Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Her Third Eye, a Portent Of Her Power, emerges violently into the Mundane splitting open from Her forehead vertically, made of Obsidian and Emerald— The Unblinking Infernal Eye glows gently with a strange fel light, her hair grows long, color fading away into a snowstorm white, before coming to life under the will of The Empress To Be— all the while,
This is less off brand Denarian than exactly the sort of thing they do. One of the only consistent features they have in monster form is the angel's eyes on the forehead.

That association is going to get really old really quick even without us leaning into it as hard as possible.

To tell you how I got there, the third eye manifested, in Hindu mythology and faith symbolizes the locus of occult power and wisdom, and like…our Crown is Eyes. Occult Wisdom is our Deal, Manifesting a carved jewel that looks like/is an eye and does cool glowing was what I could think of here that didn't edge too far into the Coin Boyz whole energy. Those eyes are hellfire, if I remember my reading, a pair that sit directly above the brow, for every single one of them.

Now, I can understand where you're coming from. It is a bit shit that Coino And The Puppet Show are stealing our whole eye thing and it makes us look bad

But I don't know what to tell you, We picked the literal crown of burning eyes right at the start, there's no escaping the eyeball thing my friend, gotta show up somewhere or what's the point of explicitly having an eyeball thing? Ignoring it [Clarifying Edit: The Thematic Ascetics of Our Exaltation] because it's inconvenient and makes us look bad feels disingenuous, in my opinion. we are already playing a Creature of Darkness, metaphorically powered by a infernal nuclear reactor merged to our soul.

We're already screaming "demonically empowered" who knows how to look for it, nobody will treat us like we have a good reputation until we Earn a Good Rep in the Mystical Side of things. Going to Gramps The Magic Hitman for a check up is part of that. Ideally, by the time we actually earn our Shintai, the people in the know will know what we aren't, and what we are, at least locally, which is my primary concern.

The issue being that Molly actually is educated on Denarians, not informed at all about Hinduism outside of demonically granted Occult and her own canonical choice of Japanese for incantations suggests she's more likely to cosplay Queen Beryl.

That's true! However, the only Yokai I could think of with an Eyeball thing was Hyakume and no offence to them, but they literal lumps of flesh with eyes and nothing else, so not really Molly Energy, and the Dodomeki a Lady Yokai who has eyes all over her arms, which is very cool but I wasn't feeling it at the time of the write up. I'm happy to take suggestions as to a replacement eyeball thing, but I refuse to ignore the fact we explictly chose to have an eyeball themed thing right from the get go.

Queen Beryl actually does have a fancy jeweled crown with a single big fancy stone right where a third eye would be. A Cat's Eye style crystal adorning a crown in the same style would get that eyeball imagery without it being actual eyeballs, and it being part of a crown rather than a mutation or something would get across the part where our eyeball crown is also literally a crown, and not us being possessed.

(Edit: To be clear, I mean explicitly a jeweled crown as an adornment, not something popping out of our head.)

@uju32 the reason the loss of appearance has not caused more trouble than it did is because she also gained even more than she lost in Charisma and Manipulation, as long as she can talk to people she is actually more able to sway them and that is before she breaks out the magic powers. Teenagers care about image a lot, but that is a broad social standing thing and not just that the game puts under the umbrella of appearance.
Oh, I understand the logical reasoning for it.

I just had my doubts about whether its would have mattered, especially given how much at that age is driven by feeling instead of logic. We are talking about the girl who had her ex(who she does care about) sleep with her friend, and who is crushing on her father's friend and work associate.

It's not true normally.

At present, however, some considerable portion of the White Council is still in Chicago, Senior Council members and Wardens included. There's a war on, some weird shit just went down in Arctis Tor, and the Blackstaff might have just shared information that could be interpreted as there being some sort of spiritual parasite going around grafting itself to the souls of practitioners (this is admittedly a poor interpretation of the facts, but the Telephone Game and office politics are alive and well).

With all of that in mind, it would not be a surprise, assuming Ebeneezer narced on us, for there to be multiple Wardens sent to deal with us. I don't think that is very likely, but I've got the benefit of meta knowledge, whereas Molly is a 17-year old kid with too little information and a healthy dose of existential dread.
1)No, thats inaccurate.

There were maybe a dozen Wardens and only two Senior Council members(the Merlin and the Gatekeeper) available in Chicago for Molly's trial in canon, and they only came there because Dresden called a Conclave as regional Warden commander, pulling them from elswhere.
Proven Guilty said:
The Merlin regarded this positioning for a moment, eyes narrowed, and then addressed the room, in Latin. "Wardens, close the circle. Warden Dresden, please step forward and introduce us to your guests."

I gave Molly's hand a squeeze of reassurance, then let go of her and stepped forward. "First thing," I said, looking around at the dozen or so Wardens present, plus a few other noncombatant Council members who had been in the area or who were on the Senior Council's staff. "Is there anyone here who doesn't understand English?"

The Merlin folded his arms, a slight smile curling his lips. "Council meetings are conducted in Latin."
Thats why the Merlin held the proxy votes for five of the seven seats on the jury.

Everyone else, Ebenezer, Listens to Wind, Liberty, the evacuee students, their escorts, Michael?
All showed up later in an emergency evacuation via the Ways. The whole plot of Proven Guilty with the fetches and all wouldnt have happened if there had been a force of wardens on standby in the city.

2) The Blackstaff is the Senior Council's hitman, not their intelligence specialist.
Esoteric intelligence is the province of Rashid ie the Gatekeepeer.

3)The White Council has laws about how their Wardens can use magic.
If they rule that Molls is human, they cant use magic to kill her. If they rule that she is not human, she cant be prosecuted under the Laws of Magic.

4)The White Council has no Laws against consensual possession and thus would not care.
If you read the early books, you'll note that Harry was literally calling up Chaunzaggaroth the demon from Hell for information, describes him as a popular source for wizards, and that was apparently legal by White Council standards as taught to him.

And he didnt stop until he figured out that dude was trying to screw him.

5) The Council is well used to the idea of part-human/posthuman entities with magic that are beyond their jurisdiction.
There's the semimortal shapeshifter magic dude in Ukraine that sounds like a Lunar, there are people like Goodman Grey, there are changelings all over the place.
I understand what you're saying and I want you to understand that I kinda don't give a shit because big monsters are fucking cool and is there an actual masquerade that will be enforced upon us?
When the tigers broke free would be a pretty useful charm especially since it's only 2 dots(I didn't realise it was so cheap).
Also didn't realise it was named after a Pink Floyd song.
1)A lot of people and factions enjoy the benefits of the masquerade, and would be lethally pissed at us for compromising it.
And we are certainly not big enough to avoid getting slapped down.Hard.

The Denarians have been locked in coins for two thousand years for fucking around and finding out.
The Black Court got genocided when they threw around too much weight. The Dragon Siriothrax fucked around and got shanked. The Summer Lady fucked around and got shanked. The Old Ones(think Lovecraft) fucked around and got fucked.

Ak our coadjutor how long this Exaltation has spent locked in a box in Winter.

Its worth considering why, despite the fact that the White Council and Red Court have been in full blown world war for several years, the Red Court is reluctant to take overt action out where it can be witnessed and recorded.
Its not like they dont know where White Council HQ is.

Consequences happen to everyone my dude.

2)There is also Not Being An Asshole.

It wasnt that long ago that normals were still burning wizards and witches at the stake. Most of the people we care about are not as tanky as we are, and even randos will have opinions if you kick off a new set of global witch hunts for everything supernatural for no further reason besides arrogance.

3)Coolness =/=utility
There are actual Dragons in the setting; at least two are still alive. They walk around in human form. Mab walks around in human form, as does Titania. The Lords of the Outer Night go to war in human form. There's a reason for it.

Never it let it be said I can't take notes! :p The Queen In Rags now reads as below:

"Activating the Shintai, Molly's Burning Crown Of Eyes alights— casting impossible shadows all about her. She plants her sword before herself as her body transforms— A Crown of Brass and Vantablack Ice grows itself out of the Emerald and Obsidian Gem that lays inset upon the The Infernal's Brow, Her Third Eye Manifested in the Mundane, a portent of Her Power— The Unblinking Infernal Gem glows gently with a strange fel-light..."

Yeah, Molly is big on crystal foci compared to Harry's very traditional Staff and Blasting Rod. She uses mangled Japanese for incantations vs Harry's mangled Latin. Her mindscape is a Star Trek bridge commanding a modern city.

And her father regularly comes home injured from fighting demonic beings.

If she has a controlling say on what her Shintai looks like I expect more pop culture and media references than mythological

The mangled Latin is from his first teacher, as wizards cannot casually speak the language they use for magic. And Latin is the language the WC uses to speak to each other. The bad Latin was deliberate sabotage.

I think it's more that Molly didn't emotionally feel a big change, after all it's not like she got uglier, she just became/feeling scarier. While the strangers at school have given her space, she still talks to her friends in a normal way, no teacher has specifically caught her attention for nothing (apart from the instance with P.E.), no one is spreading nasty rumors about her etc (this is all from what I've noticed in her narration)

So, for me, the situation is quite reasonable.

Size, Geography, & Climate: Huge (-2 pt.), Difficult Terrain, Harsh Wilderness

* Almadelmundo takes the form of a large archipelago. The Soul-Realm is surrounded by pitch-black seas and a ring of solid ice, preventing sailors from crossing the border without a long trek on foot through haunted, lightless wastes. The sky is black and starless, with the occasional aurora created by the flow of magic. Nonetheless, the seas somehow reflect a field of bright, unseen stars.

* There is no sun, but a single moon that's almost as bright, passing through all of the lunar phases on a regular day-night cycle. It appears to be directly above the centre of the Blessed Isle.

* The Blessed Isle is the central, largest, and most hospitable island. In the Bordermarches, the light of the moon grows dim, the climate is colder, and the wilderness becomes ever more dangerous.

Population: Balanced Ecosystem, Human Populace, Resident Devils (-1 pt.), Deadly Beasts (-1 pt.), Deadly Flora (+1 pt.)

* The Soul-Realm is full of fantastical creatures, as beautiful and deadly as anything to be found in Faerie. Settlements are under constant threat from monsters and dark spirits (like killer scarecrows!), which constantly emerge from ancient barrows and ruins, from beneath the sea, and from the outer night beyond the ice wall. Other spirits are benevolent guardians that cooperate with humans.

* According to native historians, Almadelmundo was built on the ruins of the ancient Ebon Kingdom, and its remnants can be found scattered throughout the archipelago - in these Darkened Places, the true, infernal nature of the Realm is revealed.

Social Structures: Modern (City States) or Archaic

Technology: Archaic (Early Modern)

Loyalty: Indifferent

* For some reason, most magical talents are women who manifest their abilities dramatically at a young age. Those who graduate from the Citadel become Sentinels, tasked with defending the Realm against the monsters constantly besieging it, and adopt a spirit companion that complements their abilities, thematics, and personality.

* The Blessed Isle is dotted with city-states equipped with sailing ships, quality steel, and early firearms. The Sentinels try to keep peace between the Princes who rule them, though nonetheless they squabble and feud.

* Most settlements in the Bordermarches are fortified or well-hidden and have a lower level of social and technological development, due to the constant threat of attack by dark spirits.

* The Demon Empress has not yet revealed herself and may treat with the good and wicked creatures of the Realm in any guise that she pleases.

Features: Grand Grimoire (-1 pt.), Endless Suffering (-1 pt.)

* Magic is so thick in the air within the Kingdom that it flows like auroral rivers in the sky - fed by the tides of the elements, the waxing and waning of the moon, and the wishes and prayers of the living, each a separate colour in the boreal rainbow.

* The Citadel is the grand magical academy at the centre of the Blessed Isle, stocked with all the arcane tomes, ritual spaces, and reagents anyone might need. Many smaller academies and shrines exist throughout, while Darkened Places have their own troves of censured and forbidden lore for those brave or foolish enough to look. That is, the Realm is an ideal place to learn or practice almost any kind of magical art.

* All mortal creatures of the Kingdom bear a Soulgem that can be used to commune with the owner's spirit and even resurrect them from the dead. These may be lost or stolen (and monsters will generally do their best to do so), but are very difficult to destroy. A Soulgem can also be used as a magical focus. However, if the bearer dies from old age or chooses to forfeit their life, the Soulgem will crumble to dust in due time as the spirit passes on.

Designing Hells is one of the things we do in this thread, right? This is the fantasy or vaguely magical girl-themed draft. I came up with the preliminary name meaning 'world-soul' or 'soul-of-the-world' for this soul-world design, because I am very creative and good at naming things and not getting things backwards. I tried not to be too cruel to the inhabitants other than having them constantly besieged by monsters, but if it's still too bland, well maybe it could be made spicier.

I'm also mulling over the idea of something like a futuristic city-sized space station or starship floating in an endless starry skybox.

This.

For example, I expect her to pick up Flight eventually, because everyone who gets magic apparently tries(Dresden tried both a flying carpet and a flying broom iirc) but wings? In a 17 year old with tattoos and piercings who has grown up in modern society with modern media?

2 years after Pixar's The Incredibles would have been released according to the timeline?
2 years after Samurai Jack?
That seems....entirely at odds with how media works.

The mangled Latin is from his first teacher, as wizards cannot casually speak the language they use for magic. And Latin is the language the WC uses to speak to each other. The bad Latin was deliberate sabotage.
I dont believe this is true, as I can find no citation for it.

DuMorne was raising Dresden and Elaine as his personal hatchetmen and oathbound tools.
Their performance would reflect on him personally and professionally. He had no reason to sabotage Harry's education or hers.
And the person who finished teaching him was his grandfather, who also had no reason to not teach him Latin.

Harry Dresden was just bad at a lot of elements of formal education.
And sometimes didnt receive proper instruction, to be fair. Correspondence courses do not work for everyone.
I think it's more that Molly didn't emotionally feel a big change, after all it's not like she got uglier, she just became/feeling scarier. 2) He's also a several centuries old wizard who has had access to Council archives for decades, at least, but likely centuries. Just because he doesn't specialize in forbidden lore doesn't mean he doesn't know some scary shit.

3) Magic can be used to incapacitate without breaking any Laws. After that, killing the muggle way is easy.

We don't need to ignore the eye theme, hell one of the ideas I proposed was basically all about being a giant eye.

That doesn't mean we should just pick looks without regard to what they imply. Effectively none of the information you're trying to convey will actually make it to anyone in character because for the last two thousand years the Denarians have used this particular branding.

Trying to compete with them for this space in people's heads is like a store brand cola ripping off Coke's look and then pretending that's not what they're doing.

It doesn't matter whose product is better, Coke was there first and had claimed the association. If we want our brand to be seen as different, we should distinguish ourselves where we can.

We can be demonic without being diabolic if you take my meaning.

With that in mind there are all kinds of things we could do that play the theme without looking like a derivative rip off.

- Make Molly's eyes into burning orbs of green fire (barely any different, but it's something at least)

- replace her eyes with a burning cyclopian eye of terror

- give her green flame hair a la Disney Hades and have flickering images of an eye form in it.

- have her weep fat sparks of emerald flame on which slitted pupils dilate into existence as they fall upwards. From there either have them form an ever shifting constellation, or make the weeping persistent and have the "eyes" flicker out as they form.

For bonus points turn her physical eyes into bottomless pits, possibly with hints of obsidian teeth in their depths.

- completely remove all of her facial features other than a fanged mouth and have countless images of eyes sear themselves into any surfaces within five feet of her as she moves. Each of which would act as her source of vision in place of her true eyes so long as she stayed in range.

If she has no valid targets nearby they sear themselves into the air as quickly fading embers or into her flesh as wounds that heal as they form.

- all exposed skin bubbles with eyes like some freakish boiling water.

- comical blazing eye shoulder pads that look like they were stolen from a space marine's armor.
Or any number of other freaky options that fit being humanoid without looking like we play for their team.

Edit: I particularly enjoy option four with fading sparks and fanged pits. Because you could simultaneously make it look like she's weeping flaming eyes and that they're frothing venom boiling off of the teeth in the endless maws where her eyes used to be.

Which is a fun visual metaphor for how we can use them and hunger of our urge.

Edit2: typo

I realise that this is like the gems in PMMM but less shittier but my first though when I read it was Aeldari Spirit Stones from WH40k

Also just read this and now I'm wondering whether you're trying to make a Craftworld

1)They arent here right now.
They only show up for the trial and leave shortly after. Less than 24 hours. Possibly less than 12 hours.
There's a war on, and noone wants to give the Reds a juicy target to hit.

2)Dresden has to call them to judge Molly, and was obliged to do so because the Gatekeeper personally wrote him a letter to look for black magic in Chicago.
Until he does so, they arent here.

3)The White Council, to my recollection, numbers in the thousands of wizards globally. The Wardens in the low hundreds.
12 is not a significant number of wizards; it would be a significant number of Wardens, if they were here on anything more than a short, hours long visit .

4)Still not McCoy's specialty.
There's a reason he's the Blackstaff and not the Gatekeeper.
These rap magic skills are not evenly distributed.

5)Not particularly well.
Not against another proper wizard, instead of just a self-taught warlock .
And an Exalt that favors Occult is much more than a rando spellworker.

Molls has immunity to cold damage, a wound penalty negator, a clinch breaker, and a general excellency.
Even if she has lost the ability to cast the veils she used to be able to? When I say that Molly is a scarier personal combat threat than Dresden currently is, Im not kidding. She cant burn houses down wholesale, but she can stab a lotta people to death.

Literally all thats needed to round out her loadout is to buy or steal a Desert Eagle or large-caliber Glock for offhand use.
Kincaid permakilled a bunch of Denarians with less.

We don't need to ignore the eye theme, he'll one of the ideas I proposed was basically all about being a giant eye.
^^^
If we are bent on having an eye motif somewhere, there are lots of ways to implement it without ripping off the Denarians schtick.
From overt to subtle.

And its worth remembering that this punk/goth teenager is a Catholic-raised kid whose father is a literal paladin of God. Who knows about the things that go bump in the night. If she has any say at all about how she looks as her power evolves, she will not look like the things that her father and crush battle, or the ones that kidnapped her.

Sorry to keep going on about this, but I had a thought on a possible devil tyrant based on my last post I wanted to inflict on share with the thread.

Upon activating her shintai, the devil tyrant's pupils dilate, then seem to deepen into bottomless wells.

For a moment she stills, before the sockets of her eyes seem to slam closed as countless shards of volcanic glass grow inwards like teeth. With a shudder unsettlingly like a gulp, the remains of her physical eyes seem to drain away into the new maws on her face.

An oily black substance drips along her new fangs, occasionally igniting into brief flickers of sickly light as individual drops fall of jagged teeth. Revealing little more than the seemingly infinite depths of her new mouths.

Near the edges of her once eyes this substance forms steady tears. When they fall onto her face they flash with green fire and fall upward like sparks off a campfire.

As they drift, each ember forms a perfect black slit like pupil, briefly becoming an eye through which the infernal may see.

In a fraction of a second the infernal has formed a cloud that shrouds her head like a veil, even as individual motes wink out and are replaced by new sparks.

A film of frost grows across the rest of her body, giving her an unsettling rigidity and the parlor of a marble statue.

Though the level of lighting stays constant, all darkness save the shadow of the infernal herself seems to waver in her presence, subtly bending away from her gaze.

The name coming from her complicated relationship with the truth in multiple contexts.

This whole thing seems pretty excessive to me but it was fun to write, even if it was mostly inspired by the body horror of having someone's eye sockets grow teeth and eat their contents.

I still kind of like giant monster mode though.

For the purposes of constructive criticism; is this close to how infernal fluff is supposed to look, or was I really off base?

Also, how playable is the aspect spread I picked? High perception + a speed boost + some tank boosts seems like a decently nasty combo, but I'm not that familiar with the system.

This is a nice hell!

Usually when a setting keeps everything vaguely human-sized and humanish-looking I'm assuming budget-issues in the vein of most fantasy- and Sci-Fi-series on TV.

If it happens in a book series I can only assume the writer is unintentionally or intentionally leaning into similar tones.

Because if you can go big, you absolutly always should do it.
