Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

I asked Ves in his Discord and he said she has Black hair.

He also gave this pic as a teen/adult Yui.

What is the source material for that pic and does it have any bearing on the type of person Yui is?

Unfamiliar with the site, so my mistake. I'll edit it into the earlier post; I assume I just type it the way you did and it'll tag him?
It just makes it easier to see in thread since it will generate a separate alert saying so and so tagged you in a post, similiar to how a quoted post will generate a separate alert.

Huh, actually, with 400 XP... We could get the 12 Practiced Skills Achievement right now by throwing 100 at Gen, 200 at Nin, and then 100 to use for anything that qualifies such as Swim or Shurikenjutsu.

Void Stalker, could you get the attention of those with unspent XP?

I think some of them have not been on since before I posted the spreadsheet.

Huh, that complicates things... so how much of the 400 XP actually can be used soon? I suggest we either focus on Above-Average Charisma, or tick off the 12 Practiced Achievement.

Urge to waifu increasing...

Speaking of which, I really enjoyed that opening about Daisuke's relationship with Ino.

Since you began your education at the Academy, there is no one in your life that you've spent more time with than Yamanaka Ino. Mother, you see in the morning and at night. Gai-sensei, you only really see in the afternoon and only then when he's free from missions. But Ino? You talk with her before class starts, you run alongside her during class workouts, you spar with her on a regular basis, you eat lunch with her, you work with her in group projects. Basically, whenever you're not sitting and listening to lectures from Iruka-sensei, you're with Ino. And as such, you've gotten to be pretty good at judging her moods.

They come in four flavors. There's Happy Ino, who woke up on the right side of the bed and just wants to do her best today. Then there's Grouchy Ino, who is suffering for some unknown reason and won't rest until the world has suffered alongside her. After that there's Princess Ino. Princess Ino needs everything to be going exactly as she wants and by god she's going to get it. Ironically, Princess Ino's probably the easiest one to deal with; you just redirect her rage towards another target and watch the fireworks.

But then there's the Ino that you saw when you walked into the Academy this morning: the one you've affectionately named Evil Ino. The symptoms of Evil Ino are easy to recognize. Every other Ino is almost constantly in motion; she's a fidgeter. She's always playing with her hair or rearranging her pencils or just shifting around in her seat. Evil Ino, however, doesn't move a muscle she doesn't have to. She remains eerily still, almost frozen in place at all times. Her face is carefully composed in an almost pleasant mask that reminds you of a serial killer more than anything else. Evil Ino always has something in her hands, usually gripped as if she's getting ready to jam it through someone's temples. Today is no exception; today, her stabbing weapon of choice is a calligraphy brush.

Evil Ino is tricky to deal with. It all depends on what's set her off. If it's you, there's nothing you can do. You just need to sit back and let her get it out of her system. Sure, you'll suffer, but it's worse when you try and run or defuse it. Thankfully, the times you're the target of Evil Ino's rage are few and far between, and limited to the one time you were so caught up with Gai-sensei that you forgot you promised to pack mule for her at the clothing stores. And from the way she's not glaring a hole through you from the moment you walked through the door, you're almost certain that that's not going to change today.

It really shows how close he and Ino have become-basically best buddies at this point. Especially seeing as how he knows her well enough to identify all of her moods and be able to handle them.

Also, one thing I'm curious about considering our dual-focus into kenjutsu and taijutsu is if they'll be any correlating Perks for the two in a similar vein to Fallout New Vegas. In that game several Melee Perks and Unarmed Perks would work for their corresponding field i.e Slayer needed 90 Unarmed to get, but it would increase both Unarmed and Melee attack speeds.

24. The Forest Endures
Verbal destruction would be a lot of fun, but it would probably get you some nasty looks that you don't really need right now. And just beating her down would probably get you and Ino in actual trouble unless you had a really good excuse; somehow, you doubt 'she's being real mean to my friend' would do it. With the two direct options out that leaves you with one plan.

"I think we need to branch out," you muse. At Ino's questioning look, you continue. "Right now Mariko's friends feel like they can do whatever they want to us-"

"To me," Ino interrupts.

"To you, yes, but they will probably move on to me next if they think they can get away with it. Anyway, they feel like they can do whatever they want because they outnumber us. You know what Iruka-sensei always says: 'The tree falls, but the forest endures'. So since we're just two trees we can be cut down really easy."

"You think we need a forest," Ino says, following your chain of thought. "I get it, but…"

"But?"

"I don't really think I wanna do that," she says. The Evil Ino look is gone and all that's left is confusion. It's not something you're familiar with seeing on your friend. Ino can be a lot of things, but uncertain is not one of them. "I mean, this is my problem. Our problem," she hastily adds on at your look. "Wouldn't it be wrong to go out and get other people just to deal with it?"

You see her point. But you don't agree. And besides, it's not like you're going to be tricking anyone. You're just making new friends that might help you if they wanted to. You say as much to Ino. When she still looks uncertain you go on. "If you weren't dealing with Mariko and her buddies right now, what would you be doing?"

Ino's brow scrunches in thought. "I guess I would be meeting everyone and making sure they know that I'm the best!"

"Right. You would be meeting new people and getting to know them," you reply. "So you would be making friends. Just because Mariko's being an idiot doesn't mean that you should do anything different then what you would normally do."

Your friend ponders your words, and finally nods. Before she says anything you already know her answer as the scrawl starts to speak in your ears.

On Failure: Relationship with Yokota Mariko becomes 'Outright Hostile', Relationship loss with Yamanaka Ino.

Well, that seems like it could be important. You had best not fail. After Ino finally agrees with you you rise and head back to your seat. As you sit back down and terrify Ren with a glance- god above that's fun- your mind is whirling with ideas and possibilities. Who should you approach, how should you do it? Do you just walk up, ask to borrow a pencil and then become best friends forever? Should you share food? Maybe you should share food.

But for all your ideas and plans, it's Ino who winds up bringing the first newcomer into your little circle of two. When you head out for lunch that day you find your regular spot empty. Ino isn't hard to find however; she's in a shouting match with Ami on the other side of the yard. Behind Ino cowers Sakura, who looks like she's doing any and everything possible to not be noticed. The destroyed lunch at her feet tells you the entire story. Looks like Ami decided to step up her game and your friend took exception to that.

You sit down in your normal spot and wait. If Ino needs you, she'll have no hesitation in calling for you. Your assistance doesn't seem necessary though; a few minutes after you sit down, Ino leads a trembling Sakura over to you and plants her down between the two of you. "Daisuke," Ino proudly proclaims. "This is Haruno Sakura, and she's going to be sitting with us!"

Sakura bows deeply in your direction, somehow bending into a full ninety degree angle despite already sitting down. "I'm sorry for the imposition Daisuke-san!" she almost yelps. "I'll move if I'm bothering you!"

...huh. Apparently you're terrifying. Good to know. But you don't want to terrify Sakura. Instead you reach out and push her back to a normal sitting position. "It is no bother," you allow. "It is a pleasure to have you with us."

Before Sakura can say anything else, you rummage in your lunch bag. "I noticed that your food suffered a mishap. I have fresh gyoza that I would be happy to share."

"Ooooh!" Ino cheers. "You're lucky, Sakura! Satomura-sama makes the best food! And here! I've got some greens from Daddy's greenhouse! They were just picked this morning!"

Sakura tentatively digs into the offered food and Ino skillfully manages the conversation. Talking about lunch leads to talking about what else Ino's father grows in his greenhouse which leads to talking about flowers- something, you know from too much experience, that Ino can talk about for days. Literal days. You counted. Before your eyes Sakura is drawn out of her shell and into the whirlwind that surrounds Ino. You don't think she'll be leaving your friend's side any time soon.

But while Sakura may be Ino's contribution to your little forest that doesn't mean that you can just sit back and do nothing. So that afternoon during sparring you keep your eyes open for opportunity. Opportunity isn't hard to find. Instead it walks right up to you in the form of Hiruma Jabari.

You've noticed Jabari. Everyone has noticed him. It's actually kind of hard to miss him. The boy is already the size of a small man, reaching up to Iruka's shoulders despite his young age. And while most people his age and height are string beans, Jabari is the exact opposite. Besides Chouji he's probably the heaviest person in class- and he doesn't have Chouji's bowling ball stomach to help him with that. Combine that with his darker skin and spikey blonde hair, he's a difficult guy to not see. That doesn't mean you've spoken with him though.

You should change that.

The two of you waste no time in getting into it when Iruka-sensei signals the start of your fight. Jabari may be stronger, a little faster, and have a huge reach advantage, but he still doesn't have anywhere near your technique nor your willingness to just punch someone. You've destroyed everyone you've sparred so far and Jabari is no exception. You take care of him with a quick trip into a knee lift.

Ordinarily after a fight you just let your opponent get up, make the seal of reconciliation, and move on with your life. Today though, you're on a mission. Instead of walking away you offer a hand up to your defeated opponent. He looks at it blearily for a long moment before taking it. You pull him to his feet and offer him a slightly deeper nod than you usually give people.

That's not where your attempts at friendliness end however. When Iruka-sensei calls the next fight in you take your normal spot next to Ino and casually steer Jabari next to you- the guy doesn't even notice you doing it. As Kairi and Akio take their places in the center, you lean over towards Jabari. "You fell for a feint," you tell him. "You were watching my hands. Should have been watching my center."

You can feel more than see Jabari's eyes on you. "Why are you telling me this?" he gravels out, voice low and raspy. "It will make it easier for me to crush you next time."

"Sure it will," you say dismissively. "Eventually you might catch up to me. But until then, I just want a good fight."

That seems to have been the correct answer. He smiles and grunts in a satisfied manner, giving you a good look at his teeth. Holy fuck does he file those things?! Or is that genetic?!

Whatever the case, you've made his acquaintance. And you follow it up the next day, challenging him to a brief contest before lunch. When you win you don't let him walk away. Instead you steer him again. This time, you head towards your little group. Again you share lunch. The next day you don't even have to steer him. He just drops down next to you and starts trading 'warrior tips!', whatever those are.

That's not to say your every attempt to make a friend succeeds. Most don't. Ino shows up the day after with rage on her face again. You don't even bother asking her why; you saw her trying to convince Shikamaru and Chouji to give up 'staring at the sky like a pair of idiots' to come eat with you and all she got was a face full of frustration. And your attempt to repeat your success at the sparring field with Sasuke is denied. All you get for your efforts is a 'thanks for the tip' and renewed determination to beat you. Apparently rivalry doesn't translate to 'lunch buddy' at all.

However even with your failures, you don't remain a foursome for long. You're fresh off your attempt with Sasuke and plotting your next move when you're greeted with a new presence seated to Ino's left. Hazakura Yui looks nearly serene as she sits in a formal posture with a tiny table laid out in front of her. If you didn't see her pink kimono rise and fall with every breath, you might think she was a statute.

You shoot a look at Ino and get a shake of her head. This one wasn't her. And it wasn't you. Which means you have no idea why Yui is here. "Excuse me," you say as you take your place on Ino's other side. "Why are you sitting here?" you ask.

Yui turns to look at you. A bit of mischief sparkles in her eyes. "Is there another place I should be sitting?"

"Um, no?" Ino answers. "But I think he wants to know why you're here. With us. Don't you have friends you normally sit with? I-"

"I did," Yui allows. "I chose not to sit there anymore. I trust there are no objections to my presence here?"

Jabari raises his hand as if he's in class and you have to fight not to roll your eyes. He's still a little squeamish about breaking the boundaries in the silent girl-boy war that rages on in every school. "I-" he starts.

Yui turns to face Jabari and he freezes. Her eyes close slightly and she glares at him through her lids. "Your posture is horrible," she hisses. "Straighten your back!"

On instinct, the larger boy does, and the dangerous air fades from the prim girl. "Thank you, Jabari-san! I appreciate your willingness to take constructive criticism!"

By silent agreement none of you object to Yui's sudden presence and none of you ask why she's suddenly sitting with you. But she seems to enjoy herself; she's back the next day. And when you sit next to her, the fanfare triggers in your ears. "Quest completed!"

Damn. You were hoping you would have a chance to signal that you were done with it on your own. Maybe see if there were any bonus rewards for making more than the bare minimum friends. But looks like the game doesn't want you to find out. All you get is some experience.

Experience, and you find Mariko backing off. Where before she would talk trash, now a Sakura almost vicious in her defense of Ino wastes no time in telling her to shut up. Where before she would 'trip' and have an accident on your friend, Jabari's glower freezes her in her tracks. And if she somehow manages to muster up the courage to ignore them both, she's almost completely frozen out by Yui's supercilious manners and weakly focused killer intent. The rest of her crew follows suit.

Finally, Ino can breathe again at the Academy. It's not any better at home but having a safe place to retreat to lets her get her bearings and find her center. It's what she needed to not snap and break Mariko into itty bitty pieces. Plus, she seems just plain thrilled to have so many new people to talk to.

And she talks to them quite a lot. You both do. Jabari, Sakura, and Yui seem to find their reasons to hang out with the two of you at almost every turn. Jabari sticks to you most of the time, and you find yourself echoing his boisterous manner and loud battle cries just as much as he picks up some of your cool reserve and silent judgement of others. Sakura is Ino's friend first and foremost. She likes you, sure, once she gets over being terrified, but Ino's her personal savior. It's honestly a little heartwarming to see your bossy friend have someone to mold in their image. And as for Yui? She just stays around, floating from person to person, correcting them and being friendly with them in equal measure.

The added people are good for Ino, but more than that, they're good for you too. Because it isn't long passed the first marking period that your scrawl goes off again.

YOU HAVE ATTAINED THE ACIEVEMENT 'DRES...ING YOURSELF'! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT!

YOU HAVE ATTAINED THE ACHIEVEMENT 'THE ESSENTIALS'! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT!

You're so surprised by the message that you almost miss Ino's latest explanation of the meaning behind flowers; something she seems very insistent that you pick up. You're able to barely reply but your attention is on your menu. The Dressing Yourself achievement, you'd been expecting for a while now. With all the talking you've been doing your social attributes were bound to grow anytime. But the other one? That's new.

You find it quickly. The Essentials. 'Congratulations! Through dedicated time and effort, you can now do things previously considered impossible… including get dressed, run, and know not to run in your good clothing!' Unlock Condition: Unlock the achievements 'Armed in a Battle of Wits', 'Dres…ing yourself', and 'Working Out for Beginners'. Reward: New Title: Bare Minimum.

...title?

In answer your question, the scrawl begins. "'Titles' are a way of showing off all that you've accomplished in the world of Elemental! They're the reward for unlocking very specific achievements! To use a title just activate it from your main menu, and it will be displayed in conjunction with your name! You can only have one title active at any time, so choose carefully!"

That just leaves you with more questions! You find the title option in the main menu easily enough, but when you click on it, you don't see any changes. Nothing at all seems to happen around you. When you glance above your head, where a title might float if this was a real video game, there's nothing but blank sky, and no one else seems to see it either!

It really bugs you. So far, the game's mechanics seem pretty straight forward. This is the first thing that hasn't really seemed to jive with your understanding of the world around you. If you can't see your title, does that mean there's an option you should find to display it? Can other people see it and your friends just aren't high level enough? Who would those other people be? Can the Hokage see it?

You puzzle over those questions for a long time and do everything you can to figure out the answers, but no one seems to be able to see your new title. You would work more on it but you only have so much time in the day. But if you weren't distracted and by something big it would probably still be eating at you.

Thankfully, the big distraction comes at the start of the second marking period. You're allowed to change seats for one, allowing you to abandon the terrified looks of Ren, the creepy laughter of Kairi, and the sleep in human form that is Shikamaru for your own friends. You wind up in the second row between Jabari and Ino, behind Yui, and one seat over from Sakura.

But that's not the big distraction. That would be the first lesson that Iruka-sensei gives you the day you change seats. "Alright class!" he says as everyone gets settled. "I hope you're happy with your new partners because you won't be allowed to change them until next semester! We'll be too busy to keep doing this."

"Ahhhh!" Naruto screams from the back corner, pointing wildly at Iruka-sensei. "No! No! No!" he declares. "I will not let you say anything else about history! We're gonna learn cool ninja things now and-"

A piece of chalk to Naruto's head cuts him off, allowing Iruka-sensei to reclaim the floor. "Actually, you're right!" Iruka-sensei says brightly as if he wasn't just interrupted. "Today, we're going to start learning 'cool ninja things'. More specifically…"

Iruka's hands twist into a seal and a blue spark lights in his hands. It flickers once, twice, before growing into a globe of light the size of his fist. "...how to tap into your Chakra."

"But some of you might be wondering 'what is Chakra?'. You see, it's…"

A diagram is pulled down, and Iruka-sensei begins his lecture on the makeup of Chakra. Unlike his usual lectures it's over quickly, and you're onto practicing hand seals. You're just working on getting the right form for now; you assume working on speed comes later.

Once Iruka-sensei seems confident that all of you have the seals down, he continues. "Now, I want you to focus. I want all of you to have your hands form whatever seal feels the most comfortable for you, and I want you to close your eyes. Focus on the beating of your heart and the breath coming into your lungs…"

Iruka-sensei's voice takes a mantra-like quality. All around you, people start listening to him. Ino smirks at you and shapes the bird. A matching blue spark glows in her hand. She's not the only one; all the clan kids are just as quick. Sasuke uses the tiger, Shikamaru the rat, Kiba the dog…

You can't let yourself be psyched out by them and their head start though! You need to learn how to tap into your own chakra, not watch them do what they already know how to do! You let out a deep breathe, focus on Iruka-sensei's words, close your eyes, and form your hands into…

What hand seal do you use to focus your chakra?

Well looks like we hit some of my targets, though a shame we could not pull in Sasuke or Hinata. Yui and Jabari will make things interesting though, and we can always expand our friend circle over time. Also we are up to 500 XP floating, it would be 400 XP to level up chakra control if we want to go that route.

Done!

Nice! Take another 100!
You put 40 XP into manipulation, it should have been 50 taking it to 200 and the practiced level.

Edit- oh that 40 was from earlier, now it would be 240 total.

Sounds about right, depending on the color of our future jumpsuit we can call ourselves "[insert color] Dragon of Konoha". Then again Rock Lee called himself the Blue Beast or somesuch, so I'm a little confused on how that happened...
