Unless we don't need to bond to lands to get mana, and we have some sort of inherent connection to it. Mages in MTG lore never really hard to bond to anything to get power, and even if their explosions were small scale they were able to pump them out decently quick. It's possible that Mana is meant to be like an emergency thing and we won't be able to use it in witch fights often, but it's just as possible that it's the other way around. We really can't tell until we learn about how it works in story.

Either way, Red-Mana-Explosions + Explosion-Wish-Explosions > Red-Mana-Explosions-alone, so we should definitely wish for that anyways.

Question. I don't know if anyone already asked it, but...

Magical Potential is basically the potential to influence/change the world, translated into raw, magical power. Unless, of course, I fucked up and it's all Fanon that won't be implemented here.

Assuming it isn't, however, a fuck-up...

A MTG Mage would, according to this theory, have a much greated potential than practically any normal girl that doesn't have Bullshit Protagonist Shenanigans buffing her (Madoka).

Now, about Planeswalkers.

We are not one right now, but one of the most important characteristics of a Planeswalker is that they have virtually unlimited room for growth, and their capability to influence the world/universe/multiverse increases with their power, experience and age.

So, if Magical Potential is the potential to influence the world at this time and in the future, except translated into raw magic...

...what is the Magical Potential of a person/being that is ageless(potential to change things isn't limited by time/age/lifetime), will grow in power practically infinitely (potential to change things increases exponentially with time) and can travel to an infinite number of different worlds (potential to change things in many universes, rather than just one)?

"Yes."

More seriously, you wouldn't need to become a magical girl to influence the world heavily that way. If you're immortal, that automatically gives you infinite time to gather money. Similarly, you can wait for technological advances and shape parallel dimensions that way. Probably. Maybe. You'd just have to see it, I suppose.

I should point out that Puella Magi are also immortal.

...for clarity, immortal =/= unkillable.

Red also has a general theme of being powerful but squishy. I mean, we can go full glass cannon if we want? I'm not sure it's the safest idea but we'd probably be able to do some pretty heavy things.

huh.

yeah, thinking about it, the more Mtg magic we learn before contracting, the higher our metaphysical 'weight' would be. therefore, the longer we go without grabbing PM powers, the stronger they'd be/the bigger a wish we could get without auto-witching.

As to what happens when a Planeswalker does this? What other people have already said. QMs choice of how to handle it, since that seems like something way in the future, and we'd never actually need to contract at that point anyway, so it'd probably be more of a thought experiment at that point.

I imagine for a planeswalker it'd be a bit like becoming a lich or using Form of the Dragon or something. Contracting radically alters your body, and while it may make you a little more vulnerable you have enough magic at that point to exploit it by messing around with the gem. (Transmute it into a darksteel colossus, why not?)

But we're probably going to be pretty low key on both Mana and Magical girl stuff. Would be more interesting to me to see what casting haste or some other combat buff on a soul gem does. Can we super charge the link? Be like Sayaka in that one episode where she basically puppeted herself to win a fight despite being punched full of holes?

But then you're a dragon who dies when a gemstone is hit. Like some sort of reverse Smaug.
All other MGs have that issue and they do alright... ish. We wouldn't even know to wish for anything to protect it anyway, and we might be better off if we can have it lodged in our breastbone or something instead of hanging around like an accessory so many have.

Honestly, now that I'm thinking about it, the "Be the Dragon" wish might be very useful and IC.

When you transform, the soul gem gets turned into random jewelery, right?

If we're a dragon it would probably find a fitting place. Dunno how much control you're supposed to have over what it turns into, but it can't be that much worse than wearing your soul on a hairpin.

It'd probably either be the center of our collarbone or the center of our brow.

And I would totally vote for the "be a dragon" wish.

[x] Go downstairs and eat breakfast. Some of the other kids should be waking up right about now, but you still need to eat.

-[x] Don't give specific details, but write that you are in same city, QB approached you, but you did not make a wish before doing research on MGs.

Your hand unconsciously seeks out the pendant around your neck as you consider the perks of just grabbing some food and leaving.

With its comforting form in your grip, it takes only a few moments to reach a decision. You can't let the thoughts of other people rule your life. If you're paralyzed by worries about what could go wrong, you'll remain like that forever: paralyzed. That being said, contacting Jeanne is pretty important. So why don't you do it
while eating?

Course set, you let go of your pendant, grab your laptop, and head downstairs before your burst of confidence can fade.

Your minor act of not-quite-rebellion is well and throughly crushed by a new inclusion to the dining room. Hung on one wall of the room is a sign that you don't remember seeing before:

"No electronics at the table."

Below it is a picture of a cell phone marked off by an X.

...That's not really what you had expected to force you back upstairs, but it wouldn't be a very good idea to ignore the new rule. They'd probably confiscate your laptop. Before you hurry away, you load up a plate with some sausages, eggs, and toast.

You're able to retreat back to the safety of your room before any other kids show up. You can always try again later.

Once your laptop has booted up and you've shoveled down a few mouthfuls of food, you set up a temporary account under the name of "Wishmaker" and start trying to write a message to Jeanne. You have to discard almost a dozen versions before you find something you're at least semi-happy with.

Hello! Kyubey approached me yesterday and offered to turn me into a magical girl. I live in the same city as you. Would you mind if I do end up becoming one?

Also, does the city even need another magical girl, or would I just get in the way? I tried to look at the news, but it's hard to distinguish between a witch attack and an "ordinary" death from unnatural causes.

I haven't made a wish yet and made sure to do some research on the subject first.

It doesn't even take five minutes for you to receive the quiet ding signifying a new message. You click on the link and wait impatiently for it to load.

...Okay, that's weird.

You receive another three messages in rapid succession, but they all give out the same error when you try to read them.

You're just about to give up when one finally loads.

Why would I mind? Witches don't care who tries to exterminate them, so why should I? Having more magical girls around means less work for each one of us. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, but we should probably meet in person for that. I don't spend much time on the Internet.

The situation in the city is kinda awful. With just three of us to split the workload, witches keep falling through the cracks. We aren't as bad off as some other cities, but a few dozen people still die to witches every month. We're too heavily outnumbered.

There's a nice little cafe near where I live: Azure Lily. Would you be able to meet with me there in about an hour?

A quick search reveals that the cafe she mentioned is about two miles away. A bit far to walk, but you're in pretty good shape; you could get there just before the deadline, or even sooner if you decide to take a bus.

"I do not recommend going out to meet with Jeanne Lorelle. You will be much safer if you remain here."

You almost fall out of your seat as Kyubey jumps on your keyboard and curls up directly on it. You're starting to understand why some people think he has a cat somewhere in his ancestry.

"Jeanne Lorelle is the most famous magical girl in the city. People will take pictures and remember you if you choose to meet with her. Speculation will run rampant. Right now, I am the only one who knows about your potential. Should you settle on this course of action, that will change, and your chances of being attacked by a witch will increase significantly as a result."

[] Accept Jeanne's invitation and head over there now. There's no reason to procrastinate.
-[] Thank Kyubey for his concern anyway.

[] Decline.
-[] Try to keep messaging her.
--[] What do you ask about? (Write-in)
-[] Explain that Kyubey just told you not to meet with her.

if this wish turns us into a witch (and we don't get notice beforehand from QM), I'll cry.

if we can still play as said witch afterward, I'll shout "awesome!" and we'll be able to continue the tradition of insanely OP and off the wall character concepts.

EDIT:

Oh, hey, and update.

Witching out due to wishing to be a dragon likely turns you into the "Witch of Dragons, her Nature is to be Awesome".

There are worse fates in this world.

Kyubey not wanting us to talk to other magical girls? Insisting that we should stay "safe" and isolated? Tipping your hand there, kyubes.

(Also what's with the font this update?)

[X] Accept Jeanne's invitation and head over there now. There's no reason to procrastinate.

Jeanna is also probably trying to trick us, but I don't think we'll get killed in the initial meeting. And staying here and cutting ourselves off from people is really risky too.

Read as "if you don't do what I say, your chances of getting witched out by me go up."

Kind of want to explain what QB said, mostly as a "Poke it With a Stick" approach to seeing their relationship. Good old Blue info gathering with Red recklessness in the approach, am I right?
