Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Three suggestions:
1)Ask his name
2)Ask if they have been doing this in other cities
3)Ask if he's aware of any competing group/groups trying to do the same thing or take credit for it
Good ideas, though I feel that the second one has been covered

Ok, this should be it, I guess.

We can cover those with the corpses of one of the names we already have.
Let Murphy do her cop thing.
The point is to have that information BEFORE meeting with Lara.
This isn't an equity thing; there's no reason Molly and Murphy can't BOTH ask questions.

And if Malvora is involved, there's a distinct possibility that asking questions that ping on him might result in Outsider backlash.
In which case I'd prefer Molly to trigger it; she's a lot more survivable.

How about his financial information while we're at it? Murphy might frown on that, but I'm sure the Order could use the funds.

1)We dont need it, we can fund the Order, and he might have human family that does need the money upon his demise.

He did go to a Columbus public high school, he had human family that wasn't filthy rich.
He might have a partner, or a kid even.

2)Financial activity in the accounts of a missing person make you or the beneficiary a person of interest in his disappearance should an investigation get underway.
The juice is not worth the squeeze.

Financial activity on the other side of the country, however, could make it seem like he isn't so much missing as on the run.

A little RVD use and a bit of effort for a disguise and he could be seen using an ATM in southern California, or even further afield.

Not when we are Resources 4 and can make a minimum of 400k with 1 AP. There's zero chance his current account has anything near half of the.

And like my edit pointed out, he might have human family. Family who havent done anything as far as we know.
Bad karma.

Steal not from the mouths of widows and orphans was kinda a big thing in the Old Testament.

I don't seriously think it would be worth extracting his assets, too much hassle for too little gain, as you said. But it would be trivially easy to make it look like he's fleeing rather than dead.

Just a thought, in case this plot doesn't get nipped in the bud fast enough to prevent his missing status from being an issue.

As funny as turning to Murphy and doing this:

With the supernatural would be, she's missing a lot of context. She's also not really set up to effectively communicate with our target here.

Lydia calmed him down a bit, but he's still fairly incoherent and fundamentally different than he was as a mortal. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more difficult for Murphy on a on a baseline level.
In ExWoD (page 83) normal Wraiths are not CoDs.

They are propably a normal part of reality by now?
Sure, they shouldn't stick around too long in the lands of the living, but they generally seem to be okay and not inherently on the Most High's shitlist.
Hmm... in that case yeah it does not apply, that drops two of your successes, but Molly still gets it well enough since it is a Key ability so 1s don't subtract.
Worth noting that ExWoD does list specters as CoD in that section:

creatUres of darkness...?
To formally cover the major supernatural beings of the World of Darkness:
Creature ...of Darkness?
Most vampires Yes
Vampires in Golconda
No
Most werewolves/Fera No
Black Spiral Dancers
Yes
Banes Yes
Fomori

Most mages No
Nephandi

Most wraiths No
Spectres

Most changelings No

In general, mortals "touched" by the supernatu- ral such as ghouls and Kinfolk aren't creatures of darkness. If in doubt, assume that anything that is undead, intrinsically connected to darkness or nightmares, or has been corrupted by or born from forces of cosmic corruption or entropy is a creature of darkness, while anything else isn't. This does, it should be noted, mean that some creatures of dark- ness aren't really "evil" in the conventional sense (Sluagh fairies, for example, are born of nightmares but may want to do nothing more offensive than drink tea in their favorite musty old bookshop and frighten children who are too loud), but intrinsical- ly evil beings are always creatures of darkness (such as Banes). Abyssal, Liminal, and Infernal Exalted are always creatures of darkness.
I wouldn't call DF ghosts a natural and accepted part of the world either. In canon they have to have an anchor or shielded spot to retreat to when dawn comes around or it will erase all but the strongest of them, and even they get weakened by it.

Seems like enough to qualify as associated with darkness per the explanatory bit at the end of the table even if ghosts aren't penalized for being undead without necromancy being involved.
Who else did you and your co-conspirators plan to attack?
--[X] Who else did you and your co-conspirators already attack as a part of this plan?
Do we want to do this bit in front of Murphy?

We just voted not to reveal the ordo, and these items would compromise that.

I know you directly don't have a problem with that, but contradicting ourselves IC like this comes off as incompetent.

I dunno about the "he might have innocent family" argument, we definitely have no info on that either way. However I 100% weird financial activity right after a suspicious disappearance is heat that is not needed or welcome. Especially since the beneficiary, The Order of the Cauldron, does technically contain his murderer.

Hmm, that's a good point, but in this instance, those that have been attacked already are likely dead or in need of rescue, their informational security doesn't matter in face of that. Those that were planned to be attacked... We can deal with that. It's "directly in danger" vs "might be in danger" thing. At least to me. We value their privacy, but we value their lives more.

That's fair as far as it goes, but harder to argue when the additional force bought by exposure isn't super relevant.

Murphy is great, but when you're already bringing a Ford class super carrier and a Ticonderoga class missile cruiser to the fight adding nine millimeter pistol probably isn't going to do much.

There's stuff she can do that we can't, but it's not clear if any of it will actually be relevant.

Which clearly means we should steal everything we can from the Raiths and Skavis we'll kill in the course of this.
Their families can certainly take the loss.
1)This guy is a Skavis. I think.

2) Grabbing their money draws unnecessary aggro from other family members and associates who might otherwise think thats fair.

If we're looking to impose monetary penalties, discuss that with Lara and have it paid to the families of the victims.Do it like an Accord signatory exacting monetary penalties for material injury, not an adventurer doing a smash and grab.

That way, we can calibrate it to actually matter to their House head and House assets instead of basically picking the pockets of the dead, which only hurts immediate family

3)Moving large amounts of money draws attention of mortal authorities. US Treasury tracks all financial transactions above $10,000.

And given as you dont know how they made their money, grabbing their cash or assets might very easily associate you with shit you dont want to be tainted by, or draw the attention of existing investigations or surveillance.

The juice is just not worth the squeeze.
There is loot that it might be worth our while to grab on occasion, but it's almost all physical stuff, like the Alchemy lab we looted from the Pathfinders. Or the Will's magic sword.

Money isnt really one of them.
Do we want to do this bit in front of Murphy?

They have had no Ordo victims in Chicago so far.
They may have killed other independent practitioners resident in Chicago, but no Cauldron members.

Canonically a buncha people already got killed in other cities. Thats in my opinion important for Molly to discover before meeting Lara.

Yes, but one of the questions I quoted was related to who they are planning to attack, which demonstrably includes ordo members. Asking about the past doesn't require we ask about the present.

I am willing to trust Murphy to ask the right questions even if she doesn't have our meta knowledge.

OK, looks like we are not letting the cop to her first solo ghost interrogation (fun as that would have been to write :V )

Arc 8 Post 11: Ants in the Dark
Ants in the Dark

10th of November 2006 A.D.

Dead men tell no tales the old saying goes, yet older still are other stories told, of Tiresias the seer who spoke to Odysseus of the curse that Poseidon had laid upon him for what reason had a dead man to fear even the gods. So it goes here, with eyes in shadow you peer through him and see the roiling resentment in the heart of he who was Demetrius Skavis, like a caged beast taught to fear whip and flame and you stoke it first to hate that cracks frosted puddles then wrath that sends the dumpster rattling rattling with every word out of his mouth. Something tells you this isn't proper police procedure... and by something you mean the ever more alarmed look on the detective's face, but demon's whispers have never lead you astray when it comes to using someone's darker nature. Neither does it do so now...

Lost 2 Essence -> Now at 8/15 (Excellency and ATB)

Demetrius had been the whipping boy for the Skavis heir in life, though the lesson here was not for the prince to learn how not to misbehave, it was to learn to accept cruelty done to a cherished playmate. The relationship had grown from playmate to underling to toy with Demetrius being at the end conditioned to respond to... words that reminded him of better days, not tone, not meaning just the words: 'Go fetch me that witch to string up Dede'

They were going to use a torture technique that had once been used to get confessions from suspected witches, the strappado or simply the corda.

"Jesus H Christ..." You almost miss detective Murphy's next words. "They did that shit in Vietnam."

"There are only so many ways to torture someone," Lydia whispers. She just sounds cold, you recognize the signs of someone leaning deep into their power to anchor herself.

The Skavis agents were supposed to kill her afterwards, by hanging."Said we were allowed to fail a few times, as a treat."

Right, despair eaters. Focus on the practicalities Molly, you can feel sick in your own time, you remind yourself as the ghost explains that they were going to use the funeral to mark out members of Chicago's occult community they might have missed. Then they were to drive a few of them to suicide where it would not be too suspicious and start kidnapping families, specifically of prospective leaders in order to turn them into double agents to help kill their friends.

Apparently the original plan had been straightforward infiltration of the Order of the Cauldron, but that has been abandoned due to... you, specifically due to the fact that Athanasius Skavis thought you could mark him on sight for what he was. So he had taken precautions, including recruiting a mortal dupes who call themselves the Ants of the Lord in reference to something called Formicarius.

"That is a 15th century text on recognizing and investigating witchcraft," Lydia pipes up. "The ant metaphor is kind of pretentious to tell the truth Nider drops it almost as soon as he establishes it in favor of a kind of preacher's manual, remarkable in the breadth of the subjects it covers, though not in the depth. A lot of that stuff reads willfully sensational, like he is trying to get though to the laity, not to impress his views on other theologians. I think the Bern thing might be from there, one of the cases discussed is a couple from there where the man supposedly confessed and repented and was burned and the woman did neither and... was burned. Funny how that works." Her smile is sharp enough to draw blood, making the ghost recoil a little, though he soon calms down.

Unfortunately Demetrius does not know where House Skavis had found a bunch of genuine witch hunting fanatics to use at patsies, but he does know one other interesting thing which he had not been meant to hear by his master, but instead reached his ears from continuing the childhood habit of lingering near doors when he could. Athanasius Skavis means for you and maybe Harry as well to attack the Ants of the Lord, he has something prepared for that contingency.

He also has the addresses where these cultists, because that is what they are as much as the ones who follow the Denarians around no matter than they might claim communion with the Church and obedience to God, and their three vampire handlers are hanging out. It's an abandoned strip mall which you remember going to a rave at last year. Place has really gone downhill.

"Has this happened anywhere else? Is anyone else doing this?" you prompt prompt.

"No... no.. test... dangerous place to test I said but Athanasius he was starting here as part of an agreement with powerful allies. I think it must be the Red Court, they truly loath Dresden."

"Do you want us to carry a message to anyone?" Lydia asks when it seems like you had finished with your questioning.

"Tell Athanasius to BURN IN HELL!" The ghost's eye's turn black as pitch as trash starts whirling in a tempest all around ad the lid of the dumpster flies off with a screech of twisted metal.

Once it had rattled to a stop you turn to Detective Murphy: "Did you want to ask anything else?"

To her credit she keeps a professional calm as she puts away the notepad and pen.. "I think this about covers it."

The three of you leave the ghost bent over from the weight of his absent demons, real and metaphorical in the alley and drive off.

By majority decision, meaning you and Lydia you the three of you find a Burgher King to get some junk food and coke to wash down the horrible revelations that ghost had shared as you phone Lara from the car. The phone goes off five or six times before she answers, the dance music in the background making it clear why she had taken so long to answer. "What happened?"

"You have rats in your walls." So for the next half hour you go on to explain what you had found, who you had found and what they are doing, giving all the names you have and using the ghost as cover.

The more you talk the quieter Lara gets. One might be tempted to think she is scheming, each point of data added to some ever-expanding plan, in fact you think that is what she is trying to sound like, but yo your ears her rage is like static behind her every carefully formulated syllable, not so much at the Skavis whose treachery had been expected if not perhaps so soon, but at her own cousin. Now why would Lara Raith who is no stranger to plotting against family be taken so aback by this treachery?

"Do you remember when I asked you to come to a gathering of the court to confirm that you will not take that which is not offered?" the question draws you out of your mussing.

"Yes," you answer simply. Surely she isn't suggesting going to a party now with your friends in danger from her mad underlings?

"If you would consent to come to the Epulum Jovis on the Ides of November... that is the thirteenth of this month everyone you named will be present and stripped of their guards and resources, a chance to catch all the rats in one draw of the net. If you are otherwise engaged I of course understand, this is an internal matter of the White Court which will be handled by the time the sun dawns on Tuesday, this is simply a chance to join in while fulfilling previous commitments and..." she pauses delicately. "Impress the scope of your power on any others who might be tempted to test it."

What do you reply?

[] Agree, you will be there for the Feast of Jupiter
-[] Try to get other people invited (ex: Harry, Michael, Murphy etc...)

[] Refuse, you are going to deal with this in your own way
-[] Write in

OOC: Good thing Murphy has a high willpower and rolled well, hanging out with an Infernal and an Exigent of Death is... rather stressful to the average mortal.

Good thing is that Madrigal propably won't get a chance to fuck up thrice or however he did in canon.

His death now will be less of an emberassment to the family than his survival would have been.

Also the thing is going down in 3 days?
Lucky timing I guess.

[X] Agree, you will be there for the Feast of Jupiter
-[X] Try to get other people invited: Ask Lydia if she wants to come, no pressure and you propably don't need help this time, but she seemed kinda affected by the plan, so she might want in on this from her own volition.

I wonder how much thought Murphy is putting into convincing Lydia to do a little side work speaking to the ghosts of murder victims? I know she tries to be as 'by the books' as she can be in her situation, but seeing the kind of information Lydia's power can extract from the dead has to be very tempting for a detective.

I suppose this has been an educational night for Murphy, a sort of glimpse into the spookier stuff and dreadful might Dresden generally tries to shield regular mortals from, even heroic ones like Murphy.
