is astral form just undetectable no matter what?
Kyubey can see us, our master and the other masters and servants can't see us but can sense us, and to everyone else it's entirely dependent on their affinity for the supernatural. I can't recall anybody from Type-Moon that could see us in spirit form that also falls into the category of "someone we are likely to encounter in this quest".

Day 24 Chapter 6
[X] Plan Dark Knight

School has ended for the day for your master and her allies, and that means that it's time to go knocking in doors. Well, it would be if you had hard proof that the 'Church' was actively involved in the death of the missing person. As it stands, all evidence points to the witch being the responsible party, with Father and Sister being little more than brainwashed pawns. As for why, you can only guess that they and their 'Church' are meant to serve as lures to bring in prey to a witch that's otherwise too weak to collect food for herself.

Or it's waiting, conserving its strength until the time is right.

You spot Sister Hope - Alina Gray - as she returns 'home' to the 'Church' warehouse from wherever her day's travels have taken her. Watching her from your position, you never see her stop to look around for the student ID that she dropped on her way out. Does she even know that it's missing? At any rate, she's 'home' now; and you're going to make your entrance a memorable one for the pair.

"Hi there," you say, emerging from spirit form in full servant cloth. "Do you folks mind if I ask you a few questions?"

The pair look at you with vacant expressions. You aren't even sure that they're aware of your existence yet, despite you standing right in front of them. "Of course," Father Despair says, as on his face you watch as something flips a switch in his brain, causing him to register your presence. Still nothing from Sister Hope, though. "All are welcome here. What would you like to know?"

You had been thinking that appearing, quite literally, out of the blue as a servant would have gotten you some kind of reaction from either Father Despair or Sister Hope; instead you get nothing. No look of surprise, no immediate questioning of how your appearance was possible; nothing. Instead, you get what you assume to be a boilerplate welcoming. That's a bad sign; it either means that their familiarity with the supernatural is so intimate that a man appearing out of thin air no longer surprises them, or that their minds are being held so tightly by the "Black Mountain' that their responses have already been chosen for them ahead of time.

Or any number of possibilities, you remind yourself, but those two are the first to come to mind. So, how do you approach prying answers from them in this situation? Ah, yes, that's an easy way to do it. You'll frame your questions in terms of things they would already be familiar with. If their responses seem like they're hiding something, it's probably safe to assume the former. If their responses sound canned, then it's probably the latter. "I was wondering if you could tell me a few things about your Righteous Sister. Who is she?" You turn your head to Alina, and add "I've heard you go by the name of 'Sister Hope'. Would the 'Righteous Sister' happen to be you?"

Alina shakes her head. "I am merely the vessel which Our Sister uses to speak to the world. I hear Her speak to me in dreams, and Father and I work to enact Her will on earth."

"What sort of things does she tell you and your father to do?"

"It was She who instructed us to build our place of worship here, and to assemble to Her a great flock of those who would be the faithful. And when that was done," Alina gestures to the maddening murals of black, grey, white, and crimson that adorn the walls "She instructed me to paint the visions which She showed to me in my dreams."

So far, you aren't sure whether you would call the pair 'willing' collaborators or not. They certainly sound all to willing to do as they are told, but how much of that 'willingness' is due to the 'Black Mountain's control over them is another matter all together. "And, what makes you and your father so willing to do what your 'Sister' tells you to?"

"Our Sister offers Her prayers to all living things, that we shall enact Her will and be righteous on earth, and join Her and all of creation in Her embrace. So we do as we are told."

She believes it, too. It's all canned, and not a single syllable sounded out of cadence with any other syllable, as though she's had that exact response programmed into her, but at the same time she genuinely sounds as though she believes in the truth of every word she's saying. "So, getting back to my original question, then. Who is your 'Sister'? You say that you've seen your 'Sister' in dreams. Who is she? What is she?"

Again, Alina gestures to the murals on the walls. "Our Sister is here, with us. All that you see here is the representation of Her image on earth." You have no indication of whether what she's saying is figurative, as if to imply that the 'Sister' is everywhere, alike to the Christian God; or if she's being literal, and the images painted on the walls are actually what the 'Sister' looks like in her visions. The colours are right, but given that you've consistently heard the coming evil described as a 'mountain' you aren't quite sure that what you're seeing is an adequate representation. These look more like spirals or waves - or tentacles, even - than they do mountains, and the only thing that's distinct enough to identify is the red-and-black sunburst used as the symbol of the 'Church'.

You point to one of the sunbursts, and ask "What about that, then? Your 'Church's symbol, what does it represent?"

"All things cast a shadow when they are exposed to a source of light," Alina says, as though you weren't already aware of that fact. "All of creation is Our Sister's shadow, and that light is the source from which Her shadow is cast."

Time to move in for the kill, it would seem. "And did you know that a dead body was found, in this very warehouse park, with that symbol stamped on the back of their neck?"

"That must have been one of the faithful," Father Despair takes over for his daughter. "If they are dead, then their loss will surely be felt throughout the flock. But they must be rejoicing, for in death they shall surely become one with Our Sister."

Okay, so no sympathy points for a dead member of the flock. Got it. "I'd argue otherwise. It'd be hard for them to be 'one' with anything, considering the number of pieces they were found in. This guy didn't go out peacefully or easily, or anything like that; he was bitten and slashed to death." Still no visual response from Alina or her father. "Actually, that's why I'm here- I've been doing some investigating into his death." You don't feel inclined to tell them that the investigation arose well before you found a body. "I'm assuming that your faithful tattooing themselves with the 'Church's symbol isn't standard practice, am I correct? Can you think of any reason why our corpse might have had your logo stamped on his neck?"

"Is that unusual?" Father Despair asks. "Our Sister's light appears on all Her faithful after a time. It marks them as ready to truly accept Her blessings. Look-" A few hundred years ago, the nape of Sister Hope's neck would have been considered the height of erotic and getting a glimpse at the skin behind her parted lime locks would have been the highlight of your day. But you're an ageless heroic spirit, she's not your type and underage to boot, and it's her father revealing the sunburst-marked skin of her neck to you, and all of that really saps the eroticism from the sight. "Sister Hope was the first of the faithful to be marked by the blessed light of Our Sister."

"And what if I told you that your 'Sister' wasn't all she's cracked up to be?" Your slight towards their chosen deity don't earn you a response, but what you say next does. "In the course of my investigation, I've come across some pretty damning evidence that points towards your 'Sister' not being as benevolent as you're making her out to be."

"I am afraid I don't follow you. Our Sister only wishes for righteousness and goodness to flourish throughout Her creation."

"I've heard tell that your 'Sister' is a witch. Do you know what a witch is?"

Whatever you were expecting to hear out of Sister Hope's mouth, whatever that was was not it. It's as if her voice somehow glitched, as though it were playing through a broken sound card in an old videogame, or something. "I'm sorry? I didn't quite catch that. You still aren't sure what Sister Hope is trying to say, but you are sure that her voice 'glitching' like this has something to do with you having brought up witches. Combined with the obvious kiss mark on her neck, and you think you've seen and heard enough to make your call. "A witch is a malevolent entity formed from curses that seeks only to consume and destroy. You're putting yourselves, your flock, and everyone in the city in danger if you let her continue to do the things she tells you to. Did you know that? Have you heard of witches before? What about puella magi? Is that term familiar to you?"

You aren't getting answers that you can understand, and any answer you do get is incomprehensible. You would guess that that concludes negotiations. With nothing else you can think to say, that leaves only one thing for you to do before leaving. "Here," you say, handing Alina's student ID back to her. "You dropped this earlier today." She takes it with a hesitant hand, wordlessly staring at the thin laminated card. She mouths the name printed on the card, "Alina Gray" as though the name were unfamiliar to her.

"Father," she finally says, breaking her silence with an inquisitive tone as she shows the ID card to the man beside her "This girl looks like me, doesn't she? Why is that?"

"She does, Sister Hope," the man says back. "But I could not tell you why."

You've seen enough. You don't think you need to see any more.

... OKAY. Well then. That was certainly a conversation. Time for a little exorcism then! Archer's sheer speed as a Servant should allow him to do what he does to Alina and then to the father without much delay or time for the father to react, seeing as they're base Humans. Hopefully anyways.

I... can't help but feel this will take the lid off the box that holds the beast, so to speak. But perhaps the situation necessitates it. I would prefer if we had more then just archer here. Do we have to do this right now?

Well, according to Caster's Sha Naqba Imuru, the Black Mountain shouldn't be hatched until the 14th or 15th of April, the current day being the 8th. He also stated that they could slow it by interfering in it gathering influence and power, therefore Archer should release them from the Black Mountain's hold to prevent more people from being entrapped by it's Witch's Kiss and being consumed.

Eh, I still feel there's a bit of risk factor, but I guess there always would be one and homura time stop does give some lee way.

I didn't know this at the time, but according to Norse tradition, the power of prophecy was a distinctly female specialty. Adds a little extra touch to Oriko having gotten the only Nordic servant of the bunch, doens't it?

And speaking of Oriko, what are we supposed to do if we need to have combat training exercises? Kirika's only got nine months of total experience as a puella magi, combat included; while Oriko has even less at only four months. It would probably be a good idea to give them some real combat training before Wally World comes around, but we've got them Geised to where their Soul Gems burn out if they try to harm us. So, how are we supposed to handle that?

Just some musings I had, I'll leave them here while we wait for a third vote.

Again, I'm not entirely sure this works this way, but whatever.

Let some of our Grief Seeds "hatch" and use the Witches as sparring partners?

You have three things you have to do as soon as you return home. First, you have to contact McRemitz-san, and inquire about her own findings. You have yet to hear back from her, and while you aren't worried about her ability to handle Assassin in a fight should the two happen to meet, you are still anxious to hear from her. Second, you need to find out who is your landlord. Well, actually you need to find out who would know that information, because you don't have the slightest idea of who to ask. And third, you need to practice Isa. You aren't sure how much farther you have to take your practice before you reach your next major breakthrough, and you want to have taken your skills as far as you can by the time Walpurgisnacht has arrived.

For a time, it seems that no one is going to pick up; but then- "This is McRemitz." Good. So there's no reason to worry that she's run afoul of Assassin and found herself unable to handle it.

"McRemitz-san, I was calling to inquire as to the status of your investigation."

"Sorry to say, Akemi, but I've checked this whole area and there's been no sign of your missing person anywhere around here. I'm not saying that this wasn't the last place he was seen, but he's long gone now. Assassin- You said that they were a hybrid of a servant and a wraith, correct?"

"A witch; but yes, that is correct."

"Well, if it was her, I'd say that your missing person is going to be inside her Reality Marble. If that's the case, then I'm not going to be able to find them no matter how hard I look."

"I see." You had guessed as much, that if it as Assassin behind the missing person that there wouldn't be a body to be found. Not like the one that Archer found. That McRemitz-san was unable to find a body doesn't automatically implicate Assassin - it could be any number of other witches that were responsible - but it does increase the likelihood that it was a witch who was responsible, Assassin or not. "Well, thank you all the same for looking, McRemitz-san."

"Have you had the chance yet to ask your landlord about renting out the upstairs apartment to me?"

"Actually, I don't know who the landlord is. I'll have to find that out - find them out - before I can inquire about you. But I will let you know their response as soon as I have it."

"I would appreciate it." McRemitz-san hangs up with those words, leaving you to yourself. Amy - how long has she been waiting for you? - mews as she rubs against your leg. That's right. With Archer performing his own duties, it's up to you tonight to make sure that Amy is cared for. You see to it that her water and food dishes are filled, and that her mews are those of contentment rather than of need, before you allow yourself to settle in and take up the next leg of your practice. "There, that's better, isn't it?" you ask, crouching down to rub between her ears as she nibbles on the food in her dish.

Your finger traces the frigid rune letter in the air; you can almost see the ambient water vapour particles flash-freezing, skipping straight from gas to solid as they come together in the I shape that has become familiar to you. It's strange to think that you could have come this far after only a week of practice; Lancer made it seem as though this level of proficiency would take you a far greater length of time than it has.

You aren't sure for how long you are able to practice before you are interrupted by the voice of your servant ringing inside your head. "Master, tap into my vision. I think you're going to want to see this."

"Father," Sister Hope says, breaking her silence with an inquisitive tone as she shows her student ID card to her father "This girl looks like me, doesn't she? Why is that?"

"She does, Sister Hope," the man says back. "But I could not tell you why."

The canned responses; the witch's kiss adorning the back of her - and likely her father's - neck; and now, an inability to recognize her own name or face. You've seen enough. The witch of the 'Black Mountain' has complete control over this girl's mind. You don't think you need to see any more. You have no qualms about leaving, now that you have been given a reason to.

But you won't be leaving for long.

You fade into spirit form as you exit the warehouse, re-materializing as soon as you are outside and out of sight of Father and Sister. For the third time during your stay in this city, you Trace the Gáe Dearg into your hands. The Crimson Rose of Exorcism is becoming familiar to you; maybe, in some far-flung corner of the future, a Lancer servant in your image is being born with this spear in their hands. But in a city grasped tightly by all manner of fell magic, a spear which can sever an object's connection to its source of mana is a powerful tool to have at your disposal.

The plan is simple- Go into spirit form, flash-phase through the walls, then re-materialize and give Alina and her father a light prick at the back of their necks; just enough to pierce the skin and break the witch's kiss, but not enough to cause any long-lasting harm. Your superior speed and reflexes as a servant should enable you to strike first and get the job done before either of them know what's stung them.

You ready yourself to lunge, spear in hand, when the image of a spearman in blue flashes through your mind. That's right... You are, in performing this maneuver, doing to Alina and her father exactly what Lancer tried to do to you in that original timeline. Not to as lethal an extent, certainly, but the motions you perform now are the same.

Your spear comes to a halt, but it isn't your own hesitations brought on by memories of that night which have stopped it. Instead, a thin, trailing wisp of black has extended from the mural on the wall, and has caught the spear in between its jaws. What? What the fuck? "Master, tap into my vision. I think you're going to want to see this."

The body of the thing that has caught your spear, appearing to be composed entirely of inky black brushstrokes with thin highlights of grey, has a head and body that could generously be described as having come from a snake, with blank white eyes that stare back at you, unblinking. "Archer, what the hell is that?" asks your master, evident in her voice that she's just as surprised as you by its sudden appearance. "Is that the witch? Or one of its familiars?"

With your strike having been intercepted by this thing Alina and her father now have ample time to turn around and make themselves aware of your presence. As she stares at you, three more serpentine shadows snake away from the mural on the wall, and each one in turn bears its jaws at you. You try to shake free the Gáe Dearg, but the thing's mouth-hold is like a vice.

You hear the creaking of metal as the thing tightens its hold on your spear; and then, nothing. There is no sound at all as its black jaws pass clean through the crimson metal, save for the clatter of the spearhead which breaks the silence as it falls to the ground. You pull what remains of the Gáe Dearg back, but see no bite marks marring the broken handle- Just a clean slice through, as if the material that had been in the thing's mouth when it bit down had simply ceased to exist. "Call me crazy master, but I think I've ID'd the thing that killed our corpse."

"Well, what are your orders, master?"

[X] Tell Archer to engage them in combat
-[X] You'll come back him up
--[X] With reinforcements
---[X] What's the plan of attack?
----[X] Archer will keep his distance and test this creature's defenses. While projecting Kanshou & Bakuya to keep in-hand to defend himself, he will fire off Gáe Dearg at both the entity and the mural it came out of. In order to execute this properly, Archer will fire off Black Keys at the shadows of Alina, her father, and especially the entity in question.
----[X] While this is going on, Homura will telepathically communicate with Bazett informing her of the immediate situation, and if she'd mind coming with. If she doesn't mind, have her tell you her location and bring her to Archer's location via time-stop, otherwise just time-stop to Archer's location. If Bazett is brought along then support her with your projected bow and Isa arrows as she storms the building, otherwise fire off Isa arrows at the entity while in time-stop before exiting it and extracting Archer and/or Alina and her father if need be.

Archer can defend against at least A-rank magical attacks with Kanshou & Bakuya due to the way he warded them, so that should help. He can just trace Gáe Dearg in the air above him to fire off as he does. I wonder if Gáe Dearg is kept embedded within the mural it'll prevent the entity from manifesting, since as long as Gáe Dearg is kept within contact of anything, even if it doesn't dispel it, it'll prevent it from applying or utilizing any magical effect (even the magical properties of other Noble Phantasms).

How about this?

[x] Archer jumps backs and Traces a copy of Archimedes' mirror, countering the familiar's shadows with weaponised sunlight.
Archer can only Project armaments, where the further away from a Sword it is the more costly it is to Project, so it'll go like so: Sword, other bladed weapons, every other weapon, shields/armor. Projecting a Noble Phantasm whose form is a mirror is outside of Archer's specialty.

It'll probably cost more prana than a sword or spear would, but he should be able to do it; he can make things like shields, bows, and fishing rods with his power, after all, and Archimedes' mirror was made by a human so it isn't Divine. And Archimedes' mirror is a weapon; its primary purpose was to light enemy ships on fire.

He really shouldn't be able to. EMIYA can only Project (in his unique way of projecting) things that's recorded by his Reality Marble, which only records things like Swords, Spears, other Bladed Weapons, Blunt Weapons, Bows/Crossbows, Shields, Armor, etc. Conventional armaments. A mirror wouldn't fall under those categories, not being recorded by his Reality Marble, and therefor making it impossible for Archer to Project such a thing. Even though this mirror is a weapon, as you say, Archer can't Project it, much like he couldn't Project a bomb even though it's also a weapon.

As for the fishing rod bit, any Magus could technically Project a fishing rod, just not in the way Archer typically Projects things, a.k.a. not projecting it's history and what-not. It'll just be hollow, very costly, and not last very long (depending on one's store of Prana). I'm also sure that, though it wouldn't be recorded in his Reality Marble, Archer would be able to partially apply his Tracing process to Projecting a fishing rod to an extent due to the blade utilized in it's form, making it less costly and closer to the durability to a regular fishing rod (aside from reinforcement) than normal, though he would never be able to do so if the fishing rod in question was something like a Noble Phantasm due to the massive amount of information he'd lack from not having it recorded in his Reality Marble.
