[X] Wait until after practicing to give a demonstration
[X] Freeze 3/2 -> 3/3 (next level)
[X] Go home and
-[X] Practice more
Kure Kirika and Mikuni Oriko have each shared their most recent improvements, while Kyouko and Tomoe-san discuss taking on a second rune to further their own abilities. And now, it seems, that all eyes are on you. Unfortunately for the rest, you will have to decline. "I think that I'm on the verge of a breakthrough. I'd be more than willing to show everyone my progress, but first I'd like to be able to get in one more practice session, just to see if I can push myself close enough to reach it. If it's okay with everyone else, I'd prefer not to show off the results of my practice until I have it."
"That's fine, Akemi-san," Tomoe-san says, smiling as she pours more tea for those who need it. "I realize that I still have yet to demonstrate my improvements either." She turns to address the group, and you aren't sure what to expect from her. Wunjo, from what you recall of Lancer's lesson, isn't exactly a rune whose applications can be visibly demonstrated. "Unfortunately, and unlike to Kure-san's claims, the work I've been doing with Wunjo really isn't something I can show to you all. At least, not right now. I've been trying to get a feel for using it to distribute combat enhancements, and I've also been trying to work on the, well I guess I'd call it the 'feel-good' aspect."
Tomoe-san's eyes dart around the room in a furtive fashion, as though she's making sure the coast is clear before saying something scandalous. "What I mean by that is, I'm trying to find a way to use Wunjo to enhance our positive emotions, so that we're less susceptible to... Turning, as a result of our negative emotions." No wonder she was afraid. If the Incubator were to find out about what she's planning...
You still have everyone's practice sheets stored in your shield, and the five of you get to work once everyone has their sheet. Kyouko takes one final look at her work on Berkano, before passing it over to Tomoe-san as she traces the outline of Sowilo in the air with her finger. Nothing happens, just as you were expecting, and once Kyouko realizes that she isn't going to get anywhere doing that, she requests a fresh sheet.
Tomoe-san studies the work that Kyouko has done previously with Berkano, and lays out several strands of ribbon on the ground in front of her. Sipping her tea, she stares at the ribbons, deep in concentration. They shudder, twist, and when again they have straightened themselves, scarlet ᛒ markings dot the length of each ribbon. "Not even gunna bother with paper?" Kyouko asks, staring at Tomoe-san's work.
"The point of us all learning the same root magic was that we could share in the benefits and discoveries of one another." Tomoe-san punctuates her words with a sip of her tea. "It isn't much, but the work that you've done was enough to give me the foundation I needed to move beyond paper as my invoking medium." Tomoe-san smiles as Kyouko stares at her, stunned - if you had to guess at the emotion behind her expression - that anyone could have made anything out of her chicken scratch. "So, thank you for what you accomplished, Sakura-san."
"Uh, sure, no problem." Kyouko sits on Tomoe-san's words as she scribbles ᛋ after ᛋ, until, when it appears that inspiration has struck her, she turns to you and asks "Hey Spooky, you've gotten the whole 'drawing your rune in the air' thing down, right? Care ta show me how ya do it?"
Well, it is in the spirit of what we're trying to accomplish... You slide your sheet in front of Kyouko, leaning in as you point to each stage in your practice. "I'm not quite there yet, but I think I can show you the basic idea." Unfortunately, your practice sheet has become warped and wrinkled, and your pencil graphite has faded in places, thanks to constant exposure to repeatedly melted and thawed water vapor in not-insignificant quantities, and certain parts of your sheet are mostly illegible. You'll have to do a better job of explaining your work to Kyouko than you have at preserving your practice record.
"The way it works, from what I can tell, is by grabbing water molecules in the air and forcing them into a frozen state." Your sheet even includes a small hand-drawn diagramme showing your thoughts on how Isa's deposition effect works. "My work is focused on drawing my rune in the frozen vapor so that I don't need to use paper as my medium anymore, but at least in theory it should be possible to make anything you want from the frozen vapor."
"However..." Your eyes travel over to Kyouko's sheet. Sowilo is scribbled with an almost reckless abandon, with no thought given to proper stroke orientation. It's no wonder she made almost no progress with Berkano after her initial work on Sunday. "In order to do the same with Sowilo, I would imagine that you'll be causing a combustion reaction. That's a different process from how Isa does it, so while I have no problems with letting you borrow my practice sheets once I no longer need them, I'm not sure how much you'll get out of them." To say nothing of the fact that she's already fallen behind everyone else...
Kyouko's impatience is going to be her undoing in this endeavor, without someone that knows what they're doing to guide her. Everyone else appears to be making good progress advancing their skills. Tomoe-san has advanced to using her ribbons as her medium, while Mikuni Oriko has altered her drones at the point of their creation to include Othala, and Kure Kirika is the only one of your group to have figured out how to use two runes in tandem. And here you thought she was the least competent of your allies.
And speaking of Kure Kirika... Based on what Mikuni Oriko said to you on Monday night, you had believed that their ability to transfer mana between one another was something independent of Kure Kirika's rune studies. But, she's studying runes for the expressed purpose of taking mana from other sources into herself. Were you mistaken in your earlier assumption, or are her rune studies done in an attempt to improve an ability she already had? And why is mana transfer an ability that she has to begin with? Nothing you've ever learned about the puella magi system has even hinted that that was possible.
Somehow, you get the feeling that you're asking a question that the universe doesn't want you to know the answer to. Somehow, that seems to be happening to you a lot in this timeline.
It has taken you six practice sessions spread out over the five days and nights since your team first took to the runes, but at last, as the thin trail of ice follows your finger in the shape of the rune of ice, you have mastered the ability to invoke your rune using the water in the air. "And that," you proudly say, as three pairs of eyes are on you "Is the breakthrough I was waiting for."
As for the missing fourth pair of eyes? Kure Kirika is off in her own little world, chewing on her outstretched tongue as she plays with the placement of rune markings on a pair of jagged black claws. "... No, that's not right..." you hear her mutter to herself, grabbing for and frantically scanning her eyes over her sheet, which from where you are sitting looks more like a picture of a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle than instructions on Nordic calligraphy. "I need to move this one a bit closer to the bladed edge, then extend this line like that..." She's so engrossed in what she's doing that she scarcely has time to pay attention to anything else. At least she's doing something other than fawning over Mikuni Oriko.
Well, you don't need to brag about your accomplishments. The results are more than capable of speaking for themselves.
You're on a roll right now, and with this most recent success you feel like you can accomplish even more, if you only had the time. But it's getting late, and no doubt your other allies will not be amicable to holing up in Tomoe-san's room for the entire night. Looking satisfied at what you can only assume to be the perfect placement of her runes on the blades of her claws, Kure Kirika fakes a yawn. "Hey, Oriko, can we go home soon?"
"Did you get done what you wanted to?" Kure Kirika nods, and Mikuni Oriko smiles. Turning to Tomoe-san, she says "Tomoe-san, thank you for having Kirika and I over. Really, I know it must have been an imposition to accommodate us on such short notice, but I cannot thank you enough for your hospitality."
"No, no, the pleasure was all mine, Mikuni-san. It was nice to have the company, and if we've been able to set Kure-san on the right path then it was all worth it. Please, see yourselves out if you have to leave. I know your journey home from here is a long one, so don't feel like you're offending me by leaving now."
"Thank you, Tomoe-san." Mikuni Oriko stands and collects her things, before taking the handles of Kure Kirika's wheelchair as the pair depart.
The door closes behind them, and the scene is as it was before, minus two players. Tomoe-san wears a content smile as she watches the pair leave, before downing the last of her tea. "Akemi-san, will you be joining Sakura-san and I for a hunt tonight?"
"I'm afraid I have to decline." Tomoe-san looks saddened, but whether it's from your declining to go hunting with her, or your declining to go hunting with her, you couldn't say.
"I'm on a roll with my practicing, and I'd like to head home so I can do more while I'm still feeling good about my progress," you say, in an attempt to make Tomoe-san understand that you aren't declining to go hunting with her, but rather that you have plans elsewhere tonight. "Strike while the iron is hot, you know?"
"Right." Tomoe-san nods, allowing you to see yourself out as she and Kyouko get ready for the hunt. "I understand, Akemi-san. Take care, and I'll see you tomorrow."
"Right. You too, Tomoe-san. Take care." You are sure that Tomoe-san heard you, but as you take your leave of her apartment, you aren't entirely sure that she heard you.
It isn't all that terribly late when you return home; not even midnight. Amy is asleep, and you can hear Archer at work a few doors down. You're pretty sure you saw him in the bathroom with an apron and bright pink gloves, so maybe you'll awake tomorrow to a clean shower stall. You toss your uniform jacket aside as you take a seat on one of your couches, and start by tracing a thin, icy-blue I in the air with your finger. Instantly, you can feel the temperature of the living room drop several degrees, a feeling you've grown all too accustomed to of late. You'll be feeling a lot more of that in nights yet to come.
