In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

Changing my vote to

[X] Attack in Attack Stance
-[X] If he hits us, spend a Void Point on reducing wound penalties

With an effective TN of 35 against his 8k4, and our 5k3 against his TN of 15, I'm willing to risk this. He can't change stances until his own turn, so we know what his TN is.

We may not even need to spend that Void Point, considering that our next strike will likely knock him down to Hurt, at which point he'll have another -5 to his rolls.
Okay. So... again, if I'm understanding the math right... if we go into attack stance, and he stays Full Attack, then we're rolling 4k3 against 15, and he's rolling 8k4 against 35. I'm pretty sure we have the advantage there. Based on my rule-of-thumb rough estimates, if those are the correct numbers, he actually misses us a little bit more than half the time, while we hit him a fair chunk more than half.
It's actually 5k3, but yes.

That's if he goes full retard full attack.

It might be the Matsu bread and butter but it also just got him wounded pretty badly. He's not dumb I don't think anyways.

Technically speaking you change stances at the start of the new round. It's just for ease of play most gm's tend to have you do it on your turn.

If he changes stances to Attack, then his new Attack Roll will be 6k3 against our effective TN of 35 (15 from Reflexes + 5 from Armor + 5 from Ginwai's Armor Penalty + 5 from Way of the Scorpion + 5 from Ginwai's Wound Penalty). Unless he rolls really well I doubt he'll beat that, and we're likely to increase that Wound Penalty to 10 before he even swings.

The rulebook also says that characters can choose to maintain or change their Stance at the beginning of their Turn, not Round. This is on page 84.

I have no idea about dice rolls and Maugan has already explained that he didin't use a void point, however to clarify this for my own sake,
What I'm trying to figure out is why he did so?

I mean, there's fights after us, is the thing.
As I recall the first round was against graduates of the dojo to confirm that we're worthy. I took this to mean that the graduates who won would not be progressing further into the tournament, did it actually mean that the brackets where altered to make this happen?

[X] Attack in Attack Stance

Edit:
Gah, overlooked Maugan Ra's comment. Still want to save a void point to prevent him from blitzing us the third round, though.

What about picking dice that would wound him more instead of the least ones for the sake of keeping him alive? He should be able to take one of these, at least to a degree, and wound penalties are good when it's our opponent who suffers them. :p

I thought that unless we specified otherwise he was going to assume we'd be trying to minimize the damage instead.
You can indeed choose to accept a lower dice result, and indeed in certain situations it is recommended. I am currently assuming that Naoto wishes to fight his opponent effectively but does not wish to kill him - thus, as wounds pile on I will start picking increasingly lower dice results in order to avoid fatal injury.

2.15 - Exploiting weaknesses
- Attack in the 'Attack' stance
- If injured, spend a void point to reduce wound penalties

Slowly, cautiously, the two of you prowl around each other in a tightening circle, seeking advantage in the shifting footwork as you search for an opening. As you do so, your opponent speaks, his lips barely moving.

"You disgraced me in front of my lord's own family, Scorpion. Did you imagine I would forget it?"

You frown slightly, but are well aware that he is likely to throw you off balance. It is a poor strategy, for it relies on being better at preying on psychological weaknesses than someone who trained under the Bayushi. Still, if your enemy opts to hand you a weapon, it would almost be rude to turn down the chance to wield it.

"You disgraced yourself, Lion. That confrontation was of your own making." You say quietly, pitching your voice so that none of the audience can hear. "But you apologized, and I accepted it. That could have been an end to it."

You pause for a moment to give your words the greatest impact. "Only an absolute fool and incompetent would seek to compound the error by trying again before the eyes of the entire court. Your ancestors must be ashamed of you."

Ginwei's eyes bulge in momentary shock, before his face becomes a mask of rage. Roaring, he raises his katana above his head and hurls himself forwards, seeking to bring the blade crashing down on your exposed skull. You can see it in an instant - Matsu Ginwei is not intending to stop at a mere scratch. He is aiming to kill you, indeed he likely has been since he stepped onto this field. If you allow the strike to land, it will cut you in half from nose to groin.

You have no intention in allowing that to happen, and fortunately have a perfectly viable way to prevent it. In lifting his arms so high, Ginwei has caused the thin metal plates of his armour to stretch and pull apart, exposing a narrow strip of his gut to the air. You seize the opportunity presented with a rapid horizontal cut that slices straight through the flimsy protection available and sends a waterfall of blood cascading down your foe's legs.

Naoto's attack roll 5k3 = 18
Naoto's damage roll 5k2 = 17 -5 reduction = 12. Your enemy is in the 'Crippled' wound rank.

To his credit, Matsu Ginwei still attempts to attack, bringing his sword crashing down as he all but falls on top of you due to the strength leaving his lower limbs. You were prepared for this, however, and step aside at just the right moment to avoid the desperate lunge, moving clear as your opponent all but collapses.

Ginwei's attack roll (full attack with void point) 9k5 = 48 (versus TN 50)

Carefully you step away from your opponent, who can barely stand much less pursue you. With that margin of safety established, you turn your head to look at the audience for the first time, properly appreciating just how many eyes are upon you.

Most of them are Lions, as is to be expected, and while the ones who are looking at you generally manage to maintain their On, the one who are looking at your opponent seem to be disapproving. You suspect they saw how he gave into his emotions and exposed a vulnerability, and have little actual sympathy for his resulting injury.

The rest of the delegates are more interesting - aside from those who are competing directly, they all appear to be present. Doji Moriko looks pensive, as though weighing up the possible implications of this event, a look shared by the Dragon and by Asako Tani. The Unicorn and Crab delegates seem approving, though the look from the Yasuki leading the Crab makes you feel uncomfortably like a commodity that might have just increased in value.

Towering above them all, however, both literally from her viewing platform and in sheer force of presence, is Matsu Ketsui. The Daimyo's face is an expressionless mask, but her eyes blaze with angry contempt as they fix upon the staggering form of Matsu Ginwei (who does not appear to have noticed). Her gaze shifts to you, and you almost stagger beneath the force of it, noting that she seems to be almost anticipating something.

The bout is effectively yours, though technically you have not yet won through 'third blood'. The eyes of the court are upon you. How do you wish to conclude the duel?

Sweet sweet victory. So we saw the reactions from the rest of the delegates...but did Bayushi-sempai notice us?

[X] Make a nick on his face then bow politely.

Guys the trick is to make sure our action which hideously shames our opponent doesn't come off as a dick move.

Damn it feels good to be a Scorpion.

We basically have three options as I see it

[] FINISH HIM IN MORTAL KOMBAT
He's pretty much guaranteed to make our life a living hell no matter what we do. We could stop that right now whether by taking a limb (Leg) or just straight up killing him regardless, the intent is to finish him and his career as a bushi forever. This is a cruel, heartless thing to do. It' also in the immediate sense the most pragmatic, but will likely piss off our erstwhile ally in the Ikoma, definitely piss off the Matsu. However it may endear Doji Mariko closer to us.

[] I DAN HIBIKI WILL CHERRY TAP YOU!
He's lost, and while no doubt we'll end up duelling or killing him later, now is not the time to do so. So we give him a light cut, probably around the neck to indicate we could have killed him but chose not to. This shows that we're not bad sports, and satisfies the conditions to win. This is the safe options no real major gains safe from Tani-chan but no losses either (nick on the face also works)

[] GO HOME AND BE A FAMILY MAN
We concede, everyone knows we've won, everyone knows that we humiliated our foe. That doesn't mean we can't concede, sure it's dishonourable but we're Scorpion, it has more than a few knock on effects but perhaps the most effective is the massive insult it offers to Ginewei and showing we value peace over victory

That's what I see anyways.
