Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

Manners Maketh Man by Dr_Caduceus (canon)
For the viewing pleasure of @Vesvius and their lovely audience, I humbly present: Manners Maketh Man.

In Academy class 7-C, everyone knows that Manners Maketh Man. It could be called a class motto, for everyone has been told as much at one point or another. Others would call it a refrain, for not a day goes by that someone doesn't hear and repeat the words. Voices wavering, strong, and choking on tears have all said them. Ears red with embarrassment, covered by a hand to ward off another blow, or clenched in the vice grip of one who has caught in owner in violation of it's tenant, have all heard them. Yes, everyone in 7-C knows that Manners Maketh Man.

They know because the classes two-man public morals committee has made sure of it.

Ueda Arata had something of a reputation as a troublemaker, not entirely deserved in his opinion, and it had gotten him into trouble more than once. On his very first day of the academy he had been a little panicked about being sat next to Uzumaki and had made a bit of a fuss. In his defense he would later argue that the blonde haired boy was a known sleeper agent from a foreign village, simply waiting for a chance to strike, and he did NOT want to be the first to fall victim to whatever insidious plot was going on.

After the third variation of the suspected motives of Konoha's resident prankster, people began to realize that perhaps Ueda saw a few more ninjas in the shadows than actually lurked there.

No one forgot however how it was that the first of several tirades was shut down however. With a simple flicking of his fan and a glare that many nearby swore could melt stone, one Satomura Daisuke had begun his reign of terror.

His reign of very polite terror.

Inuzuka Kiba had once made the mistake of speaking of Miss Satomura Minami in a rather crude manner to someone sitting next to him. Rather than a chuckle or a dreamy expression of agreement, his would-be confidant merely stared mutely in horror. It took Kiba a moment to realize that the stare wasn't being directed at him but rather just over his shoulder. In that moment, Kiba knew he had a 50/50 shot at avoiding embarrassment. If it was Daisuke behind him then he could play off what was about to happen as jealousy, but if it was her...

Risking a glance, Kiba was greeted with a pink kimono, black shoulder length ringlets, and a smile that was anything but friendly.

In a saccharine voice, the silk clad kunoichi laid into him.

"Mr. Inuzuka, such vulgar language has no place in this classroom. If you cannot find it withing yourself to conduct yourself in a manner more becoming of a gentleman, I will have to ask you to remain silent. In fact, since you seem to have a misunderstanding on what the appropriate method of speaking of women is, it might be wise to write an essay on just that. I believe five hundred words should be doable by the end of the day if you use your lunch break wisely. I look forward to reading it."

With the entire class laughing at him, quietly so as to not attract her attention themselves, Kiba hung his head. Ears burning in shame, his hope that he could escape this dressing down without further embarrassment were dashed with her parting quip.

"If you find this unsatisfactory, I could instead write to your mother. Perhaps she could suggest an alternative solution?"

That got the rest of the class laughing in full, though they were quickly silenced by the sound of silk and steel, and Kiba hunched down in his chair mumbling the customary apology. Unfortunately, the she-devil in noble's finery didn't budge an inch. Kiba knew what she wanted and if she didn't get it things would only get worse for him. So mustering his remaining pride, he looked her in the eye and said his line like a good student.

"Thank you for correcting my coarse behavior Yui, I will do better in the future. Manners Maketh Man."

With his part played, Yui flashed him a triumphant smile and walked off. Leaving poor Kiba to the unenviable stares of his contemporaries, and an essay to write.

"Dammit," he thought to himself, "I was looking forward to my lunch today."

Forgot to actually vote in all my excitement for the omakes. :)

Hmmm. I want to skip since it might be a way for Naruto to be different from canon.

But I still voted for not skipping. Huh. Might change it later.

Om the topic of Genjutsus, It would be freaking amazing if we can make a minor genjutsu which focuses an oponents focus on the blade of our sword. Maybe make it seem more dangerous or something. In other words, a variation on the distraction with a side of intimidation.

A Matter of Focus by Karnax626 (canon)
Daisuke ducked to the side of the jab, hooking his arm around his opponent's wrist. He moved into a throw, using his other arm to increase his leverage as he slammed them into the ground, one fist poised above their head in preparation for a finishing blow. The scene held still for a moment, before the boy beneath him slumped, wordlessly acknowledging his defeat.

Daisuke promptly disentangled himself, standing and offering the Seal of Reconciliation as he always did after their spars, huffing slightly as he helped Sasuke to his feet.

"Your footwork is improving, although you still have the occasional tendency towards tunnel vision," he offered, though the words were perfunctory at best. The spar had been similar to dozens of previous ones, with only a few minor differences of any note.

It was clear Sasuke thought the same. "Practice?" he half-asked, grunting sourly at Daisuke's commiserating nod.

"Regardless, I look forward to our next spar," Daisuke said, inclining his head more respectfully, although he paused as Sasuke's face appeared to twist for a second before he rigidly brought it back under control. 'Ah,' he thought, glancing at their classmates sparring across the surrounding field. 'I suppose now would be as good a time as any to bring this up'.

"If I may ask Sasuke," he said slowly, firming his resolve as his rival's head snapped up to watch him warily, "I have seen some of your spars with our peers, and you do not seem to give them the same attention you do to me."

He held up a hand as Sasuke started to scoff, "I am aware that they are predominantly well within your capabilities to handle, and I have not known you to treat them carelessly as some of our more egotistical classmates might, but at the same time it can feel like your focus is... shallow, for lack of a better word. You deal with them efficiently, but more out of a seeming desire to get it over with than any desire to use it for training."

Sasuke looked at him, the scorn on his face having shifted to a more neutral expression containing hints of confusion. "They're weaker than us," he stated, the puzzlement starting to grow. "You've just said that I don't need to try hard to beat them, why would I do more than that?"

"You don't think the training is worth it?"

Sasuke snorted. "They might be good for conditioning, but I can only-" he bit his lip. "Improvements can only come when you fight someone stronger. That's how you trained, right?"

Daisuke hummed in acquiescence. "True. I would not have achieved my current level had it not been for Gai-sensei, but that is not quite what I meant. Your body is not the only thing that can be trained. Your mind is also important. If you go into a fight assuming you know what is to come you increase the odds of your defeat, even via such simple means as bad luck."

Black eyes narrowed as the Uchiha shifted on his feet. "Luck? You really think luck has any place in a real fight?"

A man standing across from you, his shadow stretching across the depths of the alleyway. An unsheathing, leaning forward-

"Never discount luck," Daisuke tried (and failed) to force down the twisted morass of emotion that had just surfaced, ignoring the startled look on Sasuke's face. "It does not matter who or what your opponent is. You might not be able to account for it entirely, but not mitigating it out of carelessness would be the height of foolishness."

"An excellent point, Daisuke-kun." Both boys flinched as Iruka-sensei spoke out from nearby, walking over to stand facing the two of them. "It is true that focus should be maintained no matter who your opponent is. However, it isn't just bad luck that you should be aware of. A weaker opponent can still catch you off guard with an unknown technique, especially if you go in thinking you know all there is to know about them. They could even trick you into underestimating them by pretending to be weaker than they actually are!"

Iruka then leaned in closer, the two students unconsciously mirroring him to better listen as he dropped the lecturing tone he'd been adopting more and more over his time as their teacher, "Of course, here in the Academy it's doubly important that you learn more about your classmates. After all, you'll be working alongside them in the future, maybe even in the same team! Better to build bonds now, neh?"

At this Sasuke looked away, disinterest starting to spread across his formerly intent features in sharp contrast to Iruka's smile, which dipped fractionally as he looked at the Last Uchiha. "Well, something to keep in mind at least." As he turned he called to the rest of the class, signalling the end of sparring.

Daisuke looked at his classmate (he still wasn't sure whether Sasuke counted as a friend or even rival), noting the thoughtfulness hidden behind his eyes before shrugging to himself and walking in the direction of the gathering students. Sasuke would listen or he wouldn't, Daisuke pushing him would just be counter-intuitive at this point. In the meantime he'd need to work on his peripheral vision, as Iruka-sensei should not have caught him off guard like that. What would Gai-sensei think?!
Many thanks to @Vermeer for the help beta'ing this omake. Never really done one of these before on either here or SB, but I'm pretty pleased with what I have. It started as a follow up idea from that omake of Daisuke's first spar with Sasuke post-massacre, and how the latter's treatment of the other kids might change in spars, unlike that of his treatment of Daisuke. Plus I feel like we could do with more of Iruka being cool.

@Vesvius I hope this is worthy?

Other note: vote will close sometime tomorrow so I can try and hammer out 34. There will be no formal deadline, so look out for that!

I have some thoughts about tone of discord.

We use a katana which is normally a two-handed weapon, therefore we are limiting our self with the use of the fan. We are not using a ninjato or wakizashi. A katana can be used one-handed, but should primarily be used two-handed. It gives more power to our swings and most kenjutsu styles utilizing the katana would be two-handed.

Using our mothers fan in combat is also not a good idea, it would most likely break after a while, we should really only use it in social settings. We would need to get a combat fan, which has more negatives than positives.

With the possibility of having a free hand for short periods, we could learn to use one-handed seals, therefore making us able to use our sword one-handed while we use ninjutsu and genjutsu.

Regarding the technique itself: I recommend that we get the technique up to a level were we can change it to using a bell tied to our headband or hair instead, or to get a ring to replace the fan. It is also more efficient to use a bell, since it can be used immediately after the hand seals. We wouldn't have to draw our weapons afterwards.

If we learn to use the genjutsu without hand seals we could use it while we're fighting with kenjutsu, in the middle of a swing for example. Lastly using a bell will not limit our kenjutsu by forcing us to fight one-handed or forcing us to draw the fan and equip right after.

I believe that the fan limits our combat ability to a very large degree.

[X] No, you'll pack up and head to class right now. You haven't missed a day yet and you're not starting now!

Clearly, the only possible solution is to grow a third hand.

Time to start studying biology and medical chakra, I guess.

On a less sarcastic note, having a tessen as a concealed or backup weapon is not unreasonable, so there's no reason to wholly abandon the fan. And unless the fan itself is specifically important to the technique there's no reason to remain wholly reliant on it, so alternative means should at least be explored.

That is for people without super strength.

If two swordsmen with roughly the same level of super strength fight, the one who holds his katana two-handed has more power to his swings.

Although I will admit that this quest is set in a fictional universe were there are lots of people that use two-handed swords one-handed and some of them huge, but even they change to a two-handed grip sometimes I would say. So we are removing that possibility, or removing that possibility in the middle of a kenjutsu exchange. Also it would limit the styles we can use.

Alternative means for the genjutsu should not only be explored, they should supplant the original. I do not necessarily have a problem with a tessen, but it wouldn't make the technique more efficient anyhow. Using a bell would make the execution of the technique much faster. Also we can't channel wind chakra yet, so until that time the fan would be virtually useless.

Anyone can stick with the basics, but it takes a true technician to seek out new knowledge.

@Vesvius I believe we should have unlocked this Achievement since Tone of Discord is at Intermediate, and is self-created.

[X] See if you can get your teachers for approval to work on this instead of reviewing old stuff. Prove you know it already, if you have to!
Pretty good, though I don't see Kakashi actually offering to teach some kid he's never met before, even if they're Gai's student. At most I imagine he'd do what he does in the omake, and help Gai brush up on his own skills so that he can better pass them on to Daisuke.
I personally figure Kakashi was using that to get Gai's attention. Gai would freak if he thought of Kakashi teaching his hip and cool ways to his precious student.

Eh, it keys off a specific note, the fan is inspiration, but as long as you can make a consistent sound, the prop used won't matter beyond tuning.

@Vesvius @RedV Also unlocked this achievement.

You have the headband. You have the freedom. But do you have the abilities to back it up?

We don't get it until we actually manage to reach that level of skill/mastery in character. Out of character, we've got the XP for it. But we haven't actually spent the full time to go through all the trail & error nor all the practice and refinement in character yet. We've gotten started on it, and spent a little while on it. But we haven't spent the time represented by that XP for Intermediate level technique mastery yet, so we don't automatically get the Achievement until a bit of time has been spent proving it in character to show we earned it.

At least, that's my understanding of it, based off of Ves' comments in-thread regarding the whole Appearance thing.

Same argument as above.

Wait until the next update, when we've got the time IC to finalize it and prove it IC through actual training time.

@kenmadragon Oh, makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

Anyways, here are some achievements that we should try to get in the future due to the ease of them, for future reference.
