over them, it was distinctly colder than everything else and seemed to be sapping heat.
That heat absorbing armour those kids were wearing? Makes sense, never plan a betrayal without a trump card.
A slight curve pulls at your lips as you shrink your focus down to them, taking a grip on the heat in that corridor.
Let's see how well it works shall we?
You crank up the heat to it's maximum while simultaneously dropping it on the floor. It takes a moment, and they certainly notice considering the significant uptick in their speed, but when ice starts spreading across the ground they start jumping along the fucking walls.
Not gonna save you. You concentrate on the air right around them, heating it as quickly as you can and watching the armour devour it just as fast.
This isn't working, they are moving too fast for a place to get hot. You skip ahead several corridors, picking corners and setting the air alight.
The air quickly heats to sweltering, then hot enough that the paint starts melting and running down the stone. You feel them get to one of the corners and focus on that one, ramping it hotter and hotter. The leader stops, but one of the others apparently trusts his armour, kicking off of a wall and through the thinnest part of the fire.
You feel the temperature begin to tick downwards, the runes trying mightily, then smile slightly as you feel him start to
burn. His armour is evidently made out of something hard to melt, but
he isn't. You can't touch him, but you can feel his skin char, the roaring flames stealing his screams before they rush down his throat, desperate for what little oxygen remains.
He drops to the ground, flailing as your fires feast on him, the other three watching his slow demise helplessly. When his eyes start running down his face, they turn away, taking a longer route around. You quickly check on Daiyu, finding her walking back to you at a brisk pace, Enforcers around her practically running in the opposite direction. When she opens the door, you understand well enough, she has a long streak of blood across her torso and her blade is dripping across the carpet.
You suppress the slightly immature urge to make a joke and instead look back to the enforcers, finding them stumped at another corner.
That should be enough time. "Sabina, get over here." She steps back from the cupboard, dufflebag full of clothes over one shoulder and sword on the other. She pauses at Daiyu's bloody state, pouting for a moment as she moves next to you. Everyone gathered and ready to go, you look down at Morgan, her stoic face giving you nothing.
You pause, a quiet longing desire to just drag her with you, or to somehow talk her into leaving the Clocktower tugging at you. You close your eyes, take that little bit of your heart and lock it up, caging it with the chains of your fire. When you open your eyes, glowing red irises stare down at her, the slight glow reflecting off of her face.
"And you?"
She looks up for the first time since you said Mother's name, doing her best to keep composed. "I will stand aside." You silently beg her to ask to come with you,
something,
anything that you could use as an excuse to drag her with you. She steps back and you let go of her, fingers lingering on her skin for a moment, hand falling to your side as she turns her back to you. Your eyes feel wet, but that's silly, you aren't sad. You don't feel sad about this, it's just letting go of a traitor.
When you hear her sniffle, catching sight of a single tear running down her cheek you forcefully turn away from her, desperately ignoring your own wet face. "W-We're going. This is-" You have to stop and breath, your throat closing tightly. "This is goodbye."
She sucks in breath through her nose, a choked laugh forcing it's way out of her. "Not- Not goodbye, never goodbye." You clench your fist as you start building up magic, not able to bring yourself to fire while she's still talking. "Just, going away for a w-while." You hear water hit the ground, her slight hiccups making your heart feel like it's wrapped in barbed wire. She clears her throat and you can't stop yourself from looking back, seeing her heartbroken smile. "S-See you later?"
You want to run to her, to just stop and forgive her and make her understand. Your heart constricts tightly, an indescribable pain tearing into your chest as you force yourself to turn away, a distant light dimming behind you. You raise your sword towards the ceiling, letting your magic settle onto the metal for a moment.
"O-of course, s-see you l-later." You force your eyes to stay open as you let loose the spell, emotions rushing into the magic as it leaves you, a black-red hue flickering through the spell. "My very best friend."
The world disappears into white light as you feel your spell hit something and
bend, hitting itself and exploding. Daiyu stands in front of your and her sister, her shield warding off the scattered bits of debris. You stand there, letting them hit you, revelling in the pain as they tear into you.
When the dust fades, you burst forwards, Daiyu carrying the more vulnerable of the group. Somehow, you haven't blasted all the way to the surface and as you climb layer after layer, you realise how
enormous the base must be. After the eighth floor, someone steps forwards, a shaky burst of magic washing over you harmlessly. You dash towards them, shattering the arm holding a staff and locking your other around his face. He tries to cast something with his other hand, but you slam him into the ground, his skull giving way before the rune reinforced floor as a muffled scream is cut short.
You feel another bolt ping off of your shoulder and you spin around with a snarl, kicking a metal table at the intruder. She dodges it with a quick roll, a crackle of lightning rolling along her hand as she builds up a spell. The swords behind you give you the platform and you rush her, ploughing right through the flash of white.
(Thunderbolt: +525 Damage, +83 Dice, +50 Can't dodge Lighting = 658 Total Damage
Ignition Knight: +140 Base Resilience, +15 Dice, -25 Not trying to dodge = 130 Total Reduction
Ignition Knight Health: 2000 - 528 = 1472)
It
hurts, the electricity burns its way through you; more painful than any other spell you'd felt before, and it's still nothing to the gaping hole in your heart.
You completely disregard her attempts to put distance between you, grabbing her arm with a flaming gauntlet and pulling her to you. She tries to resist, reinforcement visibly lighting up along her skin in tribal patterns. It only slows you down for a moment as you slam your head into her. You take the slight pause and lock your fingers around her throat, she chokes on her breath; wide eyes staring at you as she tries to wriggle free. You scowl, rubbing the tears off of your face with your other hand as you clench your fist.
Clawed fingers rip through her skin with barely any resistance as you pull with your full strength; there is a brief pause as her body desperately tries to hold together before losing, her throat tearing free with a spray of blood. You drop her, ignoring her desperate wheezing as her fingers scrabble against her exposed spine and gasping for air that will never come.
Flicking the mangled bit of flesh off of your hand, you run back to your sister as you sense the room.
No-one else here. You glance over at Sabina, who was pulling her blade out of a half-dressed man's chest.
Anymore. You stretch your sense out further, finding yourself significantly closer to the surface than before, but still with an indeterminable distance waiting.
Fuck it. You stop next to Daiyu, letting the familiar spell build up in your sword.
This time, you feel your spell hit some sort of barrier, but it bends and pushes through with barely any effort at all. You don't bother thinking about it, taking a quick search through the base and finding Karen's room empty.
Time to go. You start forwards, going faster and faster until suddenly, you are in the open sky. You stop, letting Daiyu catch up as you float in the sky, looking down at the gaping hole you'd punched through Big Ben and deep into the ground.
I'm free. The thought doesn't bring you any joy, it just reminds you of what you left behind. You take a shuddering breath as Enforcers start jumping from the hole, some of them tattered and bloody, some of them covered in glowing shields. Floating a bit higher, you start summoning spears behind you, daring them to be the first to engage.
You feel Daiyu's shielding spell slip around you and apparently that is enough to spook one of the Enforcers, a razor sharp icicle shooting at you like a bullet.
(Ice Bullet: +75 Damage, +35 Dice, +15 Very fast = 125 Total Damage
Ignition Knight: +140 Base Resilience, +35 Dice, -25 Not trying to dodge = 150 Total Reduction
Ignition Knight Health: 1472 - 0 = 1472
Armoured Soul: +100 Health
Ignition Knight Health: 1472 + 100 = 1572)
The spell skitters off of your armour harmlessly, whistling off into the distance. Silence falls onto the battlefield as you turn to look at the dead man that shot at you.
The face of the bratty teenager from earlier in the day looks back at you, colour rapidly draining from his face as you lock eyes with him, two of your spears exploding forwards with a flash of flame. An older Enforcer tries to reach him, a half cast shield spell in hand when they impact. He barely has the time to raise his arms in a futile defence before they tear through him.
(Thermal Spear: +566 Damage, +68 Dice = 624 Total Damage
Thermal Spear: +566 Damage, +4 Dice = 560 Total Damage
James Harrison: +35 Base Resilience, +6 Dice, +50 Thermal Armour = 91 Total Reduction
James Harrison Health: 120 - 1093 = -973)
The first spear punches a gaping hole through his chest, you see a brief flash of white bone before the other collides with the armour, apparently finding it tough enough to detonate rather than tear through it. When the smoke fades, all that is left is a slagged chestpiece, a black outline and the smell of charred flesh on the wind.
The Enforcer who had tried to save him turns towards you, looking like he's about to attack you when two others grab his arms and pull him back as a shield starts shimmering over their group. Normally you might test out what it is, but you don't
give a fuck. It doesn't stop your ability to manipulate temperature, in fact, it contains heat excellently.
It doesn't take them long to realise what you are doing, not when their armour lights up like a star trying to dissipate the sudden raging inferno.
It might protect you from the heat, but you still need to breath. The shield wavers and fades, a strong wind spell dragging oxygen towards them and extinguishing the flames.
For a moment.
They jump to life, the air literally on fire as you take out your frustrations on them. A spell occasionally leaves the fire, but they don't even come close to hitting you, just further damaging the already precariously groaning building around them.
You almost want to stay and watch them burn, but you feel a gentle nudge at the back of your mind, reminding you of what you were actually doing.
I'm sorry. The feeling lightens and you let up on the fire, not caring to check if they are alive or dead, ignoring the fires hungrily feeding on the buildings around you.
Take us now. You feel a hand ruffle your hair and you are gone, the cool air of your new home greeting you on your arrival.
You hear a crackling and realise that you are sat in the armchair you'd seen earlier, Gaia sprawling across the arm and your shoulder, Una nestled into your lap. You look up, a snapping noise drawing your attention to the fire happily blazing away in it's place; your rapidly beating heart sounds like a drum. Soothing whispers caress your ear as she strokes your hair and you hug your sister against you, her hugging you lightly as well. You ignore the throbbing pain the lightning left behind, rapidly fading as it is and bury your face into her hair.
You try to stay strong for your sister, but she doesn't react when silent tears drip onto her head, just hugging you tighter. You cry yourself to sleep for the first time in years, reassured by the silent presence of your family around you.
Sabina POV
You step outside, unable to bear the sight inside, memories of things forever gone coming to the forefront as you stare at the sky.
A few steps to the left and you sit down, resting your shoulder against the wooden post, fingering your jeans as you sigh.
What a fucking mess. You hear the door click open behind you, Cerys partners sister stepping out and shutting it behind you, claiming a spot next to you. She smiles at you, looking entirely fake as you desperately try to remember her name. She opens her mouth to say something and pauses, apparently not finding the words.
You and me both lady.
You desperately feel the urge to do
something right now, anything to fill the awkward silence. Thankfully she turns back to you. "Why did you come?"
"Why did you?" The response is more a reflex than anything else, but the biting tone was entirely intentional.
She leans back a little, surprised at your vehemence, but does answer. "My sister going, how could I leave her?"
You grunt and turn away, looking back at the sky as she stares at you expectantly.
'S a pretty bird. A large, multicoloured bird, wings tipped with claws flies past. You follow it with your eyes, using it as an excuse to delay your answer. When it finally passes out of sight, you sigh and glance at her out of the corner of your eye. "I trust her more than I trust those assholes." She continues staring until you look away, continuing quietly. "And she can give me the fights I want."
She doesn't say anything, letting out a long hum as she turns to stare at the sky as well, several minutes passing in silence. Just when you think she'll actually keep quiet, she turns back to you, standing up and dusting her legs off as she speaks. "They probably put her to bed now, I saw them taking her upstairs." She waits for a response, continuing a little awkwardly when you remain silent. "I'm going back inside." She pauses to see if you'll join her, leaving when you don't react.
Finally. You turn your attention back to the sky, watching the tiny little streams of light ebb and flow through the clouds. It was like nothing you'd ever seen before. You watch them, idly humming as you enjoy the moon shining down on you through the leaves.
Wait, Moon? You sit up, groaning as stiff muscles protest to being used so suddenly.
When did the moon rise? You look down, a blanket sliding off of you as you move.
Did I fall asleep? You think about that, and someone catching you, then putting a blanket over you without waking you up. You do your best to suppress your embarrassed blush, memories of the past tickling the edge of your mind.
Nope, not going to don't think about it. You stand up, catching the blanket before it can fall and stretching your arms, your muscles slowly giving way as you force them.
Ahhh, that's better.
You fold the blanket, setting it under your arm as you step back into the house, a full table watching you.
Umm. Una quickly jumps up from the dinner table, grabbing you by the arm and dragging you closer.
Jeez, she's strong. You inspect her closer.
Is that... Reinforcement? Am I being outdone by a nine year old? You don't pout as she leads you to your seat, plopping you down in front of a plate and scampering back to hers. The boss gives you a lazy glance, looking much more like her normal self after a few hours of sleep; her blotchy cheeks the only evidence it happened.
Good, seeing her like that was... weird.
You do your best to forget the memory, turning to your plate and digging in, the familiar taste of a roast dinner making you stop thinking and start eating.
When you finish, setting your fork and knife down on the table, Cerys comes around collecting plates. She quickly conscripts her sister's help in washing and drying them, but that only brings up a question in your mind. "Umm, Cerys." She looks over her shoulder at you, looking all too natural in an apron.
Dammit Brain. "Where are we?" You felt like it was a fair question, considering recent events.
She turns back to her washing up and calls over her shoulder. "A giant turtle in the middle of nowhere."
You nod at her words, turning back to the table and taking a sip of your drink.
Good milk. You slowly put the cup back down when you realise. "I'm fairly sure you just said 'A giant turtle'. Gonna have to run that one by me again." She just nods and you ignore the way her sister repeats the word turtle to herself over and over again. You sit back in your seat, looking at the...
motherly looking woman sitting at the table with you. "Uhhh-huh. Alright then." You lean back, but can't resist a question that pops into your mind. "So, how do we have utilities." Bosslady tilts her head to the side. "We're on a turtle, where are we getting electricity and gas from."
She raises her finger then pauses, turning to look at the mystery woman sitting at the table. "That, is a very good question."
Mystery woman just smiles. "Magic."
You snort at her answer. "Alright then, I'm guessing you are
Mother?" Cerys blush is
delicious and the amused smile mystery woman gives only makes it grow stronger. "And your name is Gaia...?" You trail off questioningly, not letting your thoughts show.
What sort of person is named after the titan of the earth? Wait, as in Gaia Gaia? She just nods at your question, turning back to smirking at your boss.
I guess this makes her the boss boss? You shrug as you think about it.
So long as she doesn't order me around.
Cerys turns around as she finishes washing the cutlery, pulling the pink apron off, the colour complimenting her blush perfectly. She bundles it up and throws it over a chair, shaking her head as she steps towards the table. "I'm going to go exploring in a little bit, a nice walk to let the meal go down, does anyone want to come with?" She doesn't bother looking at Una and you know she'll be attached to her leg like a limpet, Daiyu glances at her sister and shakes her head.
Probably going to have a loving sister on sister moment. A moment passes and you drop your head onto the table, rattling everything on it.
That sounded way worse than I meant it to.
Gaia lady looks over at you, an amused smile on her face and you sit upright before she can say anything. "Yeaup I'll come, I need to get some fresh air." You hear Una mumble something about you already having gotten lots of fresh air and narrow your eyes at her. "
More fresh air, it's good for you." Gaia snorts, as does Cerys, but neither of them protest. So you quickly stand up, not having taken your shoes off and go back outside, leaning against the porch fence as you wait for them.
They come out a little while later, Cerys sporting a furious blush as she tries to avoid looking at you and Una giggling quietly to herself. "Do I even want to know?" She manages a glance at you, her blush only growing stronger as she shakes her head. "Thought not." You spin on the spot, looking over into the distance and pointing a finger. "Let's go...
that way."
Cerys looks over, nodding after a moment. "Alright, we have seven hours or so before we're needed." She continues at your curious
Oh? "We're going to be attacking both the Counter Force and the Clocktower, hitting their front lines."
You don't bother to suppress your smile, a tiny little shiver running down your spine. "Oh bosslady, you bring me the
best gifts." She just smiles at you as you turn and start walking quickly,
not skipping, in the direction you'd chosen.
