Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

Hmm, maybe we should modifies our scabbard to make certain sounds when the katana is being pulled out. Everyone will find it to be natural and less likely to suspect technique being used.

The way Daisuke has been portrayed so far regarding the fan and the sword I doubt he would start messing with either of them.

Just let him wear an inconspicuous ring on his off-hand to generate the sound at the desired moment.

Unlike the fan it would be just a tool that can be replaced. The ring would leave one hand free and wouldn't look out of place.

Drawing a sword should not make a sound unless it's faulty or deliberate. Both things that should be avoided as a shinobi.

I do agree that exposing the (probably civilian-make) fan to pitched combat will probably make it fall apart at some point; it's better to avoid unduly stressing such a treasured object.

Maybe we can learn to emit the genjutsu by a kiai once we've reached mastery? It would be pretty cool to cast the genjutsu by shouting at people.

If Daisuke is consciously aware of the achievement list he could probably search for the Memorial Stone.

I have a dream of him using the daisho combination, and just being a samurai who happens to also be a ninja

I have some thoughts about tone of discord.

We use a katana which is normally a two-handed weapon, therefore we are limiting our self with the use of the fan. We are not using a ninjato or wakizashi. A katana can be used one-handed, but should primarily be used two-handed. It gives more power to our swings and most kenjutsu styles utilizing the katana would be two-handed.

Using our mothers fan in combat is also not a good idea, it would most likely break after a while, we should really only use it in social settings. We would need to get a combat fan, which has more negatives than positives.

With the possibility of having a free hand for short periods, we could learn to use one-handed seals, therefore making us able to use our sword one-handed while we use ninjutsu and genjutsu.

Regarding the technique itself: I recommend that we get the technique up to a level were we can change it to using a bell tied to our headband or hair instead, or to get a ring to replace the fan. It is also more efficient to use a bell, since it can be used immediately after the hand seals. We wouldn't have to draw our weapons afterwards.

If we learn to use the genjutsu without hand seals we could use it while we're fighting with kenjutsu, in the middle of a swing for example. Lastly using a bell will not limit our kenjutsu by forcing us to fight one-handed or forcing us to draw the fan and equip right after.

I believe that the fan limits our combat ability to a very large degree.

Buddy, we just invented the technique. Give us some time to work out the kinks to it. Regarding using a bell instead. No. That defeats the entire point of the technique where hitting certain points of the sword produces certain tones that cause different effects (i.e. blindness, vertigo, etc.). A bell doesn't do that. Let us wait and see how it upgrades before we start talking about changing the technique entirely.

Most samurai didn't actually use both daisho swords, right? I think Musashi was an exception to the norm. The smaller one was pretty much for swag + if they got ambushed while taking a shit.

"Territory: Marked!" though... could we really do something so crass? There are a bunch of ninja and ninken in Konoha that could easily tell it was us... Ninja like Kiba who would know what we did, as well as when and where... Do we really wanna give them that to hold over our heads? Just for an achievement?

...Granted, I'm pretty sure it'll do something like decrease Bathroom Motive build-up speed, which is kinda useful, but damn is it gonna be hard to pull off without getting caught or found out...
Isn't it possible to do this when we're outside Leaf on C-rank travel missions? We have to answer the call of nature in a bunch of many different places out there by necessity; I think this one will come on its own after a decent number of travel missions are done.

Ringlets and Replacements by Taka (canon)
@Vesvius

Right. Both of these got away from me. It's dumb but I wanted to see if it could at least maybe help.

She hated this. Hated it hated it hated it hated it all!

Why her? Always her?! She didn't bother with anyone, or anything for that matter! She followed all the stupid rules and etiquette and practices! She even followed that dumb thing that made her legs numb when sitting down! And she wanted to cry. She wanted to cry so bad but that would ruin her make up. Ruin her image in front of everyone else.

That's all she was. Another prop. Another trophy. Something to show off to everyone. No one really talked to her. They liked to speak. To compliment. To say a lot of empty promises at her. No, never to her. She would rather be somewhere else. Anywhere else. She'd exchange places with the ickiest bugs if it meant she get away from all of this.

She'd stare off to space. A placid smile frozen on her face. Like a puppet with strings, she'd offer the guests tea. Perform an instrument. Sing. She had expected this to continue. To escalate even further. Because what else was there to life? No, this was her place. This was what she was. She would be the perfect doll. Ever noble. Ever polite. Ever unmoved.

Truly, even the shift to the Academy did not phase her. Of course she had to be enrolled there. How else could she be made to impress anyone else? So she took it in stride. Took it like it was her calling. And still did she try her best. Bled her hands dry if it meant perfecting another stroke. And it had become so ingrained to who she had become that even as the shackles of her station finally lost their hold on her, she continued to perform the same way.

There was no other path. It was always going to be like this. Nothing new. Nothing else.

But when she saw the nose-scarred teacher switch places, it felt like color blossomed back to life. To be anywhere else in the world but here. To be with anything else that was not them. It was the key. The only thing she truly needed. So she did what she did best. Practiced. Practiced. Practiced again. She held no lofty goals like being the next Hokage, or to become the next Clan Head of the police force.

All she wanted to be, was to be where she would rather be.

And a pop into existence. Like a rubber band slamming back. Yui threw herself forward. Again and again. Sometimes she threw herself to the side. Then to the sky. Anywhere her feet couldn't take her to, she'd slam her energy into whatever could sling her back to wherever that is. It was like flying. A breath of actual air.

Like a puppet that didn't need strings to move anymore. And a puppet that didn't need strings could walk on its own. It could be wherever they wanted to be. And if it wanted to stay by the side of those who cared for her, then so be it.

Besides. Should she ever find herself lagging behind again. Well, just a Kawamiri No Jutsu and poof. The magic starts anew.

space space space

Despite the ever perfect posture and immaculate personality, Yui had oft found it so tedious to walk. Oh truly she understood the needs for it. To get where you wanted to go. To get what you wanted to get. But the effort to get from Point A to Point B? Certainly, that took far too long to accomplish. Imagine all the time one could save if they never bothered to walk to get there. If that, with a snap of their fingers, whatever it was they wanted would be next to them.

It generally started off as curiosity. The Prim and Proper of them all wanted to know how far this 'rubber band' could really stretch before it snapped back. Iruka-sensei had always cautioned them of its use. Of the limits of what chakra can do to their body and the target of replacement. Honestly, the man made a lot of sense. But, honestly as well, it was stupid to not at least try something new.

So with a drive that matched that of any Clan Heir, Yui practiced day and night. Again and again. From switching places to an unsuspecting rock, to a straw hat, and even a loose bandana floating in a sweltering summer afternoon. Whatever her chakra could latch on, she tried to replace herself with. Sometimes, it was successful. All the time, it was painful.

Disgraceful too, if only because of the stench that once refused to leave her.

But, with drive came results. And with results came even more drive. Bit by bit, switching and replacing almost became like breathing. Her control over that one technique expanded much like the Great Fireball the Uchiha were so proud of. And certainly, the elation she experienced switching places with a living body?

Truly, none were greater.

Except, maybe, for another frontier she could yet reach.

Perhaps, this rubber band had no limits after all.

Progress achievements appear to have been updated, and I think we get an Achievement for dying here.

The "pass jonin test" achievement stumps me a bit, though. I can't imagine that the other jonin give tests, or at least they shouldn't be giving something as hard as Kakashi's test. Is it a hint on which sensei we'll get?

(Like I am pretty sure we can't get Asuma because if he'd given any test at all Shikamaru would have failed and voluntarily went back for one more year.)

The talk of the invisible blade genjutsu reminds me of Creed Diskenth from Black Cat, but it'd be a long time before Daisuke could pull off the Imagine Blade.

It's pretty much as it sounds. An imaginary, invisible sword of variable length and so sharp that it doesn't cut; it simply shunts cells out of the way. The wounds heal quite easily, and limbs can be reattached fairly easily by a competent(or super-powered) medic. That's just the first iteration of the technique, of course, but the one Daisuke might be able to pull off. It was made of life energy there, and I imagine could be done with Chakra here, though it would be difficult.

Level two might be doable to. A Living black sword which bends, extends, and bites. But that'd require an absolutely immense amount of chakra, I'd figure.

Level three, where the sword becomes his arm and a third arm grows from his shoulder is right out.

Level Four/Level Max actually seems like it'd be easier than level two. It's an immense glowing blade. I could see it just being a sword version of Chidori or similar. Or, you know, just a Chakra lightsabre.

It'd be interesting to switch between the Illusion and Imagination just to mess with people. But that's some Jonin level stuff. Maybe in the next life.

On the note of invisible blades: we have shape manipulation, what say we get Wind nature and shape wind into blades? either in a regular sword form or something more like the Protoss psy-blades?

Or we can fuck with everyone and save up to buy Wood Release. Wasn't it a thing that no one had it since that one hokage? Or at least not to as good a degree?

I mean the solid white with a smile on it just seem

You need his DNA to do it

Or to buy a dual affinity perk for water and earth.

Essentially a bloodline though it weakens every other affinity.

Fluffwise it's no different than the originator of any other bloodline.

Though, didn't orochimaru sneak senju dna into a bunch of orphans and that's how we got yamato?

We could totally do it.

It's not always guaranteed even with Hashirama cells. I think Orochimaru's method only worked on Danzo and Yamato out of ~60 subjects, though he did improve his method a lot later on after he realised Yamato survived.

Ino may have a better way of getting Wood Release, actually. If she can find a way to permanently destroy the mind of a Zetsu clone and then use its body as a puppet, she'd be able to use their version of Wood Release. This may require some modifications to Yamanaka clan arts, but she should be talented enough to do it if we help.

It has a less than 2% survival rate, and that was when doing it on easily-modifiable child bodies. I know we'll come back in some form, but would rather not risk it.

If we must, use Shippuden Orochimaru's modified DNA transfer (works way better) or have a skilled medic like Kabuto perform it.

Been a long time since I've drawn but here's a quick drawing of Daisuke. Kinda lumpy but it captures him imo

Nice work! Take 110 XP.
@Vesvius A little swordfighting omake. All points to Ninjutsu please!

The two of them had met here. Ino didn't really remember, she was way too young at the time, but it was true nonetheless, and that really did hold some power to it. Three League Park had always felt a little special, at least to her and when she felt like Daisuke was acting strange, she had immediately steered them here. She refused to ask outright, she knew that's what he wanted her to do. No, he was going to break down and tell her, and it would be much better than her having to ask. It didn't matter the information that was just waiting for her to learn, nothing mattered, she just had to wait, if it took every ounce of patience she had. She was just going to ask him a little leading question, something to get the ball rolling. An opening move as Shikamaru might have said.

"Is something bugging you?" Ino was never known for her patience. "You've been acting weird all day."

"It's just… something about my kenjutsu." Ino knew that she was being lead. She couldn't really see where it was going at the moment, but every instinct in her eight year old brain was telling her that something was happening. Either way, she never could resist this kind of thing.

"Is it not going well?" She asked. "You didn't start that long ago. Maybe it just takes time?"

"No! It's going great really." Said Daisuke. "It might even be going a little too well honestly."

"Too well?" She asked, narrowing her blue eyes a little. She could start to see the net forming, the knots starting to tie, but she couldn't quite figure out how she fit in it. "How is that possible."

"It's hard to explain, but I'm reaching the limits of what I can do. Actually, that's the whole story really." Daisuke lay back on the wooden picnic table, Ino sitting behind him on one of the benches. "I just don't know how much further I can get with my kenjutsu without a consistent partner, because the dummies just aren't doing it any more."

"So, what?" Ino tossed her golden hair back, sending him a look that seemed to scream, what does this have to do with me. "What does you not having a sparring partner have to do with- wait… Daisuke, you know I can't. I have my families techniques to learn!"

Daisuke just looked at her, a pleading look on his face. The net had lowered.

"Daisuke, I don't even have a sword." Sometimes Ino didn't think that Daisuke realized that having a mother who would buy anything you asked for was definitely not normal.

"I've got an gift for you!" Daisuke pulled a scabbard from his side, pulling out a Wakizashi of cheap steel. Ino wrinkled her nose.

"You want me to use that?" The lowest member of the Yamanaka clan wouldn't usually deign to touch such cheap work. Ino was raised around Shinobi, around steel, and her standards were much higher than this. She raised the sword, and could feel it wiggle a little bit within its hilt. "This thing isn't fit for a common bandit."

"Well, it's all I can really afford myself." Daisuke scuffed the ground a little bit with his feet, his head hanging low. Ino felt a sharp pang of guilt. He had gotten that for her... "I had to do some extra chores to get the money for it. If you don't want it though-"

"No! I'll just… get another just in case, I love it- really!"

"So you wanna learn with me how to use a sword?" Daisuke finally looked up, a soft smile breaking the morose look.

"Yeah sure." Ino just wanted to move away from her faux pas. Now she needed to figure out how to explain it all to her father. Along with the need to buy her a new shortsword.

"Awesome! I can't wait."

Daisuke sprang off the picnic table and started strolling away. Ino followed as best she could, catching up with a burst of effort. As they walked she started to realize something she hadn't thought about in an effort to make up for her upsetting her friend.

"You just bought me that sword so that I would learn how to fight and could spar with you."

"Yep."

"Your mom would have gotten you a much nicer sword you could have given to me if you had just asked her. But then I wouldn't have felt like I needed to help."

"That seems likely."

"You're way too sneaky for your own good."

"Probably."

"I'm gonna learn to use this sword, but not for you. I'm gonna teach you to regret messing with me."

"I'm shaking in my sandals."

"Daisuke."

"Yeah Ino?"

"You should be."
Very nice work. Another prompt down. Take 60 XP (to ninjutsu as requested) and canon.
Omake: I was watching some one piece. @Vesvius all points to ninjutsu

Gai clutched a katana between his teeth as well as one in each hand. When Daisuke asked him for some kenjutsu tips, he was not expecting this.

"Gai-sensei, I'm not sure this is the right way to wield a sword."

"Nonsense Daisuke-kun! Half the swordsman I've fought have done something similar at some point in the fight! They're usually the better half too." Gai somehow managed to shout through the hilt clutched between his teeth, with perfect annunciation too. Daisuke stopped questioning this sort of thing at some point. "Obviously this is the superior technique if it keeps reappearing. I don't want to hear Kakashi mock me for teaching you something inferior, stifling your flames of Youth."

Daisuke looked at the two swords that Gai brought for him. He sighed, and took the hilt of one between his teeth, and clutched the other in his left hand, leaving his right hand for his favored katana. He could already feel his jaw muscles getting sore, and he knew that he couldn't strike with the same speed or strength.

Slowly, Gai rose up on one foot, bending into the crane stance. Daisuke couldn't figure out how that might help him, seeing as he wasn't very reliant on kicks. He could only imagine it was similarly something he had seen someone do somewhere.

Daisuke just stood in his traditional position. Without warning, he charged towards his teacher.

He tried to fight, but every time it seemed as though the swords were getting in the way of each other, making it impossible to fight with them. He swung one and it would hit the other, all the while the one in his mouth doing literally nothing at all. He threw the swords to the floor, leaving him with only the katana he had trained with. Once more he threw himself into the fray.

Now it was Gai who was on the defensive, his swords barely moving into position on time, even with his immense speed and strength.

Daisuke could see the beads of sweat pour down his mentors forehead. Finally he saw an opening in his defenses and leapt to seize it. But on his strong cut downward, his katana once more hit metal. He forgot about the third sword clutched between his teachers teeth. They leapt apart, and stayed there for a moment, both catching their breaths.

"Daisuke-kun." For once, Gai's speech sounded rather muffled, and there was an odd whistle every time he spoke.

"Yes, Gai-sensei?"

"Your flames of youth burn bright indeed." He whistled out. "But I believe I need a dentist."
Not canon, but hilarious. Take 40 XP, also to ninjutsu as requested.
@Vesvius

Hope this soothes the palette.

Daisuke found himself in the same position quite often. Emerald eyes focused on the trails created by the wind and moored by the rain. It mattered little what weather it was and, if he were to be honest, this ritual of his served to help train almost as much as Mr. Straw did. Hence why, despite the bitter rain and muddied earth, he knelt in front of the Tree.

It wasn't the only tree within the scope of his family's territory, but it had always been the one that stood apart from the rest. Strong. Stalwart. Ever watchful. And as thunder boomed and lightning crackled, so too did the leaves dance to the wilderness. One stroke. Two thrusts. Three, four, five, and then it became a dance of steel and rain.

Daisuke's body was a whirlwind of action. Lessons drilled into him from years of training were sublimed into a performance that tore leaves and moisture. It was far from perfect. He had missed more than he caught but as he finished the performance, Daisuke knew that there was some improvement to his actions. Barely faster. Barely more controlled. But he'd take that over no progress at all.

Sweat and rain clung to his hoodie. His chest heaved as he looked at the tree that somehow bore a special presence to him. It always felt special. Even when he had been a child. Even when he could barely carry the sword he now commanded with ease. It was always there. Always ready. Always teaching.

Mayhaps it was the lightning. Or the rain. Or the weight of his body. But there was a shadow there. Standing by the tree. Arms crossed and his bones knew that it looked at him. Rain nicked at his eyes. A blink. And the image dissipated like shallow dreams and once forgotten memories.

Yet still, it did not stop Daisuke from raising his sword in a salute. Sheathed the blade with the respect it deserved, and bowed to the Tree for what assistance it had offered. Wordlessly, the Tree watched. And if one could see beyond shadows, one might have taken the shaking branches as a nod. Exchange finished, the young man offered his back and made his way back home.

And it tore at Manami's heart to see her beloved gleam show such emotion. She always took the time to watch her offspring train. To hone skills that belonged to the blood of his father. She bore unimaginable pride at his dedication but even then, to act as if Tokei had taught him so much. It scorned her. But alas, it was not her little Daisuke's fault. And she would never give any such inclination to him. Not even on her deathbed would she ever show such hurt for the light of her life.

Daisuke must be tired. Exhausted even! Manami swept her thoughts and focused on the now. It would be unbelievable to call herself a mother if she could not at least help alleviate some of his troubles. Her feet glided along the wooden boards of their home. Mind already alit with what brew to use for her favourite little star. Thoughts of those who watched long since buried away, never forgotten, for another time.
Well, this is mildly depressing. Take 50 XP and canon.
@Vesvius

I meant that more as, 'if we need a fluff excuse for why we suddenly developed mokuton...'. but, yeah, I think ves did approve affinity perks, including double affinity which is essentially bloodlines, like haku's ice release.

probally wouldn't work as an excuse, because it's likely to be like mini straw, it just appears out of nowhere and no knows how to explain how this random kid has a famous bloodline now.

Start wearing anti anal piercing underwear layered with iron thread? Take Gai teaching to the extreme and prepare for the unexpected by doing the unexpected!
That'll just make it even worse, because now Kakashi will pants us and then stick it in :o .

It might impress him with our caution, I guess. If he doesn't mock us for it.

Well, remember Moegi*? She uses Wood Release in Boruto (in the trivia section somewhere?). I think they should be okay with us spontaneously developing it if it works for her. I don't remember if they actually bothered to justify her having it somehow, but I don't think they did.

Well, we should first check if Wood Release is even a possible perk to get. @Vesvius, would getting wood release as a perk be allowed, and if so, what would be the price?

I don't think it'll be allowed, but if it does and we can purchase bloodlines, I'd like to go for the Kaguya clan's bloodline instead of Wood Release. It is much more useful for CQC, where a blade user will be in 90% of the time.
