Crisis in The Bay:
Alexandria: The danger in The Bay, that we cannot let spread by any means, is a complete and utter distortion of reality. People are living happy, fulfilling lives and thinking things will be "okay" in one of the most crime-ridden cities on the East Coast. Real life is gritty, dark, and edgy. Everyone is supposed to be a horrible monster with just enough of a light side to make you not just kill them on the street then and there.
If levels of happiness rise among any of you, these collars will detonate. The exceptions are happiness causing pain to civilians and petty grudges being solved during an s-class event, or from your designated one chapter of the only redeeming quality about you made just so we all feel bad for wishing you where dead. Now lets go out there and make the world a horrible place for vaguely pragmatic reasons!

(sorry if that was out of place, but hard to resist typing out)

Vindictus, Ylamona, Larekko12, Pax_Empyerean, King Arthur, and anyone else who wishes to have this discussion of hope as a good emotion, please take go to the amateur philosophy thread. I'd rather not see anyone get an infraction for wanting to have a genuine discussion on a controversial issue like what happened in the Therapy thread.

Imagine Taylor and Lung hiding out with a horde of old ladies looking for them.

It is even more zombie-like if it is realized that Taylor will eventually be an Old Lady. Like the end of a Zombie movie where the two heroes wait for death, one already infected.

But also, I like the idea of Taylor learning about Japanese stuff. It is a blending of cultures and shows that genetics is not all there is who who belongs where.

Except she's not manipulating hope. She's basically letting her true doG! Of Good and Growth nature shine through, which makes people relax. Basically, the same as if in your darkest hour as the enemy is at the gate, and then Gandalf the White shows up with the right tools to fix shit.

She didn't manipulate Army; he just has no idea how to respond to a divine promise of 'Calm ye Halbeard, I got this'. So he assumes that she's a cape instead. But things are changing. Ameratsu the doG, yes, that was her name. She is Ameratsu the God, and she comes now to Bet at the turning of the tide.

Taken in its broadest sense that is a very subjective question with different answers for different people.

But I'd say you would basically get two kinds of answers:
(a). The short (aka common sense) answer.
(b). The long (aka philosophical) answer.

Though as I said, it is subjective and I doubt you'd be asking if you didn't already have you own personal answer - which when you get down to it is the only one that really matters.
So I won't bother pursuing the subject on this thread.

Actually this is irrelevant. Armsmasters negative reaction had nothing to do with hope in and of itself and everything to do with the natural fear and paranoia anybody in his position would have felt at having been the victim of what is (as far as he knows) a powerful Master/Stranger parahuman effect.
Hope and whether it is a good or bad thing, really isn't what he is concerned about at all.
 
Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of the debates around this fic are between people who're are arguing Doylist or/Watsonion and people who either can't tell the difference or blend them or whatnot?

I for one, though, am GLAD that Taylor's picking up on the proper names and cultural stuff behind of being a Miko, which was the main (if confused) thrust of my disquietude over on BS

Ammy not being parahuman is irrelevant in all objective senses. She's a Sophont with supernatural power. She used a supernatural effect of awe with purpose. This purpose was to stop armsmaster after making Taylor run away from a cop rather than walk up to him and express her right to tell him to fuck off. This power may simply be epic level diplomacy but even dnd admits at that point it's just casting dominate person.

It's essentially no different than twilight sparkle casting want it need it.

There's nothing to really suggest that Ammy made Taylor run away as opposed Taylor deciding to run away from the cop. Plus, if Taylor doesn't have those rights. Or, while she could say that, the cop would then respond with their right to detain someone who was found in the commission of a crime. Vandalism is not legal, and in fact can be considered a felony. Of course, it's not clear Armsmaster would have taken that route: his initial approach was not aggressive, Taylor just bolted as soon as he was in sight.

They're discussing Ammy using her bloom effect on Armsmaster to make him stop and pet Ammy giving Taylor enough time to leave.

Read the section I bolded:

This is what I was primarily responding to. Your explanation makes 0 sense applied to that.

He had his weapon in hand when he started pursuit, and put it away when Miss Militia asked him if he had it out.

He might not have thought this was an aggressive thing to do, but from the other side of things it's a guy in power armor with a weapon in hand running after you. Not necessarily unjustified, but... we might just have very different ideas of what constitutes an "aggressive" approach.

No, you're just misremembering what happened: Armsmaster approached on his bike, Taylor then bolts. After he begins the chase he draws his weapon, but she was already running at this point.

. They were currently splattering paint across the trunk of a dying oak tree in a wide, spotted arc, like a shooting star. They jumped when the headlight illuminated the area, cast a quick look over their shoulder--wearing a mask, natch--then dropped the paintbrush and bolted into the night.

Armsmaster, already half off his bike to make an attempt at a friendly approach, cursed and started running as well. He disengaged the magnetic lock on his halberd and gripped the weapon, just in case. "Halt! This is the Protectorate!"

I find it hilarious that praising the sun is a literal win condition for people in this story. The more Sun praising, the faster Ammy can cut the endbringers in half and generally make things better.
