In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

Guys, we still need to come up with an idea as to how we can make our apology to Hiraki.

@Sirrocco, @primemountain, you're usually the main idea-guys, does anything come to mind for you?

IIRC we were somewhat upset/insecure about the whole "everyone in the place is armed" thing, and we made a comment about the food, which then due to a low roll got misinterpreted (or maybe it would've been misinterpreted anyway, but the low roll meant we couldn't make the social save), thus causing offense.

Maybe we should be honest about it, more or less? The sight of so many armed heimin unnerved and worried us, which resulted in the slip of tongue, or that particular choice of words? Maybe indicate that we were thinking of our home where something such a thing normally didn't happen, which influenced what we said?

Like I said; I'm not really sure how to best go about a Rokugani apology in this manner...

So... things as they were...
- The heimen were all armed. That made us feel a *bit* uncomfortable. More to the point, it suggested that they might have been involved with the group that took a shot at Otomo-sama. It also meant that they were... not in keeping with the way the Lion like to keep their heimen, while being significantly more aligned with the way that the Crab keep their heimen. It was also, apparently, a *massive* violation of Imperial law. We knew that they were listening, and so felt that trying to express how crab food compared favorably with Lion food would be a good way to flatter the Crab, and stay on the good side of the heimen (who vastly outnumbered us) - especially when we already knew that the Crab didn't particularly like the Lion food.
- Kaiu-san, however, heard us as trying to build up our relationship with him while tearing down the Lion. He found the style of the attempt objectionable while also disapproving of our complaints about the Lion food, and what it might imply about our relationship with privation (if we are so well-off that we can afford to have spices as a matter of course - unlike the Crab, who spend their resources on the Wall).

Other things about Kaiu-san...
- Sat in the middle during the festival
- Had never thought that he would miss wall food, until he was away from it for all that long.
- Has prodigious stamina when it comes to being able to drink and not fall over
- Can be expected to be at least as intelligent as we are
- He openly challenged us as to whether or not we had a problem after clearly seeing both the heavily armed nature of the locals, and our own discomfort. On rereading... that's an interesting effect... especially since the room had calmed and quieted once the proprietor welcomed him as Crab. There's a good chance that he was offended by our reaction to them as well as by our response about the food, and the fact that the connection we were trying to build wasn't really there.

So... overall, what might he think of us?
- More a courtier than a warrior, without the attitudes that a warrior might have
- Has not known deprivation
* Seeks connection for political reasons, rather than from any true commonalities or sense of camraderie.
- Does not trust Crab heimen even in the presence of a Crab that vouches for him - disrespectful to the ashigaru that put their lives on the line beside their masters
- Disrespectful of the sacrifices in resources that the Crab and others like them make.

How do we counter that/apologize for it?
- Attempting to convince him that he was largely wrong will likely go over badly, for a few reasons - not least of which because we'd be using court skills to do it, and using court skills in an attempt to costlessly gain social advantage is one of the things we know that he's pissed about.
- The fact is, we *have* known deprivation - it's just that in Scorpion lands, spices are cheap enough and easy enough to get that even the heimen eat them regularly - likely the use of vegetables to stretch things helps a lot there in terms of cost. Unfortunately, that was only the surface truth that upset him, rather than the deeper issue. If we are going to actually get anywhere, we need to dig at the deeper stuff.
- Expressing a change of heart might work, if we could sell it right. The only real experience to leverage there would be the combo of our trip in the snow, the attack by the faceless, Bayushi Kimoko's death, our being temporarily suspected of it, our being exonerated, Matsu Ketsui's speech, and our now being the head of the delegation. There's a lot of beef there, but I'm not sure how any of it could be turned to our needs.
- A well-built apology might work, as long as we don't make it sound like we want something out of him, but merely to apologize. This is complicated by the fact that we *are* doing this for tactical/political reasons, at least to some extent. Would be helped significantly if we could come up with a reason for our apology that would resonate.

"Kaiu-san, you are due an apology, and I write this letter to offer you one. I was disrespectful to you, to Lion cuisine, and to our dining companions. I had not intended to be so, but in retrospect it is clear that I was, and I apologize. I find myself recently taught in the lesson of the Crab - of how an evil and implacable foe leads one to appreciate all that might help one stand against it. It has... adjusted my perspective in some matters. I have some further thoughts on that subject that I would wish to discuss, if you are still willing to share conversation. Respectfully, Soshi Naoto"

If he agrees to the discussion, we hand him the quick "They're not affected by Jade, they are affected by the Ward, we suspect they'd be affected by crystal, they can apparently grow claws, take significant amounts of damage before going down, and have no faces" bit, or some variation on it. Getting the tactical info to the Crab would be a Good Thing. Also, they're Crab. They're not going to panic about this in the way that some of the other Clans might have. I'd worry about handing the Yasuki overly-useful trade information, but all of their crystal is for internal consumption *anyway*. Maybe convince them to keep relatively quiet about it, but it'd be good to get this to the Kuni, at least, sooner rather than later.

In more local application, we present it in straightforward, practical terms - not disrespecting him or wasting his time, while hopefully racking up at least some "war against evil" credit. It also gives us something that we *actually* have in common, which might or might not be worth something later on.

Now, this is something of a gambit. I believe that this information needs to be given to the Crab - Duty/Loyalty to Rokugan, among other things, but there are reasons that others might disagree. I'm also just handing it to them outright for uncertain gain in goodwill (especially since I wouldn't plan on revealing sources), rather than trying to gain value out of it. As an example, we could pretty easily hand him a few bits of the info on them, and use that to leverage him into officially introducing us to Yasuki-san, at which point we tell her the rest. He'd likely be a bit annoyed at the power play, but he'd do it. This plan only gets us that intro if he decides that he wants to give us that intro (or if he tells her, and tells her where he got it from, and she decides that she wishes to know more for herself). Still, I think it's decent, given the situation and the available information.

I do not think we should be trying to push that further. Just apologize. Not try and make further contact with the Crab through that guy. That just seems to court disaster.

Trouble is, I am not sure I follow the panicked train of thought. And apologies ala Rokugani are difficult to parse. Do I remember right that any letter we write and send by heimin, any can read in between here and the Crab? If so, it would be best not to mention insulting the Matsu food.

Also, groveling as head of delegation? Not much into it.

Maybe something like this?

Remind him the only reason we were there was as a gift from us to him, apologise while offering excuse but not explicitly calling on it, giving him an out. As in that was not the Real Soshi Naoto, he was preocupied with the whole plot that ended up killing his boss. Remind him that we are both fighting in our ways, but his people can brag holding back the wall, we die in secret and everyone hates us for being vilans. And end by reminding him of our recent succes, even if it came at a high price.

@Maugan Ra :Not sure about the signature. Do we now end letters with our title whever we right them?

@Sirrocco: Any thoughts?

Overall, I like @Sirrocco 's letters, but @primemountain makes some good points about our letter likely being read by outsiders, and our new position as the head of the Scorpion delegation.

Maybe instead of "Lion's cuisine" simply say "host's cuisine"? The recipient would know what we mean, but anyone else wouldn't necessarily.

Think you might be reading to deep into his reaction @Sirrocco on the other hand this is Rokugan

Also I think basically saying we were trying to help you makes it sound like we are trying to put him in the wrong @primemountain.

Both of you bring up good points however we are dealing with a Crab bushi my gut reaction is to just be honest is if perhaps a bit vague and tell him that we are both sorry and why no word games as little hidden meaning as possible show him that while we are a sneaky scorpion we can be blunt and to the point when we need to be.

I do not see how us apologizing puts him in the wrong. Saying that we were there to help only means we had good intentions, we still botched the delivery. And putting stuff about the Nothing into an open letter in the court(not hand delivered by messinger samurai) is not something I like doing. Even in alusions.

The I wished to aid you could be taken as you should have been grateful. Also I don't want to mention the nothing in the letter I just want it to be a simple apology.

Thinking about the "disrespect to Lion cuisine"... it's true that we acknowledge that we were disrespectful, but it is in the context of acknowledging our (unintentional, bu real) fault and apologizing. It doesn't seem to me that the impact of that would be all that terrible. That's especially the case because people could read the letter, but acknowledging that you have intercepted and read someone else's mail is itself dishonorable. Still, I could be wrong. @Maugan Ra, could we have an etiquette check on that one?

I am of the opinion and impression that apologies in Rokugan that you actually mean (as opposed to the ones that you give because you are required to) are supposed to be deep and heart-felt. It was a lack of authenticity that got us in this mess. Seems to me that presenting anything that might look like "I apologized. Now you're not allowed to be mad" could easily backfire. Again, though, that's gut reaction. @Maugan Ra, could we have an etiquette check on this as well? (or perhaps the same etiquette check?)

On further look... I admit the "willing to tolerate" was kind of excessive. I've toned that one down a bit. With that adjustment, I don't think it still qualifies as groveling. I do think that being willing to openly acknowledge fault, rather than the weasel-words "any insult I may have offered" is kind of important here. Your version is very close to an apology-without-apology, and I think that will go over badly. We're not maneuvering for position here. We are trying to take someone who feels offended and convince them not to be offended. Courtly tricks will not avail us.

As you move into the month of the Rat, the court at Shiro Matsu slowly settles into something resembling a routine. Each day the morning is consumed with the court proper, held in the main halls of the castle and featuring all manner of interesting debates and artistic exhibitions for you and your fellow guests to enjoy. The Lion are a supremely militant Clan, it is true, but even so they remain samurai and thus pay a considerable degree of respect to works of intellect and philosophy.

As one of the favoured guests of your hosts you find yourself in a surprisingly strong position within the courts. The Lion seem almost ashamed of their inability to prevent your lord falling to assassins in the middle of their own stronghold, so while you do not entirely escape the stigma attached to your Scorpion heritage the Matsu are still considerably more respectful of your words and deeds than they otherwise might have been, giving you an additional degree of leeway that is simply not afforded to anyone else.

The other guests are far from blind to this development, and as court continues many of them find themselves deferring instinctively to your judgement, or at the very least restraining themselves from criticizing you too harshly. It is not a situation that will persist indefinitely, both your training and your instincts are clear on that, but while it persists you have the opportunity to take full advantage in a way that you otherwise might not.

Article:
Which topics do you wish to see discussed at Winter Court? You may pick up to five, one for each day of court before the next major event, the Festival of the Moon's Wrath. These will then be used to construct future updates. Note that picking less than five is perfectly allowable, and will result in one of the other Clans seizing the initiative on a given day.

What do you want to see discussed?

Then, once court has been concluded for the day, all the samurai involved split off and go about finding their own means to pass the time. The afternoons are consumed with private meetings, with idle pastimes and individual pursuits in the castle and adjacent town. It is in such contexts that the real work of a courtier is done, often building on the groundwork that has been laid during the morning or many days beforehand.

Your letter to Kaiu Hiraki seems to go over well enough, as a reply comes back barely a day later that not only accepts your apology but invites you to meet with the Crab delegation on the fifth day of the Rat for further discussions on the matter, an invitation which you make a point of accepting promptly. Still, that leaves you with five other days to fill with pastimes of your own devising, and only the vaguest form of guidance from your superior and sensei's on what to do with them.

Article:
You have four other days remaining - the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th days of the Rat. Each day can be spent interacting with a single NPC of your choosing, or in arranging a particular activity such as a tea ceremony or country ride to which you can invite multiple potential guests. Please vote on how you wish to arrange your upcoming schedule.

I would like to apologize for how brief this one is, but I got a degree of writer's block when it came to picking topics of discussion or after-court activities, and have thus decided to simply hand such decisions off to you lot instead.

This is both a chance to pursue your agenda, and to let me know if there's anything in general you're interesting in seeing/doing for purely story or character based reasons.

topics for debate....

* how, for peace to endure, it is necessary a greater understanding of each other and how it could be arranged.
*the pros of Commerce as a way to better integrate the clans
*the merits of each school and how they symbolize the way of their respective clans.
*differences on Bushido interpretation, with an undertone of acceptance of the differences, as the base is the same

people we would want to talk to:

- Otomo (maybe a game of go or two)
- the son of our host
- the Phoenix (let's go to the theater)
- the Dragon representative or the lion second in command
@Maugan Ra dido you mention what were the prizes from the archery competition by any chance?

this would be a great opportunity to know what every clan were willing to lose.

I can think on two reasons

1 - theyes didn't want everyone to know that the wagers were better than what they got/ their own wager was pitifull or a registered

2- to stop some kind of embarrassment from someone that didn't gave any present.

Okay, for the Crab meeting, we'll obviously want to talk with them about what we know in regards to the new enemy that showed itself, possibly give them what information we have, and discuss matters of commerce, such as reduced tariffs and specific trades (the Crab are always hungry for food, IIRC). We might also look at exchanging some school-slots at this point. The Crab might be interested in a slot at the Soshi Shugenja school (learning about illusions should also translate into learning about how to defend against them, which might be rather important with the new enemy), for example, while we could probably always use a Yasuki Courtier or two.

For the rest of the court... not sure.

We'll probably want to talk with Tani some more; maybe see about turning into a sort of general scholarly discourse we could draw some of the representatives from the other delegations in.

Beyond that, not sure. We'll probably want to leave 1-2 "slots" unclaimed, in order to see what the rest of the delegations might do with them, which might give us an idea about their goals.

Scheduling some facetime with Daidoji Chen, current status "Punching his way through the Shiro Matsu underworld" probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Control of what is going to be discussed could be fairly huge if we play it right. It's a potentially excellent way to curry favor with one group or another.

Thoughts: Right now the Crane are represented by a lone figure in our Daidoji ally. More, Chen has been trained a bodyguard, so might have areas of weakness when it comes to more political matters - though less so than if he were any other Clan than Crane. If we pick topics that are of import to the Crane, then arrange to defend him in them, we could find ourselves even further in the Crane's good books, which could put us in an excellent negotiating position.

More than that, our Lore check from the beginning indicates that the Mantis and Crane are on very good terms currently, and that the Mantis currently have a great deal of resources - resources our Clan needs. I think at least one of our days should be about something that both Mantis and Crane care about. On the other hand, their coastal trade routes are rivals to our land trade routes, so we don't want to discuss the obvious. Instead, we should...

[X] Discuss silk - the best sources, the best weaves, and so on; then come firmly down on the Crane/Mantis side of things.

Hopefully we can then leverage that to maybe have Chen introduce us to any friends of his among the Mantis.

This could put us into conflict with the Phoenix - they have some silk production as well IIRC - but they're coastal as well, so odds aren't bad of them siding with the Mantis either, because they need trade as badly as we do. The most likely people to be in opposition to the Mantis would likely be the Unicorn, so we should probably think of something to appease them later on (as we have a 'everyone be friends with us' stance at the moment.)

Similarly, we should come up with conversation topics of interest to the Dragon and Unicorn, come down on their side for those discussions, and then use those as convenient excuses to 'talk about the matter with them in more depth' / come up with a diplomatic pretext for conversation and negotiation.

For the Dragons, I recommend discussing

[X] Philosophy

As some of the other topics that Dragons are interested in might put us into conflict with the Crab, and that'll likely help us get back into the Phoenix's good books. Plus, it's nice and neutral. Similarly, while Horses or Gaijin goods would be obvious targets for discussion with the Unicorn, I instead suggest

[X] Medicine

As our Lore check told us that the Unicorn lands were struck by plague during the Clan wars.

Finally, we should probably finish with something like

[X] Bushido

To stay on the Lion's good side, since we're probably going to step on their toes at least once during the week.

EDIT: That leaves us with one slot still free - something of benefit to the Crab might not be a bad idea. Discussing the Shadowlands directly is taboo, though... in any case I'm open to suggestions.
