Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Doesn't Rashid have the ability to see Outsider shenanigans just by looking at someone? How is Peabody corrupted enough to allow one to see through his eyes given that? Seems like he should've been caught though maybe Rashid needs a reason to use it.
He can see specifically Outsider infestation.
According to him, its both experience and a specialized tool. I quote:
I nodded, thinking. "Okay," I said. "First, how do you know if the adversary has . . . infested someone?"
"Experience," he said. "Decades of it. The Sight can help, but . . ." Rashid hesitated. I recognized it instantly, the hiccup in one's thoughts when one stumbled over a truly hideous memory gained with the Sight, like I'd had with—
Ugh.
—the naagloshii.
"I don't recommend making a regular practice of it," he continued. "It's an art, not a skill, and it takes time. Time, or a bit of questionable attention from the Fates and a ridiculously enormous tool." He tapped a finger against his false eye.

I blinked, even though he didn't, and looked up at the massive gates stretching overhead. "Hell's bells. The gates . . . they're . . . some kind of spiritual CAT scanner?"
"Among many other things," he said. "But it's one of their functions, yes. Mostly it means that the adversary cannot use such tactics effectively here. As long as the Gatekeeper is vigilant, it rarely tries." The horns sounded again, and the muscles in his jaw tensed. "Next question."
This isnt a Outsider infiltration.

We dont know if the eye scanner works for this kind of scan outside of the area of the Gates. And I assume he doesnt use it on everyone anyway; we only see him use it once in canon, during Turn Coat.
Besides, he uses some sort of divination/time magic, and we dont know how it works IC or OOC.

The problem is that if it doesn't, it breaks the internal logic of the setting. Blackstaff is the council's hit wizard and trouble shooter. The one that puts things down. If he couldn't cut it, the council would have been done a long time ago.
I dont agree.

The Blackstaff is the Council's wetworks person, who is allowed to break the Laws in its defence. That doesnt make him the best investigator, or even necessarily the most powerful wizard. He certainly isnt counterintelligence; when the Council was hunting Morgan in Turn Coat, Ebenezar didnt show up anywhere until Dresden invited the Senior Council to Demonreach.

I mean, counterpoint: Kemmler.
Who had to be killed 7 times over several decades for it to take, and required the entire Council's viable military force to put him down in 1962.

McCoy was the Blackstaff through Kemmler's rise to power in the 19th century.
The New Madrid earthquakes which he takes the blame for were Dec 1811 - Feb 1812; if we followed your argument, the Council would have fallen back then. His inability to stop him didnt destroy the Council.

This isnt even the first time that a wizard has simultaneously been a Council wizard and doing shady shit; when Luccio ran into Grevane in A Fistful of Warlocks, she didnt recognize him, but thought he was a White Council wizard.
We have absolute significant informational advantage thanks to the Crown. Disrupting his contingencies (and he can't actually have that many for fear of them being discovered - he's an infiltrator, I remind you) is, if not trivial, than doable in a routine way.
Fixed that for you.
Discovering his contingencies is doable if we can acquire the foci; disrupting them will require significantly more investment of effort, especially if we are trying to keep the Crown secret. They dont just become non-viable because we know they exist.

Furthermore, it bears keeping in mind that when you have mind controlled a bunch of people, you have a bunch of patsies that you can use to set up contingencies or to deflect blame.
See Luccio and the murder of Aleron LaFortier in canon.

Dredging Perdition

28th of January 2007 A.D.

"Yeah, really strange given who I am now but I always have. Ice cream is mostly sugar though right and uh... butterflies like sugar and they are associated with Summer," Lilly says, obviously to give herself time to think through the offer and implication. This might be her first actual political active move within the Summer Court, one only facilitated by the little owl talisman swaying as she shifts in place. Now resolved her manner shifts "Yeah, I'll go out with you, you're paying. That is what you are going to ask right?"

The steel skinned fey rocks back on his heels for a moment, making the chair creak alarmingly under his weight before he nods and flashes a winning boy-next-door sort of smile. "I'd be pleased to take ya miss." The smile doesn't last long, a sigh, thin and tinny comes through. "Don't suppose any of you folks know where Nora is, she's my blood and my charge if she's anyone's... Nora Long."

At that you explain that she is safe inside your domain and you'd be more than happy to let them reunite now if wants. "She's the reason we even knew you were down there..."

Joe frowns. "Huh, guess that makes sense, what with all your friends, I just assumed... eh, doesn't matter."

"It may matter more than you think," Nergui speaks up sharply meeting the Wyldfae's eyes. "Where did you think the Queen of the Brass Court came from?"

"She feels like something... something from the Rifts, something like he was trying to make, the master of the City, a mortal soul bound to the emanations of the essence below. My first guess is it worked a mite too well. In the Old Country they said 'rare is the hand unburnt' that sets a forge over flames they know not the root of, but hey ho. Not like I wanted him to be unburnt." For the first time since you have met him something dark and vengeful passes over Joe's face, a reminder that for all he wears the mask of humankind way he is one of the fey older by far than the silver haired woman standing opposite to him.

"What was he trying to make?" you ask, a knot slowly tightening in your stomach

"What do the 'Kings' always mean to make?" Joe asks in weary disgust. "A weapon, never strong enough, never just enough. The real trick of it is how, see I heard he spent a long time trying to feed demons embers, that got you a lot of demons cooked from the inside, but recently there was talk of bringing still living folk down and stitching it in."

"Like the thing that was guarding you?" you put two and two together.

"I don't know, maybe." Joe admits he had never tried talking to the abomination. Idle talk tended to end badly in the Wicked City, though he explains that the thing had not been a guard, at least not primarily. It had been send down there weeks ago for him to study, see if he could make some sense of how its magical architecture worked, implying that either whoever made it was unable to explain themselves or it had been grown rather than made.

"What did you learn smith?" Tiffany asks. Before he could speak again she adds. "Count this as payment of your debt to me."

"What're you planin'?"

"Nothing of what you fear," she replies simply. "I am merely attempting to weight this new potential weapon in the hand of one whom all of us fear."

"Can't just be anyone," he finally admits. "They have to have the seeds of greatness in them like... the way sun-fire kindles you push and you push, slow at first then faster and faster until the fire starts at in the middle and then it just keeps going, forge of the gods."

Kindling/Awakening... Essence... that is what Mikaboshi wanted the Proving Ground for, Awakening the Essence of mortals so he could use them in his sick mechanisms, maybe even call forth another power like yours if he was lucky and the rest of existence very unlucky.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 3/15 (Occult Excellency)
Regained 2 Essence Now at 5/15 (Urge of the Forbidden)

Tiffany's favor had been only that one answer, momentous as it might have been. You wonder if it might be worth commissioning him on to work at studying the Proving Ground and the nature of Essence itself. He's the only one you know with any kind of head start.

[] Yes, ask Joe Magarac to continue his studies of Essence under new management (Costs a Favor)

[] No, you'll do this in house

OOC: So yeah, one more reason to screw over Mikaboshi, good thing you guys already did the punitive expedition as a distraction.

It's good payment. Would have preferred and expected him to just join us, but since he decided not to guess we would go for this.

Sounds like he's going for enlightened essence users and not precisely recreating the exalted, though he might have found himself on the other side of an angry infernal on accident even if we hadn't shown up.

Good that we cursed him though, seems unlikely he'll have the bandwidth to play with this anytime soon.

-[X] Empathy excellency
-[X] Empathize that this isn't about weapons. It's about expanding the horizons of what is possible, about how people can be more.

I'm 100% sure that the summer lady can't have sex here due to the duality of the courts and their maiden mantle.

That costs us a summer favour, frankly joe magrac isn't worth it.

Like i am pretty sure we can do it bettwr in house.

I'd like him just working for us in general, but this seems to be the closest option currently.

[X] No, you'll do this in house

This does not seem to be worth spending a favor on.

So the abomination was the product of a different, parallel weapon project.
One that we didnt get to see.
Japanese!Kemmler at it again.

This is why we should have actually done the infiltration; we might have gotten actual independent information on this project.
Maybe even stumbled on the person who made the Abomination.
Everytime we ignore the opportunity for more intel we end up regretting it.

Looks like he was trying to create Enlightened mortals, who can wield Essence. Maybe even an Exigent or a god, though I dont think Yama Kings have the metaphysical heft to create any such thing. That said? There's a non-zero chance that he could blunder his way into creating a Liminal Exalt, assuming that Grandmother is still down there somewhere.

Troublesome.

Im guessing we could use the Essence cage/abomination's parts as a focus to identify the maker, or the project that it came from. But thats going to be spotty, incomplete information.
At best. Annoying.

@DragonParadox
QUESTION
What favor is this from? Summer or Joe Magarac?
Because if thats a Summer Favor, I sure as fuck refuse.
Im not that curious.

I'm 100% sure that the summer lady can't have sex here due to the duality of the courts and their maiden mantle.
You can date, have an affair, even a longterm relationship, and not have sex of any kind.
There are happy heterosexual married couples who have never had physical intercourse.

I'm aware.
She is definitely not allowed to, as for can't... ask Mab where her kids came from. ;)

Not saying it will happen, just a reminder that fey rules are far from airtight by design.
I mean Mab is the queen did you kill off previous queens cause you kinda ficked up the whole timeline by making Maeve from Camelot era? As it basically makes it impossible for a lady and queen to have died.

Cause it would mean that Dresden is the first to kill a lady.

Way too risky. Hell is not our friend and we were already several layers of scope creep in. There's always something more to be bad if everything goes perfectly, but at some point you have to draw the line as a matter of practicality and focus on your core task.

The maker is Joe, everyone prior to him just blew up their victims.

Edit:

Whoops, not sure how I missed that. Whoever it is is gone now one way or the other, so I'm not too concerned.

Maybe a bit of both.

The idea, if I can tell it right, is that a mortal with Essence might be better able to surivive the rift-energy?

So if Mikaboshi had successes with his Proving Ground project, he could use those as test-subjects for the project Copyright-free-Infernals.

Luckily it didn't get that far.

Anyone being able to make true exalted breaks significant parts of the lore, I think it should be discarded out of hand that Mikaboshi can match Autochthon in any meaningful capacity.

Maybe he could steal one, or make a powerful essence user to play knock off exalt, but not a real peer.

I mean... a knock off exalted build from scrap can still kill just fine. Mikaboshi is not a perfectionist, he is more the brutal utilitarian sort.

I'm not saying he couldn't make something dangerous, I just think the mechanics shouldn't get divorced from the lore.

If Mikaboshi makes a totally-not-exalt that gets all the core exalted benefits then it dilutes the narrative behind them in my opinion.

If you could do that with the Yozi's corpse-farts on top of everything else the OG primordials had I struggle to see how the exalted host could have won at all.

I mean Lydia has all the core exalted benefits and she definitely was not made during the Age of Legends. Reaching the heights of the Celestial Exalted, much less the Solariods, that is the greater ask.
