Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

I dont really think it works that way.

The Red Court, the Blacks, the Fomor and more will happily track you down for predation if you are a known wizard who does not have the protection of the White Council or a similarly powerful faction; for Elaine, it was Summer that kept her alive as a sprog, and she's kept a low profile since.

The Council certainly keeps track of its members; Dresden himself hardly attended meetings even after being made a Warden, but he was still a Council member in good standing, who received ongoing updates, and was called on.

Just for an example, when they were electing a replacement for Simon Petrovich in Summer Knight, it took almost fifteen minutes to go through the full list of all the living senior wizards who were eligible for the role.
BEFORE they got to McCoy.

There were wizards on sabbatical, wizards with commitments("He got real married" and "pyramid sitting" were two) wizards with magical or health issues and the like. A bunch of them werent around.
Still Council members, still kept tabs on, and still subject to the privileges and responsibilities thereof.
Elaine is a bad example, IMO. She made a deal with the Summer Court when she was a barely trained neophyte Wizard in a desperate situation with no resources beyond the clothes on her back. Her mentor was dead and she didn't have any other WC contacts to reach out to.

There are probably more Wizards who choose to divorce themselves from WC politics and supernatural interference than there are who actively participate even tangentially. There are many thousands of tiny communities in the USA alone where the small population would mean the odds of even minor supernatural creatures showing up would be unlikely. A properly trained Wizard who minds their own business could easily blend into such a place for decades at a time, doing all their magic behind thresholds on warded property.

Again, this is the most reasonable explanation to me, because it doesn't take any great leaps of logic or extraordinary circumstances to excuse the seemingly low WC numbers.

If I were a Wizard, I sure as shit wouldn't be sticking my neck out to fight monsters and warlocks. I would be living my quiet life, not making waves or attracting any attention.

Most people are not inherently risk takers. Being a WC Wizard carries prestige and power within the supernatural community, but it also makes you a target.

Well we did just get Violence is Worship so that is a bit more essence gain when we need it.

Well we did just get Violence is Worship so that is a bit more essence gain when we need it.
I'm kind of afraid we'll literally never get to use that because of how proactive we are and how stealthy our enemies usually are they're not going to just Gore and fuck up and splatter the blood of everyone they kill around just because and there's literally never been a scenario where it would have triggered before also I'm kind of hoping that we never do run into a scenario where it works because that means someone will have absolutely gored and fucked up someone and shed enough blood to cover a room with it that we walk in on. It's a real double-edged sword violence is worship.

I've binged through the quesys... it took me 3 days to read through it. Kudos for length and quality!

If I may ask, why the character sheet is inclomplete? I.e.: Unbound Eschaton Shintai was gained, but it's not represented. Chosen signature charms are likewise not present. Is there a full version of the character sheet somewhere out there?

I'm also a bit curious why certain choices were not selected in charm purchases. For example "By Rage Recast" for "Energy Projection" would give an essence-free ranged attack inflicting 12 lethal aggravated damages. The "Fat Rending Aura" is a bonus point of lethal aggravated damage in clash, and effect can be supressed without much problem.

Molly's main weakness is the same as any other exalt: endurance. There is only so many charms that can be cast with limited and slowly regenerating essence pool. Too much encounters in short amount of time will leave one scrapping bottom of that pool. It was visible rather often in recent chapters. Any charm that allows her to fight longer without expending the essence is valuable.

I'm also wondering whether it is not possible to create splendor to store essence in. Even 2-3 points would be valuable. Charging penatly 2 to 1 would be nice. The 4 to 1 penalty would turn charging into strategic-use action, but it would still be worth it.
The QM gets around to it when they have the free time.

Energy Projection has a range of 10 yards, can only be used (Essence) times, and is a DC7 roll.
Sandstrike Blast is DC5, with range of either 60 yards or line of sight. Principle Invoking Onslaught is DC6, and can produce weapons with range in miles.

Ergo, Rage Recast Energy Projection is waste of a limited Rage Recast repurchase.

The charm Fat Rendering Aura does not have an IFF function, and is as much a danger to friends and bystanders as it is to foes. And to the environment as well.
Passing it up is deliberate.

Slowly regenerating Essence pool was a deliberate design decision by the writer of the game.
Tinkering with the Essence economy is a good way to break the combat system and the game.
And not in a fun way.

There are very few people I would trust with the system mastery to do so; Im not one of them, for the record.
This goes for most charms and new items as well; balance is kinda hard to do.
Which is why I largely stick to using existing shit.

Most people are not inherently risk takers. Being a WC Wizard carries prestige and power within the supernatural community, but it also makes you a target.
Elaine is a good example precisely because it demonstrates what it can take to survive as a young wizard without Council backing, and Elaine is supposed to be in Harry's general weight class as a wizard.
Almost as powerful, more precise.

She deliberately failed the tests to get into the Council when Carlos administered them specifically because you dont retire from it.

I dont buy it. Wizards are valuable assets to all players; even if the Council were willing to leave you alone, the rest of the world sure as fuck would not. Not if Drakul is hunting for new Blampire candidates, or the Reds looking to beef up their sorcery cadre, or Whampires and Court Fae looking to accumulate political power, or Wyldfae looking for a challenge.

And nevermind Outsiders and Old One cultists and Denarians as the wildcards.
The Dresdenverse is a death world. The fact that you dont believe in trouble, doesnt mean trouble doesnt believe in you.

When the Red Court engineered the beginning of the Vampire War, they explicitly went after stay at home wizards.
Similarly, when the Fomor started their own war in the immediate aftermath of Dresden wiping out the Reds, they did much the same thing, extending it down to people with talents and no training.

Dresden might be an outlier in terms of the number of scraps that he has gotten into, but there's a reason Council apprentices all get combat training, even when they arent necessarily temperamentally suited for it.

And no, magic doesnt work that way.
You cannot work or study magic in isolation from the rest of the world. Just the wards around your home are visible to anyone looking for them, and to most spirits.

Nevermind the ripples of you drawing on magic or working it, or even your aura; Dresden can detect magic users by touching thm, and I suspect spirits and the like are better at it.

Certainly the supernatural world always knows when there's a magic worker in town; for example, in Dead Beat Morty knew long before Dresden that necromancers were in town.
Because the ghosts knew.

And IMO, you'd have to accept that the wizards were daft to peace out of the Council and expose themselves to the subsequent hazards of not having the aegis of a Power

Being a magic user makes you a target. Being related to a magic user makes you a target.

The people the Fomor were kidnapping after Changes werent Council members. Neither were the women being murdered by the Skavis/Malvora conspiracy in White Night because they or their children might birth wizards in the future.
The majority of the 40k plus Starborn born in this cycle werent even wizards. Still got them killed.

Being a Council member narrows the number of people and factions willing to fuck with you to only the seriousface.
Which is not nothing, mind, but its much better than getting jumped by a random Black looking to make a rep, or a cultist looking for an extraspecial sacrifice.

I don't want to dispute to much (I'm new in the quest, so it's not my place), but I would like point that attack efficiency is not thrust of my questions / proposals.

You are absolutely right here. Energy Projection is absolutely inferior solution in term of pure combat firepower. Please note though, Sandstrike consumes essence to activate while Energy Projection requires none. It can be invoked for free. While it's not exactly defined how to it will behave in non-shintai form, I would expect it to be available number Essence times per scene.

And again, it's free.

Effect can be supressed, which results in lack of IFF not being much of a problem. Plus in long term Molly will max Anima Control merit making it non-issue.

Before that happen it is a free point of aggravated damage each time she attacks, or someone attacks her in melee. It's both action-free and essence free, which is very valuable. It's great supplementary damage-dealer. Those additional points adds up. Faster battle, means less essence used.

To be honest, I find it a rather strange stance to take.

Sure, tinkering with Essence economy can turn badly. But I don't see how character using existing charms which counts as parts of the system, can possibly break combat and the game. How could it, after all? If characters works within the system, how their decisions can break said system?

So do I. As far as I know, charms I'm asking about exists in the game and are available for purchase. Splendor to store essence is a question to Dragon Paradox, and not much of a stretch.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Any practicing magic user is pretty much untouchable reminder Dresden wards suck. Mostly because he refuses to use magic to make money. Most magic users will have an fortress just from putting random new up wards every few months around their mansion, by the time their Dresden's age.

Frankly their are better thing to take with by BRR like extra attacks.

We run up well over 400xp and have not spent a point on Anima control that not happening,

This is a WW storyteller derived system all combat if basicly rocket tag with the differnce being in how fast the rockets go. Combat lasting even 5 rounds aginst major bosses is rare. And a single point a turn does not matter when 99% of enemies automattically die after the first turn, while the reamining 1% will shrug off a single point.

Sure its free. Its also a 10-yard range ability that is cast at DC7 and can only be used (Essence) times.

Sandstrike Blast requires 1m to activate.
But it has a range of 60 yards, it casts at DC5, which makes it much easier to hit, and it will last for the rest of the scene, regardless of how many engagements need to happen in that time.

Principle Invoking Onslaught also costs 1m to activate.
But it casts at DC6, and is flexible enough to be used for everything from grenades to rocket launchers to bombs, where the range starts in hundreds of yards and the damage can go all the way up to Nuke.

We only get 1x Rage Recast purchase per Essence, which means a total of 5x ever.
Things we can spend on speed, on armor, on nightvision and other things.
Spending 1x of those on something as situational and limited as energy projection is....suboptimal.
Effect can be supressed, which results in lack of IFF not being much of a problem. Plus in long term Molly will max Anima Control merit making it non-issue.

Effect is only suppressed when you pass your Essence roll, which is not guaranteed at any time.
And if you fumble that Essence roll, like say if you are in an AoE that penalizes your DCs, you kill or cripple people.

Molly has Transcendent Anathema, which means that if she had Fat-Burning Aura in her charmset, at Essence 4 she would be putting out 2 Levels of Agg Damage/turn for everyone and everything withing 4 yards of her, which is a sphere approximately 8 yards across. Including her friends and allies.

Loot. Evidence. Environment, like when Molly was in Arianna's plane and there were civilians.
Furthermore, you mistake how it works. It doesnt add to an attack, it is a separate roll in itself.
Any serious enemy will have enough agg soak to ignore it.

The juice is just not worth the squeeze.

There are area of effect charms that do this kind of thing but better, like World-Grinding Devastation and All-Devouring Depths, for when you want to kill armies of lightly protected mooks.
They have IFF settings, or other charms that allow you to immunize friendlies.
o be honest, I find it a rather strange stance to take.

Because unintentional interactions are a thing to worry about when you are drawing from.

With regards to Essence?
You'll notice that Dragon-Blooded Exalts get to acquire the Jade Talisman Background, which allows them to store up to 5m of Essence in an artifact that can recharge.

Solaroid Exalts(Solars, Abyssals, Infernals) dont get it. Nor do Lunars or Sidereals or Alchemicals or Liminals.
Those Essence limitations were deliberate on the part of the author.

So do I. As far as I know, charms I'm asking about exists in the game and are available for purchase. Splendor to store essence is a question to Dragon Paradox, and not much of a stretch.
Please correct me if I'm mistaken.
There is, strictly speaking, no Splendor feature that will allow you to store Essence.
That appears to have been deliberate as well.

Any practicing magic user is pretty much untouchable reminder Dresden wards suck. Mostly because he refuses to use magic to make money. Most magic users will have an fortress just from putting random new up wards every few months around their mansion, by the time their Dresden's age.
This is not true.
The series backstory started with Harry Dresden killing a former senior Warden inside his house, inside his own wards.

Storm Front saw a demon bulldozing its way through Harry's wards, forcing him to flee his own house.
Summer Knight started with the news that Senior Council member Simon Petrovich and his entire crew getting murked in their own home base, in the middle of their own wards and protections, by a bunch of Red Court vampires.

Dead Beat saw a swarm of undead literally brute force their way through Harry's wards, again.

Small Favor started with the Denarians shattering the wards set up by Valkyrie Sigrun Gard in order to kidnap Marcone.
Changes ended with The Red King and his Court getting genocided in the middle of THEIR center of power, wards and all.
Ghost Story saw Harry invade and force his way through wards and protections established by Evil Bob + Corpsetaker.

Cold Days saw Sharkface and his merry band come close to pushing their way through the outer wards of Demonreach.
Peace Talks saw Ethniu and the Eye of Balor blast a hole through the wards of the several hundred year old imported wizard fortress that later became Castle Dresden.

The Queen of Air and Darkness Mab herself has had a group of someones, blow a hole in the gate and magical protections of Arctis Tor. We saw the aftermath at the beginning of this quest.
There is always a Bigger Fish, at least below the level of the White God.

Gained Book of Laws (First): Splendor ●●●●

@DragonParadox, I'm really sorry to bring this up again, but I've been confused by some of the debate in the thread and the description (although I'm probably just misreading it):

- Does breaking the First Law after signing your name in the book have consequences other than burning your name out of the Book (indicating you broke the First Law to the White Council, after which they presumably would launch an investigation into any justifying circumstances)?
- Or are you literally incapable of breaking the First Law after signing it (or do you have to roll against the Book to resist its binding to successfully break the First Law)?
- Or are you or your magic harmed or does some other effect backfire if you try to break the First Law?

Sorry if this is kicking a dead horse, I'm just uncertain if the effects discussed around the Book's creation are just to explain how it's made or to demonstrate what it does.

The dragon-blooded get to start with it as a recommended background not not just allowed but recommended because they are established families not because Essence economy there's nothing stopping a starting Celestial from having a jade Talisman background or from getting Jade necklaces in play there's just no reason for a Solar or a Lunar or a Sidereals to have them as a recommended background because all of them are supposed to be vanilla or close humans before exaltation which generally have exactly zero use for True Jade talismans.

As the designer of the Splendor, it should work like this:
1) After signing the book you are rendered incapable of breaking the Law. Mechanically, rolling to do so results in 0 successes, no matter what. Narratively, a new law of nature, akin to causality is created that makes you incapable of breaking the Law. It's an exalt-grade perfect effect. It's not a mental compulsion, so it doesn't matter if you are magically or otherwise compelled to break the Law, or are trying to do so unknowingly or under false premises. You just cannot do it.
2) A wizard can contest this, in the same way they get to contest charms. That's very hard (DC9 essence equivalent roll-off) , but in principle possible.
3) If they succesfully break the binding placed on them, the book indicates that they did so. To dodge this, you need access to the book and a lot of knowledge of Ancient Sorcery

We only get 1x Rage Recast purchase per Essence, which means a total of 5x ever
We can go past E5 btw, if your saying that it's not possible.
OK I remembered that you can divide things by fractional numbers ( ) so this is what between half and what one third looks like

E3: End of this Arc
E4: 215
E5: 461
E6/Elder: 952

I think we should go with this, not adding Circle XP since that would scale strangely as you get more circle mates. Sound fair?
Well for one because Uriel's energy comes from his patron, he does not just mooch off free floating stuff, though that would imply that the Fallen might be good reservoirs to drain essence off of to break the cap into celestial essence tiers. An Abyssal would have a much easier time of it, but hey the Infernal Exaltations are always willing to try any twisting of the natural order in their favor at least once. :V

I thought the point was that it was literally impossible to try breaking the binding. Molly even described it that way when she pitched it. The burn out functionality is a fail safe for if someone figures out how to do the impossible anyway.

The point being that it isn't a DC 9 roll off to break free, it's learning a mega project that probably requires a sponsor to attempt.

A 4 dot splendor is a significant investment for something that'd be held back by someone managing a few successes on a roll any serious wizard could make on the spot.

There was a ruling that a sufficiently powerful archmage could contrast the effects (I don't remember if the person bound can do this), but they wouldn't be able to conceal the effect being broken. So, it's:
1) Perfectly impossible to break the Law while bound,
2) Almost impossible to break the binding
3) Impossible to conceal the binding being nroken

No nationstate suffers those kinds of casualties and remains war-capable.
This I have to comment on. White Council is not a nation state. It's part a guild, part a cult, part a mafia. It doesn't function in a way nation-state does. At best, it functions as a government, not a nation. But this is an aside. One has to remember that the war WC is engaged in is an existential total war. They are not fighting for political interests. They are fighting for survival as a species. This affects the willingness to take losses.
If ~200 Wardens represent 5% of the wizard population, you have 4000 wizards.
If they represent 1%, you have 20,000 wizards.
And the Wardens represent too few wizards for me to buy the Council being North Korea levels of militarized.
Why? The primary function of WC is law and law enforcement. Wardens should be the majority of their membership.
There is, strictly speaking, no Splendor feature that will allow you to store Essence.
That appears to have been deliberate as well.
There is, however, one that restores your mote pool to full when fulfilling one's nature. So Molly, for example, would have an unlimited mote pool, essentially, when fighting I defense of reality to protect her Intimacies. A combination of Dreaming a New Dream (grant new Nature while in effect) and Essence Stocking Spirit can grant you infinite essence on demand for any given task.
Sandstrike Blast requires 1m to activate.
But it has a range of 60 yards, it casts at DC5, which makes it much easier to hit, and it will last for the rest of the scene, regardless of how many engagements need to happen in that time.

But it casts at DC6, and is flexible enough to be used for everything from grenades to rocket launchers to bombs, where the range starts in hundreds of yards and the damage can go all the way up to Nuke.
DPM to store guns and grenades costs essence in prep, not combat. This is my goto right now.

You are mistaken.
The chargen sections are explicit about what are appropriate Backgrounds for each Exalt type.
It says nothing about recommended, just what they are allowed.

Let me quote:
appropriate BaCKgrounds
When creating your Dragon-Blooded, all of the
following Backgrounds are appropriate choices:
• Allies (V20, p. 111)
• Alternate Identity (V20, p. 111)
• Arsenal (Hunter: The Reckoning, p. 120-121)
• Backup (M20, p. 306-307)
• Contacts (V20, p. 112)
• Cult (see p. page 290)
• Destiny (M20, p. 311-312)
• Fame (M20, p. 313-314)
• Familiar (see p. page 293)
• Fetish (W20, p. 137-138)
• Influence (V20, p. 114-115)
• Jade Talisman (Kindred of the East, p. 86-87)
• Magic Artifact (Kindred of the East, p. 87)
• Mentor (V20, p. 115)
• Resources (V20, p. 115-116)
Retainers (V20, p. 116)
• Secrets (W20 Changing Breeds, p. 212)
• Spies (M20, p. 325)
• Totem (W20, p. 140)
• Wonder (M20, p. 328)

Dragon-Blooded also have a few new Backgrounds
they may purchase, and there are a few things to note
about their use about the Backgrounds listed above.

Jade talisman
Dragon-Blooded may use talismans of pure jade
in much the same manner as the Hungry Dead, save
that they store their own elemental Essence within the
talismans rather than stolen Chi.

neW BaCKground: dragon nest
Your character has seized or discovered a Dragon
Nest – whatever the case may be, it's hers now. Rather
than rating its size or power, dots in this Background
measure how secure the Dragon Nest is from hostile
intrusion. Each dot of Dragon Nest increases the dif-
ficulty of all efforts to infiltrate or attack the Nest by
anyone you haven't granted access to, and a –1 difficul-
ty bonus to your attempts to spot, track, and identify
intruders, or to defend the Nest from assault.
Note that this Background represents a Dragon
Nest under the personal control of the character (or at
least a group of characters, if the players have pooled
their Background dots to buy it). It does not represent
access to a Nest controlled by the Exalt's family, which
she is permitted to access at their sufferance.

neW BaCKground: dragon-touChed
Dragon-Touched are relatives of the Terrestrial Ex-
alted who carry the blood but not the power of the ele-
mental dragons of old. Through this Background, the
character has direct and personal relationships with a
number of Dragon-Touched relatives. They know who
and what you truly are, and are willing to help you out
to the best of their abilities.
• Two Dragon-Touched
•• Five Dragon-Touched
••• 10 Dragon-Touched
•••• 20 Dragon-Touched
••••• 50 Dragon-Touched

neW BaCKground: supernatural status
No mere outsider, this Background reflects an Ex-
alt who has put in the work to embed herself in the
power structure of one of the great supernatural societ-
ies of the World of Darkness. This Background reflects
Abyssals who have made a home within the Camarilla
or Sabbat, or Solars throwing in their lot with one fac-
tor or another in the war for reality. Having more than
a few dots of this Background is unprecedented and
probably unthinkable, but that's par for the Exalted
course… provided that the other players are cool with
making your status a major plot element.

• Acknowledged; your peers recognize your
name when it comes up. You're a member
in good standing, if an unusual one.
•• Credible; you're considered noteworthy
within your society.
••• Respected; your word carries weight,
and you may have some manner of for-
mal position such as Harpy or Sheriff.
•••• Admired; you're looked up to, or per-
haps feared. You certainly hold some of-
fice of formal authority, such as Keeper
of Elysium or Seneschal.
••••• Revered; if you're not officially calling
the shots in your area now, it's only be-
cause you don't want to put that kind of
target on your back.

appropriate BaCKgrounds
When creating your Solar, all of the following
Backgrounds are appropriate choices:
• Allies (V20, p. 111)
• Alternate Identity (V20, p. 111)
• Arsenal (Hunter: The Reckoning, p. 120-121)
• Backup (M20, p. 306-307)
• Contacts (V20, p. 112)

Solars may also benefit from the following new
Backgrounds:

dragon nest
Your character has seized or discovered a Dragon
Nest – whichever the case may be, it's hers now. Rather
than rating its size or power, dots in this Background
measure how secure the Dragon Nest is from hostile
intrusion. Each dot of Dragon Nest increases the dif-
ficulty of all efforts to infiltrate or attack the Nest by
anyone you haven't granted access to, and a –1 difficul-
ty bonus to your attempts to spot, track, and identify
intruders, or to defend the Nest from assault.

past lives
Once in a while, some rare few Chosen find them-
selves lost in a waking dream of a time long ago, an
age of savage adventure and forgotten glories. When
this sudden vision fades, they may find that the skills
they possessed in the long-vanished days of yore have
carried them to victory.
Once per game session, a player may roll this Back-
ground's rating and add it to the Ability rating of a
roll she's about to make. This only works for Abilities
which might have existed in a timeless epoch of an-
cient heroes and savage fantasy. Melee, Athletics, and
Occult would all apply, but Past Lives can't help with a

No mere outsider, this Background reflects an Ex-

Abyssals who have made a home within the Camarilla
or Sabbat, or Solars throwing in their lot with one fac-

a few dots of this Background is unprecedented and
probably unthinkable, but that's par for the Exalted

making your status a major plot element.

Sidereals also have a few new Backgrounds they
may purchase, and there are a few things to note about
their use about the Backgrounds listed above.

arCane
Not only are Sidereals able to buy the Arcane Back-
ground (see M20, p. 305), but they gain two dots of it
for free. If you don't have Mage 20th Anniversary, the
short version is that each dot of Arcane adds one die to
all Stealth rolls, and subtracts one die from all attempts to
track the Sidereal down, identify her, or otherwise locate
her. Additionally, the more dots purchased, the harder a
time people have accurately remembering the Sidereal. At
3+ dots, photographs, computer records, and paperwork
about the Exalt have a way of losing themselves.

Fame
A Sidereal's Arcane rating is subtracted from the
maximum amount she can have in the Fame Back-
ground (see M20, p. 313-314). As a result, no Sidereal
can have higher than Fame ••• at best.

destiny
No Sidereal can have the Destiny Background (see
M20, p. 311-312), although all first-generation Sidere-
als once had that Background; Exaltation burned it
away. On a similar note, no Sidereal can take the Dark
Fate Flaw, or any similar Merit or Flaw which dictates
her fate. The Sidereal must write her own destiny.

Abyssals also have a few new Backgrounds they
may purchase, and there are a few things to note about
their use about the Backgrounds listed above.

artiFaCt
Artifacts are the magical items of the Underworld,
and are sadly only useful in that dark realm. Abyssals
crossing between worlds will need to either hide their
artifacts, secure them somehow with magic, or entrust
them to a wraith or spectre for safekeeping until they
return to collect them. Any artifact taken into the liv-
ing world becomes intangible and ephemeral, able to
be held and carried but otherwise wholly incapable of
interacting with, much less harming, any living crea-
ture or object. Such artifacts will fade away into noth-
ing over the span of a few hours if not quickly returned
to the Underworld.

speCtre notoriety
All Abyssals benefit from Notoriety ••• for free,
but this Notoriety only applies to spectres, who regard
them as something between heroes and royalty.

Whispers
Some Abyssals feel the voice of Oblivion whisper-
ing, crawling, skittering through the back of their
mind, a vague and comforting glow of nihilism
that is with them always. This is in fact the bar-
est and murkiest edge of the spectral hive-mind,
and with some practice, an Abyssal can learn to
momentarily tap into it and draw upon its vast re-
serves of experience and knowledge. Once per night,

demoniC guide
The first generation of Infernals gain their Exal-
tations from a demon or wicked spirit. Usually, that
spirit is dissolved into the spiritual glue that binds to-
gether host and Exaltation, but sometimes a measure
of it survives as a small, evil, occasionally-helpful voice
in the Exalt's head.

about the ways of the various Hells of the
spirit world. Gain a free Occult specialty in
a single hell of Yomi Wan, or in Malfeas.

Note that this Background represents a Dragon

least a group of characters, if the players have pooled
their Background dots to buy it). It does not represent
access to a Nest controlled by the Exalt's family, which
she is permitted to access at their sufferance.

which has never been successfully duplicated outside

those laboratories were located on Autochthonia, and

Pretty much every Exalt type besides Solars and Liminals has some background that isnt shared with others.

Lunars have the Hearts Blood Background.
Sidereals have Arcane and Fame(I think).
Abyssals have Artifact, Spectre Notoriety and Whispers.
Infernals have Demonic Familiar.
Alchemicals have Primium Countermeasures.
DBs have Jade Talisman and the Dragon-Touched.

This is no different from DBs, Alchemicals and Liminals not getting access to Past Lives, while every other Exalt does.
Or Liminals being specifically denied access to Totem.

We can go past E5 btw, if your saying that it's not possible.
Post E5 play is not mechanically supported in ExWoD. Or Ex2 for that matter.
Therefore I can make no comments about charm availability at that point, since the QM will essentially be making stuff up out of whole cloth at that point, and I have no insight into their thinking.

I think its a fair characterization until the QM says otherwise.
If the QM is going to have to make post-E5 mechanics up from scratch, there is nothing that says that we will get access to re-purchases of Rage Recast at E6 or higher.
There is nothing saying that we won't ever either.

The average White Council member likely interacts with far more non-members on a day to day basis then members. Which somewhat gets in the way of of thinking of them as a nation. A trade guild seems like a good comparison.

Inspired by that I looked up just how many neurosurgeons there are in the world and got ~70,000. Neurosurgeon is also a very rewarding field with a very high qualifications threshold. So it seems like a good place to start for ball park numbers. Saying that there is 1 white council wizard for every 10 Neurosurgeon seems reasonable.

Having more than
a few dots of this Background is unprecedented and
probably unthinkable, but that's par for the Exalted
course… provided that the other players are cool with
making your status a major plot element.

past lives
Once in a while, some rare few Chosen find them-
selves lost in a waking dream of a time long ago, an
age of savage adventure and forgotten glories. When

cient heroes and savage fantasy. Melee, Athletics, and
Occult would all apply, but Past Lives can't help with a

bring tears to your eyes.
•••• Once in a great while, you suddenly relive

Heart's Blood
All Lunars have the potential to consume the
heart's blood of beasts (and potentially other beings)
and thereby assume their shapes, but not all have done
so extensively before play begins. This Background re-
flects Lunar Exalted who have exercised some effort to
fill out their shapeshifting library.

• Wonder (M20, p. 328)

All Abyssals benefit from Notoriety ••• for free,
but this Notoriety only applies to spectres, who regard
them as something between heroes and royalty.

dragon nest
Your character has seized or discovered a Dragon
Nest – whichever the case may be, it's hers now. Rather

Once per night,
an Abyssal can substitute her Whispers rating in place

demoniC guide
The first generation of Infernals gain their Exal-
tations from a demon or wicked spirit. Usually, that
spirit is dissolved into the spiritual glue that binds to-
gether host and Exaltation, but sometimes a measure
of it survives as a small, evil, occasionally-helpful voice
in the Exalt's head.
X Your patron demon was destroyed utter-

other than Hardened Devil Body (ideally
one that will go on to form part of your
Shintai) as a permanent feature.
•• Your guide grants you occasional advice
about the ways of the various Hells of the
spirit world. Gain a free Occult specialty in
a single hell of Yomi Wan, or in Malfeas.
••• Your guide has extensive knowledge of
the courts of the demon realms. Add
two dice to all social interactions with
Banes or the denizens of Yomi Wan, as

•••• Your demon guide gives you a sort of
sixth sense. Reduce the difficulty of all

to the result of all Initiative rolls, as well

which might have existed in a timeless epoch of an-
cient heroes and savage fantasy. Melee, Athletics, and
Occult would all apply, but Past Lives can't help with a
Computer or Firearms roll.
• Once in a while you get moments of
déjà vu.
•• Sometimes there's the scent of exotic
spices on the air, or a memory of voices
you've never heard… but no, no actual
words.
••• You occasionally have vibrant flashes to
images or words that make no sense, but
bring tears to your eyes.
•••• Once in a great while, you suddenly relive
a few moments of a life from another Age.
••••• Now and again, in your darkest mo-
ments, you sometimes relive entire
short vignettes of the ancient lives of
those forgotten heroes whose power
you've inherited.

supernatural status
No mere outsider, this Background reflects an Ex-
alt who has put in the work to embed herself in the
power structure of one of the great supernatural societ-
ies of the World of Darkness. This Background reflects
Abyssals who have made a home within the Camarilla
or Sabbat, or Solars throwing in their lot with one fac-
tor or another in the war for reality. Having more than
a few dots of this Background is unprecedented and
probably unthinkable, but that's par for the Exalted
course… provided that the other players are cool with
making your status a major plot element.
• Acknowledged; your peers recognize your
name when it comes up. You're a member
in good standing, if an unusual one.
•• Credible; you're considered noteworthy
within your society.
••• Respected; your word carries weight,
and you may have some manner of for-
mal position such as Harpy or Sheriff.
•••• Admired; you're looked up to, or per-
haps feared. You certainly hold some of-
fice of formal authority, such as Keeper
of Elysium or Seneschal.
••••• Revered; if you're not officially calling
the shots in your area now, it's only be-
cause you don't want to put that kind of
target on your back.

appropriate BaCKgrounds
When creating your Alchemical, all of the follow-
ing Backgrounds are appropriate choices:
• Allies (V20, p. 111)
• Alternate Identity (V20, p. 111)
• Arsenal (Hunter: The Reckoning, p. 120-121)
• Backup (M20, p. 306-307)
• Contacts (V20, p. 112)
• Destiny (M20, p. 311-312)
• Fame (M20, p. 313-314)

• Influence (V20, p. 114-115)
• Jade Talisman (Kindred of the East, p. 86-87)
• Magic Artifact (Kindred of the East, p. 87)
• Mentor (V20, p. 115)

• Totem (W20, p. 140)
• Wonder (M20, p. 328)

Alchemicals may also benefit from the following
new Backgrounds:

neW BaCKground: dragon nest
Your character has seized or discovered a Dragon
Nest – whichever the case may be, it's hers now. Rather
than rating its size or power, dots in this Background
measure how secure the Dragon Nest is from hostile
intrusion. Each dot of Dragon Nest increases the dif-
ficulty of all efforts to infiltrate or attack the Nest by
anyone you haven't granted access to, and a –1 difficul-
ty bonus to your attempts to spot, track, and identify
intruders, or to defend the Nest from assault.
Note that this Background represents a Dragon
Nest under the personal control of the character (or at
least a group of characters, if the players have pooled
their Background dots to buy it). It does not represent
access to a Nest controlled by the Exalt's family, which
she is permitted to access at their sufferance.

neW B aCKground: primium C ountermeasures
The Alchemical's bones and muscles are alloyed
with a flexible microweave mesh of the Technocracy's
miraculous Primium, a magick-nullifying substance
which has never been successfully duplicated outside
of the laboratories of the Union. Alas that many of
those laboratories were located on Autochthonia, and
that The Computer possesses comprehensive under-
standing of Primium and was able to incorporate it
into the Essence matrices of some of its Chosen.
Each dot of this background, up to five dots, grants
the Exalt one innate die of countermagick.

Liminals also have a few new Backgrounds they
may purchase, and there are a few things to note about
their use of one of the common Backgrounds.

totem
Liminals may not purchase the Totem Background.
Spirits sense their unnatural origins and refuse to es-
tablish direct bonds with such ill-omened creatures.

You do notice all of those said appropriate backgrounds right. Not allowed or disallowed each exalted section has its own information on which backgrounds are exalted specific. Whispers for the Abyssal, no totem for the liminal so on and so forth it very explicitly does not go out of its way to disallow Jade talismans at all.

Also in your own quotes Alchemicals also have Jade talismans as an appropriate background.

You are interpreting the appropriate backgrounds in a way that seems to suggest that they are allowed or disallowed when he in his very explicit choosing has the most resource heavy factions the dragon-blooded ancient families and the technocracy backed or very least adjacent Alchemicals both possessed them.

You have a tendency to say things that aren't really backed up in the text that you quote. Jade talismans work for all of the exalted or you can make the claim based on where the appropriate background is it works only for alchemicals and dragon-blooded but that is a strange claim to make indeed.

When Holden goes out of his way to very specifically disallow certain backgrounds for certain exalted or say this background is this exalt type exclusive.

An off the cuff difficulty 9 check by an archmage is the essentially as secure as a bathroom privacy lock in the context of the people we're actually worried about trying to unbind people.

Unbreakable cuffs sound great, but if you've got to worry about expert lock picks then why bother? They'd be idiots to try anything other than lockpicking.

Frankly I think DF wizards are getting too much mileage out of this kind of thing. They don't have paradox or avatars, but somehow got to keep the demiurge tier reality warping despite not having it in canon.
