[X] Plan Ahnenerbe (part 1)
"... Are you sure you don't need me to come home and make something for dinner?"
While Kirika does her homework, and Minako watches, taking notes as she looks over her daughter's work, you've decided that it's time to think about dinner. For you and Homura, mostly, but "I'll be dining out with the others tonight. I wish Kirika could join us, but I'm hoping that with your help she'll bring her grades up enough to where things can go back to normal soon enough" apparently your services won't be necessary tonight. "So you're free to do whatever you'd like to for dinner tonight. Maybe you've got something planned with the Kures?"
You don't; or at least, you didn't until Homura said anything; but now "I'll see what I can make for them. I brought over plenty of vegetables yesterday, and Minako has plenty of frozen meals I can spruce up, so I'm sure I can come up with something that'll make for a nice dinner."
"If it's you, I'm sure they'll be happy to eat whatever you make. Take care, Archer; I'll see you tonight."
After you break from your conversation with Homura, you decide to take a second glance through the homework you've helped Kirika with tonight to see if you can glean anything that would be helpful to either mother or daughter in the future. Mathematics is definitely her weak point. She excels at her literature assignments and can wrap her brain around her biology homework, if she puts her mind to it, but she's really struggling to make sense of trig and geometry. Maybe she needs help from an actual remedial instructor, and not just some afterschool advice from a guy who hasn't been in school in a lifetime.
"I can't take this anymore!" Kirika cries, as her head flops down on the table. "If I have to make sense of one more circle I'll barf!"
Minako squirrels her daughter's worksheet out from under her head, and after looking it over says "Come on pumpkin, just two more problems and you're done."
"I don't wanna!"
Minako rolls her eyes, passing the worksheet back to Kirika as she asks "What's it going to take to get you to do this?"
"I wanna see Oriko! When I'm doing homework with Oriko, she'll always give me a kiss for every problem I do." They come with neither the same passion nor intensity, and you'd be seriously concerned if they did, but Minako leans over, giving her daughter a kiss on the cheek for each problem she's done so far. Well, you can't say she didn't ask for it. Kirika, however, is not amused. "It's just not the same."
"You never used to have a problem with my kisses," Minako says, to her daughter's continued unamused stare. But the mother Kure smiles for her dour daughter, and says "You'll be able to see Oriko tomorrow, and you can get as many kisses from her then as you'd like; just as long as you're doing your homework."
"Don't worry, I already told Oriko that I need to keep my grades up if I want to see her."
"And I'll be calling to make sure she hears it from me, too." Even if it's just for a split-second, Kirika's face gives it away, and Minako smirks, saying "Ah-ha! I knew I was right to want to call her. You were planning on goofing off tomorrow, weren't you?" A soft "... Yes mommy" and a flick of the "Ow!" ear are soon to follow for the daughter Kure as her plan is revealed. "I can't let you out of my sight for a moment, can I?" Minako shakes her head, and says to you "It's a good thing we'll have eyes on her for as much of tomorrow night as Oriko will; otherwise she'd never get her homework done."
You nod; tomorrow is when you'll all be having dinner with the Kanames, and outside of attempting to set you up with Minako you don't know what your host has planned for tomorrow. Still, "I should have some time before dinner to help Kirika with her homework before we send her off to her girlfriend."
With a little bit of urging from her mother, Kirika finally manages to complete the remaining two problems, finishing all of her homework for the night. "Oh, man, it feels good to be done!" she proclaims, exaggeratedly stretching her arms over her head as if yawning. Finishing her routine, she turns to Minako and asks "Hey mom, what's for dinner? We got any of Archer's fish left over from last night?"
Minako shakes her head; the four of you finished all the fish last night. "I don't know," she says, her eyes flashing in your direction. "I guess that'll depend on what Archer's plans are." She turns to look at you in full, and asks "Were you planning on heading home to have dinner with Homura?"
"Nah," you say. "She told me she was going to have dinner out with her friends. Looks like it'll just be the three of us tonight. Not sure what I want to make, though..." You take stock of the food that's available to you. Some carrots and onions, some peppers, and some eggs, along with a veritable medley of frozen food. You've never seen so much frozen food before in your life. Is this what Minako and Kirika have been living on for the past seven years? You grab two bags at random; gyoza and frozen miso soup mix, with a package of frozen cabbage rolls making itself apparent once those two are in your hands. You don't even want to look deeper than that. You'll have to find the time to go grocery shopping with Minako at some point.
"I know it must look terrible to you," Minako says. You're too busy looking through the fridge to see her, but you can hear her chair squeak, and a few moments after that she's at your side, staring at the unholy mess that is her frozen food aisle of a fridge. "But it's all I've had time to make these past seven years."
"Well, that's all going to change," you say. "Hopefully soon you'll be able to cook for yourself, and you won't need any of this stuff anymore." That being said... "For tonight, though, I think I know what we're going to have..."
Your mission, starting tonight, is to clear the Kure fridge of as much of its frozen meals as possible so you can help Minako to fill her kitchen with real food. By the amount of things stuffed into her fridge, that's going to be as long-term a mission as helping her study for her Cert or helping to bring Kirika's grades up; fortunately, you have a plan.
"It's not the greatest meal I've ever cooked," you say, well aware of the limited resources with which you had to work; and in fact it's more than a little shameful that you even had to resort to using so many frozen items. You'll definitely have to find the time to go grocery shopping with Minako at some point. You can't work like this. "But I'm hoping you'll both enjoy it all the same." Tonight's dinner involves a mix of frozen meals and real food in a manner that's both efficient and appealing to the taste buds; frozen fried rice tossed in a skillet with fresh vegetables and a little soy sauce; frozen miso soup, with fresh vegetables instead of the dehydrated 'vegetables' that came packaged with the soup mix; the frozen gyoza and cabbage rolls, steamed over the stovetop, not microwaved. "Now, let's eat."
"Well, how is it?"
"It's alright, I guess." Kirika says to Minako as she picks at her food; tonight's dinner clearly isn't as big a hit with her as last night's fish was. "I mean, it's better than if you'd just thrown it in the microwave, but after having Oriko's cooking, or the fish from last night, it's just so hard to go back to the frozen stuff, you know?"
Minako smiles for her daughter, and says to her "Don't worry, pumpkin. Soon I'll know enough about cooking that I can start making real food that tastes like the stuff Archer makes." While tonight's dinner was far from your best showing, it was a valuable learning experience for Minako; hopefully she'll be able to use what you've taught her tonight to make further frozen meals taste a bit more palatable in the future, at least until they're all gone and she doesn't need to rely on them ever again.
As for yourself... You take your first tentative bite into one of the gyoza you had Minako steam. You've never had frozen gyoza before, but it's not actually the worst thing in the world. The fried rice is easily the best part of tonight's dinner, in your opinion. It's hard to screw up rice, and after tossing it in the skillet with fresh vegetables you can't even tell that the rice came out of the freezer.
Conversation over dinner is modest, if that, with most of the conversation occurring with Minako getting reacquainted with her daughter, after her extended stay with Mikuni; until she asks you a question you hadn't been expecting. Playing with a few strands of her long, dark-chocolate locks, Minako asks "Hey, since Homura's going to be busy tonight, did you want to maybe spend the night here?" This is a trap, isn't it? "I know we don't have that much space, but I can make the couch as comfy as you need, if you'd like to stay."
This is definitely a trap, you think; and yet, that doesn't stop you from saying "Thank you. I think I'd like that." You hope this doesn't turn out to be a trap.
