Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

[X] [CHAKRA CONTROL] You know that no one else has mastered Tree Walking yet, and you're fairly sure that no one has even started with it. You can master it and set yourself ahead of the pack.

[X] [HENGE] What's the most important thing about transformation? Being able to do it flawlessly. You'll stand and transform over and over, until you can assume the appearance of everyone in your class seamlessly.

[X] [GENJUTSU] You've had an idea for a Genjutsu for a while. It involves your sword, your fan, and hitting just the right note. Creating a technique from nothing is a tall order, but you've done harder things!

[X] [HISTORY] There're a lot of thoughts about the Land of Iron floating around in your head, and most of them aren't flattering. But what do you really know about them? You'll do a project on their history and culture. It'll be interesting, it'll give Iruka-sensei something different to chew over, and it'll give you some background on your heritage. Three birds, one stone!

[X] [MATH] An important part of Shinobi Math is calculating areas and distances at a glance. And you know what would show off your mastery of that? Designing the perfect trap layout. You'll make one on graph paper and then recreate it during a spar.

[X] [NINJUTSU] You have chakra, and you know how to enhance your body with it. You also have a sword. There should be a way for you to put those two things together- and if not, you can make one.

[X] [HENGE] A Henge is only good as long as you can do it quickly. And what slows down Henge the most? The hand seals! It's a three-seal jutsu, so with enough practice you should be able to shave a few seals off of that. Maybe even do it without if you work hard enough!

[X] [CHAKRA CONTROL] One of the things you've noticed that you do is flare your chakra when you're preparing a technique. If you could get that under control then you would be able to use jutsu without anyone who doesn't have a direct view of you noticing!

[X] [HISTORY] It's hard to believe, but there was a time before Hidden Villages. You can't really picture it, but old tales from those days have survived. You want to know more. You'll assemble a presentation on the time before villages, the Warring States era, and present that to the class.

So @Vesvius how much would a trait cost that would always let us remember someones name and face?
and how much more would it cost if you added remembering a few important details about them if they are important themselves.

We need some guaranteed wins here and our other classmates wouldn't know about it.

This write in by @Paloswag is frankly very good, I think people should consider it, not many have done so. I don't believe the winning option to be as useful in combat as this. Using both our sword and fan in combat would limit us unnecessarily.

[X] [HENGE] What's the most important thing about transformation? Being able to do it flawlessly. You'll stand and transform over and over, until you can assume the appearance of everyone in your class seamlessly.

The whole point of the henge is to change your appearance into a believable disguise.

Choosing the warring clans and not the land of Iron is a lot more politically sound.
Although I think we need to know as much as possible about Konoha, how it is organized, how to thrive and succeed. We should blend in, become truly apart of it. I think that by choosing the Third Hokage, a man that is entwined into the very fabric of the village, it would deepen that understanding.
Besides, it would further protect us from suspicion and the possible doubts of the higher ups. Also, he has had a very interesting life filled with both hardship and victories.

I believe this to be a more rounded choice that is also more combat oriented.

[X] [NINJUTSU] You have chakra, and you know how to enhance your body with it. You also have a sword. There should be a way for you to put those two things together- and if not, you can make one.

This is both easier than mastering elemental chakra and more worthwhile than trying to find any jutsu in the archive. It also goes well with the genjutsu write in I've chosen.
On the other hand, asking Gai for help wouldn't be so bad.

[X] [GENJUTSU] Genjutsu hijacks the senses and hacks the brain. A good way to do both is sight, since eyes are like a direct connection to the brain. Why not take advantage of that? You could create a genjutsu tied to flashes of light off your blade and the swirl of motion of your hoodie.

What is Daisuke's Final Project for Henge no Jutsu?
[] [HENGE] What's the most important thing about transformation? Being able to do it flawlessly. You'll stand and transform over and over, until you can assume the appearance of everyone in your class seamlessly.
[] [HENGE] A Henge is only good as long as you can do it quickly. And what slows down Henge the most? The hand seals! It's a three-seal jutsu, so with enough practice you should be able to shave a few seals off of that. Maybe even do it without if you work hard enough!
[] [HENGE] The primary use of Henge is to change your appearance to look like someone else, but a truly advanced user can look like anything. You'll work on transforming into inanimate objects and hiding yourself in places people won't ever think of looking!

I really like that all these examples are things Naruto can already do pretty easily. Really hammers in how good he is with Henge. We know he can do it with one seal, can pretty much transform into anyone he wants (or even made up people, like the Sexy no Justu, although I'm not sure if this is harder to do), and also into inanimate objects, like the fuuma shuriken in the first fight against Zabuza. (I'm not even sure what does transforming himself and Gamabunta into a giant fox/Kyuubi mean regarding his skill).

I'm not sure we can properly demonstrate that we are better than him with it if he decides to show off his Henge skills. Cause truthfully, he is probably way better than us at it.

@Vesvius
This is really good writing, also foreshadowed when he stole our fan. I kinda think we can't beat him in Henge - hopefully it won't matter too much.

[X] [NINJUTSU] You vaguely remember that elemental ninjutsu are considered more difficult to learn and master than the ordinary type; that's one of the reasons Sasuke is running away with the Ninjutsu ranking. You should match him and learn your own elemental techniques. Of course for that, you need to know what your element is. There's paper for that, right? You could buy it- or steal it, if it comes down to it.

[] [GENJUTSU] You don't have any offensive Genjutsu, and that's a problem. You'll experiment and try to come up with something that accentuates your favorite mode of attack: kenjutsu. By creating a technique that conceals the top two or three inches from the tip of your sword, opponents will misjudge the maximum range of your swings.

Here's my write-in, it got buried a while ago, so I'm reposting so more people consider it.

The technique is really a simple D or low C rank technique, but when combined with a master swordsman becomes an absolutely lethal support jutsu. All shinobi are trained to judge for reach in combat, where a centimeter could mean the difference between life and death. Initially, the technique almost guarantees a wound in melee combat unless the enemy can see through the genjutsu. This is made harder when they're already trying to dodge or block.

It also scales with our skill in kenjutsu. Imagine combining it with any of the quick-draw sword styles common in feudal Japan. There are countless visual tricks we could develop with this as the base.

Even if it doesn't win now, I think it would be worth acquiring for the future.

@Paloswag I like your technique. Its simple and will prob be very effective combined with Daisuke's close combat skills. Hopefully in the future, we can learn this. In the meantime, sound genjutsu has a good AOE and seems to also be effective against high tiered opponents like pain.

I really do recommend these.

While sound is definitely useful, people can plug their ears once they figure it out and still function well. Sight, on the other hand....outside of the odd totally-blind ninja, every depends on their sight in battle. Even once they've figured it out the enemy is crippled, since the only way to not get snared again and again is to not look at us or our blade. Essentially, even upon failure this deprives the enemy of much of their vision.

As for the budget over the trap? it leaves a lasting impact on the future of the academy, simultaneously reinforcing our ties to Konoha in a loyalty, etc.

Studies in Attractiveness by Katsuragi (canon)
@Vesvius - exp to appearance.

"You said that you had something important to discuss with me, mother?" You state formally as yo walk into the living room. Manami, said mother, is sitting regally in the chair she reserves for entertaining guests and her more formal interactions with you. Some might find the formality with her child weird, but you are well aware of the standards of nobility and proper interpersonal interactions. All things in their time and place.

"Yes, son, something rather vital." She gives a soft smile. "You've recently turned 13 and your graduation fast approaches. You may have noticed some changes coming to your body, and..."

You blanch. Is this the talk? Is your mother giving you the talk? You knew this was bound to happen. Vague remembrances of your past life aside, some of your friends had already hinted at the horrors of having to go through this themselves. However, you have a trump card reserved for just this occasion.

Your mom beats you to it, however, holding up a hand to forestall, while giving you an amused look. "As fun as it would be to give you that particular talk, it's unnecessary. I'm well aware the academy covers such things. It would be irresponsible not to, given the level of independence granted to shinobi teams."

You let out a breath. Crisis adverted.

"Related, however."

...she's fucking with you. You know that she is. The slight upturn of her right lip says she's enjoying your comfortableness immensely.

"There are certain things that you need to be aware of, certain training that you have to undergo now that you're fully growing into your body. Both I and your father have bred true, in you, and that's something must be cultivated."

And now you're just mildly lost.

"Daisuke. You're aware that you're already one of the most attractive individuals in your class?"

You mull it over. It wasn't something you'd actually sat down and thought about, but it was something you'd, perhaps, taken for granted. Everyone was just starting to get into the age where you'd notice the occasional look, and some of your classmates acting a touch odd around you. Giving it some consideration, you'd say you were in the same ballpark of such attentions as Sauske. He was ahead of you in such regards, factoring in his tragic backstory and the loner stick he pulled, but there wasn't anyone else in the class that demanded such attention. On the boys side, at least.

"Indeed." You give a small nod to show your understanding.

"It's going to get more so. I can see your father's features already coming through. In the next few months there will be few people in the village on your level. You'll find that such attractiveness makes your life easier, for the most part. People more willing to talk to you, trust you, give you opportunities. There are lesser drawbacks, however. People will be paying more attention to you in general, there will be those that take an almost vindictive pleasure in watching for you to slip or have a bad day, and you'll have to deal with your adoring fans."

That did give you pause as you placed yourself in Sauske's position. That...wasn't the most enviable future you could see in your mind.

She gives you a knowing smile, easily reading your thoughts. "Part of your training will be focusing on how to deal with these things, turning them to your advantage, or mitigating them where needed. As you can imagine, this is important. The number of suitors I've had to deal with alone would have caused a good deal of inconveniences and headaches if I hadn't had the proper training to deal with them."

You...really didn't need to hear about your mother's suitors.

"On the other hand." She drawls slightly, demonstrating where you picked up the habit. "It has worked to your advantage."

This earns an eyebrow raise on your part.

"Your classmates did spend an inordinate amount of time here compared to elsewhere, as I'm sure you noticed. The amount of travel time you saved and having classmates frequently on hand only did positive things for your advancement and studies."

You blink. "Are you implying that..."

"I usually found time to make a brief appearance while you had classmates over? I was a teenager myself, not long ago."

You shudder slightly.

"I believe that's enough for the formal discussion." She stands. "It's time for a field trip to begin the practical classes."

You honestly have no idea what that would entail. Socializing with random people, maybe? Watching her do so?

"Time to go clothes shopping." She nods decisively, and you bite back the horror that shoots through you. You've spent enough time doing that with Ino, you know where this is going.

"A major part of appearance is knowing how to dress specifically for yourself. Colors, how things are cut, what's appropriate to what kinds of events, weather, and so on. Part of your formal lessons on this topic will be addressed at such things. We will then take lunch, and I will instruct you on how to hold yourself in public, how to draw attention without being obvious about it, and how to play a crowd without seeming like you're even aware of them. Such things will be part of your education over the next few months."

You find yourself very thankful for how little you need to sleep.

"After that, Gai-san has graciously agreed to come and have a chat with you, man to man as your father isn't around."

Gai? What did Gai have to do with this? Oh. Oh no. No no no.

"You said...but you said it wasn't necessary because the academy covered it!"

There's a gleam in her eye. "Unnecessary, yes. It would be unbecoming of me as a mother to allow you to skip out on the lesson one on one with an older male. As the closest thing to a male role model and father figure to you in this village, Gai-san is the optimal choice."

This...this was a special kind of hell, reserved for those that got a disappointing rating in their previous life.

He lives a nice quiet life until the ten tails awakens and then he gets killed by one of the missed Bijuu balls exploding his town.

I'd be fine with going the civilian route and changing my vote if someone can point out 1 canon character who got even close to S class while living in a ordinary peasant village
This is such a strawman.
But that death cultist dude was in like the village of hotsprings and got hella op.

Meep, this looks like a fun quest. Looking forwards to catching up. Tho I dislike the use of Japanese terminology. Meh, can deal with it. The quest is totes worth it.

[X] [HISTORY] It's hard to believe, but there was a time before Hidden Villages. You can't really picture it, but old tales from those days have survived. You want to know more. You'll assemble a presentation on the time before villages, the Warring States era, and present that to the class.

[X] [MATH] An important part of Shinobi Math is calculating areas and distances at a glance. And you know what would show off your mastery of that? Designing the perfect trap layout. You'll make one on graph paper and then recreate it during a spar.

[X] [NINJUTSU] Ask Gai-sensei if he might be able to help you, or help you find a mentor he trusts with the time and specialization, learn a ninjutsu technique so you can demonstrate to the Instructors that you have the fundamentals of ninjutsu down to ROTY tier.

Unless you fix the brackets, you vote for chakra control isn't going to get in, man.

[X] [CHAKRA CONTROL] One of the things you've noticed that you do is flare your chakra when you're preparing a technique. If you could get that under control then you would be able to use jutsu without anyone who doesn't have a direct view of you noticing!

[X] [GENJUTSU] The most essential part of Genjutsu is being able to get out of them. So you'll hone your release methods, practicing every way you can think of.

[X] [MATH] Budgets are important, even if just thinking the word makes your eyes roll up into the back of your head out of sheer boredom. So what could be a better way to prove your skills than by trying to save the Academy some money? It would involve a lot of research and a lot of estimations, but if you're right, it's a guaranteed way to move up the ranks.

[X] [NINJUTSU] You have chakra, and you know how to enhance your body with it. You also have a sword. There should be a way for you to put those two things together- and if not, you can make one.
