Okay so I was talking to a friend of mine and somehow the conversation came around to elves, and he kept insisting that elves are dumb, and I didn't really think that was the case, but neither of us actually personally know any elves IRL, so I figured I would just... ask the Verified Elf who hangs out in the same parts of the forum I do.

No, no, it's fine. I doubt I could've broached the topic any better, honestly. So your friend said that "elves are dumb"? What's his evidence?

Well, one example that came up a lot was this story of an elf soldier who just couldn't win at rock-paper-scissors, even though the human soldier was just cycling through them in order. Was that real?

Ugh, that story. Yes, that happened, but that was one guy. Most of us are, in fact, capable of basic pattern recognition.

To be fair though, there definitely is a pattern of humans and elves thinking differently.
I've spent some time around human mages and soldiers, and from personal experience I'm about 93% sure humans learn backwards.

Do nothing comparatively.

Put it this way: the Empire has revamped its industrial system in-depth something like seven times in the last decade to integrate new improvements we derived from you guys. Earth still has civil systems in place that have been outdated and obsolete for centuries, that you're only now looking at updating.

Basically humans acquire knowledge freaky fast by elf standards, but integrate knowledge at the pace of a dubiously animate snail.

Hence, "learning backwards", because the emphasis in the human learning process is flipped from where it is in an elf's.

On Dragons
On Dragons And Why You Don't Fuck With Them

At their base, Dragons are free-floating spirits/souls that gather mana to themselves over a extraordinarily long period of time. After enough power is accumulated (mana-rich areas and such adding boosts to the growth process and cutting down the time required) they eventually hook themselves into the laws of reality. After first forming, a Dragon tends to be very weak and significantly vulnerable to virtually any kind of damage, but that weakness fades quickly once they actually manage to start rolling.

Mostly because once they start rolling they kind of snowball.

The foundation of a Dragon's Existence is an internal World Sphere (think a solid actualized Reality Marble ala Nasuverse) that they use to subvert the local reality around them. This causes them to be the natural predator of Divine Beings, mostly because as a Dragon hangs around the area and their World Sphere continues to subvert the local reality, they straight up eat any divine beings that tend to not be strong enough or mobile enough to get the fuck out of dodge. If a Dragon "eats" enough reality or Divine Beings, it can 'rank' up for a lack of a better phrase into a greater form.

Which in turn comes with the fact there are four "classes" of Dragons; Lesser, Regular, "Flightless", and Grand.

Lesser Dragons, also commonly referred to as Wyverns, are the smallest and weakest forms a Dragon can take. Size-wise they average about three times the size of a horse, tend to be about as bright as a particularly dumb dog, and very little in the way of esoteric mojo aside from strong natural defenses and a powerful breath weapon of some kind. The problem is their breath weapon is usually comparable in power to Genos' flamethrowers from One Punch Man (or Mr Just-Flamed-A-Plateau-Into-A-Valley). Looks-wise, Wyverns tend to be the four-limbed variety of dragons. Think Harry Potter or Game of Thrones.

Regular Dragons, the most common type and most likely one for you to run into, are usually the size of an average "american" house. They're normally smarter than a child, but have an instinctual mastery of magic that can put professional wizards to shame. You'll like be able to run rings around one tactically, but never get in a battle of mojo against one otherwise it'll spank you like a Korean Finalist at a Starcraft 2 Tournament vs a noob. The main reason Regulars are the most common type of dragon though is that it's several orders of magnitude easier to go from being a "useless" wyvern to being a big badass Regular then it is to go from being a big badass Regular to being a Fuck Off Greater.

Greater Dragons, or better known as "Flightless" Dragons, Are large enough to easily be mistaken for mountain tops or even large hills on their own. When a Dragon reaches this level, their wings re-merge with their forelimbs in such a way that it's reminiscent of flying squirrels than a wyvern. It is also at this level they become less "spell users" and more "force of nature". You wouldn't be wrong with comparing one to an actual natural disaster such as an avalanche or volcanic eruption. Also, it's easy to forget (mostly because of the way their wings mutate and how huge they become) that they can still fly, even at this level. And it's also a good thing you're more likely to run into a group of divine beings sitting at your table playing poker than you are to run into one of these guys because at this point is also when they can start using their World Sphere powers to their literal fullest. Think something capable of warping reality around it casually; "you are now on fire because I said so" or "and thus the castle-melting fire breath was also Gae Bolg". If you're on the same battlefield as a Greater Dragon and you're not some kind of god-slaying badass of mythic proportions then you've fucked up beyond reason.

Grand Dragons, also known as God Dragons among other titles, are... well... godlike in their power. The best off-the-cuff description one can get would be Shenron from Dragonball. As in "this happens because I said so, and you can't do shit about it". Not really much more to say there aside from a determined one has been known to be capable of literally cracking planets apart when pissed off. As for how rare... in the entire history of Earth's existence there has only ever been two of these guys in the LDC. The first one... migrated through and fucked off somewhere and no one has a clue where, and the other got fed up with someone and tried hiding in the "dead zone" and gave Gaia a heart attack.

The Last Dragon sighted in the LDC was some five thousand or so years ago. It harassed the Thirteenth Hell but shit happened.

Other than that the most notable Dragons that have been recorded in LDC history were a Time Dragon, Fire Dragon, Ice Dragon, Light Dragon, Courage Dragon, and a Strength Dragon. There were others, but those are the most significant.

The Grand Time Dragon and Greater Fire Dragon both wound up on Gaia, who in turn somehow managed to kill both of them. Though, she has no real idea how she managed to kill the Time asshole (it involved a meteor and a lot of dead dinosaurs), while the Fire Dragon was fed to Human Dragonslaying Myths.

The Ice Dragon tangled with the Elvin Empire, costing one of their earliest colonies to kill but also proving the power of Elfscalibur.

The Fairies ate the Light Dragon. Don't ask how. Please.

The Courage Dragon ended up in the home realm of the Children of Nightmare. They did... something to it, and no one ever saw it again. You can probably guess from there.

And the Strength Dragon got into a fight with Hell. The exact details surrounding that battle are kind of slurried considering only a handful of fighters made it back alive and there were a lot of contradictory rumors around it afterwards.

Each faction has their own ways of combating Dragons available to them, but none have really been used since the last dragon fucked off.

Elvin Empire
-Fine Dei Draghi: Also known as Elfscalibur. You know that second Grand that migrated through and fucked off? Well, it left bits and pieces of itself behind: shedded scales, claws, teeth that fell out when it outgrew them, so on. The Elvin Emperor of the time had the brilliant idea to gather up as many of those bits and pieces together as he could manage and commissioned his greatest artificers to fashion a weapon out of them. The result was a sword best described as a "crystallized World Sphere in Blade Format". For all intents and purposes the weapon is an entirely self-contained reality that empowers it's wielder with the echos of the Grand Dragon's World Sphere: the Aspect of Reversal. While not only turning a weak wielder powerful, or a powerful foe weak, it also allows the user to act within the range of another World Sphere without being subjected to the changed laws of reality that would otherwise hinder them.

False Heaven
-Archangels: Truth be told it was the existence of the Dragons that lead to the creation of the first Archangels. Being literal Avatars of Light, they are capable of resisting the effects of World Spheres that Dragons put out, though not to the same degree that having a World Sphere of their own would. The difference though is that Heaven can field a relatively large number of Archangels in comparison to the Empire's single sword, or the Fairies' Cannon.

Fairy Home Realms
-The Ray of Light: Also known as the largest, most powerful magical cannon in the LDC. Housed on the Fairies' original Homeworld and fueled by massed graves in the hundreds of billions, this thing is fully capable of doing the impossible: namely overwhelming a Dragon's World Sphere via raw magical output. Hell, if this thing is aimed badly it would even put a hole through the fucking moon. The drawback though is that each firing of the weapon consumes an entire graveyard: millions of dead gathered over thousands of years. A price that is not easy to pay in practical terms, let alone cultural. The upside though? It's more or less guaranteed to one-hit-kill anything short of a Solar Divine Being and remains as the monument to why no one has ever had the balls to try hitting the Fairy Homeworld directly. No one wants to risk this thing being aimed at them.

Thirteenth Hell
-Lucifer Tesseract: The core being and functional leader of Hell, the Tesseract is a kind of quasi-divine being that is more an arranged set of rules that dictate how Hell functions more than being an actual thing. One of the things it does is crush World Spheres that don't follow its pre-existing rules. Something that doesn't agree with Dragons at all. Strong enough dragons can resist long enough to flee to another dimension, but that's really all they can do.

Dark Star
-Singularity Point: A kind of defensive structure that was originally made at the start of the Fairy-Dark Star war that just happened to also be really good at dealing with Dragons. It's... pretty much a black hole generator that is only good at firing off in-dimension and the adjacent dimensions. Short ranged, but not a lot of things can survive having a micro black hole form ontop of them. Sadly though it's really slow to fire and easy to disable if you know about it. Which the DS kind of hate because they can't move it or fix that problem. Something the fairies take advantage of regularly.

Akashic Pillar
-Magical Girls: I know you all saw this coming. Being heavy-weight existences themselves, Magical Girls can actually resist Draconic World Spheres a lot better than other mortals can. Some can even directly lock down a Dragon's World Sphere if they just so happen to have the right Affinities to counter it (for example Goddess Gold would completely lobotomize a Life Dragon, rendering it helpless) or allow their allies to resist the World Sphere as well.

-The Answerer: The ultimate in "fuck that guy in particular, accept no substitutes". Not only really effective at blowing the faces off nosy Divine Beings, these magically enhanced nukes are also more than capable of simply outright annihilating Draconic opponents. Something that Gaia really loves considering her own experiences. To say nothing of how many they'll be able to field abroad in the future.

Aside from all this though, is that Dragon World Spheres carry with them several extra effects that aren't normally found on their sheets in the form of "battlefield modifiers". Namely, they actively weaken affinities that don't align to their own while being highly resistant to damage from those that do. (For example an Ice Dragon would make Fire Magic around them impossible while being resistant to Cold.) There are ways around this (as outlined above in several parts) but it is a very large hurdle to overcome. Another thing is that with age comes the ability to re-stabilize their World Spheres during combat, which comes in the form of regeneration. Young Dragons can get anywhere from a 5% to 10% regen on their health, while really ancient Grand Dragons can literally reset at the start of each turn.

Things to keep in mind there.

LDj's Generic Abilities Index
LDj's Generic Abilities Index

So, as I'm sure most of you know, there's a big ol' list of all the weapon abilities and what they do out there, maintained by yours truly. Recently, however, it's been brought up that there's no such collected reference for the standardized personal abilities, I.E. the ones like Flight and such that aren't just exclusive to one person or a small group. Time to fix that.

Flight:
Flight
Level X
-[Character] is able to fly at [(X-1)*10] mph.
Basic Flight, one of the most common personal abilities out there. Flight speed scales a little oddly, because Level 1 calculates out to a flight speed of 0, and what's the point of 0 MPH of flight? In practice, however, Level 1 flight restricts you to roughly a walking pace.
Flight also has a rarer upgraded form called Boosted Flight:
Flight (Boosted
Level X
-[Character] is able to fly at [(X-1)*10] mph. ([Character] is capable of creating magical platforms mid-air that they are capable of pushing off of, or using to arrest their movement when necessary.)
Boosted Flight's primary advantage is that it really just doesn't give a shit about momentum or inertia, meaning you can go from 0 to Max Speed (or the reverse) in the amount of time it takes to push off from or land on the platform, and you don't really have a turning radius.

Sprint:
Sprint
Level X
-[Character] has a footspeed of [X*10] mph.
Sprint, as may be apparent, is Flight's groundbound cousin. It scales more simply and lacks a Boosted version. Before anyone asks the obvious question of what the point of Level 1 Sprint is, a character with Sprint can keep up that speed basically indefinitely. Sprint doesn't use stamina.

High Speed Combat:
High-Speed Combat (Level X)
-[Character] is able to track objects moving up to [X*90] mph.
HSC is another common ability, which does pretty much exactly what it says, but there's a few things that make it stand out as weird. Firstly, it isn't level-able directly like most abilities that have a level. HSC goes up when your movement ability (Flight, Sprint, etc) matches its maximum tracking speed. If you don't have a movement ability, you have to buy level-ups from your shop as individual items.
Another thing that's weird about it is that it's not actually slow-mo. Most portrayals of high speed awareness tend to just slow down everything else, but HSC simply raises the ceiling on what you can perceive without actually changing how fast you perceive it to be. Which means that the effect is both subtle enough for even fairly experienced combatants to miss that they have it, and really mindfucky if you become too actively aware of it.

Dual Wield:
Dual Wield
-[Character] can utilize both of their weapons simultaneously.
One of the more under-utilized standardized abilities out there, probably because a lot of people don't realize it's necessary. And in fairness, it isn't always. But if a character has two weapons on their sheet that are actually listed as separate weapons (and not just a two-part weapon like paired swords), then hey need something to help them work around that or they'll be unable to use them both to their full extent and just keep swapping back and forth.
Dual Wield lets you use both your weapons together to full effectiveness, allowing you pool their Attacks Per Turn together for use on either weapon, combine attacks from both weapons like two halves of a Double-Hit attack, and dual wield things that logically would be really impractical to do that with, among other miscellaneous benefits.
Skill:
And now we're getting into the abilities with ladders of stronger versions. First off, Skill.
Skilled
-Spend four Actions to nullify an opponent's action.
More or less exactly what it professes to be. You spend four of your ApT to shut down one of the opponent's attacks. In practice, this typically takes the form of parrying or deflecting the incoming attack, although occasionally dodges get thrown in there for flavor. It's possible to "overextend" and negate an attack with Skilled even if you don't have 4 APT, but doing so leaves you off balance and vulnerable. Also notable is that you can't skill-negate Spells. They have too much metaphysical oomph behind them and will just smash through attempts to do so.
The prerequisite for getting Skilled is standard combat competency, so if someone has this they're either trained or they have strong enough combat instincts that they might as well be.
Master Skill
-Spend three Actions to nullify an opponent's action.
Master Skill is basically just Skilled but better, and you get it when you hit "peak mundane" levels of technical skill, or thereabouts. This is the cap for Skilled without magic backup being involved.

Inhuman Skill
-Spend two Actions to nullify an opponent's action.
Inhuman skill, the standard cap for Skilled for basically everyone, is the point where the ability flatly stops giving a crap about the physics involved, which lets one pull off some ridiculous shit.
Unmatched Skill
-Spend a single to nullify an opponent's action.
Unmatched Skill is the ultimate version of the Skill line of abilities. Where Inhuman Skill requires the capacity to ignore physics, something that most entities with magic can do in theory, Unmatched requires the capacity to dictate physics. On top of that, the name is literal, and only one entity in the LDC has this at a time, ever.

Dodge:
Skillful Dodge
-Sacrifice four actions to evade an enemy attack.
Dodge and Skill basically work the same way, except that where Skill stops an enemy attack, Dodge avoids it. This means that you can Dodge things you can't Skill-negate such as spells, but you also can't use Dodge to aid allies by stopping an attack that would splatter them.
Dodge doesn't require technical competency the way Skill does, but it does require above-average reflexes and a basic ability to get the fuck out of the way.
Adroit Dodge
-Sacrifice three actions to evade an enemy attack.
Adroit Dodge is, like Master Skill, the point where you have advanced your mastery of "dodge gud" until further improvement requires magic assistance.
Masterful Dodge
-Sacrifice two actions to evade an enemy attack.
Masterful Dodge, like its Skill equivalent, is the point where you're using magic to let you dodge in ways that make physics curl up in a ball and cry. It is also the standard cap for most holders of the Dodge line.
Effortless Dodge
-Sacrifice one action to evade an enemy attack.
Effortless Dodge is the ultimate form of the Dodge line. Unlike Unmatched Skill, it doesn't require being a reality warper to acquire, nor does it have a Highlander clause. Despite this, it is rarer than Unmatched skill, because earning it is that fucking hard. Someone with Effortless dodge can walk through a rainstorm without getting wet, and attacks aimed their way are often mistaken for misses because the evasion is so smooth and effortless that observers don't even realize the target dodged until later.

Agility:
The agility line of abilities have their effect concentrated more in the soft mechanics side of the system than most, and modify the user's mobility in ways other than just going faster.
Inhuman Agility
-[Character] can perform feats of agility that beggar belief.
Inhuman agility allows wall running, quintuple backflipping, etc., your typical anime agility stuff. It can also model modes of movement that aren't just fancy gymnastics, such as someone who's motion is very floaty like an Airbender in A:TLA.
Unreal Agility
-[person] can perform feats of agility that stretch the laws of physics to their limit.
The next step up from Inhuman Agility, this is where the running upside down on the ceiling, running on water, jumping up a chain of falling objects like Scooby Doo, and etc. starts happening. The ability states it stretches physics "to their limit", but really it goes past that pretty often, but is subtle enough to not beat you over the head with its blatant impossibility.
Impossible Agility
-[person] can perform feats of agility that are blatantly impossible according to standard physics.
This one beats you over the head with its blatant impossibility. It's basically Boosted Flight without the self propulsion or platform generation. You go from 0 to max speed or back in the space of a step, and just about anything is a valid foothold. Bullets in flight, snowflakes mid-fall, clouds, even literal fucking lasers like Nepgear vomits all over the place.
Might:
Might is basically the "I am super strong and tough" ability. You ever watch martial arts anime where they're punching each-other and getting punched through walls and buildings and geographic landmarks and all that shit and they just kinda shrug it off on the power of being swole AF? Yeah that's basically what this line of abilities does.
Storied might
-Physical damage dealt is increased by 60%, and physical damage taken is reduced by 60%.

Mythic might
-Physical damage dealt is increased by 70%, and physical damage taken is reduced by 70%.

Legendary might
-Physical damage dealt is increased by 80%, and physical damage taken is reduced by 80%.

Epic might
-Physical damage dealt is increased by 90%, and physical damage taken is reduced by 90%.

Divine might
-Physical damage dealt is increased by 100%, and physical damage taken is reduced by 100%.
Of note: The Might ability line is not actually inherently magical. It's easier to manage with magic assistance, but all of them are rooted in physical ability. Nor is this line of abilities limited to magical girls or capped by existence bonus in any way.
Intercept:
Intercept, the third and final of the standard active defenses. Where Skill and Dodge are lines, Intercept has more of a... starburst. Rather than sequential upgrades, there are a bunch of variants more akin to sidegrades. Additionally, Intercept and its derivatives actually have weapon-ability versions. The difference is that the personal ability can be used with any form of attack, while the weapon ability only applies to the weapon or spell that has it.
Intercept
-If an incoming attack is caught, intercept the attack with one of your own. If your damage is higher, negate the attack, and deal the difference in unblockable damage. If your damage is exceeded, reduce incoming damage by yours before calculation.
This is the basic form of Intercept, and the core of all its variants. It's basically a beam struggle or blade clash, two forces meeting and the stronger crashing through to damage the opponent. Two things are of note here: Firstly, like with Skill you cannot Intercept spells with a basic attack, for the same reasons. However, unlike with Skill it is possible to intercept with a spell, which circumvents the issue.Secondly, you cannot Intercept an Unstoppable attack. It will just smash right through any attempt to do so like it's not even there.

Overwhelm
-If an incoming attack is caught, intercept the attack with one of your own. When intercepting an attack, increase your damage by 75% of your opponent's Base Damage. If your damage is higher, negate the attack, and deal the difference in unblockable damage. If your damage is exceeded, reduce incoming damage by yours before calculation.
Intercept Variant that does exactly what it says.

Cleave
-If an incoming attack is caught, intercept the attack with one of your own. If your damage is higher, negate the attack, break the opponent's weapon, and deal the difference in unblockable damage. If your damage is exceeded, reduce incoming damage by yours before calculation.
Intercept Variant that breaks the weapon they're intercepting if you win the intercept. If the weapon in question is a bodypart, this involves disarming them in a very literal sense.

Punch-Through
-If an incoming attack is caught, intercept the attack with one of your own. If your damage is higher, negate the attack, and deal the difference in unblockable damage. If your damage is exceeded, reduce incoming damage by yours before calculation. Deal your own half of the intercept as unblockable damage on top of the results, regardless of whether you win or lose.
Intercept Variant that guarantees you will hit them, regardless of how strong their counter is.

Primordia
-If an incoming attack or spell is caught, intercept the it with an attack of your own. If your damage is higher, negate the attack, and deal the difference in unblockable damage. If your damage is exceeded, reduce incoming damage by yours before calculation.
Intercept Variant that functions exactly as normal Intercept, except it allows you to intercept spells with normal attacks.

Strength:
The Strength line of abilities are designed to aid in intercept conflicts and the like.
Unreal Strength
-When meeting an opposing force, increase Damage by 50%. Negate if opposing force is backed by: Unreal Strength, Unstoppable, Juggernaut, or a 3-1 damage advantage.
Godlike Strength
-When meeting an opposing force, increase Damage by 125%. Negate if opposing force is backed by: Godlike Strength, Unstoppable, Juggernaut, or a 5-1 damage advantage.

That's all I can think of of the top of my head. If you think I'm missing any let me know.

ARTEMIS DRIVE
Grey clouds hang heavy through a soft blue sky. Shafts of light shine silently onto the fading wreckage that litters the ground below, shattered swords, splintered shields, and corpses long since rotted away. Bones and metal, slowly being swallowed by the returning greenery that had once been burnt away and trampled underfoot.

Two sisters sit upon a hill, the sound of hammers striking metal echoing quietly from the stone walls behind them.

"Two weeks."

Their grey guards shift uncomfortably at the words. Ashen feathers fluttering to the ground.

"Hn?" Ichi Mitsubishi—Goddess Grey—lowers her bow, the borrowed arrows she had been shooting off into the distance returning to a rest stance. "Two weeks for what?"

"Two weeks before the end arrives." Ni Mitsubishi—Goddess Red and Ichi's sister—replies. Her Spawn stand silent and unmoving behind her, her knight never far. "The Light is gathering for something. Most likely an attempt to retake Hope... and if the first battle was anything to go by, the assault is likely going to be the end of the War."

Ichi frowns in thought before nodding firmly. "That'd be nice. Though I kind of hoped I'd never have to go back there again." The Grey Goddess of Man chuckles deprecatingly. "I'm pretty pathetic. Not wanting to reach my end so soon. Sometimes I hate the fact heroes don't get happy endings... though I don't regret it."

"You'll never regret it..." Ni smiles forlornly at her sister. "Though if the Hero isn't allowed a happy ending, then I'm fine being the Villain." She pushes off the grass, standing straight. "That ass Arkos wants me for something, and my free time is up. You take care, alright Ichi?"

The older sister gives a lackadaisical wave over her shoulder. "Who me? I'll do something stupid soon enough, don't you worry. Just make sure you don't get into another argument with one of the Dukes again. I might not be available to play mediator." Ni gives a soft but affectionate scoff before she walks away, her knight and spawns following after her. Long after she leaves earshot, Ichi sighs.

"Silly Ni. Villains get the most tragic endings."

The Priestesses share an uncomfortable look as their mistress returns to firing arrows into the vast grave beneath her.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

You look at Michael... well, no. You stare at Michael.

The supposedly adult soldier tries grinning back at you around all the fifty-caliber rounds he's shoved into his mouth and fails miserably. One of them falls out, leaving behind a slight trail of drool.

Giving that up for a lost cause, you instead turn to look at Aquila—who has far too many arrows sticking up and out of her uniform's shirt to be a good idea—and give a decidedly unimpressed eyebrow to her. At least she doesn't have her mouth full of deadly weaponry like the humans of your team. "To be fair, it sounded like a fun idea at the time."

"Fun idea? Not going to try with 'good idea' or 'great idea'?" you ask in response.

The elf-turned-scarecrow shrugs as much as she is able. "When Sam brought it up it sounded like a really stupid idea, and we all agreed."

"Then why do it?"

She smiles brightly at you. "It sounded funny as shit, and we were bored out of our minds. James walked in half way and instead of stopping us like he should have he joined in, so it's technically all his fault. Blame him."

Still unimpressed, you turn to look at the 'leader' of your team, who instead of bullets in his mouth or arrows in his shirt, has swords—actual honest to Cosmos swords—shoved down his pants. "I just finished writing the reports for the mess on our last mission and needed to unwind. Add in that it honestly looked like far too much effort would be required to stop them anyway... the good news is it'll be easy to clean up."

You stare at him for a moment before slowly turning to Samael who was... technically wearing his uniform but had too many knots in it and was showing far too much flesh for you to be comfortable with. "You guys are aware young girls are supposed to come through here regularly for a variety of reasons, right?"

Sam nodded. "True, but most of them have seen far worse than me. If anything this is so normal it might help with said things they've seen." He waved his Datamine. "Also, photos for the wife."

You raise a finger before lowering it slowly. "I'm just not going to poke that. Please get this all cleaned up before we get sidelined. I'm aiming to accept a mission later."

Michael spits out all of his bullets, "Another mission? Damn, that was quick." Wiping a hand across his mouth he pressed his lips together and blew air through them, "Where we going?"

"Florida apparently. The Horsewomen are supposed to meet us there, something about it being their turf." You shrug, "Apparently the last time anyone saw the Maidens of the Apocalypse they were working with one of the WEAPONs on something, and now everyone's flipping their shit. We're one of the few groups around strong enough to not splatter when whatever it is hits the fan."

Seriousness overtakes the otherwise silly scene at your words. "If that's the case then we'll be ready." Putting action to words, James starts to pull the sword in his pants out. "How late we leaving?"

"Not for a while yet. I've got some stuff on my agenda still, and you were wanting us all to meet up for that how-do-we-shoot-web session later that I think would be a good idea to do first. Though..." You take a quick look around. "Lucky and Gabriel don't seem to be here and... when Aquila met me on the landing pad, she said something about you guys having some new stuff?"

This time all four of them grin maliciously in giddy anticipation. "Ooooooh do we ever." Sam practically bounces in place as he practically hops over to where their collective equipment was scattered across a table. "You know those Soul-Severers we had? They worked, and could fire even after you kept beating someone over the head with them, but their caliber was way too small to be useful. So Alexandra's team cooked up some different weapons. The first is a new sword that's a bit heavier than what should be usable if not for the strength enhancements given by the Frost Dragon armor. The other is a very nice rifle with a similar problem with it's recoil but same solution."

The gun he picks up makes him look positively small in comparison without his armor, but in turn looks sturdy enough to act like a shield in a pinch. "The F-13 Dragonslayer. This bad boy fires fifty caliber rounds in single-shot, burst, and full auto fire modes with a mag size of thirty rounds each. If it wasn't for the Frost Dragon, just using burst could knock me flat on my ass. That's not even mentioning that the bullets are manufactured in a factory blessed by priests straight from the Vatican. Not only can I blast a demon's arm off from fifty yards, the son of a bitch gets set on fire immediately afterwards as well! And that's not even the best part!" The giddy soldier carefully sets down the gun to pick up a large mechanism that resembles a fanny pack that had been lying next to it. "See this thing? It's hooked into the Bounty System in such a way that it clones whatever bullets are currently inside. So not only does the poor bastard loose an arm and burst into flames, but his soul is sacrificed to God so God can give me new bullets to do the same with all of his buddies! It even has an auto-loading mechanism for my magazines, so I don't have to stop and reload them along the way, or carry dozens of them! All it needs is field testing!" He hugs the thing to his chest with a brilliant grin, "Magic is awesome!!!"

You stare for a moment as Sam comes down off of whatever... high he was on, and a few seconds pass before he gets his breathing under control. "So..." His attention immediately snaps to you, but somehow you don't flinch... probably because you're still out of fucks to give after the mess with the Knights earlier. "... How does the recoil not rip itself apart?"

"Oh, that's easy." Sam shrugs. "There's some brandcraft arrays inside the gun itself to reduce the backlash from firing the actual weapon so it doesn't explode in my hands. Would have had a backpack with a belt feed if the idiots designing the stuff didn't shoot it down because it would ruin the aesthetics."

"If this stuff wasn't as high quality as it is, their opinion on aesthetics would get us killed," Aquilla snarks. "Regardless, the new swords they gave us can cut through magical barriers and reinforcements and my new bow is a fucking beast. Also solid metal arrows, can't remember the name of it to save my life."

"Sam here also got a bunch of research in on his spells, and Lucky said something about figuring out how to use the magic you're feeding us to make some new ones of her own," James chimes in, pulling his shirt on over his head. "Either way, enough fangasming over our new toys Sam. Let's all get out to the training grounds so we can figure out these stupid super forms. Aquilla, go get Gabriel and Lucky?"

You glance, and do a double take, as the elf—now free of arrows—hops over the table, snatching up a large black bow and her helmet, to get out the door faster. "Already on it, sir." When did she...?

"Ready to go Nepgear?" You turn back to James to find that he, Sam, and Michael were already dressed in their own armor—with a sword, gun, and another sword respectively—and moving to the exit as well.

"Ah- Yeah. Just give me a moment, it seems like I'm a bit behind today."

"This might only make sense to magic users since it's kind of like describing color to a blind man, but what you do is mentally reach for that connection Anastasia gave us that's feeding us power. From there it should be easy to feel the thing on the other end, and then pull it through."

"You're right. That made no sense." Most of you chuckle at Michael's joke, but the levity only lasts a few moments.

Sam sighs, "Ass, alright does anyone else have a better suggestion?"

"I might." Everyone's attention turns entirely to you. "The first step is actually finding it. I think it's a bit different from everyone but it should be something that stands out to you; for example, my magic is this warm feeling through my heart—I think—and when I want to use it, I mentally picture my hand reaching for that warmth. Everything tends to go from there on it's own."

"A warm feeling huh?" James mutters with a thoughtful frown. "Now that you mention it..."

"Ever since you... well, you know, I've always had this weird feeling of a light around my gut." Michael shrugs, "You mean something like that?"

"Yeah! Exactly like that!" He blushes at your smile. "From there, as I said, I just picture my hand reaching for it. Doesn't have to be that though, so long as you 'mentally reach for the power'. Can be anything, from a fishing line like my sister says she uses, or it just coming closer like gravity is pulling it to you."

"The rest should come automatically on it's own, no extra effort required!" Lucky chirps from her place next to Gabriel, "Once you have a solid grasp on it, you should be able to feel the creature on the other side of it. Just pull it through and you'll transform like I did."

"... Maybe we should get a bit of distance from each other." Sam carefully cuts in, "With how large Lucky was when she transformed, I don't want to know if we'll accidentally fuse or something if we're too close." His words cause you all to stumble to an effective halt at the implications.

You look right at James. "Sam has a good point. As hot as you all are, I don't feel like becoming one with your feet." And promptly jog away. Gabriel giggles nervously as they take that as a cue to scatter a bit across the training ground.

A training ground that was mostly empty both because of the damage you and Uni/Judgement Core had done earlier, and the gossip mill distributing out that Team GEAR was "testing their super modes". The latter had what seemed like a good chunk of the base had turned out to witness it considering all the elves, fairies, and angels in the mix as well as several individuals you recognized form the command staff.

"Should we shout 'Henshin!' or something when we transform? I remember there being some kind of rule for this or something!" You hear Lucky shout over the low hum of conversation from the side lines.

"You're totally right!" Comes Samael's immediate response. "In the name of love, fuck off!"

Not even five seconds later, the other two human members of Team GEAR jump on the opening.

"Counter Solder Power! Henshin!" There goes Michael...

"By the power of Greyskull!" Oh dear why James? What would Jessica think?

"Honey Flash!" And... Gabriel why are you-?!

"Witness me!" Lucky... we trusted you...

"AOU: CAST OFF!" Aquila... the fuck?!

At least the explosion of power distracts everyone from the sheer silly that your support team has devolved into...

Or at least it would have if the insanity didn't continue.

The smallest -Lucky's- is ten meters tall. The tallest -Gabriel's- is fourteen. Samael and Lucky have both turned into amorphous masses of fractal crystal that seem more liquid than solid. Michael, James, Aquila, and Gabriel are solid in form, but output far less magical energy (the former two almost suffocating in their auras).

This wouldn't be too bad... if they weren't...

All...

T-posing.

It was an honestly reasonable stance to take in a situation with unknown growth and power: it kept their arms up and out of the way from accidentally crushing things, and the stance itself lent well towards catching themselves if they found their balance thrown out of whack by said growth...

But it didn't stop the image of six large beings—four of which were highly mechanical in design—looking like a silly glitch in video game avatars. Which is probably why a good third of the audience burst into laughter once the glow faded. You find yourself covering your face in embarrassment even as Rei chokes down her own laughter. You did not weep. Sega is a filthy liar.

It isn't until James' super form falls over from his own pose that the laughter finally starts subsiding and your team starts taking things seriously again. You also refuse to join them until they're gathered in the rough middle of the training ground as well, but that's mostly because you didn't want to only be referenced to the silly poses made by giant robots.

...

Oh god, what is Gaia going to think? It's a well known fact she's been advocating figuring out giant mecha for years.

"This feels really weird." James' voice booms through the air as his 'mecha' rhythmically clenches it's hand. "It feels just like my body, but it doesn't move exactly the same. Like I'm wearing some kind of heavy armor that's contradictorilly as light as a feather."

"I don't think that's an actual word James." Sam replies, his own form flashing through a myriad collection of colorful lights with each word. "And you think you have it bad? At least you have limbs."

"That lack of limbs isn't to bad." Lucky's own shape twists like that blue diamond out of that one old anime Sega stayed up late to watch a few years ago, "Its really reactive. I can change the shape of its body with little more than a stray thought. Which is pretty cool. Some practice and I'm sure we can figure out how to make graspers or something to hold stuff with."

"This is so cool!" Gabriel's super mode hops about behind them. "It can do pretty much everything we can do normally, but I still feel a drain on my stamina. It's nothing debilitating, but it's definitely not sustainable." She holds one of 'her' hands out, a massive blade sized to fit her new form's hand appearing. After a moment to test her grip, she swings, causing a shock wave strong enough to split the ground for several feet in front of her. "We're also definitely stronger than normal as well. If not faster."

"Though it will take some getting used to." Aquila raises her own hand to summon a bow of similar proportions. "I'm probably the strongest elf alive right now. Aurea eat your heart out~." She tests the draw string for a moment before sighing. "Sadly though, she could probably still kick my ass..."

"Aurea?" Michael asks Aquila.

"My aunt. Also Royal Champion and Legate of Tebaerin. She could probably kick our asses up and down this training field even with all... this." She waves a hand to indicate Team GEAR's transformed states. "It's totally unfair, especially since she's not egotistical about it so I can't hate her over it."

"Sounds rough."

"Its not... which is kind of the problem?" Aquila huffed. "Never mind, it's nothing to worry about."

"Hey Aquila?" Your elf teammate looks at you, "It's okay. If you ever need to talk, I'll listen, alright?"

Several moments pass before she nods with a sigh, "Alright. Thanks Nepgear. Let's get back to finding out what we can do with these, shall we?"

"Right!"

You don't find San.

She ends up finding you.

The White Goddess of Man is still wearing Rei's pants, but instead of the pink blouse from yesterday, it's now a thin hoodie that's only partially zipped up and shows an ample amount of cleavage. She also looks like she didn't get as much sleep as a doctor would likely recommend, but these days you wouldn't be surprised if the Top Twenty in their entirety were finding themselves lacking such.

"Anastasia." You stop just outside Command as she calls for you, drawing quite a bit of attention from soldiers as they walk by, "I've been thinking about what you said. About what we want to be remembered as when our time comes."

She heaves a deep breath, hand on hip. Nodding firmly, San Mitsubishi gives you a look full of determination. "I've decided." Her announcement causes those few still within earshot to come to a stop, some strange feeling drawing them like moths to a flame as her presence seems to awaken from a cold sleep. "I want to be remembered as Goddess White. Even if the fighting never ends, I want those that pick up a history book to know that I refused: that I refused to give into that despair again.

"It won't be easy, and I might never be forgiven, but that doesn't matter. I'll fight for that end I want to see. I'll strive for it on my own two legs, and grasp for it with my own two hands. Rei wants her challenges, Ichi wanted her glory, and Ni wanted our happiness. I want our future. So no matter what comes, I won't run any more. I'll keep advancing.

"So..." She stick her hand out before her, open and inviting, "If you need help, don't you dare hesitate to ask. You got it?"
And so it begins...
Smiling, you grasp it. "Perfectly."

"We're going to Florida. It's about an hour's flight from here, but don't get comfortable. According to the Fairy Seekers, this area is going to be the most likely place that the Maidens of the Apocalypse and WEAPONs will be for the next few days. They're looking for something, but we have no idea what... and its our job to find that out."

The Skybound's rotors roar as James gives a general outline to the rest of your team.

"Solid Drive won't be with us on this one, Juggernaut Drive and the Old Guard are being let out of the hospital tomorrow morning, and they asked to be there."

"Wait, didn't we kick their asses just yesterday?" Samael points out. "How the fuck are they getting out tomorrow?"

"Two reasons: one, healing magic is a hell of a drug. And two: the weakest of them could demolish the hospital in a few swings, do you really want to tell them 'no, you're not allowed to leave until we're done monitoring you'?"

"... Objection withdrawn. Carry on."

"That's what I thought. Regardless, not our problem. The Horsewomen of the Apocalypse are going to meet us just outside of our drop zone; it's this tiny place called Hawthorne. Pretty much middle of nowhere Florida. We're to go in, take a look around, figure out what's going down if we can manage, and try not to start a fight." He chuckles at the last part, "Apparently we have a reputation of being miracle workers, who'da thought?" The rest of you give a short laugh at that as well.

"Anyway, settle in for the rest of the flight and hope nothing happens."

"Yes sir!"

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"There's a sinkhole in the middle of..." You frown, thinking it over before taking another look around. Once you're sure, you correct yourself. "Okay, not the middle of town. But still, where'd the sinkhole come from?"

"It wasn't done by our quarry, that's for sure." You and the rest of Team GEAR turn around at the voice.

"My name's War. It's nice to meet you. Me and my Sisters usually handle this area on our own, but when word came down that several of the not-so-friendly Top Ten were in the area, we asked for help..." Eh, makes sense but... "Please tell me you're not all they sent." War definitely looks worried. And honestly? You don't blame her.

"Don't worry." James reassures her, "All evidence points to a fight being unlikely. If one does break out, we'll be able to disengage easily, or at least lead the fight away from civilians."

"I'd rather not test that, if it's all the same to you," War sighs. "Either way, welcome to Hawthorne. The sinkhole seems to have been building for a while, but this area's so quiet no one caught it before it opened and swallowed a couple houses. Happened last week, so as far as we can tell it has nothing to do with why our guests are poking around here. Do you guys have any leads?"

"Um," You scratch your cheek nervously as War focuses on you. "Actually, we might. Twelve days ago"—and holy shit was that shockingly recent—"me and my Team stumbled across a nest of Nightmares up in Boston. Somehow it was hiding from Gaia; she was completely unaware of it, and no one knows how. So chances are, there were signs of something similar in this area and the WEAPON was dispatched to investigate on her behalf... the Maidens were also involved in the Boston Mess, so they're likely seeing if there's anything that could be a threat to Sil... but that's only a guess."

"Makes sense..." Aquila mutters from your side. "Divine beings aren't much for playing nice with each other unless there's something to be gained, outside of a few special cases. If something can hide from Gaia, that means there's stuff that can hide from Shiva. I don't think either of them would like that idea."

"... It's the best lead we've had for the last few days." War grumbles. "I don't like it, but there doesn't seem to be much choice in the matter. My sisters are around around and about asking questions. I'll go let them know you're here and what you've shared with me. Feel free to poke around yourself, or ask them what they've learned."

"Will do, it's been nice to meet you War."

The girl chuckles, "That's a pretty rare sentiment. Stay cool girl." And with that she turns and walks away.

James shrugs, "Well then. It's a lot quieter than I was expecting, but we better keep our guard up just in case." He pats his new sword and straitens his stance. "Whelp, what do we do 'boss'?" You roll your eyes at his joke.

I loled at the T-pose reveal so goddamn hard.

Absolutely wonderful.
The funny note is that the original scene was a lot sillier, but Lost shot it down before I could do something I would regret.

And on that note, here ya go:

The Original Scene said:

Naron's Dive Into the Eldritch Truth
Soft Mechanics and how to Exploit Them
Naron's Dive Into the Eldritch Truth

Well... here is something that 90% to 95% of the entire audience will never need, and the remaining number will love while also cursing it in the same breath.

Soft mechanics should be familiar to most of the attentive readership already, though mostly in the understanding that those cover everything not covered by hard mechanics. Which is true, but also not the whole truth.

You see, even the hard mechanics run on soft mechanics, as weird as that sounds.

And after recently discussing the matter with Crys himself for a little project of mine, I now have a good enough understanding to try conveying it to everyone else who might want to know. Which is... the handful of core people who are way too deep into the whole thing such as myself, and the spinoff-QMs.

It is not that the topic is difficult. It does, however, add somewhere between one and two layers of complexity due to requiring a lot to work through for any one character.

Hard and Soft Mechanics

The big difference between hard mechanics and soft mechanics is that while hard covers the what, soft covers the how.

Yes, that is it. Sounds like an easy distinction, but one actually has to understand what it really conveys.

Let us look at an easy general example: Detonate.

The hard mechanics of Detonate are "this attack hits additional space instead of just one spot".

The soft mechanics of it are "this is how it attacks the entire area".

In this case, I can think of two potential ways off the top of my head. The first is a shockwave being emitted from the epicenter, such as from a grenade. The second is a projection of the attack itself encompassing the entire area of effect, such as a sword slash hitting every spot in that area simultaneously.

And as that second example shows, it can get crazy once magic gets involved.

However, the part that makes this such a troublesome topic is that such effects exist not only for a character's weapons and Spells in general, but also for every single Ability on any of the former, as well as personal ones. And most importantly, no two instances of the same Ability necessarily have to work the same way. They can, but they do not have to, so you have to start from scratch for every character.

The Golden Rule

In order to actually work with soft mechanics, it is required that one knows exactly not just what a character does for a specific action, but also how.

Now remember that even baby sheets mostly appear with no less than two weapon Abilities, two Spell Abilities, and two to three personal Abilities. That is already six to seven effects for a starter sheet. Unusual weapons can also require additional thought as for how they work, increasing that again.

For a high-level character, it will take several hours just to determine how all their stuff works.

So, the rule: Know how your character does their stuff.

The Actual Exploitation

Now that we know how soft mechanics work, how do we exploit them?

Well, that is simple: once you know how they work, think of creative ways to use them. This can go from small to some incredibly horrifying things.

An easy one would be going back to the Detonate used above. If we go with the third example, an attack-projection into every part of the area Detonate covers, there is a potent magical effect there.

Now, seeing that it already hits every spot, the owner of this effect could either polish it to make sure all strikes hit at exactly the same time for an effect akin to Omnipresent, or try to focus them on a smaller area to stack several slashes against the same target, either as Double Hit to Slash Hell or even Hit by Level.

You can usually assume that a seasoned character has at least a handful of such exploits. But once it gets into the big leagues, specifically the top 20, Crys himself stated they went over everything in their kit in search of every exploit they can get.

Oh, one last thing: Talking to someone else, it was said that this is in parts just the creator being clever by making it so specific exploits are possible. And this is true, but also completely fine. As long as it fits a given character, there is no reason not to do it. The smart ones here are the characters in question, who figured out they can use their powers in a new way.

Examples

Now for something bigger. Something greater.

I spoke to Crys about a few exploits we already saw or heard of before, and he gave me two prominent examples plus one to keep your interest.

White Soul:
Yes, her. The psychopath who murdered her way through the Old Guard and semi-recently tried to put Nepgear five foot under.

Her most visible exploit concerns her ability to clone herself and keep up to two instances of herself around, being able to delete one of them at any given time.

Due to the fact each instance of White Soul is separate, her bodies also possess separate Spell-limits. Follow the Waves creates a fresh version of White Soul instead of directly copying her, thus the new one comes with an unused Spell.

With these specific effects, White Soul is able to create a new body, delete the old one in that same moment, and use the new one's Spell to repeat this song and dance a great number of times, but at least 20 times per turn.

Due to the fact the instance she deletes from existence is entirely separate, an attack that targeted it will miss. Even something undodgeable or even Unblockable may be evaded because the actual target no longer exists.

In other words, White Soul abuses her cloning to get several dozen free hyper-dodges per turn.

But now for the part where it gets fun; dodging is not the only thing this particular trick lets her do. You see, with each time she clones herself, The White River, her weapon, is also cloned.

The White River is basically a white mass that she can form into whatever shape she wants. And what can contorting masses do really well? Merge.

Instead of deleting a body's weapon as well, she instead merges it into the remaining White River, thus steadily increasing its mass and volume. Aside from the fact this allows her to do more with it, this also increases its Base Damage by the regular amount each time a new one is merged into it.

Once it grows big enough, she can simply submerge an enemy and crush them to death; a technique which, coincidentally, falsifies both Bind and Crush.

To quote Crys on the matter:
It's actually how she beat the very first Dark Lord. She simply played keep away until she had what amounted to a small lake worth of the River and simply kept squeezing until something gave.

The demons that witnessed it still have nightmares about one of the strongest demons to ever live going out screaming in agony and begging for help.

All while Soul just laughed and laughed.

Absolutely no one doubted Magical Girls after that regardless of how silly they could get.

Goddess Gold:
Because of course we have to talk about her. Rei was already the subject of a previous tutorial, that one about False Abilities, which are a subset of soft mechanics exploits.

Just like over there, we will take a look at the two most powerful parts of her sheet. Oblivion "Fuck you and die" Awaits and Chains of the Earth, the inescapable chain-bondage by another name.

Let us start with Oblivion Awaits which is an energy wave originating from Rei's hand. Yes, her hand, no sword-swinging involved. It is projected in a cone.

Through rigorous practice, Rei brought it to a point where she can not only lower the projected amount to but a sliver of its true power, but also assume direct control of the Spell and move it at will. The previously noted effect she uses this for is to keep an instance of the Spell active around herself to create Auto Counter, an automatic intercept against anything trying to attack her. It is basically a form of Spell Cartridge, too.

The other big thing she does with it, and which apparently earned her Overwhelming Presence its particular effect, is to spread the energy wave evenly all around herself, creating a kill field in all directions which also carries Omnipresent, and can thus not be evaded except by not being where it hits.

Crys also noted:
Its difficult as all fuck but she's been doing it for so long that it's more or less natural by this point.

Bonus points in the fact her armor and affinities make her immune to [Oblivion Awaits] as well.
So things like spell reflect are useless against her.

Quite potent and insanely powerful. Now let us look at what Chains of the Earth brings to the table. It is actually less noticeable, mainly because Rei likely needs it less often. The amount of opponents that can push her on the defensive is quite low.

As we already saw toward the conclusion of Operation Soul Collector, Rei throws up entire walls of chains instead of just a handful. They reach far and the mass is dense enough to obstruct magically enhanced sight, allowing someone to hide behind them.

Or, in Crys words:
Since they're fundamanetally inescapable Rei likes throwing up walls of them to catch attacks that she recognizes as capable of otherwise breaking through her deflector shield.

Which leads to a lot of funny scenes of attacks being halted centimeters from her because her opponent ran into a chain net thinking she was open.

Looking at just these two things, we have found that not only are they an incredibly powerful offense and utility, they also make for a just as powerful defense by fiddling with how exactly they work.

Solid Core:
Yep. Nepgear herself.

Crys actually gave me a few of her exploits, some of which I think Nepgear has yet to get. So with that as an incentive for people who want to optimise the main character, let us look at them, starting with the Spells.

And honestly, I can quote him on that immediately:
To start with, her Spell Celestial Severance is a 2-dimensional cutting edge that pretty much severs everything along the swing arc.

The white pane left behind could best be described as a dimensional wound where one part of reality has no connection to the other, making it ouright impossible to pass. Mostly via the "there is zero ways forward" error if you would

Aside from being horribly sharp at the edges, this wound also lasts for about a second. If Nepgear swings correctly, she can create an inassailable shield with a 50m radius. Anything that does not literally teleport to the other side or can spill over the edges is blocked.

You can also walk on it, though that is less useful because it does not stay for long. Still interesting for someone fast enough to make use of it.

Next up is Starshine. Which, I was told, can fake Interceptor Fire, which is Unmatched Skill but restricted to ranged attacks; the sheer amount of bolts and the fact Nepgear is potentially capable of controlling each one individually allow her to shoot down not only one attack, but tons of them. Alternately, she can strike against individual enemies instead of just glassing the earth with some practice.

Another exploit for this one is similar to Rei's protective deathwave, which Nepgear can achieve by holding the individual bolts close. In difference to Rei however, she can cover allies with it as well.

Due to how far it can be micro-managed and the amount of fine control Nepgear can reach, Starshine may also be used to augment her regular attacks, or intercept attacks aimed at allies. With how many bolts she has per cast, she is capable of keeping up a powerful presence on the entire battlefield.

Aside from those, Nepgear also has some defensive exploits. They are passive and already in effect, though.

I like how Crys phrased it, so let me quote him again:
The first, and biggest, is that there's a solidness to her that is superior to virtually all other magical girls. Mostly caused by the fact Indestructable Core and Supremacy Zone together practically shut down most soft exploits via forcing them into a Hard Mechanic confrontation. Which they lose as a matter of course.

That's not to say that they shut down everything, but Nepgear is built in such a way that she can easily force a hard mechanic confrontation.

And at the truly top level combat, that can be lethal.
To be concrete, anything soft that tries to affect Nepgear is shut down. Body Modifiers, shut down, fake status effects, shut down, etc.

Anything that affects things not Nepgear operate as normal, such as White Soul's teleport and growing damage, though we did not see the latter in their confrontation. Rei's Auto-Counter would also remain unaffected.

Closing Words

That should suffice for an idea of what this is about. I hope it is clear enough.

Now look back over the actual explanation and compare its length to the examples, each of which just cover a few exploits for the given characters.

I think you understand the effort involved in doing such examinations for their entire kit.

Soft mechanics have a lot of depth to them once one actually starts to look for how stuff works. It is time-consuming work to nail every effect down and figure out what to do with it.

However, if one actually goes through that effort, they can get a much better understanding of the character they actually created and how they work.

The Trouble With Time Travel
The Trouble With Time Travel
Or: Why Chronos is most likely going to be in a Bar when you go looking for him.

Time Travel is both simultaneously incredibly difficult to pull off... but also incredibly simple to do once you know how. The best way to describe what I mean is by using Doctor Brown from the old movie "Back to the Future". The guy's IQ was as high as the plot demanded but it had still taken him literally all his money and most of his life to pull off.

But once he figured it out, he started blowing through the temporal wall on a regular basis.

The only part of this that the comparison breaks down at though is that under normal circumstances blowing through the temporal wall requires a nominally prohibitively expensive energy requirements. For example using purely scientific means, achieving what the good doctor did in spite of Chronos saying "no" would require enough electrical output to power the entire north american continent in its entirety for roughly fifteen years or so. Give or take a few million gigawatts. There's ways around this, sure, but those ways around are rare enough to likely be counted on one hand. Two if Chronos is having a particularly unlucky millennia.

Regardless though, all of this actually doesn't matter all that much. Why do you ask? Because the basic act of Time Travel actually isn't all that bad in and of itself. The reason for this is a little something Chronos refers to as "Gloss", and the Dames as "Glass".

What is Glass/Gloss?
The Glass/Gloss is something of a passive safety mechanism that Time utilizes to keep itself from fracturing and vomiting paradoxes all over the place. It's a kind of "not actually there" filter that wraps around the time traveler that isolates them from the time period they travel back to. So long as the Gloss is present, the natives of the time period remain unaware of the time traveler and non-temporally solid items can be passed through like air. (Think doors and such things that are moved out of the way often.) The problem with Gloss though is that despite being a safety measure, it is disturbingly easy to break. But that's mostly because the fact if you have the power to travel through time, you have enough "oomph" that the Gloss really has no chance in stopping you anyway. Once the Gloss breaks, then everything solidifies for the Time Traveler and the natives of the time period can perceive and interact with the Time Traveler.

Please note once the Gloss breaks it can't be restored except by leaving the time period. And pretty much anything can break it: from kicking a door open to plucking a blade of grass. Good news is it can't be broken accidentally, only intentionally.

The Fold
The Gloss comes with a second, far more important layer, aside from the easily broken perception filter. This layer is known as The Fold.

The Fold is the most dangerous and consequence-heavy aspect of Time Travel. Just as easy to break as the Glass the Fold is the "personal time" of the Time Traveler as rendered in the flow of time. The more the traveler goes back and forth up and down the river of Time, the more time folds in on itself to keep the Traveler's journey consistent. The only two ways to get rid of the Fold is for the Traveler to either return to their natural time, or be killed. Or in other words: to "close the loop" more or less. So long as they refuse to go back to where they belong, the Fold remains and prevents travel to the periods they have been to by other time travelers. Though that prevention is easily broken if the Time Traveler causes what they recognize as a paradox.

If the Time Traveler causes a situation that would result in a paradox then the Fold will shatter like fiberglass hit by a train as Time attempts to correct history. A good example would be the Hitler paradox: you have a time traveler that finds themselves in Nazi Germany with World War 2 in full swing. And they just so happen to have a rifle and a clean line of fire to the most iconic madman of recent human history... problem is they also know without a doubt this is not how he dies.

In this scenario resolves with the Time Traveler taking that shot, creating the paradox, his personal Fold breaks and Bad Shit starts happening.

But what if the Time Traveler didn't know that wasn't how Big Daddy H died? Well, then it gets a bit more complicated.

If a Time Traveler finds themselves in a situation where they know the eventual outcome, but not how the outcome had been achieved, it is possible to cause changes without inciting a Paradox because the Traveler wouldn't be aware that the paradox is happening. Or in other words: ignorance is bliss, and Chronos uses it like morphine.

So long as the Time Traveler doesn't change the outcome as they know it from what they remember, it is possible to utilize their own ignorance of a situation to turn the details of what would have otherwise been a crippling event into a survivable struggle. Or let people that otherwise shouldn't have survived a situation to come out alive.

So the safest situation a time traveler could be in would be a situation where they have no idea what the fuck is going on.

Why is breaking the Fold Dangerous?
Just like the Gloss and Fold itself, this is another complicated point.

It's also one with a surprisingly simple answer: Goetia.

Complicated/Long version? When the Fold breaks, the metaphorical "shards" get scattered across the time stream. These shards then take on a mind and will of their own with a twisted fascination centered on the species of the Time Traveler that caused them to form. This fascination eventually mutates into a form of love that almost inevitably ends with the shards deciding to just put the given species out of its misery because they can't bring themselves to keep watching as they "torment themselves". There are exceptions to this, but the Fold being broken is rare enough that it's not a guarantee of one spawning on you being agreeable long term.

Thanks to the Clockwork Dames, these creatures gained the moniker of Solomon's Demons. And they are the primary reason for Chronos to take up the Clockwork Dames as his agents. Literally pieces of rogue time given agency, these fuckers exist completely outside Chronos' day planner, making even engaging them in combat a trial in and of itself. Never mind actually killing one when you finally pin it down. They take what they think are the absolute best traits of their 'parent' species onto themselves in a kind of insane mockery of worship which depending on the species involved can lead to some really insane combinations.

This is also one of the first times I'll also bring up the White Empire because they actually aid Chronos and the Dames regularly in hunting these guys down. While not to the level of the Time Lords or the Daleks, the White Empire are still capable of "solidifying" space-time in a given area in such a way they can trap a trans-temporal creature into a single dimensional region long enough to kill it, or hold it in one place long enough for the Dames to show up and kill it for them.

Solomonites are about 90% of the reason Chronos doesn't like people fucking with time travel. These things are existential threats on the level that Cosmos' self-proclaimed white blood cells will drop what they're doing and get involved immediately.

So yeah.

He'll likely be in a bar drinking if you need him.

INSIGHT DRIVE
The early evening moon hangs in the sky, little more than a vague outline against the coming light of dusk.

It shimmers red.

Part of you can't help but feel as if that is an omen.

"Alright everyone. First thing's first, let's go see if we can get into contact with the other Horsewomen and see what they've found out, if anything..." You take a quick look, and... Yep. War already wandered off somewhere. Should probably see about asking her as well. "Keep in contact over the radios, if any of our quarries show up, try to ask questions first. We don't want to trigger a fight if we can avoid one. If hostilities seem like they're inevitable, attempt to disengage. I'd rather not find us in a brawl here."

"Rodger!"

And with that, you kick off and float above the town as the rest of your team scatters into twos. From the vantage point above the town, you can see how deceptively small it is. Being a 'mere' seven square miles, the town is even smaller than your own before it was destroyed by the Spawn of Mayhem, though not by much. Especially since your hometown had an even smaller population than Hawthorne's 1,500.

"... What is everyone up to here?" you mutter as what looks to be an out of town visitor in a funny looking Tricorn hat glances up to your star in the sky before slipping into a small compact and driving off. "Well, just floating up here isn't doing any good. Time to get to work."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Aquila and Sam are the first to find one of the other Horsewomen. Famine is standing out front of a roadside bar and grill, trying to mediate an argument between what looks like two different biker gangs that you don't recognize at all... and it honestly didn't seem to be going well considering one of the groups were...

"Shut the fuck up and butt out of this little girl. Load back up onto your little magical scooter and go home to mommy while the real men have their talk."

Complete assholes.

Bonus points in the speaker for the other group was a woman who looked a bit older than your mother should be now. Biker Chick and Famine were both looking at the Idiot like he was a two headed chicken while several of his 'buddies' were groaning, likely in embarrassment to be associated with the Idiot.

"Are... are you flirting with me?" ... Not the comeback you thought you'd here from Famine, but the look on the guy's face was priceless. "No offense man, but I'm taken. Also your bike is way smaller than mine so if mine's a scooter, what does that make yours?" Actually, never mind. There was the fusillade you were expecting. "Maybe you should... you know. Shut up before you dig your hole deeper."

Several of Idiot's buddies were silently nodding behind him, but said Idiot turned a rather brilliant shade of spruce... you think. You're not good at subtle colors.

"I'm going to-GhrkaaaAAAARRRGGGGG!" And his stupid just broke. Namely, it broke his hand on Famine's face, who didn't even flinch when he swung at her. Famine's look of pure 'srsly?' grew even more pronounced as the Idiot clutched his broken fingers as several of those present start laughing.

"Is this normal?" Aquila's voice cuts off only a bit of the laughter as Sam just sighs heavily and palms at his face.

"No. Not even remotely. I can feel a few of my brain cells dying from here." Stepping forward, he cleared his throat loud enough to draw the attention of the core group. "Ms. Famine? Samael Balier from the Counter Force. I'm a member of the support team sent to help investigate. Me and my teammate were hoping to speak with you about what you've found so far."

The Magical Girl shares a quick glance with the Biker Chick who simply jerks her head towards him in a clear dismissal. Shrugging, she walks over, leaving the Idiot's buddies to flood into the sudden gap and help him up.

"Nice to meet you." She glances down at his armor. "... Nice outfit. So what did you want to ask?"

"Its not as silly as it looks. Regardless, wanted to ask you if you've discovered anything yet. All my team and I knew coming in was that this was the most likely place our... friends were to show up."

Famine nods, "Understandable. Unfortunately though we've found nothing so far. The Sink Hole could have been it, but all evidence is pointing to nothing new. I've been asking around here, but none of the locals know anything."

"That's alright. Our other teammates are looking for your sisters to see if they stumbled across anything themselves just in case though."

"No problem... hey, no offense, but you guys aren't all they sent... right?"

Aquila simply sighs in understanding.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The second found is Pestilence by James and Michael.

At a park with a bunch of kids.

"Haha! Tag, you're it!"

"Oh nooo! I got migititis! I must spread!"

"No! Aaaahhhhhahahahaha!"

"Looks like someone is having fun." And she honestly does. The red-clad Horsewoman is chasing kids back and forth around a large jungle gym as several of the tyke's parents all watch on. Soft flashes from cameras showing that this day would be going into numerous scrap books. "Magical Girl Horseman of Pestilence?" James' call gets the attention of everyone in the playground. "Pardon for the interrupt, but me and my team just arrived to help you and your sisters. I was hoping to gather what you know so far to see how we can help out."

"It's okay," she chuckles as some of the kids all run up and gather behind her like she's some kind of bush. "Haven't found much of anything myself so far. None of the kids or their parents have seen anything, and no one's been hurt or gone missing either."

"That's actually good to know. Where have you looked so far?"

"Pretty much this entire side of town." Pestilence shrugs. "Me and my sisters have been here since yesterday poking our noses about. So far though, there's been no signs of the Maidens or the WEAPONs... though I gotta ask, you're not all they sent. Right?"

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Gabriel and Lucky are the ones to find War again. The black clad Horsewoman is standing next to four... radically different customized Harley Davidson motorcycles, the one she's leaning against specifically looking like it came off the set of a Ghost Rider film.

"Hm? Oh, its you two. You have some more questions?"

"Yes ma'am-" Lucky starts—

"Please, don't call me ma'am. It makes me feel old." War cuts the fairy off with a wiry chuckle. "Anyway, I assume you want to know what I've learned myself so far?" When the two inhumans nod together, the Horsewoman continues, "Pretty much nothing. Me and my sisters all arrived yesterday and have been poking around and asking questions of those who actually want to answer. There's been no sign of the Maidens or the WEAPONs at all since we've arrived, and the last time anyone saw any of them was Sin WEAPON about a month ago."

"Sin WEAPON?" Gabriel asks awkwardly.

War sighs. "Yeah, the weakest of the WEAPONs. She came through and stopped for a steak a couple weeks back. After that, nothing." She shuffles a hand through her coat, pulling out a bag of beef jerky. "All we've been doing today is mostly just poking around physically and trying to be friendly with the locals. So just burning time and waiting for some backup that's better at this stuff then we are." Popping open a bag she takes a piece out and holds it up, "Jerky?"

"Yes please!" Gabriel takes the offer immediately.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

You find yourself looking alone for Death. Your flight over the southernmost parts of the town a leisurely float between structures and off the main roads. "Haven't found Death yet... but from what you guys are saying I don't think she'll have anything to add." Sighing heavily, you set down next to what looks like an antique store. "Hey, Lucky? How reliable do Fairy Seekers tend to be? Not to be an ass or anything... it's just this is starting to feel like a wild goose chase."

"... No offense." Lucky mutters over the radio. "They tend to be spot on most of the time, with a small miss rate. Having the necessary talent to be a Seeker is rare, and even then it's not an obvious thing unless you know exactly what to look for. So we don't have many at any given time. Regardless though, even the few times they've been off mark it was nominally because Chronos was involved somehow. Considering they literally look through time."

"That doesn't sound like a healthy thing to do."

"It's not. Which is why there's so few Seekers. Overuse of the time watch ability can lead to insanity at the best of times. So we have to be careful with how we use them. Regardless though, this is strange. Are we sure we've found everything?"

"No clue," you reply. "I still haven't found Death yet, and she might have stumbled into something since yesterday." Huffing in frustration, you turn around the corner of the antique shop and down into the side alley beside it, "Once I find her, lets all gather back-"

It takes several moments to realize someone is screaming.

It takes several more moments to realize that someone is you.

"Shit! What happened?!" James?

"She just dropped as I came around the corner!" Who is... Death?

"Sit still, we're on our way!" War?

Slowly the feeling of worms in your brain fades to a blissful numbness, "W... what?"

"Solid Core! Are you alright?!" James' helmet blocks out the light from the setting sun as he kneels over you, "What happened?"

"I... lines... on the wall." It's hard to think. As if someone had taken a knife to your brain and stuck a live wire into the cuts.

"Lines on the wall—?" Miachael's voice trails off before a sudden shout of pain blasts your ears. "FUCK! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! WHAT THE EVER GAIA LOVING SHIT—?!" The human male stumbles backwards through the edges of your peripheral vision. "SHIT! No one look! God... No one fucking look!" Samael catches him before he falls over, very visibly ignoring the wall that both you and Michael had looked at. "God dammit it feels like someone shoved a fire poker into my brain, SHIT!"

"No one look at the wall, out of the alley!" James' orders manage to shake everyone out of the sudden stupor that had dropped on them, his broad arms lifting your petite form from the ground easily even as your wings and weapon fade into sparkling motes of light, as if sensing his desire to help you. Gabriel in turn also helps Samael pull Michael out of the alley.

Sadly though Lucky... isn't so lucky. On her own way out, her subconscious curiosity wins out and glances at the wall as she turns. Her own burst of swearing sounds remarkably like someone took a sports whistle and plugged one end into a vacuum before turning it on full blast. Thankfully though, the fairy doesn't crash, Aquilla catching her before such, and carries her out of the alley.

"The fuck was that?" The mentioned elf growls. "I've never even heard of something that could lay a magical girl out just by looking at it."

"Lines..." You mutter through the fading numbness. Thankfully the pain doesn't come back, though you're still reeling enough that your thoughts are jumbled. "Red lines on the wall. Something... felt like worms in my brain crawling up my nose."

"You're all damned lucky that's all that happened."

The sudden new voice draws everyone's attention immediately.

She's not one of the tallest girls you've ever personally met, but she's one of the most... filled out. The long braid of hair is just short enough that it brushes her ankles but not the ground, while the half skirt attached to her hip sways in a very distracting manner. "Had any of you a weaker mental constitution then I'd probably be filling you full of holes right now instead of talking."

"Not really something you want to open with there." The Horsewoman you recognize as Death returns. "What the hell was it they saw anyway?"

"It was a Sign." Sin replies simply. Everyone looks at her waiting for elaboration. "... From the blank looks you're all giving me, I get the feeling none of you know what a Cosmic Sign is?"

Lucky mumbles something that has Aquila adjusting her grip on the fairy. "Care to share for the class, Lucky?"

"Signs of the Cosmos," the Fairy utters softly, before grunting. A swift tap on Aquila's arm has the elf put her down before she continues stronger. "More commonly known as Cosmic Signs, or simply Signs. They're a kind of language that's... sentient in a way. Or at least that's the best explanation anyone has ever managed for them."

"A sentient language? That's new." Michael mutters from where he's sitting on the edge of a potted plant, rubbing at his face while holding his helmet in an off hand. "How the fuck does a language become sentient?"

"It doesn't." Lucky replies simply. "Cosmic Signs are more ideas and concepts than actual words or phrases. The difference to regular concepts or ideas though is that they're... kind of like universal constants? Something like that, it's hard to explain." Grunting in frustration, the fairy crosses her arms and taps a foot against the ground. "Every now and then you'll come across an idea that is shared perfectly between different species without a need for jumping through translation hoops. Each of these... 'super ideas' gain traction in every species capable of complex thought. Divides of time and distance meaning nothing to them."

"Ideas that all species share? Like what?" Gabriel asks innocently.

Actually... that's one you can answer. "Gabriel." The Angel looks to you. "What is a Hunter?"

"Someone that Hunts?" She... asks more than states.

"What thought leads to that conclusion? Does it come from what the children were taught?"

Gabriel frowns in confusion for a moment, before her face suddenly spasms into a frightful understanding.

"A Hunter Must Hunt." Lucky's words carry a kind of weight to them that is impossible to miss. Especially with the symbol you saw earlier. "This is one of the many truths that all species share, no matter how far apart they are."

"Cosmic Sign," James mutters. "Signs that the universe is interwoven with itself via thought."

"Or signs of Cosmos' consciousness." Lucky 'confirms'. "These Signs are powerful. In a way they're not all that different from Divine Beings."

"But aren't there Divine Beings that represent concepts though?" Pestilence asks. "Are those Cosmic Signs?"

"No." Lucky shoots her theory down immediately. "Conceptual Divine Beings are representations of concepts. Think living ideas. Cosmic Signs are more the bridges that these Concepts create between themselves into greater ideas. The primordial Concepts are powerful beyond measure, but it is difficult for them to interact with us because they're too pure. Signs though don't have that limit and are capable of interacting directly with us via thought constructs or physical bridges."

"... That doesn't sound good." War grumbles. "What happens if a Sign interacts with a mortal?"

"Identity Death." Sin WEAPON replies. "At best." She leans against a car parked along the road, arms crossed under her breasts as one of her boots softly taps at the ground. "Anything short of a Divine Being of interstellar scale runs the risk of too much information being downloaded directly into their minds. Strong Wills, such as these three, are capable of resisting the download and keeping themselves together, but damage still occurs. Other ways around it also exist, but none of them are pretty, and none are a hundred percent without risk."

"And those risks are far more severe than just having your mind annihilated on contact." Lucky states with all the finality of a gunshot. "Physical mutations would be the least of your worries. Spiritual degeneration, or even rampant spiritual mutation are also possible. The more Signs you understand, the more your soul and mind are twisted into new ways of thinking and operating. Eventually it can lead to death, or being twisted into a monster far worse than you can imagine."

"The God of the Unrivaled Sun, and the Beautiful Monster of the Moon are both prime examples of that." Sin comments. "When they fought the original Hunter Sign, the battle left them twisted into the Abyssal Horror. Forever fused into one being that exists in such pain it has no higher thought. Nyarlathotep mercy killed them some time afterwards."

So it's a good thing you... what? Had a strong will? Or was it something else that allowed you to see the Sign and not get driven into a gibbering wreck, doomed to froth at the mouth for the rest of your life? If one of these things could drive a pair of gods insane and mutate them into... something else just by knowing, then what chance did you have?

"I still have one question though." Samael's mutter draws everyone's attention. "This Sign... why the fuck is it here?"

Silence as everyone mulls it over.

"That's... actually kind of why I'm here," Sin answers. "Gaia says there's been rumors of the Moon Presence being active. Add in the fact Magmos recently relayed to her that Sil told him that she's been in contact with Oedon, we've all come to the conclusion that something fishy is going on. Gaia sensed an... absence in this town for a few weeks. I'm here to find it, and if possible, kill it. Or at least I was."

"Was?" You ask.

"Yeah. Only a few minutes ago, the absence vanished. As if it knew I was coming... which should be impossible but..."

"If it was one of the Signs, then it's likely because you were hunting it that it knew," Lucky states, drawing attention again. It's only now though that you realize her eyes are looking a little bloodshot... Do yours look like that? "If your action falls under a certain purview, then the Sign can and will know about it. Especially if it directly relates to them or something they're paying close attention to."

"... That makes a depressing amount of sense," Sin grumbles. "Dammit—! Since the Sign ran I guess there's no more point in sticking around, is there?" Sighing, she stands up, pushing off the car she had been leaning against hard enough to make it rock, but just as she turns to make her own leave she pauses. "Actually..."

Then turns to you.

"Since we're both here already... Angel had a lot of praise you for you. Or at least as much as she can praise anyone." Dread fills your gullet as the Horsemen all suddenly take interest. "Wanna spar? I don't know when we'll have another chance, but after Angel said a whole five sentences on you, I can't help but wonder."

... Well. Shit.

You sigh. Of course… why not? It's not like the last month or so of your life was going to let you off easy. "So long as we can bring this out of town so we don't hurt anyone."

Sin looks at you with a raised eyebrow. "That's a first. A lot of magical girls would happily jump right in regardless of where they were." The older girl grins brightly, "Just for that, I'll agree! Fighting in the middle of town is a bad habit a lot of us Magical Girls could afford to break! Especially in the higher tiers."

Wait. Really? You look askance at James who nods grimly after a moment.

"She's not wrong. It's usually a pretty small problem all things considered, but Magical Girls are notoriously bad at moving their fights somewhere where collateral damage is less of a concern." He sighs heavily. "Support Teams usually have the task of trying to teach their charges why fighting in the middle of an intersection is a bad idea. I'm actually pretty grateful that I haven't had to do so myself, because it tends to result in a lot of unnecessary paperwork."

His elaboration causes the Horse(wo)men to all shuffle awkwardly as War blushes.

"I…" You brain blanks on a response to that. "Never mind. Let's just get somewhere Sin can have her spar."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"This place is good."

'This place' is a spot roughly a mile outside of the town itself. There's some trees, but it's mostly an open space with hills and more trees in the distance. And what looks like a highway, but you couldn't be sure from where you're standing.

"So." Sin turns to everyone else. "I personally suggest a bit of space just in case, but it's not mandatory. Just understand if someone gets caught up in an attack, I'm not going to be held responsible. Fair warning."

"It's okay. The rest of us need a bit of practice not splattering in a high impact zone." James snarked back, earning a few chuckles from the rest of your team while the Horsemen looked at them like they were crazy.

To be fair though, after what they've been through the last few missions, you'd be worried if they weren't a little bit crazy.

"Alright then…" Sin weapon mutters disbelievingly. "Ready Solid?"

"Ready!" You jump back for a bit of distance even as the spectators scatter for good spots to watch. And instead of moving to another spot, Sin WEAPON simply raises a hand.

Then she rotates it clockwise.

Brilliant red light burns into existence as her hand passes through air. Symbols that mean nothing to you but are vaguely familiar (Sanskrit?) form from that light. But at each hour position of a clock face, a large burning numeral from the arabic numeral system would appear.

"Wha…?" You try asking but trail off as Sin completes what you suddenly recognize as a Brandcraft array formed by nothing more than her own magic mid-air. The individual layers are so dense in instruction that from a distance it would look like a solid red bar. Then the clock hands appeared before spinning rapidly around the circle as the entire thing seemed to fold over and onto Sin. "Oh shit!"

"Hastegun!" And suddenly a red-glowing knee was drilling into your face.

Power bursts into your wings as you feel the grass caress your back. A flicker of a platform and your position is righted almost instantly. The turf is shredded by your feet as Sin WEAPON becomes an electric bolt of red light that races to you from across the field almost as fast as she had launched you with her initial blow.

With a boom of displaced air you go from skimming the grass to spearing into the air up and away from your opponent. "How fast are you?!"

A loud bang sounds off and you watch as a chunk of the ground Sin had been racing across practically explodes beneath her feet… and she's just as suddenly arcing through the air at you. "What is your face made of?" She shouts right back.

"Indestructium!" Is your reply as you lazily float out of the path of her arc…

Just for another bang to correct her course right into you.

Did she really just use the recoil of her guns to adjust mid-air?

The arms and legs latching around you like some kind of demented attempt at imitating a face hugger say 'yes' to that. "Pro tip, if your opponent does something you didn't expect, don't just float there, 'kay?" Sin weapon glows red as she smiles at you.

"Thanks for the advice." You huff. "Now can you get off?" You attempt a punch, but a twist of her hips allows Sin to bend out of its way. But it also causes her to put extra weight on the knee she had used to punt you across the field below. The reason you aimed at it? It was rapidly purpling into a brilliantly colored bruise and visibly swelling.

"Sorry, can't let you hit that until I get Hero to look at it!" Sin chirps brightly before unwrapping her legs and letting them drop, almost causing you to elbow yourself in the side. As you're recovering from that little embarrassment Sin drops a few feet and latches onto your foot, causing you to spin a bit. The spin in turn gives her the momentum she needs to swing herself around and flip into the air just as you try hitting her with the Panzer Blade again. As soon as your weapon is past though, she is suddenly balanced on your front, one foot on your abdomen and the other pressing into your collar bone. "Let's see if this works!"

Uh oh—

The sound is indescribable. It is as if a hundred or more high caliber guns are firing on full auto all at the same time, almost as if the air itself is being torn apart by her attack as a literal wall of lead slams into you hard enough that the smidgen of focus you give to power your ability to fly flickers.

Sin jumps off you as you take a short tumble back to the ground. Thankfully though, you don't impact it as you recover half way down and manage to land on your hands and knees instead of your face. (Again.)

"Holy shit..." You force yourself back to your feet as Sin lands. "What the hell are you made of, girl? That normally caps pretty much anything." The older girl is kneeling in the grass and mud your short fight had made of the field before you had taken to the air. Her injured knee is now a ripe purple as one of her hands drops the gun it was holding to prod at it, checking for the extent of the damage.

"Like I said..." You grunt, heaving for breath as you attempt to get your heart rate back under control. "Indestructium." Your not-so-calm declaration earns a laugh from the other girl. "What about you? How are you so fucking fast?"

"It's my brandcraft array." Sin offers up. "It accelerates me by a factor of ten. Took a lot of work to get it to operate properly without killing me: being perforated by air sounds funny up until it happens to you." That actually does sound a bit funny, but…

"If you're accelerated, then how are we talking like this?"

"One of the many things I managed to work out for it. It accelerates my mind and body when I'm acting, but a few extra clauses let me talk to people so long as I'm not actually doing something. I've been working on it since I originally became a Magical Girl… though it wasn't until Gaia offered to make me a WEAPON that I actually dared testing it." She trails off in a hiss as her fingers find the core damage to her ligament. "Want to call this a draw? Thanks to this knee I won't be able to beat you without summoning one of my Avatars. And using our spells doesn't seem like a sporting thing to do since all we wanted was a spar."

"Yeah," you agree. "Let's call it here. After that last attack, I really don't want to see what you've come up with to actually hurt me." You take a quick scan to find where the spectators of your little event got off to so you could wave them over. Aquilla is the one to wave back as you return your attention to Sin. "Will your knee be okay?"

"It should, but I'll wait until I can talk to Hero about it. She's actually taking doctor classes!"

You raise an eyebrow at her, "Doctor classes?"

Sin fidgets awkwardly for a moment as your team and the Horse(wo)men finally stroll up. "...Okay, she's trying to get her Nurse certification, but still!"

"I don't know what to say to that, but all the power to you… what?" The last is directed at Death and her sisters who are all staring at you as if expecting tentacles to suddenly sprout from your hair or something. "Do I have something on my face?"

They collectively look to your team, leading Samael to snrk. "Oh yeah. You get used to it. After a while it even starts getting funny."

"...Whatever." You shake your head as Gabriel joins Sam in his chuckling while the sisters all look at you even more akanstance than they had previously. "Would you like a ride? Hero is staying at Ataraxia, so it'll be a shorter trip… actually, can she ride with us?" You point your last question to James who nods his head a bit.

"It's… not against the rules? Normally Counter Force forces are meant to give aid to Magical Girls who request it. Can range from anything from a ride to a boost over a fence really. But I don't think anyone ever considered one of the WEAPONs asking for some." He shrugs. "I don't see any harm in it, since it looks like they're firmly on our side for the foreseeable future."

"Really?" Sin weapon brightens up. "Yayifications!" Oh dear lord, she threw her hands up in the air and everything.

"How do you function?" Sin simply gives you a raised eyebrow in response. "What?"

"This is insane," War sighs loudly, "The four of us will stick around for a few days before reporting to the CF base up north. If we find anything weird, or our elusive blank spot shows up again, we'll send a message."

"That'll be fine." Sin agrees even as you shrug to James. "Shall the rest of us get going then?"

"Yeah, I'll call up our Skybound and we can leave… feels like this day's taken long enough as is."

"I hear that!"

It was on the way back to Ataraxia that Aquilla asked something that you had never thought to ask yourself. "Hey, Sam."

"Yeah?" The mage sat straighter.

"You're engaged right? To a succubus?" Her question earned the attention of everyone else in the transport, even Gabriel turned in the Skybound's open doorway enough so she could hear better.

"Uh… yeah." Samael replies a bit confusedly. "What do you want to know?"

"Well… it's just demonic defectors aren't actually that common. So the fact you've married one kind of sticks out, and I'm really curious how that happened."

"Ah, that makes sense." Sam nodded to Aquilla. "Well… we actually met back when I was still in highschool. She was on an infiltration assignment hunting Magical Girl identities before… well. Shit happened. Thing is after the dust settled, she tried going back, but learned the mission itself was a ploy by someone up in the UD's hierarchy to get rid of her because they wanted to replace her with someone more in line with their own agenda."

"... Wait." You frowned in consernation, "they sent her on a suicide mission so they could give someone else her job?"

"More or less, yeah. So when she got back, someone else already had her job and everyone assumed she was dead. Was so pissed that she decided she didn't want to try getting her job back and came back to Earth. I decided to help her with the Integration Program so she could apply for citizenship, and I proposed to her right before… well." The air in the gunship suddenly gets awkward as the reminder filters through the human members of Team GEAR. "But yeah, she lives in Egypt helping the Pillar construct the new Library of Alexandria."

"Library of Alexandria? They do remember what happened to the last building that held that name right?" Michael asked worriedly.

"Wait, Library of Alexandria? What happened to the previous one?" Lucky chimed in.

"It was the first Library humanity ever built, or something like that. It was really famous and stored knowledge from all over the world," you explained. "But someone got jealous and burnt it to the ground. Scholars these days still debate over how much knowledge was actually lost and what kinds of effects it would have had on our technological progress if it was still around."

"And they named the new Library after it?"

"It started as a joke, but was eventually accepted due to a lack of better names." Sam shrugged. "Either way, they've been collecting Magical Research both government funded and independent in order to fill it up. Literally the greatest concentration of Human Magical Knowledge in the LDC. And Lily is the head librarian."

"That sounds amazing," Lucky sighed, "I wish we could visit. Just think of what we could learn."

"I know right? The good news though, in order to keep the catastrophe of the previous Library from repeating itself they're planning on copying everything and opening up different branches everywhere they can. There's even talk of opening a branch in Sapia or over in Caldersa."

"Snrk." Aquila snorted. "That Caldersa branch is a go. No way the fairies wouldn't jump on that. Not so sure about the branch in Sapia."

"Sucks for them, then." Lucky chirped. "Do you have any idea how much human Magic could help the rest of the LDC? Even if we can't directly replicate it?"

"Oh I know." Aquilla agreed, "It's just they're more likely going to have to build a branch on one of the other core worlds or somehow afford enough to eject another library. And that I'm not going to bet on because there's politics involved. Especially for Sapia; organisations there have held their place for a thousand years or more."

"Good point."

"I've already got someone looking for Gaia and Hero WEAPON, so they should be to the airfield just after you guys arrive," Basilicom announces over the team's communication channel. "Barring something exploding overnight, that should be the last of what you need to worry about. Also, word is Carnage is at the airfield again as well, doing something with her dragon."

"Sounds like fun. I'll leave that to you Nepgear." James shamelessly shrugs it off on you.

"Alright…" You sigh as the Skybound finally touches down in Ataraxia's airfield among several dozen other gunships. "I'll catch up to you guys later in the tent then." Your second in command simply waves over his shoulder as you watch your team make their own exit.

Sadly though you don't find Carnage first. Or, well, technically you do, but the bloody Magical Girl is actually with Gaia and the WEAPONs. It is when you find them though that you learn something that really tossed you through a loop.

"Hope, I swear to god I will stab you."

"But Liz! It'll be faster if I just shoot myself and respawn!"

"THAT'S NOT THE POINT HOPE!"

Namely when you look at Hero WEAPON who is standing off to the side and ask, "What exactly is this?"

She responds with, "Sin's cousin is trying to convince her to just wait the week for her knee to regenerate on its own instead of blowing her brains out for the three day respawn."

You blink at Hero. Then turn to look at Carnage who had just realized you're present. "... Sin's your cousin?"

Sin WEAPON and Carnage look at each other before Carnage glares at her then at you. "Yes."

"That is… not something I saw coming." You state plainly. "What exactly is going on?"

"Liz won't let me just shoot myself so I can let my leg fix itself." Sin -apparently named Hope- chirps happily.

"You are way too eager to commit suicide, Hope." Carnage snarls at her cousin.

"Oh hardly." Sin rolls her eyes. "Between being down a week for my knee to heal naturally versus waiting to come back to life in three days I'd rather the latter."

"Um…" Your voice causes the cousins to both turn to you. "Hope…? Maybe you should consider the fact not everyone is as blase' as you when it comes to dying? So… just humor Liz? Please?" You shrink back in embarrassment towards the end of your request, hands fiddling with each other.

"... Oh alright. Fine. I won't just randomly shoot myself while I'm here." Sin rolled her eyes in annoyance even as Carnage sighs in relief. "Jeeze, you guys are no fun."

You gently pat Carnage on the back as she turns to leave the two WEAPONs with their patron. "Sorry you had to see that Nepgear." The older Magical Girl groaned in exasperation. "Hope is… difficult to deal with at times. She also forgets that our entire team died or…" She waved her hand in her cousin's general direction.

"It's alright Carnage. I… kind of understand. I never had to deal with that but…"

"Yeah. We weren't really the most stable group even when we were all alive. Though Hope is the only one that sold her soul." Carnage runs a hand through her hair before shaking her head. "Whatever, it's far too late to deal with this. See you in the morning, Nep?"

"Certainly," you agree immediately. "Sleep tight Liz."

Carnage pats you on the head as she leaves for her own tent. And considering how dark it is, you decide to head to bed yourself.

The trip back to Rei's tent is uneventful and boring as expected, no one coming out to intercept you. At the tent itself, the only one present is Lucky who has already changed from her armor into a dark grey sleeping gown and is reading a book you don't recognize. "Hey Lucky, anyone in the shower?"

"It's open. Everyone is out dealing with some last minute stuff."

"Alright, thanks Lucky." And with that, you grab your own bed clothes and duck out to the shower cubicle. A quick shower later, you're slipping back into the tent… where you find San and Rei in Rei's bed together.

Rei is wearing her usual thin top and shorts, but San is instead wearing… less than you'd expect. And it also doesn't help the fact with the skin she was showing you can easily notice that despite how pale she is, San can tan really well. "Uh…"

"Yes Nepgear?" Rei's smirk is knowing.

"Should… I find somewhere else to sleep tonight?" You ask, trying to fight down the growing blush. Rei's deepening smirk though tells you it's a lost cause though.

"Nonsense." The Golden Goddess pats the bed between her and San, who was actually laying on her stomach and looking away from you. Gabriel, who is in the kitchen, kept her occupied with talk about cooking. "Your king demands you take your spot, pet."

"... Alright." You silently curse the fact you're so weak that Rei can push you around as easily as she does. Though the fact she's also able to bait her traps so well doesn't help. "Just remember it's been a long day and I'd like to get some sleep."

"No worries~" Rei replies as you clamber onto the massive bed in between the sisters.

Good news? You got some sleep. Bad news? Not quite as much as you wanted. Stupid Rei.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

It starts slow and low. A gradual buildup to volume that easily drags even the deepest of sleepers from Morpheus' embrace. But as soon as it registers, everyone that has been bunking in Rei's tent are leaping from their beds and sprinting for their armor. Or at least, Team GEAR is. You, Rei, and San instead of going for armor throw on enough to protect your modesties before the three of you are flying from the tent and down the early morning walkway.

The raid sirens have whipped the entire base into a frenzy. The thunderous sound of steel clad elven feet fills the air, even as hundreds of angels and fairies take flight. Human soldiers flood from their sleeping tents, even as you watch seemingly random collections of magical girls mix their way into the chaos as they try to hunt their own answers.

Either way though, many begin to notice Rei and San, and as soon as they do a river of girls begins to form. And part of you is struck by how young you all look. With only a handful being older than eighteen. Eventually though, the mass congregates outside of the central command building where Commander Mason is already atop a tank that had been driven over in a hurry.

"Alright, all magical girls listen up!" His powerful voice immediately silences any conversation of the gathered child soldiers, though the chaos of the rest of the base is still audible but muted by the press of bodies. "The Unified Darkness has initiated a two-pronged assault. We have reports of Goddess Red attacking Milidia, and Goddess Grey hitting Valhalla! We've got groups moving to intercept the forces deployed with them, but as of this moment, Ataraxia and Earth is the only location with MG Forces to spare! Most of you are going to be sent to Milidia to help hold the Fortress and close the Hell Gates feeding reinforcements!"

You can see the hope literally drain from nearly all the assembled girls at the thought of fighting a Goddess… "I'll deploy with them!" Hope that is instantly restored by the White Goddess' call. "I can engage Red's Army while everyone else focuses on clearing the Demons and closing the Gates."

"I'll have to veto that." Mason brutally kills the spark of hope. "You're going with Goddess Gold to face Goddess Grey on Valhalla."

"What? Why?!" A horrified San demands, "you need either me or Rei there!"

"Under normal circumstances you'd be right… but the events of the day before yesterday changed things." The despairing Magical Girls all perk up at that. Even Rei, who had been silently glaring at Mason takes a renewed interest. "The Unified Light, and the Counter Force specifically, are currently in a position that we have never been in before… namely the fact we've recently had the entire Old Guard returned to us through an error in the Darkness' judgement." Looks turn thoughtful at that information, and out of the side of your eye you see Rei shoot you a look. "But more than that… the Drives have reassembled. All Five of the Guard. And all three of the Drives… And two of the Goddesses."

The sun breaks the horizon, and the sirens begin to fade to silence even as Mason's form is backlit by the dawn. "As of this moment, the Counter Force has never been stronger… and the events of Operation Soul Collector have revealed that we have a chance to climb even higher." Free Mason, veteran of Hope, grins a bloodthirsty grin. You feel Rei and San both tense beside you. "Orders have come down from the very top, Girls: Goddess White and Goddess Gold aren't being deployed to neutralize Goddess Grey. If we're right, and all signs point to yes, their orders are to capture Grey in preparation to free her from the hold of the Darkness."

It takes a moment for the information to process. But as soon as it does, the cheers are rapturous. "As of this moment," Mason shouts over this din of cheers, "the Three Drives and the Cores are mobilizing to Milidia in order to engage the Army of the Apocalypse! The Old Guard are preparing to deploy to Valhalla in support of Goddess Gold and Goddess White! Our orders are to capture our Goddesses and drag them, kicking and screaming if we must, back into the Light! Now get your asses in gear, and get to the gunships!"

The cheering doesn't stop even as everyone present storms away towards the airfield. Everyone but you and the two sisters you had been standing next to.

"... This is really happening. Isn't it?" San's question comes across more than a little stunned. And Rei looks like someone's slapped her with a rubber chicken. You look between the two of them before giggling, the sound of which drags them back to reality.

"This is definitely happening." You nod firmly, placing hands on your hips. "Ichi and Ni. They're out there. We just have to bring them home, right?"

"... You're right." Rei suddenly agrees, a fire lighting itself in her eye. "I gave up hoping years ago, but the chance is there now. We just have to reach out and grasp it. It won't be easy, Ni and Ichi are our sisters after all, but the possibility exists now."

You suddenly feel a pair of arms wrap around you as San gives you a hug. Surprised, you can do little more than reach up and pat her forearm even as she whispers into your hair, "... Best defeat I've ever had. Thanks Nepgear."

"No problem San." You reply softly. "Now you guys better get going. I need to go catch up to my Team for the transfer."

"Right." You pretend you don't hear San's sniffle as she pulls away. "Good luck, and don't get yourself killed."

"Hah, me? Killed? Didn't you know, I'm indestructible!" You boast back before turning to sprint after the mass of girls that had left you behind.

You transform along the way, and find Team GEAR waiting for you around the Skybound you had taken the previous day, fully armored, though Lucky and Aquilla are both forcing down yawns. "Everyone here?"

"Yeaup," James confirms. "Load up, we have an in-flight announcement waiting for us."

You nod, but take a quick look around. You see Thorn Warden and several others all climbing into a Skybound together, while Fable Heart and what you assume is her team climb into a third. Then a Familiar girl in red garb runs past you to Thorn Warden's gunship. She joins them with a wave to you.

Shrugging, you climb in after Lucky and place yourself in the doorway leading to the Skybound's cockpit.

"Good morning everyone! I am Flight Control Three, but you can just call me FC. Now, you all might be wondering what this is about, but don't worry because it's my job to explain to you what's about to go down.

"Namely, you're about to embark on your first ever Trans-Portal Assault! What is a TPA you ask? Well, it's where we send a bunch of poor schmucks, namely you all, through a portal straight into battle! Why haven't I ever heard of TPA's you ask? Well, it's because if we have a choice in the matter, we don't do them.

"Why? Because we have no fucking idea whats on the immediate other side of the portal! Fairy Portals can be seen through using the Mark 1 Eyeball, but everyone else has to deal with some opaque shit. Even worse is the fact radar and lidar don't work either! So when we open a portal, everyone on the other side can just start shooting shit at it and we wouldn't know until we go through! As you'd expect, these assaults have a pretty insane casualty rate. So if you girls have anything that can make your transport a little tougher, I suggest you layer that shit on as much as you can!

"So good luck out there, and hope you guys don't die!"

As the radio cuts out, you clamber forward a bit more to tap on the pilot's shoulder. "You think you can get us in front of everyone so we can exit the other side first? I should be able to clear the entry zone for the assault."

The bug-eyed helmet nods at you, even as other gunships begin to take off-the one carrying Thorn Warden and his team actually gains a massive shell of overlapping barriers as you watch. "Yeah, I can do that… though if I die I'm going to haunt your ass."

"That's fine. Just make sure we get through first!"

"Solid Core, the fuck are you doing?" James calls from the back.

"I'm going to glass the other side as we go through," you reply, squatting down in the little walkway so you can brace yourself and focus on the gunship itself.

"I hope you know what you're doing…" Lucky mutters as the airfield is bathed in a brilliant white light from the opening portal to Milidia. Sadly though, you can't focus on it as you begin to pour your energies into the Skybound around you.

Going through the fresh portal to Milidia is nothing like going through the commercial one that linked to Heaven. Without the stabilizing bridge elements, you can almost feel the walls of the torn dimensional barriers pulling back together around you. Your eyes snap open as the feeling passes.

Your gunship isn't the first through. The enshelled transport that was carrying Thorn Warden's group has nowhere to go as the corrupt flesh of a Spawn of Mayhem stretches itself into the air, thinning itself out into a net that literally tears through the leading gunship as if it was made of paper, dissolving it into a ball of fire that crashes to the ground ahead of your own transport.

… And honestly, had this all happened a mere week ago, you probably would have instantly curled up into a panicked ball at the sight of the monster's countless eyes and mouths. But now is now, and a week has long since passed. So instead of fear, all you feel is a cruel satisfaction as your Light bursts through your gunship.

"Core Purge!"

And like so many times before, you hang in the sky as a great star. Your light washes over the Spawn, setting it ablaze even as it disintegrates before the purging light.

"This is Skybound Nine! Ataraxia Reinforcements are coming through, and the road it clear!" Your pilot's voice is filled with both relief and surprise, as if he had expected to die like the other gunship… though considering how sudden their own end had been you don't really blame him. So instead of calling him on it, you turn and clamber into the crew area where the rest of your team is.

"Team! We're jumping ship, so lock and load!"

"'Bout damn time!" Michael shouts as Aquilla pulls open the hatch. "This'll be the first time we've done something like this since Starborne."

"What happened on Starborne?" Aquilla shouts back.

"'Twas a silly mission," is Gabriel's response, "we don't talk about it."

"Alright then…"

You turn around enough to shout to the pilot, "Feel free to hang in the sky and keep the way clear for the rest of the gunships!"

"Fine! Just don't get yourselves killed!"

You stick your tongue out before following Lucky through the hatch.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Outside, Milidia is in chaos. Lines of trenches hold a steep valley against a seemingly endless tide of demons and monsters that are attempting to drown the defenders in corpses. The sky is filled with Angels and Hell Beasts that struggle for dominance while a literal rainbow of colors denote dozens of Magical Girls that are mixed into the slaughter.

And it is into this chaos that your Team leaps from their transport.

Almost immediately, you lose track of them as a Hellbeast that had been aiming for your ride unintentionally slams into you instead. For several seconds, you tumble as the surprised demonic flyer tries to push you off. But before it can separate from you, your Panzer Blade ignites, and the pane of light from Celestial Severance cleaves it in half.

Then you're bouncing off the ground with a crash that crushes another demon beneath you as a frantic blast of force from your wings allows you to avoid crushing a Fairy mage that had been fighting him.

Skidding along at speed, you dodge a human tank that is blasting away at a group of skeleton soldiers fighting what looked like a small horde of zombies. Just past them, your Purifier Beam lances out to blast another Spawn of Mayhem that had been trying to reach up and tear a group of Angels from the sky, the pure energy setting the beast alight. But you cannot stop and focus on it, for a massive demon with hands larger than you are comes at you.

A flick retracks the magnifiers of your weapon, it's blade focusing down into a fine line as you leap into its attack, dodging past crushing fists so your blade can bite deep into its flesh to almost separate an arm. But there's no time to stay and fight, and in moments you're already past it.

It is at the moment you finally see your Team again. James, Gabriel, and Mike together form a silver-white spear that tears it's way through the horde of demons before them. Sam and Aquila chase behind, gunning down anything that does not immediately die to those in front with a bullet or arrow. Lucky flies just above them, trails of magic about her as she smashes anything the others cannot simply steamroll with her spells. Their advance stalls as a massive beast erupts from the ground, a vast wall of Flesh and Hate that chills you to the bone to witness.

… But you refuse to hesitate. You dive, racing along the path of carnage that had been left in Team GEAR's wake. A meteor of Light, you slam into the head of the beast that had come to confront your friends, the light from your Celestial Severance cleaving the head from the vast neck that had held it aloft.

Yet as you're recoiling from your attack, a second head erupts from the ground. Titanic jaws rise into the air to swallow you whole, even as you twist in place in order to fight back-

Then the Spear appears, and the World Shatters.

The pulse of force that travels through the air knocks Angel and Demon through the sky. The ground almost reacts like a liquid as stone shatters into dust and dirt is sprayed into the air. The beast, which had been hiding most of its body under the ground, is revealed in its entirety as the head struck by the spear pulps beneath the force.

"Sorry we're late." You help Aquila pull Gabriel to her feet as Sega descends from the sky, the aura of her power banishing the dust Alex's attack had kicked up. "Turns out Hospitals don't have people who can make portals on hand. You guys okay?"

"Yeah," You look up past your sister. Uni and Rev, Judgement Core and Drive, are floating behind Juggernaut Drive as she uses a wire that had been attached to her spear to real it in. "Sorry, the last minute or so has been really hectic."

"Don't blame you, we just got here and almost got tackled by a Hell Beast…" Sega's reassurance trails off as you blush and start rubbing at the back of your neck. "Wait, did you…"

"We jumped out of our transport and she immediately got tackled by a Hell Beast." James confirms.

"A-anyway!" You cut them both off immediately. "Big invasion, what are we doing?"

"Well…" Alex frowns, twirling her spear in hand. The force of which kicks up enough of a wind to blow about your hair. "We can probably crush the army coming through and hold them closed… but I don't know for how long considering that thing didn't die when I hit it…" She says the last with a glare directed at you.

"We're going to have to close the gates." James buts in before someone can start bullying you. "We can probably handle it… and if we need any help, we can just recruit some Magical Girls along the way."

"Probably. But if we want your team to have the best chances of success, Anastasia should go with you." Rev chimes in.

"But we lack super-wide range attacks," Sega refutes. "While we can hold the line on our own with Uni's help, we won't hold it nearly as well if we keep Nepgear."

"While I'd like to say I can do fine on my own, I kind of have to agree. I can only hit so much of the battlefield, sis," your fellow Core tells her sister. "So I'd appreciate the help."

So, it was up to you again. Either stay and help your sister hold Ni's army at bay, or follow James and get those Gates closed… No pressure, right?

"How exactly are we even planning to assault the gates?" You ask, trying to ignore the pressure that was once more focused on you. Because seriously, this time you're not the only one. "Red is no tactical genius, but even a complete idiot with two braincells to rub together won't leave those gates unguarded."

"We're going to rush the gates head on," Alex states plainly. "Two teams, the Line Team rushes the gates, smashing as much as we can in a straight line in order to draw as much attention as we can. Hopefully it'll create enough chaos to draw the guards off the gates by convincing Goddess Red that our attack is the real attempt to close them."

"And while that's happening, the Assault Team swings around past the Unified Darkness' forces using the chaos as cover," James takes over, pointing to the side of the valley that was debatably less wrecked than the rest of it. "With all the angels, demons, and fairies in the air if we're quick about it we'll be able to get close enough to the Gates to pop some caps into the Gate Demons."

"Gate demons?" You and Uni ask simultaneously. You look at the other Core, who is now glaring at you in annoyance.

"Hell Gates are opened by Gate Demons," Rev cuts in before a fight can start, "they're these speedy little fucks that have to bury themselves a bit into the ground in order to root a new Hell Gate. Kill the demon, the gate closes. Which tends to be simple enough considering they can't move while supporting a Gate."

"So, Line Team or Assault Team?" Sega asks you, a firm look of determination on her face. "I'll trust your decision."
