Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

I doubt that calculator accounts for 1s subtracting successes on non key skills so your skepticism is warranted there
In fairness, I'm mostly trying to demonstrate the degree of impact the difficulty increase could have on a sample roll. 1s and 10s should have similar impacts on similar numbers of dice rolled, so for rough comparisons like this they can probably be set aside without too much issue.

[X] Follow Harry's lead

Harry is a better physical investigator than Molly is, and mechanically he has the White Council wizard/Warden regional commander Background giving him extra authority/bonus dice to throw around when acting in an official capacity in the human magical society, when he chooses to use it.

For a mortal sorcerer this means if you fuck with him, or dont convince him you are on the up and up, he could have you declared a black magic user and your head cut off quite summarily. Plus, Dresden has a personal reputation. Bonus Intimidation dice.
Let him take lead on this.

Molly is HUMINT. She throws Exalted dice pools at getting people to talk to her, whether by Empathy or Intimidation. But she needs some info to work with. Best to allow Harry to draw out some preliminary information before deciding whether to pick a point of interest and press on it.

completely agree is anyone okay with asking harry what he thinks we could use our crown for after we get some focuses and he does said investigations? Cause we're not getting a full picture from this one guy there's a chance we'll get no picture. The crown do a lot though and I would like if molly asks harry what she should ask with what we've got an what focuses we have on hand before fully leaving is that okay?

That's Doylistically speaking, asking the GM for questions to ask possibly warped through Harry's Biases, or a Red herring. I'm willing to use the crown to ask whatever questions occur to us in a couple updates but ambivalent to the notion of discussing good questions to ask with Harry.

I mean yeah kinda harrys an investigator though and he'd have specific questions he might want to know. whats the point of allies if we're not going to rely on them?

Sure. Which is why I can go either way. If the GM feels like giving us question prompts through Harry I'm completely fine with that.

If we want to have an IC brainstorming session with Harry in the name of socialization/party cohesion I don't see how it can hurt us. I'm not hardcore into it but I'm not opposed to it either.

yeah thats fair same for me honestly just a large part of wanting allies won't be due to them being beatsticks it will be for their skills, it will be for their knowledge, resources, and you know general friendships nice. We are often going to be the big stick in most scenarios or we will be eventually workshopping and pooling talents and minions is what allies are for though and plugging up our short comings and blind spots.

It's probably better for us in the long run that Harry seems conservative about using Molly's powers this way.

We should definitely make use of the crown, but it's wasteful to be lazy about it. Better to get as much as we can through other means and to use the crown to get impossible or simply impractical to obtain information around that.

As an additional bonus, once we get going we can use that rationale as an excuse to hire Harry to investigate stuff for us, which is too funny not to do every once in a while at least.

at some point do you think we should have a list of questions to try and gather on mollys offtimes through various proxies? like our future demons and other focuses we can use to ping the crown for specific questions? Cause we have essence regen we may as well occasionally spend it on something? That or crafting and maybe other stuff if we ever get a nest or whatever we can do with ancient sorcery.

Get a few points in Investigation, and we could figure questions out ourselves.
We have Perception 2, Investigation 0.

Perception 3 is 8XP.
Investigation 2 is 5XP.
Investigation 3 is 9XP.
An Investigation Excellency is 4XP.
26XP.

Thats a significant amount of XP and time we arent spending on other things.
Or we could just bring Harry and Mouse along.
And invest in Allies. Or Familiar.

Exalted specialization is the key.
Dresden Files is not kind to specialists.
Even Creation was not especially kind to specialized Celestial Exalts.
Only the DBs had the numbers to afford to field specialized Exalts.

kinda weird your arguing that branching out too much is bad and saying specialization can't be afforded. I do kind of agree with you just seems weird. I do want to be actually supernaturally good in certain things we do and get a few things that far. For stuff like investigation I'd rather just have allies though seeing as holy fuck lets not try to do everything and actually have useful allies.

Building a Circle out of complementing Exalted rather than all master-of-none builds is much more efficient.

Unfortunatly I can't see into DP's notes to find out if we can eventually close companions with fitting specialities.
Just getting close enough to Dresden to make sure we work on the same cases most of the time would already be a vital step in the right direction for that though.

Specialized exalted stomp on generalized ones, to an insane degree. Which is why exalted that specialize in social and minion making, are the most powerful. As they become everything else by proxy.

I don't know. Seems to me that we can just keep applying demons to our problems until one of them resolves it or the whole mess gets dragged down to hell. :V

Edit:
Seriously though, there is a balance to be struck here. Being cripplingly overspecialized is bad, but a poorly built generalist is only good for punching down.

What we need are some core specialities that we can stomp on people in, and then some flexible skills around that which we can reliably use to make them play our game instead of theirs.

No, thats not what Im saying.
I am saying the level of investment necessary to be better than Dresden in his own specialty is probably unwise, compared to simply bringing him and Mouse along.

You can have your primary focus be a swordfighter, or firearms, or controlling a swarm of minions from afar, or sorcery, or crafting; it doesnt matter. You cant just neglect minimum investment into other fields or you will be caught mother naked by surprises; being the baddest crafter in the world wont help you if you take a bullet and didnt take any combat charms.

Dresden carries a pistol into combat along with his magic paraphernalia and melee weapons for a reason, after all.

We can match Dresden. Overmatch him, even. But you will not be as good at something as someone whose primary investment is in that area. Not without similar levels of investment or higher.
And that costs XP.

Going from Perception 2, Investigation 0 to (guessing at Dresdens Perception + Investigation dicepool here) Per 3 + Investigation 4/5 + various Background bonus dice will require us to, at the minimum, expend upwards of 30XP just to match his dice pool.

Now I have no objection to spending 9 XP for Investigation 2 and an Investigation Excellency, once we have other things done.
But 30XP+ is not a reasonable expense at this juncture.
Bring Dresden or spend XP on applicable Allies to do the heavylifting.

thats fair I do actually want to go far in on certain things do you agree with that? Like getting 5 dots in certain things, complimenting charms, and attributes, and excellencies? Like I'm not totally against branching out some are you fine with actually going really deep into some things though?
