As much as that would be hilarious to see, I don't think anything except something involving Madoka or being drunk can make her lose her cool. She may be improving, but she's still very jaded from all the trauma and isn't going to just rant about Hitomi to someone else. If she ever does so, it would be to her face to tell her exactly why that was a bad idea. Even then, she'll probably be mostly professional with a touch of concern.

Well.... not really. The Magic Circuit system was originally actualized into existence by King Soloman sometime during his reign, it being the only true miracle he accomplished as to not frighten or corrupt the people. This system served to allow Magecraft to be preformed by the hands of the common man that previously belonged only to those with connections to a deity.
I realise that it's been a while, but I just want to point out that this segment is wrong, if I'm recalling my FGO lore correctly. Solomon created the first Thaumaturgical Foundation, not Magic Circuits; presumably these already existed, since Age of Gods magi were fully capable of manipulating prana - they just needed Divine Spirits to teach them how to do so.

Also, on a slightly different topic, I've watched the first few episodes of the Lord El-Melloi Case Files, and I think that the lecture that he gives on curses in Episode 0 would be very relevant to the girls in this quest:

1: It's possible to cast weak curses without even using Prana or your Magic Circuits, just by giving someone a nickname or saying something like "damn those old fools" - and the Lords of the Clocktower have magical defenses that will automatically strike anyone who does with counter-curses.

2. Since curses can also be beneficial in nature, giving things positive, impressive names actually makes them stronger- this means that when Mami named her Tiro Finale because she thought that that was what magical girls were supposed to do, that actually had a magical effect that made her attack stronger.

3. Similarly, adopting "magical girl names" for their transformed forms and a name like "Puella Magi Holy Quintet" for their group should also increase their power, as long as they consistently use those names to refer to themselves.

4. It's possible that the root power that fuels Puella Magi in general is Cursecraft - that they transform into their different forms because they're cursing themselves into them. Similarly, I think that the cake ritual from Rebellion might also have been a form of Cursecraft under Nasuverse rules.

5. Waver Velvet mentions in the manga while talking to Luvia that the power of runecraft as a Thaumaturgical Foundation has been decreasing, which is why her family took up gemcraft to compensate for the weakness/amplify the power of their runes. It's possible that the girls are managing to avoid that in this case, though, because they're being taught them by a minor divinity (and thus potentially using the Age of Gods-style Magecraft rather than the actual Thaumaturgical Foundation).

Well, no, Magecraft already existed in the world before Solomon did his thing, he just made it so that the common people could use Magecraft instead of only those who "stood beside god". It's not explicitly stated, but it's heavily implied that this system that allowed the common people to perform Magecraft was the Magic Circuit system, since Magic Circuits didn't exist during the Age of Gods. Not to mention that Magic Circuits are completely artificial in nature and often has bad side-effects in those who use it, like the whole overheating problem all Magi have, or the possibly killing you from the inside thing if you make a single misstep in performing your Magecraft.

As to the curse thing, you have to understand that Puella Magi use an entirely different system/line of evolution of Magic, which is whatever Kyuubey uses. What you're referring to is the enactment of a Mystery already embedded within the world, which is why people can curse as such even without having the magical means of doing so, and it's also why Luvia's family's original Magecraft is failing, since they rely on this preexisting Mystery which is fading from the world into obscurity.

Though Puella Magi are apparently capable of performing Magecraft--or at least mimicking it through their own system via brute force--I would think that they would have a tougher time accidentally performing the Mysteries that humankind established since their Magic system is so Alien and inhuman which would make it much more difficult to access such Mysteries (at least without Magic usage). For all we know Homura can only use Projection due to the fact that Kyuubey's system uses it instinctively all the time.

I agree with your guess on how Homura and co are learning a much more powerful Rune system, since they're effectively being taught how to access the Age of Gods version that isn't reliant on any Thaumaturgical Foundation (though it would probably cost a lot more Magic/Prana/what-have-you to use, not that that's a problem with the Puella Magi being like Prana reactors).

You reach for your tea. In the time it has taken for this conversation to conclude, the tea has gone cold.

"If you'll all give me a minute, I can reheat the tea," Tomoe-san says, waiting for everyone else to affirm that cold tea will be unacceptable before collecting everyone's cups.

Everyone except for Kyouko, who watches Tomoe-san's movements like a hawk as she holds on to her own cup of tea. "If yer gunna throw'em all out, just put them in the microwave and let me have it all."

Tomoe-san smiles. There's no way she would have let that tea go to waste in Kyouko's presence, after all. "Of course, Sakura-san."

Five minutes later, and everyone save for Kyouko has been served new, hot tea. Kyouko, though, seems perfectly content with drinking the microwaved tea that had been meant for everyone else. "Well, now that all of us are here, I suppose it would be as good a time as any to go along with Kure Kirika's wishes and talk strategy." A chorus of nodding heads goes around the table.

"Last night, McRemitz-san attended the sermon held by Father Despair, with Archer serving as her overwatch and backup. While I have not heard anything from her, Archer has relayed to me much of her findings last night- Unfortunately, it isn't much to go by. We know that Father Despair's sermon is… Rambling and nonsensical, to put it politely; and that Sister Hope is good with her hands. She painted a rather… According to Archer, McRemitz-san described it as, and I quote, 'weirdo black-and-white shit with no rhyme or reason'; and is also the one responsible for making the rosary beads given to new members of the 'Church'."

Hitomi had shown you hers on the walk back to her house last night. While basic in their design, the craftsmanship and attention to detail was still rather impressive for the work of one person, who according to Hitomi is probably only a year or two older than yourself. And speaking of Hitomi... "In addition, a friend of mine by the name of Shizuki Hitomi took it upon herself to attend last night's sermon."

Tomoe-san turns to you as you speak Hitomi's name, asking "Shizuki-san was there last night?"

"Yes. She's been providing me with helpful information since Sunday. If you'll recall it was her information that led to Archer getting tipped off to the presence of Assassin's familiar in the area around the bar. In fact, she told me last night that she was attending in order to find out more for our investigation. She asked for me to extract her once I told her what we had found out so far, and thankfully she appears to be safe. However, I'm still worried that she might have been in there just long enough for whatever dark powers are at work at the 'Church' to have taken root in her, and I would ask those of us who can to keep an eye on her until we can be sure that she's safe." You look around the table, eyes settling on two figures in particular- Your two schoolmates among the group. "That means you, Tomoe-san, and Kure Kirika. The three of us all attend the same school as Hitomi, so keeping an eye on her would be easiest among the three of us."

"Which one's Hitomi?" Your ears catch Kure Kirika's voice asking you a question in a tone that surprises you in its nonaggression.

"The tall one with the long green hair. You thanked her boyfriend this morning when he wished you well, remember?" You take no small pleasure in reminding Kure Kirika that it is possible for her to be kind to people other than Mikuni Oriko.

"Oh, yeah, sure; I can keep my eyes open for her." Mikuni Oriko smiles when she hears Kure Kirika say those words. You don't smile; preferring to keep your pleasant surprise to yourself. "It'd suck if something happened to the girl that's been giving us such good intel about stuff." Perhaps there is hope for her to improve, after all.

"That's good to hear. Now, in light of this recent information, what does everyone think should be the next phase of our plan for dealing with the 'Church'? Do you think it would be better to continue with our current approach, or do you think we should be more aggressive in our investigation?"

"I think our current approach is working just fine, Akemi-san," Tomoe-san says, pouring herself a new cup of tea once her previous share has been depleted. "We still have more than a week before anything is set to occur, so I think we can afford to continue our investigation less openly." Mikuni Oriko nods in agreement; and so does Kure Kirika, to your surprise. Only Kyouko has anything different to say.

"We should barge in there as soon as possible, and knock as much sense inta Father Despair an' Sister Hope as it takes fer them ta cut it out." Kyouko puffs out her cheeks until her face turns red, turning away from the group to exhale before saying "I just don't wanna see them make th' same mistakes as I've already seen, an' if we gotta do it by knocking some sense into'em then that's fine by me as long as they stop."

"I agree with Tomoe-san, for the most part," you say, after giving careful consideration to both her idea and Kyouko's. "However, I think that one of us, preferably one of us with whom neither Father Despair nor Sister Hope are familiar, should go and confront them."

Tomoe-san's gaze turns to you, her eyes fraught with confusion over your corruption of her idea. "Nothing violent, I assure you. But I think we should at least be able to question them in person once, as a way of figuring out what it is that they know. According to Archer, McRemitz-san does not believe Sister Hope to be a puella magi, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're unaware of the world around them. We could benefit from asking them how much they know about us or about our servants. In addition, McRemitz-san reports that Sister Hope has had at least one prophetic vision, and I would like for us to be able to find out more if we can."

Now, understanding washes away the confusion on Tomoe-san's face. "Yes, I think I see your point now, Akemi-san. I don't believe they know of any of us, Archer not withstanding given all the reconnaissance that you say he's done in the area."

"Then, if nobody has any new business they'd like us to address, perhaps we should spend some time practicing our runes? I'm interested to see how everyone is progressing with their practice, and I think now would be a good time for us to figure out how we can better coordinate the use of our runes in our battle strategies to work in conjunction with our fighting styles." This time, everyone is unanimous in their agreement.

Tomoe-san smiles. There's no way she would microwave tea on her life, after all. "Of course not, Sakura-san. Also, you're not getting any tea."
On that note, I am sad that I'm like the only person in my family who doesn't like tea because I can't appreciate the bitterness (unless it's like restaurant tea which is barely bitter, then it's just water but better)

[X] You agree with Tomoe-san for the most part, however they should probably have someone confront Father Despair and Sister Hope under the guise of a Puella Magi or a Servant to discover what exactly they're aware of and if they're aware of the Black Mountain itself and it's influence over them
-[X] Sister Hope's "prophetic dreams" are something to figure out in particular
[X] Practice Runes

I'm kind of confused by the current plan. We're agreeing with Mami that we should keep doing things covertly, only to then suggest that we should openly reveal ourselves?

Don't feel too bad. I'm not a fan of bitter leaf water either; I just recognize that there's no possible way for me to write Mami without copious amounts of tea, and go from there.

You realize that this would also make Kirika the head, right? Do we really want, or trust, Kirika to be the head of our puella mega magi zord?

The trick is to add milk and sugar. ;)

A teabag into the cup, then boiling water and lift the teabag up and down in the water until the water doesn't get any darker, then remove the teabag and add two teaspoons of sugar (or two sugar sachets) and just enough milk to turn it cloudy before stirring.

It'll be business as usual aside from a single encounter, which will let the group know if they're aware of Magic or Puella Magi, and will reveal whatever else they end up revealing from their reactions. Of course the Puella Magi/Servant should be someone that they haven't encountered before and probably won't encounter in the future.

I realize that I'm late to this discussion, but having had the time to sit down and give it some thoughts of my own-

I really like these two ideas. It's a fun way to have Mami spread her influence through the rest of the gang and brings to us a non-chuuni way to christen the team, and if you can think of a not-contrived way to have us realize that Mami isn't just doing it 'because that's what magical girls do' and can get the others (both the players and the girls on Homura's team) on board with your idea, then I'll allow it even though our magic system doesn't properly play nice with modern magecraft- Though we might still need a boost from Wunjo courtesy of Mami in order to brute-force our way into the power of positive thinking cursing.

Though, word of caution- In order for the 'puella magi holy quintet' part to work when we invoke it, we will have to be completely on board with accepting Oriko and Kirika as teammates (and with Oriko at 4 and Kirika at 3, we're not yet close to accepting either), and we have to be completely on board with accepting them as teammates in their own right and not just as replacements for Madoka and Sayaka, because the 'puella magi holy quintet' that we remember had Madoka and Sayaka and it won't work if we're still thinking of them when we invoke the name.

[X] Practice Runes

This time, in regards to everyone practicing their runes and sharing the results of their practice, everyone is unanimous in their agreement.

Well, no, not really. As soon as it looks as though everyone is in agreement, Kure Kirika raises her hand. "I, uh, I can't really show you what improvements I've been making."

You try to think back to the rune that Kure Kirika had chosen- Runes, you correct yourself, remembering how she had added a second rune to her practice sheet a few nights ago, much to your surprise at the time. Fehu and Gebo, you remember, both have visible applications, so "Why can't you show us?"

"You know how I have shit for mana?" Yes, that's one way of putting it, but you're confident that her choice of servant isn't helping her any with that problem. "Well, I picked those runes because they have applications that can help mitigate that problem. When I use them together, I can take mana from just about anywhere and transfer it over to myself." Huh. Kure Kirika slides up beside Mikuni Oriko, cuddling her like an oversized stuffed toy. "Oriko's my favourite to suck mana from since she's got so much of it, and the transfer's easiest when the other person is willing to give, but uh, it's kind of... You know, something you do in private."

"But, if you can take mana from sources other than Mikuni-san, then there must be a way for you to demonstrate that outside of your..." Tomoe-san struggles to find an apt descriptor for Kure Kirika's self-admitted activities. "...Private, methods with Mikuni-san; right?"

"Well, I do have another method, I've been practicing ways to do it where I can suck mana from enemies too, but-" Kure Kirika stares at you. You don't like that look in her eyes as she stares at you. "-someone had to go and curse me to where I can't hurt any of you without it killing me, and what I came up with would definitely fall in line with 'hurting' you." Kure Kirika calls up her Soul Gem; for once, it's shining a bright orange, with only minimal corruption dancing at the fringes. "... I guess though, if you really wanted to see, I could do something small and just top myself off."

Kure Kirika places her Soul Gem atop the sandstone table so everyone can see it, and Mikuni Oriko does the same, placing her emerald Soul Gem beside the orange gem of her lover. A marker appears in Kure Kirika's hand, seemingly from nowhere, and she turns to Mikuni Oriko asking "How do you want it; hand, or tongue?"

"Hand," Mikuni Oriko says, her emerald eyes darting out to stare at you, Tomoe-san, and Kyouko. "We don't need then watching us while we're making out."

Kure Kirika draws each of her runes one her palms, one each on each palm, and takes Mikuni Oriko's hands into her own. "You know I'm still going to kiss you, right?" before Mikuni Oriko can protest, their lips are locked. As thin trailing lines of violet flow from Mikuni Oriko's hands into Kure Kirika's, you watch as the tiniest sliver of emerald is stolen from Mikuni Oriko's Soul Gem, while the dancing corruption of Kure Kirika's is replaced with brilliant orange. When her Soul Gem is shining its brightest, the pair break their kiss, and Kure Kirika turns to you, saying "There. I hope you were watching, because as much as I'd love to do that again it won't really work again now that I'm at full."

Mikuni Oriko dabs at the corner of her mouth with a napkin, wiping her lips clean of the thin trail of saliva left behind by Kure Kirika's kiss. "Yes, well-" judging by her tone, she's trying to quickly put it behind her that you all were made to watch her and Kure Kirika kissing for at least a solid minute. "-I've had decent success expanding on the mobile barrier concept I was working on on Sunday." Three of her drones appear at her side, hovering with the noise of dragonflies. One of them passes close to your face, giving you a good look at the Othala rune that has been carved into its metallic facet. Golden light shines around the drones, and the three are linked by thin golden lines. In-between them, when the light hits just right you can make out a pane like golden glass; that must be the barrier.

"I started out only being able to make a three-point barrier, but with a little effort I can push it to a seven-point barrier." As Mikuni Oriko speaks, more drones join her side, linking up with the three already circling around her. Four, five, six, seven, just as she said. Their formation has grown large enough to shield her entire body. "Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get a good feel for its effectiveness in real combat, and I have a feeling that Kirika is always going easy on me when I ask her to test its strength."

Kyouko grins, leaning towards Mikuni Oriko and her golden barrier with a predatory grin. "Ya want me to stick ya with my spear, see how well it holds up?"

"That's quite alright, Sakura-san." Mikuni Oriko snaps her fingers, and the seven-drone barrier formation breaks apart. "I do appreciate the willingness to help me, but I think I'll be able to continue testing on my own." Unsaid by words, but evident in both tone and facial expression, is the challenge so what can you do, Sakura-san?

"I... Can't really do much of anything, ta be honest." Kyouko's response comes as a surprise to you; she seemed to be making at least some progress in earlier session, so what's changed now? "I dunno what it is, but, what's it called, Berkano, just ain't working out th' way I'd been hoping. Maybe I need ta find a different rune, I dunno." Kyouko turns to Tomoe-san, and by the look on her face a thought has just struck. "Maybe Mami'd be a good fit fer Berkano, now that I' think about it. See, if ya put it all over yer ribbons, you could lay'em out all over th' place, an' rig it up like a spider web so that yer rune goes off whenever something trips a ribbon, an' lets ya know where they are."

Tomoe-san sits on Kyouko's words for a moment, sipping her tea as her eyes dart back and forth between Kyouko and something off in the distance. She sets her tea down, and says "You know, that's actually a very good idea, Sakura-san; thank you. I think I'll definitely take up Berkano, now that you mention it. But what about you? What will you take up instead?"

"I dunno. I'll give it sum thought. Maybe Sowilo, like Lancer suggested. That way I'd at least have sumthin I can use ta hit people with if my spear can't reach'em."

And now, it seems, that all eyes are on you.

Most of the vote was actually stapled on to the previous vote, in the space where the mid-vote to agree with Tomoe-san was placed. Today's post consists entirely of the last part of the vote, concerning what the girls are able to do with their runes. I ask that everyone re-read the previous post in addition to reading the current post.

Welp, now we gotta see what this mysterious capstone is (at level 5). So, uh, is Mami going to show off her Rune at all, or is she waiting until after they practice like (maybe) Homura?

Mami's work on Wunjo is entirely non-visible, as she's focusing its application on party-wide combat buffs. If we get into a fight with a witch, we'll be able to see her progress, but outside of combat it would be difficult for her to show us what she's accomplished.

Well, yeah, I mostly meant is she going to share with the group or not. Such as listing potential applications of her Rune when in combat with others.
