Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

If we can't block the Sight we should spite it instead.

Looking at Molly with unblockable vision is a bad idea and technically you have to reach a decently high bar to try it, but as @Alectai points out since we're only ever going to use against people who can clear it that doesn't mean anything to us.

So let's abuse their convenient link to increase the pain they endure for trying.

This subtle fascination takes appearance of a subtle glow that seems to trace the shape of invisible tattoos along the owner's arms.

Under mundane vision they are too indistinct to make out any details on, but when viewed with overtly supernatural senses like Wizard's Sight or Aura reading they resolve into a twisted sort of mirror.

They do not so much show an image as distort an impossible reflection of the viewer to show something that could be rather than something as deceptive as an illusion.

The precise form that this takes is always intensely personal and distressing, the vision of a fate they find so horrific that simply seeing it scours the soul and leaves them experiencing traumatic flashbacks for at least a week after the fact.

System:
Each turn supernatural sensory abilities like Hellscry Chakra or Wizard's Sight, but not sensory boosting abilities like low level Auspex, are used on the owner of this Splendor they roll permanent Willpower + Essence rating against a difficulty of 5. Each success strips 1 temporary point of willpower from the viewer.

If this strips more than half their permanent Willpower rating in temporary points before they avert their gaze it inflicts the PTSD derangement as described here.

9 (willpower) + 4 (essence) = 13 at difficulty 5 gives a 90% chance of 6+ successes.

Artisanal nightmares for everyone.

Why? You have to think about something to react to it. Even if they do anyway that doesn't mean they need to connect it to the source. If we set off a flash bang grenade I'd expect people to flinch but not to acknowledge Molly.

Edit:
Honestly this seems like a fairly arbitrary nerf.

The whole trade off with AtP is that it works around the stealth vs. perception arms race by going for the observer's reaction to what they see directly. It's why we have to be worried about getting caught on video records, someone with good mental defenses tanking it, and people without any special preparations defeating the effect entirely if we aren't mindful of what we're doing.

If you get noticed while invisible your identity isn't necessarily blown, you're still harder to attack, and if you're lucky people will still lose track of you in the chaos. AtP is all or nothing.

In exchange for navigating all of that it offers to change the question our opposition needs to answer from having better detection to having the right defenses and knowing when to use them.

But here the wizards just saw through a charm who's whole function is to make the degree of your perception irrelevant because our charm for managing how people react to us isn't strong enough to manage people's reaction to us.

The Sight beating BMI is fair play, and a Mind Sphere Warlock cooking up something to help them resist AtP at least makes sense, but this seems like allowing the exact sort of tactic the charm exists to counter work anyway for hand wave reasons.
Wizards are all about preparing based on information they're exploiting. If they make the wrong prep choices that has tactical consequences.

The thing they did to prepare doesn't seem like it should be relevant to the power we used. The entire point of AtP is to hide in a way that doesn't care about how good your perception is because it never tries to fight it.

AtP doesn't itself have anything to do with memory or ability to see the infernal, it specifically goes after the target's ability to think about what they know to exploit the difference between knowing and acting.

Seeing through AtP should make as much sense as sailing off the edge of the earth. The best sailing ship in the world can't do that, not because it's impossible to reach orbit at all but because you need a rocket to try.
To be honest we need to go the opposite way very simple something that occludes the features of our soul without making it invisible. Essentially a cloak that just Smooths out the working of the great maker on casual glances so there's no roll to lose your mind which allows us to instantly skate by using ATP. For real there's no reason to spite the Sight the instinct is to gouge out the eyes of anyone who can see us through ATP is real but to be honest we just need to make it so there's no need to invoke a defense against our presence.

You mean like BMI, which we also have up right now? It's what we've been using to hide our super aura so it's not like the quest has been treating it as purely physical.

The Sight beats illusion outright, which is why I picked showing horrible visions instead.

No I mean like a prodigy cloak that literally breaks up our spiritual silhouette. Does nothing to really hide our presence but occludes our features which considering our features can drive people insane is what we need to do the Sight can beat Illusions. We've never seen it peer through walls or anything physical.

Then we can just make a literal full body suit that will block it following this logic like power armor. And then we can hide with BMI that we are wearing it.

The Sight is specifically a perfect effect that defeats stuff like that. It always sees the truth. Which is why I was banking on AtP as a counter. Anything that tries to block their vision will fail, but the viewer is still a squishy human on the other side.

-[x]Flare Anima if they are using the sight to get though ATP might as well blind them.

This does nothing to occlude or otherwise inhibit the sight. Our anima is always present just not always mundanely visible.

Why spend Essence? We can flare by choice.

The Sight sees the truth. It doesn't get to select which. The Cloaks truth as a physical object would literally be over ours and the Sight yet again can't ignore physical objects.

If the purpose is to conceal or otherwise help hide our identity I don't see why not.

Broadly speaking, Prodigies want to be situational enchantments that you would want sometimes but not all the time, like "a cloak that makes its wearer invisible,"
rather than "a cloak that gives its wearer +2 Stamina," which, shit, I'd sleep in
that if I could. Also, a cloak (a concealing garment) that makes you invisible makes sense, while a cloak that makes you healthier and tougher… runs afoul of the "form and function" rule, above.

My bet on their current plan is that they want us constantly engaged so they can stop us from summoning help. This makes us less effective, allows them to control the narrative, and offer the opportunity to test our abilities.

Two key facts to remember are that they sent a spy because they didn't have good intelligence on how we fight and that the council has been internally speculating that Molly works like a vamp - by burning internal energy reserves to function. They don't know this for sure, but it's a good guess and the best they've got to work with.

I'd also bet that the sight!wizard isn't the thing that showed up. Too fast a turn around. It'd make more sense if they had reaction forces spread around and sight!wizard told them to come make noise to draw us out.

If we start fighting wizards without our wizards here it becomes easy to manipulate events to get the ignorant council members to help them. They might even be able to suggest we killed the people we rescued to rile them up.

The fight is bait, don't bite.

Prodigies are mortal magic and mortals can't block or obscure the sight. Splendors are deeper, but the only stealth effects they offer work similarly to AtP.

The sight isn't a physical sense, it only partially conforms to physical stuff. My read from the books is that it's more about what the Wizard can focus on than anything else. Nobodies clothes show up in the sight but Harry doesn't see them naked, he sees them in a metaphor for the who they are.

That's why a brick wall can stop the sight but a disguise doesn't. Also why the thaumaturgy they're doing right now works*.

A suit of power armor or whatever would still let the Wizard conceive of targeting "that person over there" and therefore target them.

That's why I went for shining a high power magical laser into their eyes. It doesn't matter if the sight also shows them the truth if even the image of your lie is harmful. It might be possible to try something similar to that in a prodigy, but we'd need to be clever about it to get something close to effective enough.

* Though I feel even already being crazy doesn't explain away why this doesn't drive them catatonic.

What we really need in a splendor is a proper cognito-hazard. Or worse. All who see my true form are turned to pillars of salt, kinds of thing.

The Goal isn't to block or obscure the Sight it is to dim or otherwise smooth out our features so a casual look won't trigger a sanity check it's the purpose isn't to hide or really anything like that it is to essentially make it so we can skate by using ATP if they need to study us to get the Mind break effect rather than run their gaze over us then we win because ATP prevents attention on things that aren't affecting the target. We know from Dresden there are different levels of intensity for running the Sight over things and places.
To put it another way we want a cloak that essentially says that mass of green fire that you can see is Molly Carpenter of The Infernal Exalted rather than Molly Carpenter [The Makers Prince of the Earth] those are functionally speaking the same thing one of them just triggers an insane sanity check simply because it involves seeing into ancient history and Into the Heart of the green sun.

RATIONALE
Like BronzeTongue said, never oblige your enemy. Dont take the bait; we dont have all that much Essence to burn on unnecessary fights.

CCC makes it easier for Molly to summon people from Sanctuary, so use it.
Also, once we have Sophia here, we can simply Invoke The Storm and drop a rainstorm over Edinburgh to disrupt any ongoing ritual magic or detection grid.

-[X] If possible, use Hollow Mind Possession on school CCTV to prevent enemy from surprising you.

I have only one issue with the 'keep summoning' option - it's cedeing the initiative, letting the conspirators act uncontested. If this works, we should at least stay informed about it. @BronzeTongue @uju32 your opinions?

To be clear, I am not completely satisfied with my plan at all.

The intent of my plan, which doesn't seem to have carried through, was to create a distraction, so we can summon reinforcements with less chance of immediate attack.

HMP costs Essence to use, and we are husbanding our Essence. Bad idea to waste Essence like that.
We cant afford to go looking for the central surveillance unit of this building, and that assumes that there is even CCTV in a gym building in Scotland, which isnt a given in 2007.

It literally takes seconds to step across into Sanctuary, and return with reinforcements. Shouldnt be an issue.
The more people we have here, the more actions we have available.
And the people we have in Sanctuary expand our surveillance options; Sophia, for example, has Attunement and Secret of Gaia for example, which would allow us to identify where the opposition are located at a distance.

I dont see how HMP is a distraction.
It just burns Essence to no real gain, and we're already at 10/18 Essence. We really should consider our expenses carefully.

If they dont know precisely where Molly is in the building, either they have to come to the building from their current location and case it room by room, or they have to try and cast something big enough to take out the entire building at once.
Either option costs them time and effort, and Molly finishes summoning people by then.

Waste of essence and focus in my mind. A demon in some school system doesn't help us much. It can't actually do anything and Molly already has an ambush detector.

This isn't ceding initiative, it's continuing our plan.

The opposition has a clear goal with this; they really do not want us bringing in support. By keeping us alone they gain numerous advantages that compound in value the longer they maintain them.

The pawn they sent is just a sacrifice sent to waste our essence and time.

Smoothing out features is another way of saying obscuring details. It's not a useful word game to play.

The silence spell is how they knew to look over here, but they don't seem to need it to localize us. Waste of essence.

@fictionfan @Goldfish @Azais
Guys?? In order to use Shadow Spite Curse we need to be holding a focus for the person or staring directly at them. We aren't doing either right now.
In context which I find odd that you missed because you found the quote we need as good a focus as we would to ask questions about someone. In this case we are in a scene with someone looking at us. So the scene is the focus.

Edit: Of course looking Dragonparadox kept nerfing the charm with every clarification. We shouldn't have got it at this point.

The hell? The quote says what it says. The charm isn't applicable here.

At least we can take comfort in the fact that no matter how annoying this is for us the people on the other side of this equation have a dramatically worse day than we are.

They were just twirling their villain mustaches in peace when suddenly the fuckwhat demon thing they're peeking at does the whole "look back at you through the TV screen" bit and shit immediately goes sideways.

Odin is acting funny, jury's out on if South America is going to hell or hell is going to South America, and you're pretty sure that someone younger than your favorite pair of socks is about to pull Morgan - the wizard equivalent of a nuclear supercarrier - along with the goddamn Blackstaff out of a hat directly onto your lawn. :V
