[HALP] me! (WORM quest)

i'm pretty sure i followed this in the hopes of its revival because the premise sounds cool and your writing is solid. So I'd join 😃

I was kind of wondering how much this is based on canon and how much is fanon? Going by the wiki, I'm not really sure how much is incompetence on their part and how much is because Wildbow didn't bother. I kind of did some research into Worm, because I used to write Omakes for a few Worm Quests- and boy, I am shocked by some things.

Like how the NY Wards are extremely underdeveloped- supposedly there's so many of them there's 5 whole squads, yet the wiki only lists three & only two have a page. Similarly, The Butcher is just... multiple past Butchers don't even have their powers listed, overall The Butcher is weirdly more boring than I expected? For the most part, The Butcher is just an Evil Psychopath who is primarily a Brute with a few fancy abilities. You would think having Heroes and Non-Teeth in the Butcher Collective would have meant something, but The Butcher is just unquestionably evil.

There's also the fact Bonesaw & Burnscar are (much more heavily) negatively affected by their Shards, but I've seen so many stories treat them the same as the other S9 who are kind of crazy more-or-less on their own. One of my biggest regrets is that I'll never get to write that omake where Bonesaw has an epiphany (partially because her Shard got a Data Packet and partially because she's forced to acknowledge how her parents would be ashamed of her), I even have artwork for her post Heel-Face-Turn...

Really, there's a lot about Worm that kind of just leaves me confused. For example, apparently Browbeat and his Shard get along so well, the Conflict Drive is either inactivate or ignored when it comes to him. Like his forgettableness is kind of such a meme, despite how amazing his power-set logically should be plus the whole Unusual Host/Shard Partnership.

Then there's the Cauldron Vials, I'm kind of convinced they're more Artificial Buds- those ratios shouldn't make sense if they're a direct connection with a single Shard. Granted, Wildbow both kind of implied The Butcher was originally a Cauldron Cape, but also would have existed regardless so...

Right, then there's Ward, which I never really got around to investigating cause it was barely relevant. From a timeline perspective, Kenzie shouldn't make sense- she's somehow only 11 at the start of Ward, 8 at the start of Worm, 9(?) following the 2-3 year timeskip, and was born 2002 despite Ward in-universe happening 2015. Someone did something wrong, and I doubt it was me.

Overall, I'm just really curious how you'll decide to handle some of this stuff. I was kind of sold by Cat Girl Amy who has probably replaced herself with a clone multiple times, so I'm kind of curious how that progresses further.
 
I'm totally down to come back to this. And also down to do Taylor/shard talks. It's been so long, Wards come out, so many other ideas have been explored in the parahumans fanfic community, it'd be cool.

I'll say I do regret the time shenanigans, I've since moved away from that… taking time travel into account can be such a hassle.

On the other hand, terribly excited to see the ill advised adventures of Amelia and Lilac continue, and of course Penny. That was a highlight.
 
It has been so long, and re-reading would take a long time- did this involve bodyjacking Night, or was that something else? I recall something where Night got her body taken over by the MC that's a Shard, with the logic she's basically a non-person? Right, somewhat unrelated, how is Rune/Tammi being handled? Cause I've seen some QMs insist she's Purest Evil, despite canonically having a sincere heel-face-turn and having only aligned with the E88 because Worm is a hellhole and being a Teenager thought they were a Necessary Evil cause far as she could tell nobody else was really doing anything useful.

    • Going I've the replies so far, it looks like we have a quorum. After work today I'll thread mark this post.

    First step is to re-read everything myself... Again. I'd encourage those who haven't read the whole thing in a while to go over it again themselves so we don't miss anything.

    Second step is noting the trend that replies have noticed that I'm not Ward compliant. There's a lot to unpack there, but the cliffs notes is that I don't find Ward compelling in any way.

    The only thing that might make sense to me is Titans... But they are end-stage kind of thing. And this is under the assumption that our MC doesn't stop that from happening (hopefully that happens).

    The Firmament could be a thing if people really, really want it to be, but I would have to pull a serious retcon to include it. Might be simpler to consider this Quest as a bit more of an AU?

    For the Third step... It might make sense to ignore the last vote and re-hold it.

    With that in mind, let's hold a mini-vote:

Ask Taylor, politely, to not do anything rash, because she may die if something goes wrong. Explain in detail how powers function and that some of them are something between sentient and sapient. Make sure she knows that we are not supposed to be communicating with her like this and it would be best for her not to talk about it. Mention that our main specialties are Multitasking and Administration, but we can work with more or less most possible options.
    -[X] Mention that she already 'half-triggered'. She has access to pretty much perfect photographic memory and the ability to learn new things at an abnormal rate. We recommend that she uses this ability to gain information and start figuring out what needs to be done to fix BB.
    [X] Suggest that she needs talk to her Father about her problems and issues, and that he could do a lot to help her (if nothing else, he could pull her out of school and have her homeschool/online school) but that he has no way of knowing she needs help if she doesn't ask for it.

    -[X] After the initial meeting with Taylor (if you do), get her up to speed on the current parahuman politics of Brockton Bay and a primer on the various groups so she knows what pitfalls to avoid and who's relatively trustworthy (not many).
    -[X] Tell her what's going on with Lilac and Claire, and how we're intervening in that scenario to try and stabilize it. We're kind of hoping she'll join them and make hero or rogue team. That we would prefer that she give us lots of nice data, but that she also be safe and happy while doing so.

    --[X] Contact Gaea and ask her to stop Claire from making fully functioning clones via putting restrictions of some sort on her power
    --[X] Explain to her how shards that enable powers to produce organisms endlessly usually get slapped down by Zion which is why nobody does that.

Amy will create her perfect clone, but they will share senses and Amy will be limited on the number of Clones she can command at any given time. Ask Gaea how many clones she believes she can control at the same time, but propose starting with a maximum of 3.

    I personally don't really care about Ward compliencny, never been one to care how perfectly accurate fanfiction matches the original work's Canon. With a setting lik Worm where the fanfic community is literally its own setting into itself... Yeah, being accurate to the less popular sequel seems pointless to me.
     
    I also care very little for ward. well, some bits and bobs were good, but in general it was disappointing, both as a story and what it did with the worldbuilding, so i personally would see "not ward compliant" as a bonus.

    Oh no, major apologies- I wasn't complaining about Ward compliancy. From what I understand, it isn't even compliant with the original story. Seriously, Amy was "totally always evil" and Wildbow just "failed to show it"? This dude literally retconned two characters into dying just to make people shut up about what said characters are doing. I really don't trust this dude in the slightest.

    For the most part, I would just ignore Ward- it is completely dependent on things ending up like Worm Canon, so there's realistically not a lot you even could do with it. Sure, there's the other realities, but they're really not relevant unless someone manages to either break the dimensional barriers or effectively be Professor Haywire 2.0

    That said, the fundamental concept of Titans could work regardless- honestly, it probably isn't hard to say Cauldron's reckless Vial experiments, might produce some. Look at Noelle, from what I've seen most people are convinced Echidna is a corruption caused by her Shard (an artificial Bud slapped together by clueless humans mucking about with what is basically a god's corpse, and was further damaged being split between multiple drinkers).

    I don't get why anyone would be concerned by the biokinetic creating lesbian cat girls from her own DNA, that's probably far less horrifying than the actual army of homicidal nanomachines, the (literal?) edgelord that is somehow the leader of an unstoppable Serial Killer group, the Illuminati who shamelessly accept being vilified as demons for their blatant crimes which they have no intention of stopping, there's also the country spanning organization of actual tyrannical slavers, oh there's also at least three eldritch abominations that desire nothing else than the slow yet inevitable death of everything.

    Hey, is it possible for us to hijack The Morrigan? The High Priest and Queen Administrator pretty much have the same role, plus I really don't get why the real High Priest is active if all Cauldron Vials are more Artificial Buds made from broken components crafted by beings who don't actually know what they're doing.

    I've just been super into The Morrigan once I learned about her. Also Unshackled Dragon, I actually have a piece of artwork regarding an instance of her becoming a Techno-organic organism post mutagen.
     
    I just read the last chapters to remind myself of this quest.

    These hosts don't have any common sense. One is planning suicide to get powers, the other is doing parthenogenesis to get out of talking to her mother a plan that will obviously not work btw.
