"Why did it affect you so much? I didn't feel anything at all."
Her grimace deepens as she thinks harder on what happened. "Ugh, it was..." She squeezes her eyes shut before she opens them. "Awful." She sighs. "I can sense magic pretty well at a close range and I'm focused on the natural world right?" You nod. "What I could sense happening inside your barrier was just..." She has a complicated look on her face. "Fuuuuck." She says it as she breaths out heavily. "I'm sorry, I just can't describe it, I don't have the words."
you have two choices steal shit from magic beasts and where to find them or create a skill basic knowledge, where you roll on actually encountering the animal and have them talk about a single animal like the lock ness monster.

But you also could just give us a Skill like "Knowledge: Magical Creatures", where higher ranks give Cerys knowledge about more rare or unknown beings.
Then you just have to have an idea about how much people know about any given creature you want to introduce; when our knowledge is good enough, have Cerys remember the data once she encounters them.
It could level naturally by actually meeting new creatures or hearing about them.
At least, this is the easiest way to do it I can see. That would spare you from having to think up everything right now as well.
Hmm, at least for inspiration and ideas I'd recommend "A Practical Guide to Monsters" by Nina Hess. It's an impressive bestiary having things I had never seen before as monster.... I just can't find a place online to see it, I mean I have the book right now but that doesn't do much good. I did find a few sites that claim to have it but they all ask for me to sign up so....
Or try Volo's guide to monsters, it's... similar just not as good in my opinion. At least I Could find it though so there's that.
Just scroll down and click the link and it's there.
You look to your sides, finding Morgan and Una both still dead asleep, though Una's neck is currently bent into a very uncomfortable looking position. You reach over and gently shift her head so that her spine is straight again, and you see a slight tension on her face disappear as you do so. You settle back into your place, absent-mindedly stroking her hair and she shifts towards you, even though she was nearly on top of you as she was. You sigh a little, shifting to the side so that she slowly slides off of you, but she grabs you in a tight grip and hold fast.
You give off a gentle sigh, gently rocking her in your arms until you see her eyes start to flutter open. She looks up at you with blank eyes, before she blinks and climbs off of your lap. You follow after her, giving Morgan a quick glance to make sure she's still asleep, which she is. Then you follow after Una and have a bath, get dressed and make breakfast. This time you make jam on toast, nice and simple. You see Morgan starts to wake to the smell of food being cooked and set her plate out on the table. She's up within a minute and at the table.
Breakfast was silent, Morgan sleepily shuffling off with a thank you to wash after she finishes eating, as you and Una wash up. When you are all finished and standing around Morgan's living room, you decide on what you are going to do today. First things first, you are going to do some research on other common-ish magical creatures you might fight. You probably should have done this sooner, but after yesterday you want to know now. You give Una a questioning look when you explain and she nods, Morgan says she'll stay here and relax for a while, but you can ask her any questions when you return.
You set out for the Library, ignoring the other early risers as you make your way through, the bleary-eyed Librarian directing you towards a specific book. Once you retrieve it, you settle down on one of the armchairs as Una perches herself on the arm. You flick open the book to it's first page and read through, it's an Index of various different magical creatures, exactly what you were looking for. Morgan probably had one of these, now you think about it. Oh well, no harm done.
You flick the book open to the first entry, Alerune's.
Harmless flying critters. Created by an experimental mixture of magic density and a decades long breeding program. Mostly live in captivity, as they are obviously magical to normal observation. Nothing of particular note, apart from the fact they use magic to help themselves fly.
You frown as you look through the index again, thankfully it appears to have a 'harmful' indicator next to names in the index to help you sort it. You flip to the first one on the list. The Serpens Venandi, otherwise known as the Razorback. You wonder at the name until you get a good look at the picture.
You jerk back from the picture on the table before you even think about it, nearly throwing the book across the room. Jesus fuck! What the fuck. You calm down as you look at the description of the fuckoffhuge snake. Lives primarily in swamps, can survive in nearly any temperature. Feeds on meat rarely and is incredibly difficult to find when hibernating. Is thought to be biologically immortal as the oldest specimen is still alive after three thousand years. The last line nearly makes the book slip through your fingers. Is capable of speech and thought at a level of a Young Human, older specimens have been observed to be more intelligent as they age.
You take a shaky breath and look at the page further. This creature prefers to hide in murky water and hibernate for long periods of time, thus it's primary form of attack is ambush from stealth. If they are noticed, they will often decline pursuit in favour of regaining stealth. Older specimens have been noticed luring people in with speech or noises and have been seen learning from their experiences. There are records of Razorbacks who started ambushing from trees once they learned that they are watched less than the ground. It has been confirmed that they have a very rudimentary form of magic and can learn and create new magic.
When it attacks, it bites down on it's prey and begins coiling around them. The spines on it's back cut deeply into the prey as it does this and they also serve as a way to protect the Razorback from any attempts to loose it from it's prey. It is not venomous, however it's teeth and spine often carry a significant amount of bacteria from being constantly submerged in a swamp environment. If you somehow manage to survive a bite or cut from one, you must immediately seek medical care.
It's teeth are several times stronger than normal Keratin formed structures as are it's spines, it has been considered that magic is involved in some way, but any specimens open to conversation have refused to share on this matter. The armoured scales on it's back are slightly stronger than steel, roughly 30% stronger for the same thickness and they maintain an unexpected flexibility, the scales on the underbelly are softer, however they are still strong enough to deflect gunfire and most melee weaponry. The entire body has a mild resistance to magic that grows with age and size.
If combat is unavoidable, recommended course of action is to somehow deafen and blind the target, flashbangs are recommended as are scent bombs. Once it is blinded, focus on one area to piece the scales, the internals are completely unarmoured. Once enough damage has been done, mobility will be lost, after this point you should endeavour to somehow sever the spine or cut the Razorback in two. It can survive this, so be sure to continue internal damage until it's eyes stop glowing, this is a sure sign of it's death as it is involuntary.
You gently put the book down on the table as you look at Una, her face is slightly white and her eyes are still glued on the picture of the Snake. You gently brush her cheek with your hand and she snaps out of it, picking up the book and looking a mixture of horrified and amazed. She quickly flicks back to the index and picks out another.
Nightcrawler.
This thing is ugly, but at least it isn't as horrifying as the fucking snake. Lives in heavily forested areas, mainly mountainous if possible and prefers colder temperatures. Feeds on meat and attacks during the night. They have fairly short life-spans, the longest on record is eight years. Is not capable of higher thought, though they are capable of pack tactics and traps.
This creature attacks in packs, they find a solitary target once the sun has gone down and creep close. Once they are close enough, they will attack from stealth, tearing at the target with their claws and teeth. They are known to let out a horrific screeching noise as they attack that is both greatly disorienting and a way for them to communicate. They have excellent hearing and decent night vision.
Their claws are not stronger than naturally occurring creatures, however they have very strong wrist muscles and can dig them into a target with surprising strength. Their primary method of killing is to jump onto a target and latch on, they then continue attacking the target with their claws and mouth until they die. They are adverse to light and do not approach it willingly, they will also never attack while spotted, even if they are starving.
If you come into combat with these creatures, the best method is to create some form of light and keep it going until the sun rises. If this is impossible, then they are individually fragile, but highly agile, wide area attacks are recommended. Their skin is leathery, but thin enough that a blunt knife could pierce it and the spines on their arms and head are purely residual, they serve no purpose. They will retreat as soon as they take damage, however their pack-mates will continue attacking until every one of them has taken at least some damage or killed the target.
Una flicks to the index again, picking a random 'harmful' name. Rancent Nightmare, whoo boy, this is gonna be something.
You don't drop the book this time, you were expecting something horrifying and boy were your expectations surpassed. You look over to Una, but she's just passed over the picture with a glance and is reading the information quickly. With a sigh, you look yourself. Lives in lowland swamps, can only survive there. Feeds on anything living that it can find. Their life-span is not known, because of their tendency to attack everything and the fact that they die in captivity. Is capable of some form of higher thought, likely due to it's form of reproduction. Reproduction? Well, that's ominous as fuck.
This creature is not actually the form you see above. It is a parasite that burrows into a living being and mutates their body. The new host body exists for the sole purpose of seeking out life and infecting it, thankfully because of it's environment, it's spread is limited to swamplands. It attacks by simply beating their opponent with their limbs, depending on what body they are inhibiting. Once their prey have been knocked down, they will try to inject them, usually via bite, stab or mouth to mouth regurgitation. Once prey is infected, they are released and the host is directed towards searching for new prey. Their hearing and sight vary depending on which body they are inhabiting, but it is generally accepted that the conversion degrades the hosts senses.
Their mutated anatomy is some form of wood, though it has been seen flexing like skin and muscle before. It is not magically tough, however it is strong enough to be mildly immune to firearms and melee weaponry. Explosions or blunt melee weaponry are recommended. Fire is ineffective as their body has a significant water content and mildly fire retardant bark, this combining with the wet environment of a swamp makes fire inadvisable.
If you enter combat with this creature, the best method is to somehow destroy the legs and retreat. If this is impossible, destruction of the entire body is necessary, as the parasite can control the body without a brain if it is transformed enough. They are significantly stronger and faster than they appear in all forms, though they have difficulty with tight turns or acrobatic movement. Do not assume the creature is dead until you have destroyed the parasite with your own eyes, otherwise you may find yourself being attacked when your guard is down.
You look a little further down and find another paragraph, listed under Biohazard Thread.
The parasites are capable of transmitting themselves into nearly all creatures, magical or not. There is heavy speculation that they are a created species, as their restriction to just swamplands is incredibly unlikely to occur naturally. If a specimen is encountered, retreat and inform the nearest magical official as soon as possible. A potential outbreak could be devastating and it is the duty of all magical beings who encounter them to ensure they are destroyed.
You put down the book there. That is quite enough for today I think. You close it and stand, stretching out your spine as you go. "I'm going to go and practice with Morgan for a while, if she is free." Una nods as she picks up the book, you check it out at the reception and make your way back to your room, Una in tow.
Morgan looks up when you enter, book in hand. "Found what you wanted?"
You sigh as you look at the book in Una's hand. "Yes. Can I just say that magical creatures are fucking scary?"
Morgan laughs a little at that. "Ah, you went down the harmful list, didn't you?" You nod. "Yeah, there are some real fucking nasty things in the world. But there are a lot of cute and friendly ones as well, you should read about the Lesser Fox Youkai over in Japan." She smiles. "Little guys are more than happy to help you braid your hair and clean your house, so long as they can live there. Really helpful and cheerful little things, best housemaid you could ask for." The image of a tiny little fox dragging around a broom in it's mouth, sweeping, hits you and makes you giggle. The best part is that your mental image might even be right.
You shake off your thoughts as you look back to Morgan. "You doing anything?" She looks at her book and shakes her head. "Want to train with me? I have a couple of ideas I can work on down here."
Morgan looks lightly amused. "Are you going to destroy the training room, because you said it was fine last time." A blush creeps up your neck at the thoughts of your previous... accident. "But yeah, I'm down for that. A quick hand to hand spar?" You nod as you set out to the door, Una still flicking through that book as you go.
Your fight with Morgan goes about as you would expect, fast, brutal and ending in your loss. You do better, but she is both better than you, faster and stronger. You rub off your bruises as you move into a large vacant area to do a little experimenting. You summon your sword with it's flash of blue light, assembling itself in your hands. You lift it onto your shoulder, resting the back there as Morgan stares at the gigantic blade that is your weapon. She lets out a long whistle before smiling. "That's pretty impressive." You smile a little. "Explains why we needed to get a two-handed teacher over here. I probably could have taught you the basics of a one-hander, but not that."
You nod as you look over your blade, lowering it and holding the flat of the blade in one hand, the other on the handle. Despite it burning extremely hot, you only feel a gentle warmth on your skin, it was comfortable. You roll your shoulders as you take it into a two handed grip, pulsing your magic slightly along it, watching the lines flow into existence along it. This time, they don't rush across you, like they did in your armour, but they still extent a little onto your skin, but not by much. You hum as you think about it, but decide to just go for it. So you send a steady stream of magic into your sword.
All of a sudden, all of the lines along the blade light up brightly, the edge going from a gentle blue to a blazing fire. You can smell the ozone in the air and when you move your sword, there is a very slight something that trails after it. Your eyes can't make it out and neither can your magical senses, but there is something there. Whatever it is, it fades a bare second after it forms, but it follows your blade perfectly.
You consider giving your sword a swing, but you remember your promise not to damage anything and just stop feeding it magic. It stays lit for a second or two before it fades back to it's normal state, the invisible after-image disappearing as well.
You look up to see Morgan looking at it strangely, but not in pain as she was the other day. "What is it?" She shakes her head as she walks over, Una trailing after her a little, though her eyes are still glued to your sword.
"Firstly, that was hot. Second, what was the... thing your sword was doing." You tilt your head, even though you have a pretty good idea as to what she asking. "That... there but not there thing that was following it?"
You shake your head. "I have no idea, I noticed it, but I couldn't see anything there." You both sigh, stupid confusing magic sword thing. You decide to spend the rest of the day, the next five hours or so trying to deal with the information overload that comes with using your sense in the city. You sat on Morgan's sofa, legs crossed and leaned back, Una by your side as you focused.
You slowly extended your range to cover the entire base, a little problematic, but not too bad. The two? three? hundred people here was a manageable number. When you extended it above ground there was a lot more than three hundred people. You had to retract and extend your range dozens of times, but you slowly acclimatised to feeling so much. You couldn't sense things as well as you could up close, but you could actually use it in a range of thirty metres without wanting to tear your brain out through your eyes.
You sigh as you help Morgan make dinner, progress was progress, but you were kind of missing your semi-omnipotence of nearly a mile. You felt kind of blind. Still, you adjust the temperature inside the oven slightly, to keep it even, it could be worse.
Dinner was nice, Morgan shared with you a few fluffier creatures. Ones that existed to help lost people, ones that saved drowning sailors. There were a lot of nicer ones.
You went to sleep with rough dreams. Seeing your sister, always out of your reach and mere inches from the mouth of a Racent Nightmare.
You don't let her leave your hug for three hours.

Hmmm... I wonder if we could somehow use our Beginning affinity to create multiple threads of thought. Though, we should wait to have a much higher control over our magic before trying.
Edit: We could also train ourselves into filtering in only specific patterns inside our mind.
So! Next update we're finally meeting Jeanne, right?
And since the training area is repaired by now, we can probably finish experimenting with Infinity Edge: Spell Boost. Maybe by swinging the sword while we're channeling magic through it?
We can also work on our Flight or Plasma Sphere. If we're training Flight, I suggest we hold some weights while doing it. As for the Plasma Sphere, we should only focus on moving it for now.
So, how about some Infinity Edge:Spell Boost experimentation on Monday, Flight training on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Plasma Sphere practice on Thursday and Friday? It should give us enough experimentation to buy Spell Boost from the shop (although we still need Competent Bladed Weaponry), and it should train Flight and Plasma Sphere concurrently with equal amounts of attention. Hopefully we can speed up our flight and learn to control our Plasma Sphere then.
Besides, @Rukia, could you maybe give us the stat-changes a level-up causes? That would be very nice...
Now for a vote.
[] Monday: Get Plasma Sphere to remain stable even when you move it
[] Tuesday: Look into the effect your sword has once you push magic into it; do it outside this time to test properly (Spell Boost)
[] Wednesday: Train Flight; you need to get faster
-[] While you are at it, see if you can carry things with you without them weighing you down; if this is still the case, see if you can find a way to stop it
[] Thursday: If Plasma Sphere still does not work, get around to working with that again
-[] If it is usable, work on Push; concentrate the effect on a smaller area, maybe that will help increase the force behind it. (Maybe you can apply the same method you use for Flight?)
[] Friday: Train Thermal Spear
My thoughts behind this:
-the least straining activities (Flight and Spell Boost) are on Tuesday and Wednesday, when we have swording lessons also.
-Plasma Sphere has to be ready; the second training option is there just in case we get another low roll on Monday
-I would like to get Push usable as well; it is our only means of crowd control at the moment
-I ran out of ideas for Friday, so I just put in to exercise with our currently most important spell
I am not sure about Friday, though; should I put Thermal Sense there instead, so Cerys can expand her reach even in crowded areas?
Plasma sphere explodes. I doubt much can survive that. If not, incineration aura is more than strong enough at this point to obliterate those gnomish wood creatures.

Morgan's wording is interesting. It implies our sword's trails are virtual (i.e. denoting particles or interactions with extremely short lifetimes and indefinitely great energies, postulated as intermediates in some processes). Which makes sense if we think of Infinity as the merging of Beginning and End.
While training with our sword, we should try to unleash a wave of energy with a burst of magic channeled through it.
Plasma sphere explodes. I doubt much can survive that. If not, incineration aura is more than strong enough at this point to obliterate those gnomish wood creatures.
I meant the training grounds, but was too lazy to write it out in the vote.
Additionally, you might be one step too far towards telekinesis there; first comes the momentum, then comes the direction.
But I will add a note to see if how Cerys does Flight can help there.
I have it far up on my list, but would like to get our set working first.
If you meant this in regard to our first likely opponents... then I believe the current version should be strong enough; if not, we can just go over the area with Alpha and Omega, that should do the trick.
