Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Stunt Trial Balloon:

"Is the Library of Congress an Unseelie Accords Signatory?"
[If Murphy is ignorant]
"They're the supernatural equivalent of the Geneva Conventions. We're dealing with the kinds of people who would consider chapter 3 to be a completely reasonable approach to govern interacting with mortal authorities. Mortal authorities in the know are considered retainers of whatever signatory is influencing them and informally like nukes. Supernaturally ignorant mortal authorities are considered a battlefield hazard.

My point is that while I don't mind keeping my promise here, if things go south they have the potential to go farther south so we need to be careful."

@Aeondrac @Goldfish please be aware I was convinced, and am switching to

[X] BronzeTongue

I do want to propose that we spend an AP, probably next turn, to establish a contact between SI and local minor talent community. In fact, next turn could be Cauldron heavy - we need to handle Olivia's ancestry (remember, we promised her training, and, if she still wants to, Inner Devils Unchained fomori transformation by Christmas, meaning we have to handle the block on her magic next turn), we'll probably need to handle the fallout from this event, etc. So, devoting three to four AP to Cauldron-related stuff (Olivia, Helen, setting up connections with SI, internet presence, maybe putting Rosie in contact with them) might be a good idea. It would also lead to a faster turn, as those events would naturally follow from one another.
Why would we expect her to do anything? We promised to keep her informed. That doesn't mean we need her interference.
Because we can't reasonably expect her to sit by and do nothing at all as people, who are USA citizens (both the whampire and dr. Jackson are, essentially, mortals with a bit of power added on) kill each other.

Yeah, this event just kicked off some of the major stuff I was tracking for an Ordo turn.

I'm thinking follow up on this situation (including better equipment and selling them on working with SI), better community communication, and stuff like that.

Olivia training is lower priority since she's just one person. Also, we didn't promise her IDU; there was explicitly an option for that and we didn't vote for it.

How did people put it? *Creating paranet early*? I honestly can't remember the name of the small talents website.

Maybe, finally meet the alphas and network them with the Ordo?

A turn of social networking and exploring our kingdom (I hope) sounds nice.

We did, actually. The options were
[] Make the offer (Must take Inner Devils Unchained Cost 12 XP)

[] Say goodbye
We chose:
[] Say goodbye
-[] Offer training and equipment instead
-[] STUNT: "Believe me. I know the feeling. I really do. I grew up with it, even. I won't provide a magical immediate solution right now, not when you are so angry and not thinking clearly. What I will provide, however, are the means. I'll talk to some people, arrange training in how to fight, provide equipment if you want it. And if, by Christmas, you still want to keep fighting, we'll discuss the topic again. I might have something by that time".
We promised her training and equipment, and a chance to abandon her humanity, if she still wanted to, at Christmas. Essentially "don't make a rushed decision, let's consider alternatives first, but, if after actual training, you are still committed, we'll help you".

Not an explicit promise of IDU. But the promise of support does include helping with her magic, and that requires contacting her ancestor.

She's a potential circle member. And a stealth specialist. We could use her.

I won't deny that we voted to help her, but you keep taking about it like we committed to giving her a specific solution when we didn't and effectively voted the opposite direction.

[X] Reassure her that you will deal with this
-[X] Call Helen and ask her to let Jackson stay there for at least the weekend while we work on the problem. Stop by Jackson's place to pick anything -or anyone - that she needs with her for that period.
-[X] Have the other cyber devil car meet us there so we don't have a body in the trunk of the car we meet Murphy in. Have Black Rider follow at a discrete distance.
-[X] While there ask her to collect the letters and any other evidence she might have.
    -[X] Explanation for Murphy:
—[X] Give the basic details of the encounter, but avoid mentioning the name of the victim or the final condition of the body.
—[X] Explain Molly's involvement with the Ordo, and the understanding she recently reached with the white court.
—[X] Cover the plan to cull the minor talents of the city, and the potential for more violence.
—[X] Lay out the plan to reach out to Lara and get the people responsible muzzled before this gets out of hand.
—[X] Attempt to outline the perspective of the supernatural on mundane authorities, and the potential for this escalating from a splinter faction to something more dangerous if we misstep.
    -[X] Crown questions:
--[X] Dr Jackson's torn labcoat: "what are the identities of everyone involved in the attack / kidnapping attempt of this coat's owner?"
---[X] Give the identities to Clippy to run down
---[X] If the identity of one of the people involved matches the identity of the old highschool photo, use it to ask "what has the person in this photo done in the last year and a day, starting from the latest action and going backwards?"
---[X] If it doesn't match, use the whampire's wallet to find their identity
-[X] [Stunt]: Outlining the plot into the silence of the car, Molly meets Murphy's eyes as a deeper sort of seriousness begins to sink into her voice.
—[X] "The people we're dealing with here don't give a damn about mortal law. Some of them are older than this country and barely care to acknowledge that it's here at all." Gesturing to the city around them Molly continues.
--[X] " They do know how to count though, and they don't like how some of them add up. Mortal authorities are in the unenviable situation of being simultaneously threatening but almost impossible for the supernatural powers to really respect."
--[X] Turning back to Murphy, her voice doesn't seem to carry so much as carve it's way through the air with unshakable certainty "We have to be very careful. Push in the right place and we roll this up before anyone else gets hurt. Push in the wrong one or the wrong way and this gets bigger. Bloodier"
[X] Stick together for now, she no doubt has decent wards, but you are better protection than any ward could ever be.
-[X] Empathy excellency to reassure and calm her down to get her past the stress of nearly losing her life and killing a person
-[X] Warn her that she'll probably need to talk not just to police but to other forces involved. If she's not up to that, you'll drop her off somewhere safe after you talk to lieutenant Murphy. Somewhere with company, she shouldn't stay alone right now.
-[X] Write in how you present your findings so far to Detective Murphy: As an ongoing event that has a strong chance of developing into a political incident on multiple fronts, involving supernatural superpowers.

There are different solution, but she explicitely asked for help with her magic. We identified the problem - the magic was twisted by her divine ancestor at the behest of her mother's prayer as a way to ensure her safety. We haven't solved the problem yet. We can either exalted BS it (VEE? training charm?), turn her into a fomori (IDU as the most logical path here), or otherwise elevate her past being human, we can lean into super-charged stealth thing she has, and equip her with additional equipment and make her a ninja, or we can untwist it (one of the way to do so is contacting her divine ancestor). There are probably other ways to solve the situation too, but I am actually interested in the "contact divine ancestor" solution. It sounds fun.

Oops...

It doesn't really make a difference at this point, but when I voted for BronzeTongue, I didn't realize he was also approval voting the other option. My bad.

Arc 8 Post 7: A Tangle of Traitors
A Tangle of Traitors

9th of November 2006 A.D.

Mind racing from one option to the other, what do do about DetectiveMurphy, the body, Lara... and the fact that your mother is going to start calling soon you settle on: "Do you wan me to drop you off at Helen's?" Seeing her bemused expression in the mirror you explain. "Helen Beckitt? She has good wards I helped with them."

A shake of her head almost dislodges a hair-pin. "I live with my family above the clinic. We have... a strong threshold, strengthened as well." She pulls helplessly at the ruined collar of her labcoat. "I can't leave you out here to deal with that."

If you can't even call it a body you really should, you think with sympathy not any kind of accusation. "I've dealt with the lieutenant before and with this kind of thing..." Catching yourself you add quickly: "Times when the law of the land hints straight on into the the world behind the curtain." Don't want her to think I make a habit of driving around with bodies in my trunk.

Thankfully it does not seem she does. Your arguments are straightforward reasonable and all the more persuasive for agreeing with what she wants right now, a way out of the car and back to the comfort of familiar things.

After dropping her off in front of a turn of the century redbrick building with a slightly crooked sign above the door, but light still burning clear in the windows you repeat the warning you had sent off to the rest of Cauldron and are about to bid goodbye when Will, not Clippy chines in:

"Letters relevant to investigation, superfluous to ally designated Eve Jackson. Obtain?"

"Could you get me those letters, I might be able to use them to track the sender."

She shakes her head. Thought about that. "They are all magazine clippings and I think whoever's behind this wore gloves."

"I can still use them." As one might expect she looks impressed and a little daunted, tracking is notoriously difficult using things of little contact and less emotional import. Good thing for her peace of mind she does not know just how good you are.

After about ten minutes of looking she comes out of the house a curly haired boy, five or six wearing Lilo and Stitch PJs practically clinging to her legs. Kids know when you're scared, you remember that much crystal clear from those times when mom would stay up to three, four o'clock in the morning waiting for a phone call from dad. Sometimes you would sneak up to the door, with a glass of water in hand pretending that was why you were up in case she noticed you. You'd figured out that dad did something more dangerous than carpentry when he was out of town years before the word 'denarius' was in your vocabulary. Hopefully little Liam, as he introduces himself, won't have to.

"Bye!" you wave even as your eyes fix on the torn labcoat and your mind pressed the question into the world all the harder: What are the identities of everyone involved in the attack of this coat's owner?

Nine names are spit out by the gears of some cosmic mechanism to which for some reason you have the secret key. One of those names is not new, Madrigal Raith, the same one who wanted Sarah Grene silenced, but of the rest Athanasius Skavis stands out as one of the triad of major White Court Houses.

That said you do not know how deep this gets until you feed the information to your friends on the digital side, using not just the internet, but the files you had stolen off Lara's agent at the police auction. Athanasius Skavis is heir presumptive to House Skavis. Of the remaining seven five were identified as associates of House Skavis, either vampire or ghoul.

As you pull up behind the Seven Eleven, the parking lot all but deserted other than Murphy in her personal car, you are happy to see you wonder what it's safe to tell her about the whole thing.

What do you tell Murphy?

[] Only talk about the attack and the body, this risks her digging deeper on her own, but if Lara moves fast she might be able to handle everything before the detective has any leads worth a damn

[] Mention that you have a connection to the highest levels of the White Court and your plan to reach out to Lara so that she can deal with the rogue elements

[] Write in

OOC: I tried to take some of the stuff from the runner up vote, like asking the question with the labcoat as focus since it only costs a mote of essence and getting the letters in case you want to use more, but I did not want to push on to talking to Murphy since that part certainly was not voted in.

There's about to be a civil war / purge happening among the White Court in the city. The closest equivalent is a mafia war. As a police officer, Murphy absolutely deserves and needs to know that. Because there will be bodies, and there will be collateral damage.

Hey @uju32 are you still gonna make a hell? If so I recommend to do it soon if you are if you want proper discussion, fixing possible mistakes, backstory, filling in species, making lore, etc etc. Time for people to get an opinion especially.

Yeah though I expect for them to at least try to keep collateral low its not like any side actually wants the attention and a lot of white court is good at subtle.

White Court has mortal servants, and I expect those to be involved as well. Leaving aside how younger vampires are, as far as the system goes, actual real people, fully integrated into USA governemnt oversight, the human servants are also likely to die.

well yeah thats not really collateral mind you. Like I'm not gonna make a difference between servants and minions here anymore than I would for marcone goons. Like morally a lot of them probably don't deserve to be in their position but I'm not gonna classify them as bystanders at the point where they are actively serving white court.

I can totally feel bad for them and even try to minimize casualties though. Oh also not disagreeing with you on bystander casualties they will happen I'm just saying some are incentivized to make said casualties lower than they could be or well less noticeable. Their still gonna happen here.
