Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

@Rukia

Question: Can the Demons utilize regular monsters to carry out their biddings? I expect so, however I am not sure... If this is true, we might have a war on two fronts.
That depends on whether they are smart enough to try, and if any creatures actually take them up on the offer.

Either way, let us just ask the person in the know:
@Rukia, could Gaia keep up the barrier by herself?
As it is now?
Yes.

If it was actually being attacked by everything that could be?
No.

That depends on whether they are smart enough to try, and if any creatures actually take them up on the offer.

"Hey, we're having a party in that other dimension once the barrier around it flickers out. Want to join?"
"Hm... sounds goo-wait. Wasn't that where this anomaly came from?"
"Uh... maybe?"
":o"

I kind of doubt the latter.

Besides, why would they need magical creatures when things like this exist in their ranks anyway?

All of that in due time. :drevil:
Thermal Control already grows faster than almost any other Ability, simply because it is something we can use near-constantly.
Although I would rather not go into trying to make storms aside from Blizzards before we hit lv40-50 on that; getting some light snowfall was already difficult enough.

Oh, brute forcing the storms should be damn hard and take that much. But messing with the setup of the storm? Nudge things just right in just the right places?

A slight raise in the temperature/humidity of rising air, and you get a Thunderstorm. Increasing the temperature of an area decreases the air pressure of that area somewhat, resulting in, at a minimum, increased wind speed - and depending upon where the air pressure was decreased, increase the odds of major storms. Tweak things differently, adjust the direction and/or severity of storms already in progress, for good or ill.

Hell, just go around the Atlantic or Pacific oceans and raise the water temperature by a couple of degrees, that'll probably trigger and/or feed a few hurricanes. Somewhat indiscriminate, alas.

Er, wouldn't they be working with the creatures native to our dimension?

Better to nip that sort of BS in the bud. If that wolf had been working alongside something with eyes in the sky it would have been much, much harder to deal with.

Why would they? Earth is not the only world... and definitely not the only one with magical wildlife.

Ah, right.
I just remembered the reason that human mages can keep up with other races despite being far less powerful. They do things like this, while everyone else just conjures up a whole storm and keeps it active.

However, this would require Cerys to actually learn how storms are made.
We really need to get her back to studying...

No.

So we are fighting an army of mindless beasts with possibly some smart ones interlaced....

We at least have the intelligence advantage.

Of course Karen is going to play XCOM, but you seem to assume that we will be the commander. Which is not going to happen.
We will be one of the troopers, who goes out to kill stuff when told to.

I am aware of this, I am merely suggesting a strategy the enemy might use and how we, as a soldier, can prepare for it.

Eeeh, point.

Still better to cut off one front, whether they work together or not.

Knowledge is Power, learn well.

Eh, it is not so much intelligence as it is creativity. All other races are sentient and can be spoken to.
They just have different values and social norms is all.

They are just really bad at... lateral thinking, I guess.

And... well, the reason we are this way is Gaia:
Humans
Level 999
Attacks Per Turn: Yes
Affinity: Earth | Fire | Wind | Water | Lightning | Magic
Ability: Auto Assault | Autonomous Combat | Evolution of Warfare

Ah, well, Does the enemy at least have an overall commander of sorts, Or are they an unorganized swarm? We might have an advantage if they are unorganized, Despite their numbers.

IIRC, demons have more of a feudal command structure wherein you report to someone stronger than you, who reports to someone stronger than them, and so on until you get to the Dark Lord.

[X] Tell them that Gaia took you.
-[X] She showed the barrier breaking and the enemy beyond it. Explain that strange cracks in the sky show this.
--[X] Explain that she showed more things to you, but that they may not be relevant to the Clocktower's operations. If they urge you to explain everything that occurred, do so.

[X] Tell them that Gaia took you.
-[X] get something to write with immedietly. Write down everything you can remember about your vision. Let your boss know.

This is tied with

[X] Tell them that Gaia took you.

Gimme a tie-breaker here, 'cause Cerys isn't in a particularly sharing mood.

Aaaand locked.

Just going to mention that it wasn't actually a Vision and Cerys knows it wasn't, so I'll just amend that to 'Write down everything you can remember.'

REUNION
You open your mouth to speak, but what comes out isn't what you had intended.

[GAIA

Everyone in the room flinches backwards, Una practically tearing herself from your chest as the thing echos out. It's clumsy and half-formed, nothing at all like what you knew it should be, but the mangled mess was more than enough to rock everyone in the room. Not that it didn't hit you just as hard, you felt something twist and crunch horribly as the taste of blood bloomed in your mouth. You curl over, just about resisting the urge to make another sound as crippling pain wracks your body.

Eventually you feel the pain recede somewhat as your magic goes about healing whatever damage it caused, but there was still a lingering echo of something. You slowly sit up, turning your eyes to where the occupants of the room were slowly regaining their bearing. Daiyu had already steadied herself and had drawn her sword, looking around frantically before settling on you, calming when you look fine. Slowly, the other occupants of the room regain their standing, though Morgan looks like she's been hit by a truck. When your eyes cross Una, lying limply at the end of the bed and gently crying, you feel your heart tear in two.

You ignore the lingering pain and lunge forwards, scooping her up in your arms and gently curling over her. Your magic hangs heavy in the air, cracks racing along the wooden panels of the bed as you bring everything you have to bear around the two of you. You hear distant shouts as you focus on the only thing that matters to you, shutting out the world as you frantically race magic across her skin, not quite daring to reach into her after what your magic had caused.

Eventually, you feel a tiny twitch in one of her arms and your eyes jump to her face. A single eye is open, just enough for you to see it unclouded and focused clearly on your face. You let out a sigh of relief as you slump, Una's arms shakily grasping you. You slowly let your magic dissipate, the rest of the world coming into focus as you sit up, gently draping Una across your lap and holding her close.

Daiyu is the first to close, dropping to a knee with a harsh thud of her armour. "Sister! Are you ok?"

You manage a tired nod as Morgan gingerly leans against the wall, bloodshot eyes looking you over. "What was that?"

You reflexively open your mouth to speak, but quickly close it again, looking around for something to write on. Cuifen evidently gathers your intents and reaches over to the table beside her, grabbing the first piece of paper and pencil she can find before handing them to Morgan, who sets them on your lap.

You start writing, holding up your sheet when you are done. Word but not a word. I don't know what it was. You quickly scribble out your next sentence. Gaia spoke it.

When the rest of the room reads your words, the silent tension that had already been there grew thicker. Morgan practically growled as Daiyu tightened her grip on her sword. You cast a confused glance over to Cuifen as the sole calm person in the room. She frowns slightly as she looks sideways at her sister. "Clocktower was convinced of death, said gone beyond where could be found. Thought might be Gaia." Her frown deepens as her lips tighten. "They try to convince Daiyu to take your place. Una not take it well."

You tighten your grip on Una as your thoughts race. Trying to replace me in just six days? A deep frown splits your face as you turn your eyes to your... friends. Morgan is muttering something over and over to herself while Daiyu is staring at you with a sharp intensity. You see her eyes twitch, holding her eyelids open with pure willpower, but her focus is absolute. Una shifts in your lap, eyes dry as whatever you had done faded.

You want to stand up, find Karen and try to find out what the fuck she was thinking, but Una is more important now. You have a brief thought of writing down what had happened but... you were never going to be able to forget what had happened. Just the thought of that felt wrong.

You settle back against the bed, gently resting Una against you again as you keep your mouth shut. You awkwardly scribble out your words. I want to talk to her, as soon as Una is asleep I'm going. Cuifen, can you watch her?

She nods at you, Morgan slowly nodding as well, almost falling with the movement as she forces her eyes open. She much be exhausted. Cuifen leans in from her chair to whisper to you. "Morgan only get hour of sleep at a time, whenever she pass out in middle of research." You turn your eyes to her as her lingering frown grows stronger, hands gripping the chair tight enough for the wood to creak. "Daiyu stand guard over disappearance place. She not sleep."

You feel your breath catch in your throat as you turn to look at your friends, completely dumbfounded at the lengths they had gone through to try and get you back. Morgan is quickly sipping from a cup that you had assumed was tea, but when you look closer you see Coffee, and she hates Coffee. Daiyu looks absolutely shattered, but is still standing strong, ready to defend you.

Even as you look, Morgan struggles to stay awake, eyelids fluttering constantly as she slowly leans against the wall next to her. She eventually loses the fight, eyes sliding closed as she falls asleep, standing against the wall with her mug of Coffee still held steady. Daiyu still stands ready, fully transformed and looking to you for direction.

Why do they try so hard? Why do they care? You repress the urge to cry, nodding solidly at Daiyu as she waits for you. Let Morgan sleep, we will go. She nods at your words, not moving from her spot.

It doesn't take Una long to fall asleep, a combination of gently stroking her hair and your warmth later and she's out like a light. You gently shift her off of you, leaving your hoodie wrapped around her so she can sleep properly as you stand, armour and weapon forming around you as you go.

Daiyu walks alongside you as you make for the door, your movements syncing together as you take step after step.

Take our place in what sense?
Take our place as Unas sister?
Take our place as a military asset?
Take our place in whichever weird dream world Gaia put us into?

I'm guessing the last time something like this happened they never saw the poor bastard again

Still

Take our place as a military asset, I assume.
Karen is... nice but pragmatic. She might grow fond of her weapon but at the end of the day it is still a weapon to her. Gotta remember for all that she gave that speech about how Magical Girls are needed to fight these threats that normal men could never hope to match, she is still sending those normal people out with you as what amounts to meat shields.

I get us being super upset about this... but I also get Karen as well.

She's lived for so long she's detached and moved into playing war games.

Lmao, none of this has a happy ending, it seems.

I hope there aren't any lingering effects on Una.
Trying to replace me in just six days? A deep frown splits your face as you turn your eyes to your... friends.
Wow, that's cold. I mean I could understand if Karen asked Daiyu to take over while Cerys was out but it's surprising she was so quick to count us down for the count. Maybe we'll see more from her side but it probably still won't look good.

Just in general take our place, be her nuclear option against the stronger enemies, to have Daiyu do what we've been doing is my guess. To have her replace us as Una's sister it too fucked up in my opinion. She wouldn't dare.

Closest thing I can guess is the magical girl who bonded with the barrier, Karen knew her and we don't know if she had a talk with Gaia before doing that. So maybe she assumed the worst?

Also did our jaw or vocal cords actually break from taking in that language?

Note to self: from this point onwards, any vote stretching over several days has the mystery box-/exotic options placed last.

What confuses me a little is why there is a vote when there is no vote. This is no choice, it is just a stopping point for little reason.
(No vote from me, seeing that there is no difference between the options)

Anyway, I am not really sure whom to be more annoyed with; Gaia for taking us away like that (we know she can just show up in person), or Karen for having that little trust in us.
Either way, it shows that there are now three people Cerys can put her trust in; this does not count Una, seeing that that was already the case before.
Sadly, she will probably have a relapse into her wary behaviour due to that part about Daiyu replacing her.

I really hope Karen can defuse the situation... or there might be bad things happening.

The deal with Karen was always a business deal, unlike our personal relations to Daiyu and Morgan.
She is concerned with her country and it's people first and foremost. If an asset gets lost, she'll try to attain a new one of course.

I believe she only tried to have Daiyu replace us as military asset. Just cause we are presumed dead, she still has a job to do.

Which makes sense and all... but...
Trying to replace me in just six days?
While Cerys is aware of the fact that this is Karen's duty, it did happen a little quick. And she (Karen) should have known that.

Edit: now that Cerys is not as dead as everyone thought, she is understandably annoyed about being written off that easily.

We've got a lot of data that needs sharing ASAP.

Prep time until a possible end of the World, countdown is ticking, feelings can wait until the major news is given.

Honestly, Karen will be relieved that Cerys is okay, for many reasons. Whether Cerys is in the right state of mind to notice is a different matter.
