Arc 14 Post 39: Investigation on the Clock
Investigation on the Clock

18th of February 2007 A.D.

"The demon lord was opportunism, Wizard Mai" you interrupt, drawing eyes and attention away from Tiffany. "This entire...."you hunt for a word, before settling on "affair was not. Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 13/18 (Excelency)

You rise from your seat, motioning the others to follow you, thankful for the thin, but long lasting layer of oil still covering your face. This time nothing has seen fit to blow it up. "To have a Knight of the Order of the Blackened Denarius" you continue, turning a corner "enter your Halls today of all days? And senior Council members going missing? Doesn't strike me as coincidence."

As those too-knowing eyes turn to a focus on your way you wonder not for the first time how much she knows, or suspects of your nature. Her former apprentice thought you something akin to a Yama King which admittedly would make the present meeting pretty troubling, but did the ancient Wu Lung still think that or had she come upon some other theory after hearing your explanation, had she perhaps stumbled on some fragment of the impossible history you recall. If it could be found anywhere it would be among the shen.

"You speak sense Ms Carpenter, but if that one isindeed tangled in this ball of serpents why was he of so little use to them?"

"Little use my singed ass," McCoy grumbles. "You think Hellfire's cheap for the asking? Maybe the bastard's just late. The devil might take care for his own, but he ain't got a stopwatch."

"Late for what though, what were they trying to do?" Carlos cuts in. He has a lot more trouble than his seniors keeping the worry out of his voice, for all he's trying to be stoic.

"Thankfully we do have people to ask that, some of them might even be inclined to answer us without too much convincing thanks to Lydia." You give your friend a thumbs up in passing, though she looks busy, like she's having a conversation with someone only she can hear.

The White Council's cells have the air of a place built before humanism was a glimmer in the eye of Thomas Paine, much less human rights: barely enough room to stand in, maybe four strides to pace and only a bench for seating. Then again one imagines it's rare for the Council to keep prisoners long.

Morgan motions the guards to stand at ease, as much as the day allows. You throw them a look of encouragement then look to the prisoners:

"Hello wizards" you say, loud enough for all the warlocks to hear. "I have questions."

"Keep it short, job's not over," these words you don't hear so much as read on Donald Morgan's lips. On the one hand it's flattering that he thinks well enough of you to help with 'work'. On the other you can't help but thinking that no monster is more dangerous than one with a good sense of timing. Namshiel would know what this lot know and he'd have a good guess of how long it would take them to talk. Should you risk trying to talk to Peabody?

Another thought, more dangerous: Should I dangle the prospect of salvation over their heads? Even the Fallen would not know I can do that, I didn't know until less than an hour ago.

Who do you question

[] The surrendered warlocks, they know less but are likely to be more coperative
-[] Offer them a chance to be free of the effects of Black Magic (optional)
-[] Ask where Luccio was sent
-[] Ask about the location of the missing Senior Council Agents

[] Samuel Peabody
-[] Ask where Luccio was sent
-[] Ask about the location of the missing Senior Council Agents

[] Write in

OOC: Even with all your tricks there isn't even the theoretical posibility of selling the Council on showing any sort of clemency to Peabody hence why it is not an option for him.

Molly: I know exactly which Fallen Angel is hiding in your walls. I can smell him.
Ancient Mai: Uh, why are you so good at identifying Fallen Angels? Is it 'cause you're a Demon Queen?
Molly: Let's focus on the Fallen Angel, not the fallen Fallen Angel I made, the other one.
Ancient Mai: ... (where the hell is Arthur)

I am getting the impression that the QM wants to write that Peabody encounter.
Even though from an IC perspective, it would make more sense to talk to the other warlocks.

Because, honestly, the most straightforward solution would be
-Ask the warlocks about Luccio and Senior Council members
-Get Peabody's wizard staff/ magic focus/robe and use it to ask a Crown question about where the Merlin/LaFortier are; he was in their company when they left the War Room, so he knows where they should be and why.

Where is Luccio + the missing junior Wardens
Where is/what happened to the Merlin + LaFortier
Why is Namshiel here?

They are related questions.
And to be honest, we could probably answer the first two questions by simply asking Crown questions using the effects of the missing wizards. Its a lot harder to explain if we used the Crown though, since we're trying to keep it secret.

In regards to questioning Peabody I'm only concerned about the thing that has backdoor access to his head and senses. Is it viable to have Sophia remove that with Break the Bonds? Probably also the life link maybe.

By the text of the Gift?
She can free him whether or not he consents.
But it doesnt stop him from voluntarily reestablishing the link.

Mechanically the DC for the gift is 11-the target's willpower. Since a high willpower victim is easier to free it seems reasonable to infer that you cannot free someone whose will is pulling the other way since her DC would be 11+willpower (10 in this case).

As I understand it, its a simple Pass/Fail roll.
For an unwilling target? You pay the costs, activate the Gift and spend 1WP for an automatic success on the Man+Leadership roll. The opinion of the target is irrelevant.

It would certainly be narratively dramatic for Peabody to suddenly lose his phone connection.
Wont stop him reestablishing it, but it will take the same effort it took to set up the first time.

You cannot make a roll whose DC is higher than 9. This is to prevent everyone from being able to do everything at minimal competence by just wishing very hard. If you have never flown a plain before you do not get to roll pure dex, wish you could fly a plane really hard and obtain basic competence.

Broadly speaking this is to Molly's benefit since she is one of the experts, it just does not help her here.

Its funny you mention that as there's a guy who landed a plane with no prior flight experience.

^^^
Its also worth noting that the first supernatural nationstate that Molly/Sanctuary has a formal treaty with is the White Court.
With Las Vegas and the Library being only the second.

We dont have formal treaties with Odin, Winter, Summer, the White Council, the Archive, any of the Yama Kings or the Church, even though most of them could pick up the phone and call, and Molly would respond.
People are definitely going to do their best to read stuff into that.
Technically our first treaty was our Nuclear Test Eye Ban Treaty with Heaven, but that's not exactly public knowledge.

Not that it would apply here, but isn't one of the benefits of exalting that you get to at least try rolling anything? You don't get a lot of dice, but are always allowed to try even when anyone else would be blocked by training requirements or what have you.

You can roll in any field even if you are not trained yeah. But you cannot say make a athletics roll to get to the moon

Isn't Marcus/the hollow man still spread around the Halls like an evil fart right now? That sounds really exploitable if we can act before he flees. Hard to balance against the denarian, but still worth considering.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sub souls aren't exalts, but if she was a task she's allowed to try wouldn't be fully blocked by simply making it impossibly difficult.

1)Is that a house rule for this quest?
Because in ExWoD you very much can. In fact ALL rolls are capped at DC9, deliberately.
DIFFICULTY LOCK
In Exalted vs World of Darkness, the difficulty
of your rolls never goes over 9. If something suggests
that it should push the difficulty to 10, it remains at
9 instead.

Design Note: This is a decision made simply be-
cause the math on difficulty 10 rolls is fucked to the
point of being utterly nonfunctional on any roll where
you aren't invoking a Caste Ability or a specialty. Un-
less one of those mechanics is in play, the size of your
dice pool is literally irrelevant because every die has an
equal chance to add or take away a success

2)To my recollection, and a quick Google, things work like this for Abilities in V20 where you have no dots:
Knowledge: You cant roll at all
Skill: You roll Attribute with a +1DC penalty
Talent: You roll Attribute normally.

Ergo, if you have Brawl (a Talent) you can still roll pure Dex in a hand to hand fight.
If you have Drive 0 or Firearms 0 or Craft 0(all Skills) you can still attempt to drive a car or fly a plane or cook or shoot a gun, but at increased Difficulty.

If you have Academics 0 or Politics 0 or Finance 0(all Knowledges) you cant even begin to try.

Thats not a rule that bothers Exalts, though, I think
And many QMs appear to ignore it even in vanilla WoD games.
But thats how it works.

That would simply be impossible, no roll by QM fiat.
At least, not without a relevant charm/gift/supernatural ability.
Or it would be a roll that required a minimum number of successes.

The point of DCs is that something is at least theoretically possible under the current conditions.
If it isnt there wouldnt be a roll.

It is still the 18th of February.

[X] Point to Ancient Mai. "How about you interrogate someone who can actually tell us something and finally make yourself useful. Be quick. The job's not done yet."

[X] Point to Morgan. " Then how about one of you wizards? Interrogate them and get the information about where your commander is and make yourself useful, you fuckin sack bricks." In a mocking voice, "Make it quick. The job's not done yet."

[X] " You know what? It's been a long day. I don't have to take this shit. Fuckin make it quick, fuck off. Outsider cult busted wizards saved let's go home, fuck this. That all right with you guys" gesture to Lydia,Tiffany,Olivia and your people. "Cool, i'm taking these two." Carlos and Harry are picked up in telikinetic hands. " figure it out, or don't."

The white council just as useless as I feared cool

Well yeah, that it kind of my point with the gift. Inverting the willpower you would have to make an effective DC 20 roll.
