Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

Secret Father by Katsuragi
@Vesvius

You are Hatake Kakashi, and you are not a man that's used to being approached. Quite the opposite, in fact. Why, the only person that dared to approach you was Gai. Or Anko, on the rare occasions she was without another person to drink with. It was usually a futile attempt to tease out what was under your mask, but she was 100 years too early to manage to see underneath the underneath.

...No. You were distracting yourself. Surely, if you continued to read your book, the tiny academy student that hadn't learned one of the most important social lessons Konoha had to offer (You did not bother Kakashi) would either get bored or take the hint and move along.

So you read.

And waited.

And read some more.

She did not move, she just continued to stare at you with those eyes. Those eyes that you could swear were digging into your soul.

So you read.

She pulled out a notepad and started jotting some things down.

You read some more.

She started doodling.

...her art was quite good.

You read some more, and she continued to draw, while not moving her gaze away from your face.

Had she blinked yet?

You don't think she had.

Does she blink?

Finally, you can take those eyes no more, and you close your book. "Yes?"

She finally, slowly, blinks, not breaking eye contact other than the agonizingly painful closing and opening of her eyes.

"You are Hatake Kakashi."

"...Yes."

She nods. "I have been told by many people that you are likely my secret father."

You have to take a minute to process that. Judging by her age and...

"I am not." You say firmly.

"Of course you are not." She winks at you. It's as painful as her blinking. "You couldn't possibly be my secret father."

"..." Was this really happening right now? Did someone put her up to this? It wasn't a Gai plot. Gai didn't do plots. This was a Genma plot if he'd ever seen one.

"Why do you believe I am your secret father?" You finally manage.

"Several reasons. Your hair."

You look at her black hair, which contrasts sharply against her ghostly appearance, and wait for the world to make sense.

"Black is a dominant trait. Which means the silver is recessive. Which makes perfect sense for my secret father."

This can't possibly be happening right now.

"Also, I inherited your hobbies."

You didn't really have many hobbies. You actually didn't have any hobbies, really. You worked, you trained, you read your books, and you occasionally found time to fail Genin teams. You supposed looking at it from the outside, that could be considered a hobby. You're not sure how she's been doing that though.

"I don't think you've been failing any genin teams."

"I have not." She pauses. "Yet. I shall add that to my list of things to do."

"Which hobbies..." You ask, a slight sigh of defeat.

"I am a connoisseur of all things erotica."

Oh, that made much more sense. You wouldn't really call it a hobby, more of a lifestyle really. But you could see how one might make that mistake and...

Oh. No. No no no.

"I also produce such works."

No no no.

"I notice you have the latest Ichi Ichi. It's not to my tastes, as I prefer the pure love that is two boys, but the writer is excellent and I have studied them extensively to increase my own skills."

You take a slight step back. Hatake Kakashi you might be, unashamed to live your lifestyle in public, but you even you drew the line at discussing tastes in erotica with pre-teens.

"I was planning on doing a special issue for the student newspaper. Do you think I could convince Gai to..."

Absolute not. Done. So done.

A few moments later the shadow clone you'd left behind when you'd drawn on your skills to escape the situation popped. Unfortunately letting you catch the tail end of that conversation which wasn't something any amount of brain bleach was going to clear. Posing with Gai in those youth suits of his and holding hands?

You shudder, and make a note to avoid all contact with her in the future.

…...................

Epilogue: "Fail."

The Hokage sighed. "Kakashi, you haven't even met the team yet."

"Fail."

The old man glared at him. "Naruto, Sasuke, and Kairi are nearly a perfect match in skill sets for this team and you could certainly help all of them..."

"They fail."

The hokage put down his pipe, his expression very serious. "Jounin, you will go there and you will give them a fair test."

Kakashi paused, and then sighed. "The...girl makes me uncomfortable."

The Hokage frowned slightly. That was unusual for Kakashi. "How so?"

"...she approves of my choice in reading, and wishes to engage in conversation on the subject."

The Hokage nods slowly and picks up a pipe before taking a long drag. The world is nothing but silence for a few moments before he exhales. "Hinata, then?"

"Fair test."

"Good. I can make that switch work. I expect you to give them an honest one this time though, not just one you can justify."

"...fine."

So this one took way, way longer than it should have to actually write, but hey, it's done now.
Without further ado, I give you:
CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENT - AUTHORIZED PERSONEL ONLY

FROM THE DESK OF SARUTOBI HIRUZEN, THIRD HOKAGE OF KONOHA

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE 63RD GRADUATING CLASS OF KONOHA NINJA ACADEMY

INSTRUCTOR: UMINO IRUKA

TEAM 1:
MEMBERS: TAO ITSUO, ITO TOBIO, EGUICHI FUKI
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: TENMODAI KABEMORI
SPECIALIZATION: SABOTAGE

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: Tobio and Fuki are both somewhat lacking in direct combat skills, and while Itsuo is capable of holding his own in a pitched battle, his true talent lies in his surprising knack for Fuuinjutsu. Fuki, meanwhile, is more than capable of moving about unnoticed, both in a crowd and in the wilderness. Finally, Tobio's skill at trapping is a force to be reckoned with when he is given adequate preparation time and supplies. My recommendation is that the three be formed into a saboteur squad who focus on stealthily destroying enemy infrastructure, fortifications, and supply lines where necessary.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: The three students certainly have potential as saboteurs, however, sabotage is not currently a high priority skillset for Konoha (although it may become so in the near future, depending on how the political situation with Iron and Cloud develops). To this end, Team One will be led by Jounin Tenmodai Kabemori, who has experience in Fuuinjutsu, traps, explosives, and most pertinently logistics and fortifications. With some time to develop, Team One will hopefully develop into a powerful strategic asset to control the flow of large scale conflict. During peace-time the team will be given missions relating to urgent infrastructure projects, disaster relief, and demolition of hostile listening posts within Land of Fire territory.

TEAM 2:
MEMBERS: DATE IZUMI, UEDA ARATA, IWAMOTO KYOKO
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: HYUUGA HOHETO
SPECIALIZATION: INVESTIGATION

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: While all three members are capable in direct combat, frankly put, that is not where their talents lie. Izumi is exceptional when it comes to deductive reasoning, second only to Nara Shikamaru in this year's class. Arata, meanwhile, suffers from a chronic tendency towards mild paranoia (on a personal note, I think it has more to do with the fact that Arata is particularly credulous and creative with his conspiracy theories, rather than a genuine fear or non-specified feeling of persecution). That said, despite the fact that Arata's theories sound far-fetched, more often than not they have some element of truth to them, and we have had to subtly steer him away from several potential security breaches in the academy. I'm not sure where he gets his ideas, but the kid's intuition is surprisingly sharp, if difficult to follow at times. Finally, Iwamoto Kyoko was easily the highest scorer in the academy's perception-based metrics, this despite having no significant bloodline to assist in doing so.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: While few teams graduate out of the academy directly into an investigation specialty, the ones that do almost invariably contribute a great deal to the village, therefore I will tentatively agree to Team Two's classification. In order to improve the team's general combat readiness and survivability, Team Two will be led by Hyuuga Hoheto, an investigative specialist himself (if nothing else, his demeanor would certainly benefit from having someone to teach). A recommendation will be given to Hoheto that he focus on anti-ambush countermeasures and to help Iwamoto Kyoko refine her perceptive abilities. Team Two will be given missions related to internal security and as support for law enforcement forces within the Land of Fire and allied territories.

TEAM 3:
MEMBERS: TAKAGI HASEO, TAKENAKA MINORU, HIRATA AMI
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: AKIMICHI SUTEKI
SPECIALIZATION: FIELD DEFENSE

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: Haseo and Ami are both quite good in combat, and while Minoru is otherwise exceptional, he has an unfortunate tendency towards low mobility. Normally, this would be a fatal flaw for a Shinobi in combat, but Haseo is particularly talented in creating rapid field fortifications and controlling the battlefield with his traps and admittedly limited earth jutsu, and can reduce enemy options for mobility. Ami meanwhile is an expert in ranged weaponry to further pin down and herd enemy combatants towards Minoru. With the help of his teammates, Minoru changes from a sitting duck on the battlefield to a defensive force to be reckoned with.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Most shinobi battles have a tendency towards skirmishing and high mobility. That said, Iwagakure more than proved the effectiveness of field fortifications during the last war. We'll likely never catch up to them in terms of the effectiveness of our own defensive structures, but even a few would have made a great difference. It goes without saying that having such a team would also help our own shinobi more effectively train against enemy fortifications as well. In order to fully leverage the potential of this team, Akimichi Suteki will be the Jounin in command, and will be given instructions to train his team in the rapid creation and dismantlement of field fortifications, as well as how to effectively retreat to avoid being pinned down within their own fort. Team Three can expect to be assigned escort and security missions all across the elemental nations.

TEAM 4:
MEMBERS: KAWAGUCHI TAKAHIRO, KIMURA GORO, TSUDA AKARI
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: YAMANAKA MOMOKA
SPECIALIZATION: INFILTRATION

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: Of these three students, only Akari can be considered proficient in direct combat. That said, the talents of these students lie in infiltration. Takahiro is a surprisingly talented social manipulator for any level of Genin, let alone a newly minted one. He also has the curious tendency to somehow end up in otherwise restricted areas seemingly by accident. The nature of these 'accidents' is belied by his purposeful action when he finds himself with access to sensitive materials, such as when he managed to sneak into the grades and records room of the Shinobi Academy to revise several of his tests to have near-perfect scores without being caught, earning him the 11th spot in the class rankings. Kimura Goro is somewhat less suave, and tends to rely on more conventional stealth, relying on not being seen or heard, rather than on being unnoticed. While he never quite managed anything quite as brazen as Takahiro, this was more for lack of motivation than talent, as he had a tendency to execute pranks within the classroom through stealth, then avoid repercussions by framing even the most unlikely of his classmates. Finally Tsuda Akari's talent is best exemplified by her ability to seamlessly blend with just about every group within the academy, changing her behavior and mannerisms from minute to minute as she flitted between social groups. Her skill as an infiltrator is also augmented by her mastery of the Henge and her talent at both lockpicking and stealth.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Team Four appears to be a promising, if yet untempered, infiltration squad. While their talents for infiltration have received particularly high praise from instructors, they lack the combat skill necessary to escape should their cover be blown. Furthermore, all three members have demonstrated a degree of emotional immaturity unacceptable for undercover operatives. Jounin Yamanaka Momoka will be tasked with nurturing this team to its full potential, both emotionally and physically. Team Four can expect a longer than average initial training period during which they will only be allowed D-Rank missions. Once they have demonstrated sufficient competence in combat and passed the standard battery of psychological examinations for undercover operatives, they will be assigned infiltration, security, and information gathering missions as the opportunity arises.

TEAM 5:
MEMBERS: HATSUMOTO HIDEKI, IGE YOSHIAKI, TAKAHASHI KASUMI
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: GENMA SHIRANUI
SPECIALIZATION: SKIRMISHING

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: All three members of this team have demonstrated significant talent in open combat, as well as a preference for skirmishing tactics. However, their repertoire of techniques and strategies remain somewhat limited. Hideki is perhaps the most proficient overall as far as basics go, but has demonstrated an unwillingness to innovate and adapt in combat, a fact which has kept him from achieving a higher class ranking. Yoshiaki has the opposite problem, in that he tends to focus on gimmicks and tricks overmuch without solidifying his basic principles first. When he succeeds, he does so with seemingly effortless grace as he outmaneuvers his opponent, but if his tricks are thwarted, he tends to find himself on the back foot no matter the enemy's fighting style due to his poor grasp of the basics. Finally, Kasumi is frequently held back due to her relatively poor physical condition in comparison to her classmates. A congenital defect exacerbated by a lack of exercise and medical attention has resulted in an otherwise promising kunoichi with an unfortunate lack of stamina. As a whole, the team is promising, but they really need someone to whip them into shape.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Team Five is a talented team let down by a significant lack of discipline and inspiration. While they certainly have the potential to be an exceptional skirmishing team, they need inspiration and the strength to pursue it. Personality analysis of the three students recommends a Jounin Sensei they might find 'cool'. Per the recommendation of Elite Jounin Maito Gai, Jounin Genma Shiranui has been identified as an ideal candidate due to his wide variety of skirmishing techniques, lack of prior assignment, and 'hip' attitude. Once Team Five is performing to Jounin Shiranui's standards, they may be assigned hostile suppression, patrol, pursuit, and a wide variety of other combat oriented and scouting missions all across the elemental nations.

TEAM 6:
MEMBERS: ITOU AKIO, UCHIYAMA HYOSUKE, NAKANO CHISAKO
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: KITARUKU RYUKO
SPECIALIZATION: COURIER

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: All three members of this team have only basic competence in combat, and lack special skills to make up for it when in contact with hostiles. That said, these three are among the fastest students in long distance travel to graduate this year, and have significant wilderness survival skills. Furthermore, they also demonstrate competence in cooperation and teamwork largely unseen amongst other graduating teams so far. While they will make an exceptional courier team for relatively safe missions, these students desperately need someone to train them in combat and encourage them to pursue supporting skills for their combat styles on their own.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Team Six is perhaps the most ready for C-Rank missions right out of the gate. However, this belies a significant flaw in their training, as they apparently lack anything more than the bare minimum of combat skills to graduate from the academy. Jounin Kitaraku Ryuko will be placed in command of this team and tasked with improving their combat skills, particularly in cooperative tactics. Furthermore, every member of Team Six will be required to demonstrate proficiency in at least one non-combat skill, until then, they will only be assigned D-Rank missions and C-Rank courier missions to locations within the interior of the Land of Fire. Only after completing these conditions will the restriction be lifted.

TEAM 7: HEAVY COMBAT
MEMBERS: SASUKE UCHIHA, UZUMAKI NARUTO, HINATA HYUUGA
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: HATAKE KAKASHI
SPECIALIZATION: HEAVY COMBAT

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: I have serious reservations about this team as listed. While every member of the team is competent in combat and has useful supporting skills, their interpersonal relations are an absolute mess. Sasuke can't stand Naruto and largely ignores Hinata. Naruto exhibits extreme feelings of inferiority in relation to Sasuke and thus constantly picks fights with him, and is incapable of talking to Hinata due to her extreme reaction to his presence. Hinata is too timid to countermand or argue with Sasuke and can hardly be in the presence of Naruto without stammering uncontrollably, occasionally losing consciousness when he gets too close. Despite the talents of every member of this team, I can't in good conscience recommend its formation as is. However, since I have been overridden on this team's creation, I can only say that the absolute top priority must be teambuilding and bonding.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: This team is something of a gamble on my part, I must admit. All three members of the team have significant interpersonal issues and have no close friendships within the village. If they do not manage to solve these issues and bond as a team, they will collapse, but if they do, I expect this team to be the single most promising and versatile team of this generation. I will be assigning Elite Jounin Hatake Kakashi as the commander of this team. This may seem odd, but it is my belief that the members of Team Seven will ultimately band together, and, in the process help Kakashi resolve some of his own long standing issues. As per Iruka's recommendation, Hatake is instructed to focus primarily on teambuilding and the creation of strong interpersonal bonds among team members. Once a sufficient level of team unity has been achieved, Team 7 can expect all manner of missions throughout the entirety of the elemental nations, with a focus on missions where combat is likely or where success is paramount but resources are limited.

TEAM 8:
MEMBERS: ABURAME SHINO, HIRUMA JABARI, HARUNO SAKURA
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: INUZUKA GAKU
SPECIALIZATION: PURSUIT

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: Team Eight is tailor made for harassment and long-distance pursuit. Shino's Aburame clan techniques form the backbone of this team, thanks to their ability to drain chakra and utility in marking pursuit targets. Jabari's skill in close combat combined with his fledgling chakra sense makes Team Eight a hard target to counter-ambush, and his tendency to analyze his foes as thoroughly as possible will help the team to develop effective strategies for when they do catch their target. Sakura meanwhile, exhibits a strong grasp of fundamental skills, a significant talent for chakra control and shape manipulation, and a surprising amount of stamina. While she largely acts as an element to round the team out at the moment, with the proper training she could either become the team's heaviest hitter or a medic who can sustain her teammates during battles of attrition.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Team Eight demonstrates a significant capacity for attrition focused combat. However, they lack many of the skills necessary for long-distance tracking or finding targets in the first place. In order to supplement their abilities in these fields and shore up their weaknesses, I will be assigning Jounin Inuzuka Gaku to lead this team. Gaku is a veteran in both short-range combat and long distance tracking, and has been looking to pass on his more conventional techniques to a Genin team for some time, making him the perfect candidate. Team Eight can expect to receive pursuit, investigation, and scouting missions in Land of Fire and allied territory.

TEAM 9:
MEMBERS: KOIZUMI SHINSUKE, YONEDA UNAGI, SHIRAI KAIRI
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: SHIMIZU AKON
SPECIALIZATION: SURVEILLANCE

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: While members of Team Nine demonstrate no particular flare for combat they are perceptive and show a certain talent for long term stealth. Kairi stands head and shoulders above the other two members of her team in stakeout skills, thanks primarily to her uncomfortably extensive experience in applying them. Shinsuke is somewhat lacking in practical skills, but makes up for it with his detailed understanding of the theoretical skills necessary to perform effective surveillance, including logistics, the creation of cover stories, and a knack for finding inconsistencies and clues in paperwork. Finally, Unagi seems to have a knack for eavesdropping and stealthily trailing targets, but is let down by his poor woodscraft.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Team Nine is in something of an odd position with regards to their skills. They are neither skillful enough in infiltration for a proper specialty, nor in wilderness survival and stealth to be a tracking or pursuit team. However, between their keen analytical and observational skills, they could make a promising long-term surveillance and investigation team. To that end, I will be assigning Jounin Shimizu Akon as their commander. As an expert in wilderness survival and stealth, he should be just the Sensei these students need to be able to apply their specialty more broadly. Team Nine will be given long term surveillance and counterintelligence missions within the Land of Fire and friendly territories.

TEAM 10:
MEMBERS: AKIMICHI CHOUJI, NARA SHIKAMARU, YAMANAKA INO
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: SARUTOBI ASUMA
SPECIALIZATION: LIVE CAPTURE

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: Similar to past iterations of the "Ino-Shika-Cho" team, Team 10 is a natural fit for live capture objectives. However, this iteration has a slight difference, in that Ino has developed a talent for close quarters combat with her kenjutsu to supplement her own clan jutsu, instead of the traditional option of ninjutsu or genjutsu. That said, I would recommend a particularly flexible Jounin commander, as it's likely this version of "Ino-Shika-Cho" will be rather different than former generations.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: Live capture teams are a disproportionately important part of Konoha military doctrine. It is incredibly important that this team have a commander with a wide variety of skills and techniques as well as a sufficiently hands-off attitude to allow each team member to determine the best skills necessary to optimize their teamwork. I will therefore select Elite Jounin Sarutobi Asuma, one of the most highly decorated and flexible Jounin this village has to offer. Team 10 can expect to receive a wide variety of combat missions, with a priority towards 'capture and retrieval', field interrogation, and non-lethal suppression missions.

TEAM 11:
MEMBERS: SATOMURA DAISUKE, INUZUKA KIBA, YOKOTA MARIKO
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: YUHI KURENAI
SPECIALIZATION: SEARCH & DESTROY

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: This is another team with potential teamwork issues. That said, all three members are socially well-adjusted; given a Jounin Sensei who will force them to take time to consider their words and actions, I believe their issues are not insurmountable. Mariko demonstrates significant aptitude for genjutsu and close range combat, but is somewhat wanting when it comes to tactics. Kiba has the opposite issue, he is skilled in a direct fight and can make his limited repertoire of skills stretch a long way, but lacks flexibility and could do with someone to help him broaden his horizons. Finally, Daisuke is both flexible and very effective in pitched battle, but is let down by his arrogance, which causes him to make poor decisions in combat. By placing these three together, I hope that they will be able to help each other shore up each-others' weaknesses and amplify their respective strengths.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: With two genjutsu users to disable foes, Satomura-kun's fledgling reconstruction of samurai techniques, and a tracking and combat specialist, Team Eleven appears to be an ideal candidate for Search and Destroy operations. I have selected Elite Jounin Yuhi Kurenai in order to best nurture the genin's fledgling skills at both using and detecting genjutsu. Team Eleven will be assigned hostile suppression, pursuit, and sabotage missions throughout the elemental nations.

TEAM 12:
MEMBERS: SHINSATO REN, FUJIWARA HIBACHI, HAZAKURA YUI
JOUNIN IN COMMAND: NARA REINA
SPECIALIZATION: RETRIEVAL

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES: I'm a little worried about the students I put together for Team Twelve. The idea was to foster understanding among the somewhat more social class-focused students, but between all three students' wildly differing backgrounds, this team might just fall apart from the get-go. That said, their skills really do complement eachother for a retrieval focused team. Ren is somewhat lacking in terms of conventional ninja skills, but growing up with no support structure and limited means has given him a certain desperate ingenuity and talent for misdirection. Hibachi is his exact opposite, he is conventionally skilled and familiar with ninja culture in the way only a child with two ninja parents can be. However, he consistently displays a lack of drive or direction, and seems to be a ninja solely because it is expected of him. Finally, Yui is a close relative of Hazakura Zaou, a major merchant within the Land of Fire (see subject case file 24201). She is certainly driven and displays a passion for the techniques that interest her, but regularly disregards entire subjects which she feels are below her.

HOKAGE'S NOTES: It appears that Team 12 has the beginnings of a particularly promising retrieval focused team. Two of the three members display significant skill in techniques useful in larceny and hostage retrieval, while the third has a good understanding of conventional tactics and stratagems. I will be assigning Jounin Nara Reina to this team, as she has a tendency towards creative solutions which may help each team member form a more realistic plan for their respective futures as shinobi. Team 12 can expect to receive a wide variety of item and personnel retrieval missions, as well as larceny missions throughout the Land of Fire and allied territories.

Brick-Chan by Katsuragi
@Vesvius

Composed on cellphone. Will clean up later.

And... I dont even know.

It's a warm summer night. The leaves rustle in the breeze and the pale moonlight illuminates the world around you. All of this sets the stage for the twack, twack, twack against your body.

One, two, three. Punch, punch, kick. The second punch was sloppy and certainly doesn't count but the other two were solid and fill you with a sense of pride.

The boy wipes the sweat from his brow and takes a minute to recover. Even for someone trained up like he clearly has thus far, hitting your rock solid form can be a testament in pain.

Still, shinobi aren't limited to the normal realms of man. They can move past something as mundane as "punch rocks and it hurts" and into shattering mountain sides with their fists.

Your siblings speak often of the boys mentor, the green beast, and his legendary feats of strength and endurance. His sheer prowess.

You feel something stir in you at the thought of the boy reaching such heights.

When it no longer causes him pain to strike you, you will see fit to add your strength to his like your lesser family and set him on his path to the next in line.

..........

It's a cool autumn night. The clouds cover the moon and it's illumination causing the surroundings to be that of a realm of twilight. The boy was late and he trains himself against you, but he's distracted. He takes breaks to work on other things like that sword of his.

You find yourself interested in those energy blades he seems able to conjure now but you're both sad and jealous he's not paying attention to you. Doesn't he know that you're waiting for him to overcome the challenges you've put before him?

That you're waiting for him?

.........

It's a very cold winter night and the moon is completely covered, casting the world in darkness. The boy has shown up well past his usual time after weeks of not showing up at all.

He goes through the motions, landing a few blows on your form, but hardly any of them mean anything. His heart clearly isn't in it and he mumbles to himself as he leaves.

Something about the stresses of the academy and what it takes to be number one.

A slave to his job already, and you, likewise, already left waiting for him. Will he ever show you proper attention, or is this all you can expect? All you deserve?

......

As spring turns into summer again, you find yourself still waiting.

But the boy never comes.

Mariko Plans a Party by Katsuragi
@Vesvius-

Mariko plans a party. Composed on cell, will clean up when I'm back at a pc in a few hours.

"Damn them, damn them all." You are Mariko, and to describe your current mood as less than thrilled would be a massive understatement. You were livid. Absolutely, positively livid.

Had the old man gone senile? Had the Hokage been forced to hold his position too long, the burden of the death of his successor and predecessor too much for him?

No, such thoughts were blasphemy, as much as the situation pissed you off. If the Hokage had truly lost it, there were much worse things in store for the village than your team assignment.

Even if it felt like things couldn't be much worse.

Kiba was bad enough. More wet dog than man, but he could be tolerable in his own way if you handled things right. Daisuke was a different story entirely.

The man responsible for the rift between you and your cousin.

She'd chose him all those years ago over you and things had just gotten worse from there.

That he wasn't... quite as bad as you had expected when you'd been forced to interact didn't change things. Much.

You'd expected him to run off to Ino's side, but he had manned up and come to meet and great with his team. He had even been... vaguely tolerable. If that's how things were going to be going forwards, you supposed you could manage.

You'd be pushing yourself hard though. Chuunin was a good way to break yourself out of this predicament. Daisuke and Kiba could be useful there, at least.

But you had to pass this final genin test or none of it mattered.

A party?

Begrudgingly, you trusted Daisuke to be able to figure things out on his end. A socialite mother would help there. Kiba...

What could you expect out of him?

The most important part of the test, in your mind, was to make sure no one brought the same things. Kiba would bring...snacks? Food of some kind. Meat probably. That seemed likely, so food was handled.

Daisuke, you had no idea. Him not being out of his element made this harder as it meant he knew what he was doing and thus he wasn't as predictable. You'd didn't know him well enough to guess at what he'd find to be the most important things to bring.

For you. Well. Seating was important. You didn't think either of the two others would think of that. And...fun was important too, right? Your family did a game night once a week, so there were some card games and a board game that were appropriate. You'd bring those.

Seating and games from you, meat probably from kiba, no idea what Dai was bringing.

You'd fidgeted slightly. What if he brought games too and ruined everything? Even now he was causing you problems by not having clear intentions.

Intentions, planning...

That was it!

You swallowed your pride down a bit. If you wanted to make sure everything went well you'd have to coordinate with the other two rather than trusting it to luck.

You couldn't expect them to do things themselves, but if you put yourself in charge of coordination...yes, this could work...

Kiba Plans a Party by Katsuragi
@Vesvius - kiba plans a party.

Composed on cell.

You are Inuzuka Kiba, genin. Never mind the test coming up. You'd pass that...you had to. No other choice. Inuzuka weren't not ninja, it just wasn't done.

What would you future be then, kennel work for the rest of your life? Taking care of other people's partners and future partners exclusively? Would they take Akamaru away?

The pup wines a bit, sensing your spike of distress.

No, Inuzuka bonded for life. You were fine there, but... no. You'd pass, you had to.

Think, think. How do you make a party awesome? You really needed to impress your jounin sensei.

You had it at once. Meat! Every party needed snacks, and the perfect snacks would secure the deal for you and your team. Perfect!

Dai would bring the drinks of course, and Mariko would bring the. Um. She would bring...you had no idea.

Still. Drinks and food was enough for any party.

...that didn't seem like enough.

Oh. Plenty for a party of course, but the party was just a test. What was it testing? It couldn't simply just be a party or she wouldn't have made a big deal out of it. And she sure as hell wasn't testing your ability to throw a party. You could see that maybe being a useful skill for very specific missions, but it wasn't the kind of thing that made or broke genin teams and the ability to be a ninja all together.

You frowned slightly and wracked your brain. Why would you make a bunch of genin throw a party together? What was she -really- testing for?

You glanced down at your partner. Together. Hm. Inuzuka had several tests for young, freshly bonded members that weren't directly related to bring shonobi. It was about making sure you could coordinate with your partners. Scavenger hunts, teaching them normal dog tricks, hide and seek, grocery shopping...

That was it! You slammed your hand against your fist. Coordination and team work. The friction in your group was obvious, and just like with disharmony between a man and his pup, you couldn't be a functional unit that way.

So if you couldn't work with your team mates, you were hardly a team. And then what good were you? You'd go out on a mission, have a bunch of infighting, and people would die at best and the mission wouldn't get completed at worst! So throwing a party, if you couldn't even manage that small bit of team work together there wasn't any hope for you! And where were you then?

Shuffled off to the genin corps with others that didn't make the cut or play well with others, of course.

You sniffed the air. "Akamaru, find Dai and drag him to meet up. I'll go find Mariko. Let's make this happen"

"Woof woof!"

And like that, the two of you were off. You had to work together to show you could pull this off...and probably at least look like you were enjoying the party.

The Secret of Kurenai by LockedMind
We talked with Pittauro on Discord and this idea was born. Sadly I couldn't do it justice, but I tried

The secret of Kurenai.

The spirit of Youth should be cultivated. That was one of the basic truths of the world. Thus when Gai, unrivalled master of Genjutsu and Taijutsu, met Daisuke, he began to teach him defying laws and traditions. In Gai's mind what would happen next was pretty straightforward - young man would graduate from the Academy and then Gai would become his jounin-sensei. But since truly youthful can't be bound by logic and plans, the unexpected occurence threw a wrench in his vision of future - he met another young man in need of training and guidance, one Rock Lee. Never the one for long deliberations, Green Beast decided to take the boy and his team under his wing.

Which caused some complications. Namely, laws, regulations and Hokage decided once again to throw themselves against YOUTH. "One jounin can't have two genin teams", - said Hiruzen to him on one fateful evening - "You must choose". But how one can make that choice when choosing one would mean abandoning other? The answer is one simply can not. He thought again and again about Hokage's words.

"One jounin can't have two genin teams"

"One jounin..."

"One..."

Of course! The answer was in the question itself all along. If one jounin couldn't have two teams, then Gai would have to become two to teach both of his protege. It was easier said than done, but Gai was no stranger to training and hard work. He labored for months and in the end created his twofold masterpiece. The first part was Kurenai - his special female shadow clone, who received all his skill in Genjutsu. The second one was subtle village-wide memory alteration, after which everyone was sure that Kurenai was always there and Gai was always just a Taijutsu master. There was only one man who could pierce the illusion and ruin his scheme - his eternal rival, Kakashi of the Sharingan. But when Gai went to him, ready to beg and promise, he realized that he underestimated strength of their bond. Indeed, it was stronger than steel! His rival wholeheartedly endorsed his idea saying "Whatever, less work for me"

There were imperfections, of course. He was unable to part with his sunset genjutsu, for example, for it was too important part of his identity. Likewise, it would be blasphemy to seal Daisuke's hard-won Genjutsu skills, so he only took memory of learning them from Gai. But all of that was insignificant compared to the end result - his ability to spread youthfulness unimpeded to both of his pupils at once, so he was content.

Bonus idea:
This wasn't the first split. First split was when man known as Kakashi, master of Ninjutsu, Genjutsu and Taijutsu with temperament of Gai decided to create a rival for himself since no one was strong enough for him. Something went wrong and Gai-clone received all youthfulness instead of just half. Now Kakashi is apathetic and doesn't like Gai's constant challenges very much, but can't be bothered to research the technique to reverse the split.

Ino Brings the Pain by Katsuragi
Also, outside of scope being that the vote is over. We'll just have to leave it to Dai and his Team to figure things out from here.

@Vesvius - Ino brings the pain, omake.

The feast laid out on the table was magnificent. An entire range of the culinary arts of this particular establishment, a rather good one, were spread out among them. Dumplings, chicken, meat skewers, pasta, bread sticks, a little bot of everything. It would have been quite the proper team meal, except it was entirely for one person. Well, besides the eggs sat in front of Asuma-sensei. But those were tiny portion of the table spread.

On hearing their new Jounin was footing the tab, Choji had ordered the menu. This might have been rude, except that's what he would have ordered anyways. Akimichi diets were partially subsidized by the village, and most of the rest by the clan itself, she knew. It was a small price to pay for the kinds of power they brought to the battlefield.

Shikamaru had his head resting in his elbows at his end of the table. Apparently this was going to be one of those days that he was too lazy to eat. Given his limited activity levels thus far in life, it wasn't like he needed the calories after all.

She smiled lightly. If she hadn't been so gung ho about her various diets over the years, she never would have gotten the nutrition lectures from Satomama. Unlike other, lesser girls her age, she could appopriately balance her intake and nutrition levels to her activity day to day. The end result being looking great while also not impacting her physical abilities.

She snorted. Stupid Mariko.

Asume cleared his throat and gave what looked to be an attempt at a welcoming smile. It was a bit strained though. Out of practice or forced? Hm. Maybe a bit of both?

"Congratulations on passing the academy test." He looked around the room, taking in Choji happily munching on food, Shikamaru sleeping, and herself likely scowling a bit at her current situation.

He cleared his throat. "Well, I was hoping we could start off with a bit of an introduction? I'm Sarutobi Asuma. I am 27 years old, and I hate scarfs."

She was still scowling about the situation and Shikamaru was still sleeping, which left Choji to finally take the hint. "Akimichi Choji!" munch munch. "I am 12 years old." Sluuuuurp. Munch. "I like my family's cooking."

Asuma nodded and turned his attention to Shikamaru. Silence for a few moments before Choji leaned over and proded his friend, who slowly stired. "Nara Shikamaru. 12. Clouds." And then he promptly seemed to go back to sleep.

Or at least he attempted to, before a dinner roll bounced off of his head. He sat up (Well, mostly sat up. It was more of a slouch than anything. He was paying attention at least, alright?!) and blinked warily in Ino's direction. A more astute observer may pick up the general thought of "so it begins." All Ino got was weary...resignation?

"I am Yamanaka Ino. Currently 13 years old" and she didn't radiate smug at being a bit older than the two boys, not at all. "And I enjoy pushing myself, being the best, and dragging everyone I assosiate along with me for the ride. Regardless of if they like it or not, I won't fall behind my rival." She smiled sweetly at the rest of the table.

Choji continued eating, oblivious, Shikamaru groaned and put his head back down, and Asuma just blinked and took a moment to process that.

He made the mental connection. "You were...one of Daisuke's friends, right?"

She glared. "His best friend, thank you."

"Right, yeah." He looked at the two boys with something approaching pity. "Hm. Well, if what I've heard from other Jounin was accurate, this would ordinarily be the point where I put some kind of test before you, generally to shore up whatever the most obvious weakness between you is, and threaten you with failure of being a ninja otherwise."

Shika....well, you already know how the run down with those two went. Ino snorted, but the feeling was more or less mutual between the three of them.

"And of course you three know that would be pointless. The Ino-Shika-Cho heirs being failed out? The old man would have my head, and you three would be getting a different jounin."

"Clan politics are fun like that." Ino smiled. "That speel might work on people who don't pay attention, but we all know the number of people that actually fail out of being a ninja after completing the academy are...virtually non-existent. Remedial lessons and the genin corps for those that truly don't make the cut are the end result. Still unlikely to be acceptable for us."

"Indeed, Ms. Yamanaka."

She shrugged. "Besides, I'd intentionally take a dive to get a more acceptable team, Choji is just along for the ride, and Shikamaru would keep failing over and over until either his family made failing more troublesome than being a ninja or they finally accepted a non-shinobi clan heir."

It was Asuma's turn to smirk. "If that were an option, Shikaku would definitely be the first non-shinobi Jounin commander on record."

That actually managed to draw a bit of disbelief from Ino and a mild pause in eating from Choji.

"What, you think we'd lose that mind to civilian work? Old man is to canny for that." He chuckled at his own joke, while Ino and Choji just shared a brief look.

"Anyhow, point is, failing you all isn't an option. Letting you fail isn't an option. I didn't really want a genin team, if we're being honest, but now I've got one that I'm basically stuck with. So here's a run down on how things are going to work. You can't fail, so you're not going to. I'm going to drive the three of you until you're the best you are in your class, and more than that. In a year, you'll either all be chuunin and out of my hair, or chuunin and competent enough that I don't mind working with you. I don't really care which."

Ino grinned. "Sensei, I think we're going to get along juuuuust fine..."

And Fire It's Teacher by FourMyleofCeres (canon)
@Vesvius -part three is here! (Also the tag a person drop down doesn't seem to be working for me. Anyone else having trouble?

Water Is The Mother of Tea,...
A Teapot Its Father,
...And Fire Its Teacher. ~Chinese Proverb
A proper tea ceremony takes at least a week to prepare. Which means you'd been nipping off to the compound to help when you could. Unlike the others, where you acted as a sort of informal host, here you were a student. If it weren't for your noble bearing(though ignoble birth), they likely wouldn't have been so willing to take you on.

If you weren't a genius, you'd still be just a guest. if that. They say it takes ten years to become a Teishu(Teacher/Host), but you would likely do it in five. There were nine major types ceremonies, and you had already lead one. Your ability to take your teishu's instruction from the subtlest hints did you credit. As did the effort you put in to the preparation.

You were there when they weeded the garden. You were there to clean. You brought ingredients for the sweets and meals, and cooked when you could. And you did it all without being asked, without being told. They would have been happy to take your money for years, especially thinking what they did of you. But you gave them more than money. You gave them time. It was true there were only so many hours in the day, but you were always able to squeeze more out of them than others.

Okeiko, of course, wasn't as stressful. The comparatively simple lessons were almost informal compared to Shoburo; when they pulled out the portable brazier in May. The speeches were no trouble to memorize and recite, of course. But it was long, and the act of carrying everything dragged on. It was a test of endurance.

Today however, would be your first asa-cha, your first Early Morning ceremony. Summer was starting and soon it would become too hot to do a mid-day lesson. You had been the Rookie of the Year in school, and so here too. You had displaced a member of the clan as the top student and would be the first assistant. No more lugging water.

Getting there in the early pre-Dawn hours, getting changed into more traditional clothing, and the rest was the easy part. Waiting, that was the hard part. Today's ceremony would be held in the room by the front gate, with the simpler utensils. Which was not to say they were cheap junk, simply that there was a more everyday atmosphere to it all. Smoked bamboo, rather than untreated. Things with some wear and character. It was still a step up from the side gates, which you were used to preforming at.

It was nice, made you feel important. Perhaps that's why you were so vigilant. Perhaps that's why you noticed the darkness in the bottom of the cups. At first you thought it was a stain, but they should not have been stained between your choosing them and today. A quick application of water removed it, but couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. A wet finger and a taste revealed that it numbed. Thanks to Anko-hime's twisted idea of Fun you were aware of this poison, and its effects. It reduced your senses slightly. It'd make the tea seem less bitter, true. But it'd also reduce ones ability to call on chakra for several hours, making it easier to assassinate someone later.

It was also a good way to teach a lesson to a young student such as yourself. Look underneath the underneath, and don't get too used to the script. It'd be mostly harmless to the guests, and they'd probably been warned. You were happy with the experience. You'd brought the sweets yourself, though you had the Akimichi prepare them. You'd ordered the flowers from the Yamanaka, and while Inoichi might have issues with you, he wouldn't risk his reputation over something so petty. Unless they asked super nicely.

So that left only the things at the Hyuga compound to distrust. And the guests, of course.

How were you to be tested, would you be tested further? Beyond the ceremony itself, of course?

With a muttered curse, you went to find the flower arrangements; keeping the sweets with you. You'd had the flowers delivered here the night before. Sure enough, someone had slipped some violets into the arangement. You checked the receipt... and the delivery slip. It happened here. You removed them and tossed them aside.

Violets contain ionones, which bind to the smell receptors, shutting them down for a time. It's the reason why the scent of violets seem to disappear and reappear, eternally fresh. And why the Inuzuka hate them. They were a good way to cause a pursuer to lose the scent... or prevent someone from detecting poison in their meal.

This was generally used to hide more offensive poisons than the one you washed out. In fact, either would be good at hiding a third. But surely your teacher would not go that far?

Soon, it was time for the ceremony. You were sure to hand the sweets directly to your teishu, to put in the bowl. This was all ritual, all memorization. Your movements were almost perfect. You inspected the tools as they were handed to you, although briefly, and did your best. Your only mistake was forgetting that you were at the Front Gate, which meant that you were supposed to leave a lake in the froth, but you correctly yourself the moment you heard your teishu utter the word in conversation.

The froth of your tea burnt with brilliance. The 'lake' allowed an unspoiled view into the cup and the leaves. The thin tea was your world for one unspoiled moment, and then you looked to the guests. Hinata was the third guest. Not the least important, but not the primary guest. She was also unpopular with the Elders. In fact, everyone but the primary guest was.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the assassination was real, and you were to be framed for it. You dispelled the thought from your mind, and continued the ceremony.

Afterward, while you were cleaning up you turned to your teishu with a smile. This would settle things one way or another. "Sensei, thank you for the simulated assassination. I have been getting ahead of myself, perhaps. It would have been humbling if one of my guests had gotten sick. The darker cups are, indeed, a reason to be wary."

He tilted his head. "Oh?"

You nod. "The treatment can hid a toxin so easily, one that would come off into the tea. Truly, I should watch out for the common place. A stain can be so much more. The untreated cups of the Back Gate would have been obvious. And with the set on display, it would have been much harder. Truly, familiarity and relaxation has its price."

His brow furrowed. "Is that all you learned?"

You shook your head. "Of course not. To delegate, as I had with the flowers, is also a weakness. Had I not been inspecting the arrangement, I would have missed the violets until it was too late to remove them. They would have lead to the guests missing the aroma of the tea... and anything that had been added to it."

The frown deepened. "I suppose that is all?"

You shrugged. "I had already changed into my nice clothes, so I did not check under the mats for anyone, though our guests would have spotted them. It would have been trivial to jab someone with a poisoned needle. But unless the chakra flow had been reduced, as I said, our guests would have seen them coming. Applying the toxin to whisk would have drawn the least scrutiny, however it only would have affected the Shoukyaku, unless there was a reservoir in the handle. That would have required a willing assassin to be doing the act, however. Not a cats-paw."

He stiffens, and you head off to get changed. While you're walking, you feel someone bump into you, and a weight in your sleeve. It wasn't uncommon to pass money or notes this way, once upon a time. You found the note, and read it while getting changed. Well, attempted to read it. You weren't familiar with this particular code. Oh well, to the library to study, you supposed. You did have the rest of the day ahead of you.

I hope this one was as good as the others. But you see what I mean about "I didn't have to think". Even the more relaxed tea ceremonies, like this one, are strictly by the book affairs. Coming up with something to make it interesting was a little difficult. But I tried to intigrate the traits I had and other Omakes to good effect. Anko's poison training, Consumable Connoisseur, Imperial Etiquette, My New Enemy's Modus Operandi Needs Intense Creativity, Refined Palate, and Sleep is for the Dead being the obvious ones.

Having to get up early, notice all this crap, and still be polite is quite a strain on anyone. Whether it was indeed a simulated assassination for a lesson or something real is up in the air. Also what that note is. I figured I'd give some hooks for whoever.

And yes, stabbing people in the thigh/ass/calf with poisoned needle delivered by a man under the floorboard is a time honored tradition in Japan. As is drugging someone so they can be injured in a "training accident".

Akamaru and the Tree Clan by Katsuragi (canon)
@Vesvius -

Composed on Cell.

Akamaru and the tree clan omake.

The air was crisp and clear, the sun warming the world. It was mostly the air that made you happy, though. You could smell for miles and miles like this, and there weren't any overwhelming smells distracting you like there were sometimes back at the academy.

You wagged your tail in contentment as you barked an expression of happiness at your human as you took him for a walk to meet with his sub pack.

The Elders had explained to you how such things worked. The large forest den you and the humans lived in was the big pack, your family and partner humans were your family pack, and the small units of non-famly members your partner operated with were the sub pack, and we're to be treated accordingly.

You liked them. The elder smelled nice and gave good head rubs. The younger bitch kept your partner on his toes, which he needed, and the other male was strong. You would prefer if your partner was the alpha, but everyone must slot into the pack where they belong, not where they wanted to. Still, things hadn't formed just yet, so you waited for dynamics to settle.

Your attention at the moment was only on that to a cursory degree today, however, as more immediate concerns were attracting your attention.

Squirrels were massing in the nearby trees, plotting something. The tree rodent clan of the village were always plotting something, but they were generally harmless to you or your packs. They knew better.

You'd detected their sent on the other male occasionally, and knew from your partner that somehow they had earned his ire.

It was amusing to see them waging a war with each other, but it was time for that to stop. He was part of your pack now, which meant that he was outside the scope of what the tree clan was allowed to interfere with.

You barked at the trees, a light rebuke of reminder and warning, and your parner stopped and looked, sniffing at the trees.

"Just some squirrels, Akamaru, nothing to worry about."

You licked his hand to assure him you knew what you were doing. He shrugged and continued on towards the meeting site.

The tree clans paused in their efforts for a few moments, chattering amongst themselves, before they went back to what they were doing.

Had they misunderstood?

You barked again, a bit sharper this time, and your partner paused again. "...don't tell me Dai's madness has gotten to you too boy?"

You ignored him for the moment, much as the tree clan ignored you and continued on.

Your hackles started to raise a bit, and you growled at the tree line.

They were dismissing you. Was it because you were young? Did they think they could get away with this? Regardless of your age, the ancient treaties between your clans forbid them from antagonizing those belonging to your own.

You let out a slight whine of suprise as you felt something hit your head and bounce off. You glanced down to see an acorn rolling away from you.

Your partner didn't fail to notice it as well and glanced back at the trees with a bit of a growl of his own before looking back at you and nodding.

"Well buddy. I don't really care what Dai has going on with these things." He points at the acorn. "But fuck that. This means war huh?"

You bark an affirmation. The Elders would hear about this. In the mean time, you needed to remind the tree clan they existed in peace at your leasuire. Perhaps you would have a chat about the matter with the elder feline when the opprotunity presented itself later...

...................

Kiba and Akamaru arrived at the team meeting a few minutes late. Kiba's jacket was slightly torn and the pups fur ruffled and in some places lightly singed.

Daisuke raised an eyebrow. "Squirrels?"

Kiba growled. "Fucking squirrels."

Mariko sighed with exasperation. This was her life now.

Manami's Empty Nest by Katsuragi (canon)
@Vesvius

Manami adapts to a (not so) empty home:

"...he's gone, Anko. Goooone." Manami whines, drowning her sorrows in alcohol as was her want to do.

Anko sighed. "Manami, he's just meeting his team for the first time today. He's been out of the house for less time than if he was going to class..."

"You don't get it." She continued to cry. "My baby boy is all grown up now. A man, and now he's gotten a job and will be going on missions and I'll see him less and less and next thing you know he's going to be married and moving out!"

"...you do realize it's going to be a while still before he's even sent out of the village on a mission?" Anko asked with a hint of exasperation.

"That's not the point." Manami sniffed. "It's the beginning of the eeeeeend!"

"By that logic." Anko said with a slight grin. "The beginning of the end was when he was born."

Manami blinked and stared at Anko before tears started gathering in her eyes. "Existential dread, everything is over before it even begun. Truly, my little boy graduating has taught me the futility of life as everything crumbles to ash and dust with time."

Anko's grin grew. "Yup! And that's why..." She leaned in and whispered. "Trade secret, mind you. That's why...we drink. To deal with the futility of it all."

Another sniff that only paused when Manami took a large drink from her glass.

"Aaaaand. You know that the whole moving out and getting married leads to...grandchildren, right?"

There was a large pause then, as the existential crisis Manami was going through went to war with those hollowed words, struggling for dominance. Slowly, a smile started to spread on her face as the eventual prospect for grandchildren won out over the realization of the futility of life.

Her tears dried and she leaned back, her posture and demeanor returning to their ordinary regal state. "Indeed. Grandchildren."

Anko nodded. "Yup! Your little boy is turning into a man, which means in a few years he can do his duty as your kiddo and present you with grandchildren to dolt on."

"Hmmm. Yes, of course." Manami smirked. "And they shall be the most adorable, talented grandchildren, as fitting of my son. And I shall spoil them rotten and he shall have to deal with the consequences, as nature intended."

"You've got it!" Anko exclaimed with good cheer. "All is right in the world!"

"Still. Though. With his increasing independence, I'll be finding myself with significantly more free time. My little bird is leaving the nest so it wouldn't be right for me to continue to carry his burdens."

"That's...a difficult one. Spend more time with people?"

Manami weighed that. "The people I actually care for are ninja. I likely already spend as much time with you as is reasonable."

Anko shrugged. "True true. Hobbies?"

Manami snorted. "Hardly. Spending more time on hobbies are for my lessers."

"Of course." "Hmm...Tough tough. Well, I suppose you'll have to fall back on the tradition of devoted mothers everywhere when their kids leave the nest then."

"And what's that?" Manami replied with a raised eyebrow.

"A career, of course."

"I do suppose with my little man out in the world, it would be good to reapply myself to being productive in other ways...

"The question is." Anko replied, swirling her drink around. "What career would that be?"

"You know, given my background and skill set... I think I have just the one."

…...............

Daisuke arrived home that night to find a note pinned to the refrigerator. "Dearest Son, I shall be home late tonight, and likely most nights going forwards. As you are now a young man taking on more responsibilities, I've deemed it time to begin on a career life once more. I trust you to handle the Independence and responsibility that being a pre-adult entails to better get you ready for your later life. As such, I've left a list of chores for you to handle and have left your laundry untouched. I also trust that you can handle your dinners going forwards. Love, your Mother."

...he...he had to make his own dinner?

He was doomed.

360exp from earlier and 40 of whatever I get from the two omakes since last round up to Linguistics.

The rest to travel.

Keeping that bard train rolling.
