Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

I don't think a fae is a Creature of Darkness, so probably not?
Edit: mab is literally called the queen of air and darkness. jim butcher has described the courts as influenced by human free will with summer being influenced by the arts, creating beauty, creating culture, that feeds into summer. the stuff that is conflict, (which jim says there is far far more of in the world than the stuff that feeds summer)the stuff that is trying to survive that feeds into winters power. He then goes on to say the courts are there for people and that their more attached to people than the natural world.

Edit: finally found what he said about it
52:09 a fan asks about how climate change would affect winter and summer court and he explained a few more things on top of that.
sorry lots of edits to get my words right. quest could be different though obviously. Lot of stuff is affected by belief in canon though.
Edit: okay so last edit I swear I'm sorry so yeah some fae definitely qualify as creatures of darkness mostly winter and some wyld fae now summer fae or at least 99% of them very much might even be the opposite though.

@DragonParadox just how human does a devil tyrant Shintai have to be?

I ask since Shintai stuff is likely to come up with the exp vote, and it seems relevant to creating compromise options between full monster and dollar store Denarian.

Can we do things like have Molly transform into green fire that acts like a solid, or molten brass that somehow holds her shape?

How about something really exotic like an empty shell of brass shaped like Molly that's bigger on the inside for the purposes of holding horrific imagery of her themes?

Not anything mechanically useful over baseline Devil tyrants, just something to find a middle ground between the people who want to fit inside buildings and those of us who want an antediluvian monstrosity. Or at least to avoid looking like we take orders from Nicodemus.

offhand will our appearance now permanently affect our transformation? Cause if so I wanna raise our appearance once or twice next time along with essence 2. Definitely essence 2 no matter what that stuffs nice.

Yes I was referring to this. And the whole "being completely forgotten renders them powerless" thing
yeah thats fair though its probably somewhat more nuanced forgotten things definitely exist or maybe their just mostly forgotten. also probably a process of centuries rather than just suddenly all gone. Man it'd be funny to be a sidereal here as we'd play stupid information wars against old ones and species we really don't like.

I think that was more of a special rule for outsiders than a normal practice.

If I recall things correctly, we first get introduced to the whole information suppression thing in a short story from Thomas's perspective. The plot of which involved Thomas helping Harry with a case while also trying to con him out of a book of dark rituals some evil sorcerer had because he knew that he'd turn it over to the council, and that the council's standard response was to publish those sorts of books as widely as possible.

The reason being that you can basically DDOS Cthulhu if enough people try to call on it, so rituals that call on a particular entity to operate can be rendered toothless by mass distribution.

That being a response so standard that the faction of the white court fighting the outsiders was worried the white council would do it before they even realized what they had implies it's so universally effective it's practically reflexive.

If that's the case, then it follows that entities that benefit from secrecy overwhelmingly outnumber those that benefit from notoriety to the point that the latter might as well not exist.

its not its noted things can be forgotten other than outsiders.

Yeah, but the white council isn't dumb. Either the requirements for being truly forgotten are so specific that getting the proverbial genie back in the bottle is basically impossible once it's gotten to the point that someone's wrote a book on it, or the category of beings that can be locked out that way is so narrow that they don't matter 99% of the time.

Otherwise deliberately publishing obscure lore used to invoke shady entities would be a horrible idea, and they'd be idiots to adopt it as a reflex.

oh yeah its not easy its just possible usually its done deliberately over the course of like a century and often it fails the venatori at one point tried to get rid of the fae obviously didn't work out. presumably before brother grimm was a thing. Also would be a hilariously bad idea given what guards the gates we can assume most weren't aware of that very well kept secret well at least those who weren't being fucked with by nemesis this was centuries ago though. lot of hints mab helped in the creation of books about the fae and the grimm stuff. Some things have seemed to at least of lost power of some kind or another due to belief thats a whole different issue though. I hope we can help the archive track nemesis infected all if possible and hunt down those cults. though nemesis tracking being something our crown can't do makes plenty of sense to me since their literally outsiders of reality.

in fairness while its part of them its only a portion of their soul if that like as far as I know the hunger could literally be some kind of minor demon bonded to their soul.

also could the charm allows a fae to lie?

No, that is not incidental harm to the fey as a consequence of their power, it is intrinsic to what makes them fey. To get a fey to lie you would need some Nemesis grade stuff.

I know for a fact some charms would allow it not that we'd likely ever want to open that rabbit hole or maybe even get said powers period. Good to know though I wouldn't want fae lying its a huge strength in many ways really.

The armor filled with the dread light of her anima is already given as an example to one of the other ones and form of fire would be the natural disaster one. You can totally make an antediluvian monstrosity that fits inside buildings though, there are aspects that make the Shintai really flexible or you could build a devil beast like a dragon or serpent

I was thinking about the Fallen and I for one really hope that if the Devil ever appears in the story, we don't use the Dresden-Devil, but the WoD-Lucifer.

I just love the guy, he is usually portrayed as a well-intentioned screw-up, who for all his wisdom and power makes things worse whenever he acts, from the original Rebellion to his freeing of the Earthbound from Hell. Always good intentions, always terrible consequences, always enough arrogance left to try something else later.

Edit: He also more-or-less founded the Abrahamic religions and later took part in the renaissance and enlightenment.

Eh it'd have to be very different from dresden files since it's pretty much been confirmed they've done things. And wod is only tangentially related in this quest I think with some parts. Though I guess you could always argue it's Satan and lucifer as separate things it also adds a whole new fucked up cosmology so as nice as they are I'd rather them not exist.

I'd love to point out that nowhere in the bible is Satan actually called lucifer but this is set in DF so the mainstream will have hit him hard, not that he probably cares he doesn't really have to do any work nowadays people can just be shit heads over the internet which is always easier than face to face.

Something something mantles also apparently being older than the universe in canon so I doubt anyone actually has their true name well probably.

Yeah but it would be pretty funny to see Satan go on a rant about how because of some stupid fucking scholar he's now a fucking Babylonian king of all things as well as fucking Ishtar and Aphrodite and Astarte because he's been conflated with Venus.

Arc 1 Post 27: Measure of Mercy
Measure of Mercy

10th of July 2006 A.D.

Hospitals have always creeped you out, the antiseptic smell wafting over sick and blood, the harried people in the waiting room clutching to purses and packets and flowers for dear life as if they could somehow mend whatever ailment had brought their loved ones here, people in pain and people dazed. At least Mercy Hospital doesn't have those cutesy cartoon characters on the walls the way children's hospitals do. You swear those things could look into your soul.

"Mayhap they could," Usum opines as you pass the front desk. "Houses of healing, places of congregation for the sick, the desperate and the dying would make excellent hunting grounds for those spirits that feast on misery. What better place to spy a victim from than eyes that have already been painted in place? That is not even accounting for the unquiet dead who are most often bound to the place of their passing. The living are many in this city the dead are more..."

With that lovely thought in mind you keep looking around corners as though expecting to see some ghost or ghoul but all you are greeted with are busy doctors overworked nurses and visitors hurrying to the side of family and friends. Between school hours and your teachers still handing out homework on the last week of term it is seven pm, only an hour to closing by the time you make it to the hospital.

Only it's not the thought of being rushed that makes your breath catch in your throat is it Molly? you think, hesitating on the threshold of the salon roses gripped so tightly in hand you almost snap the stems. What are you going to say to Rosie? The truth would be fairest after all you had done to her, but it would also be cruel, you can't tell the truth about what you did, without telling the bigger and more terrible truth about the world. Magic is real and Hell is real and evil wizards and vampires and a thousand other nightmares out of the forgotten stories of mankind.

There is a nurse inside changing the drip bag things, a Latino lady with her hair just starting to turn grey and laugh lines around her eyes. "Oh you have come to visit honey? Are you Molly? She's been asking about you."

Guilt hurts a lot more than the ache of old bullet wounds. Turning to look at the bed you see Rosie is sleeping, though not peacefully, her messy black hair is plastered to her head with sweat and her lips twisted into a grimace.

"I've been..." you cut yourself off. There's no need to explain yourself to strangers. "Could you give us a little space please?"

She gives you a once over. White blouse, pencil skirt and flats are about as inoffensive as you could dress, but you still carry an unnatural chill in the stuffy hospital that touches more than flesh. A little push the other way would not hurt surely...

Lost 1 Essence

"You're not family are you? Her mother..."

It's hard to keep back a grimace. You can well imagine what Mrs Wilson had to say about any and all of Rosie's friends, you had hoped it would be her aunt Liza who was footing the bills since she was a lot less likely to try to lay down stupid rules.

"Said she wasn't to take visitors outside her family."

Right because I'm likely to pass her some Heroin under the table. Keeping the flash of anger off your face you offer up instead a sheepish smile. "Right I'll.. I just wanted to give her some flowers and see how she's doing. This was all so sudden and I don't even know what's going on."

The nurse gives you a sympathetic look. "The doctors are still running tests, they don't know for sure either. Sometimes it's just a lot of little things catching up to you at once, especially with a baby so young..." She finishes than last of her fiddling with the bag then nods. "Alright dear you can talk to her. If they let you in at the front desk it's not on me to stop you."

You are pretty sure they let you through at the front desk because no one dared get in your way, but you will take what you can get. Once the click of the nurse's shoes had faded you turn to Rosie.

"Hey... wake up sleepyhead," you whisper gently.

Soft brown eyes open open blearily. "Molly, you're OK," she says with a relieved smile.

"Why would I not be OK?" you ask bemused.

"I had..." she shakes her head, wincing a little from sleeping crooked. "It's silly. I had these dreams you were nailed to a tree of ice in a dark courtyard... and screaming.... screaming so bad your voice broke."

From the outside it must have looked like you had turned into an actual ice sculpture, but inside your mind is going a thousand miles a second trying to make sense of it... of Rosie having true visions. "When minds break, when souls are wounded at times the jagged edges will write with blood upon the walls of the world," Usum offers. Insight from pain, from suffering, you know it to be, perhaps brought on by the nearness of your two fates before, the rushing green fire burned your fate to ash.

It might fade you know, like sparks failing to catch in wet kindling, but to confirm the truth of what she had seen would be to blow upon it, to ensure the gift endures. Would be be a gift you wonder and then you feel like the world's biggest hypocrite for asking the question, but she looks so frail though and she is going to have a baby. Can she deal with the craziness out there? Do you have a right to decide that for her after all you had already done?

I realized that, but it seemed like an IC thing for Molly to do.
If y'all voted for my plan without taking that into account, I'm willing to change it for a different option. Maybe we can get Michael to take us to McAnally's or something else?
Just pointing it out ahead of time.
Because a majority of people chose to stay home and live under Chafity's rules instead of then openly disagreeing and walking out, and I'd like to make sure noone complains if and when it comes to pass that sneaking out blows up in our face.

Keep in mind this is not a setting to her, this is her life. In the course of this life her mother extracted from her a promise she did not want to give and punished her for, again as far as Molly is concerned, trying to help people in need. If you guys want to follow it to the letter and the spirit that is fine, but she is not going to do that because abstract metaphysics say Promises are Important. The only person near her that would even think of making the argument is Usum... and he is both a demon and bound to serve the will of the Chosen.
Counterpoint:
She just suffered through a series of significant life-altering events, including a personal message from an Archangel. And her father just spent a significant amount of time impressing on her the importance of being known to keep your agreements in the supernatural world of which she is now a part.

Enough IC reason for it to go either way IMO.

QUESTION
Does Countermagic require a free hand? To my recollection Dresdenverse magic usually came with somatic gestures.

Not anything mechanically useful over baseline Devil tyrants, just something to find a middle ground between the people who want to fit inside buildings and those of us who want an antediluvian monstrosity. Or at least to avoid looking like we take orders from Nicodemus.
1)Green fire? Molten brass?
That looks like its firmly in the realm of Incarnate Apotheosis Shintai, not Devil-Tyrant.
Empty shell is Demon Emperor Shintai, at least as described.

2)Note that most Denarians have 2 or more shintai modes, at least one of which is Devil-Tyrant adjacent, but the rest spam the gamut of looks. They just tend towards monstrosity.

For example, Polonius Lartessa has a humanoid mantid form, but also has a swarm form of thousands of small mantids.
Deirdre Archleone has metallic scales, panthers claws, reverse-jointed legs, and a ten to fifteen foot long expanse of prehensile hair, but her hair can also shift itself into a functioning set of fins and tails.

3) Devil-Tyrant Avatar Shintai
+1 Strength, + 4 Dex, +1 Stamina
7x Demonic Aspects
  • 2x Demon Armor: +4 Soak
  • 2x Hardened Devil Body: +6 (-0) HLs
  • 1x Extra Limbs: Telekinesis. Alternatively, a Stand a la Nicodemus' mobile shadow.
  • 1x Swift Stride: x2 Movement Speed
  • 1x Energy Projection: Sword/Eye beams

Since we're using our next Rage Recast to acquire Flight, no need for it in the shintai build.
IMO, anyway.

Can't we only take Demon Armor one time?

Though energy projection is...very short ranged. And uses Athletics to aim. So I don't think its very good.

Otherwise I like it.
