-[X] Earning the Order's trust was no small matter, so we won't risk damaging that by handing out their information without first learning whether they wish to share it. If they do, then we'll reach out and give Murphy the contact details for someone.

This is about agency.

You know what people got treated like they don't have any?

Mostly children and the mentally ill. As ill-defined as that term is.

Don't treat them like that.

Molly knows that's how her mother treats her and is the reason for most of their shouting matches before Molly got supernatural social skills.

I am not sure the combination of *staying within earshot* and telling her name is a good thing, even worse with the mention of Dr Jackson right after, that is fey level of *totally not giving their names , honest. While still doing it* there.

Either move out of earshot or don't use names, the current one is an even bigger breach of trust than just telling outright.
Ok, again, fair. changed to making sure Murphy can't hear you.

This said, I am absolutely for talking with the Order and convincing them to share the information with Murphy, I just do not want to do it either over their heads or by a phone conversation with just one person.

I get that it's a fictional world, but non-corrupt cops are still pretty unlikely.

Murphy talks about giving their calls priority, about acting on their information if they are threatened.

This needs their active and willing help, not merely teeth-clenched acceptance that someone else went over their head.
The way to get that is to convince them it's a good idea, not do shit "for their own good."
"These people aren't going to be able to stay holed out in their houses long term. If I had names for the 'self-defense' club I could put some people on alert, make sure calls are given priority, scare off any would be lunatics who fancy hunting witches if any of them are around. Conduct interviews..."

Do you have a way to guarantee that info stays with the non-corrupt cop? Its not so black and white.
They trusted us with information that could put their lives at risk-along with their friends and family. We shouldn't just give it out without consulting them all first.

We can probably cont on the relevant information being confined to precisely one cop, if need be: Murphy herself. But one cop also isn't providing much support.

Of Trust and Testimony
Hmm.

Murphy herself has been the victim of Lord Raith's psychic whammy in Blood Rites. The Nightmare walked into her office and mindfucked her in Grave Peril; she was unconscious for two days. She saw the Loup Garou wreck a station and kill her then-partner in Fool Moon. And she saw the results of one of her men Malone getting cursed and mindfucked in Grave Peril.

A little presumptuous to assume that she can keep personal data safe from a directed kill campaign, especially if these are names and phone numbers she has to spread around her unit and the 911 dispatchers.

Furthermore, Murphy is a cop.
She takes orders from her superiors and suggestions from her patrons. Her juniors also take orders. And none of them have any protection against mindreading or other suasion, or even just mundane pressure like a superior, or Internal Affairs, demanding they talk.

Before handing what's essentially a membership list of a significant fraction of Chicago's practicing organized lesser talents, best to ask them first. Because that can very easily become a target list.

Murphy is a cop, it is her job to protect and serve, it is her calling and one of her intimacies, furthermore she is the head of SI so it is her job and calling to help against things that go bump in the night. She pretty much has to work under the assumption that she is competent to do those things and can make herself more competent or she would have to quit her job

On the whole "they might get targeted if we give their names to the cops" - they have already been targeted. A vampire would-be assassin has attacked one of the Order's members, and has clearly stalked her for quite some time, since he knew about the letters. The probability that he only knew about dr. Jackson is minuscule. The membership list of the Order has to be considered fully compromised by at least White Court.

Bad guys already know who order members are, and people like LoC could find out relatively trivially. GIving the information to good cops doesn't noticeably change the security of that information at all. If anyone thinks that Rose of Autumn's account hasn't been tracked by Daedalus or their like already, they are painfully naive.

The only reason not to give the information right now is the breach of trust, and the possibility of souring relationships, not any security concern.

The entire Chicago Police Department is around 11,700 sworn officers as of 2022. SI is not going to be more than 100 officers in total; given its reputation and characterization, I'd point at around 50 officers or less.

Murphy is one officer.

Whether or not it's actually true.
We have to take that into account when talking to her.

That said, canon Dresden had broken her of that thinking by 2007's White Night. It's possible her demotion in canon after Proven Guilty helped hammer the facts of the setting home.

Of course, here she hasn't been demoted.
And the Library made contact. So she's in a psychologically different place.
Not necessarily more realistic, but more confident.

If you are worried about that then we can offer to put a cyber d in her phone. It can keep an eye on her let us know if she is being put under any mind whammy. In fact it can also let her know if she has been put under any mind whammy.
