"... And he asked unto him, 'What is thy name?'," Mikuni Oriko says with a trembling voice, her hand tightly clenched around the crucifix hanging from her neck as she looks out at the mass of familiars comprising what had once been the river. "And he answered saying, 'My name is Legion, for we are the one who is many'." Standing beside her lover in silence, Kure Kirika can do no more than to offer her a hand to squeeze for support.
"How the fuck are we s'pposed ta beat this?" Kyouko asks, placing her hands on her hips.
How the fuck indeed.
You aren't sure what you had been expecting to face when you envisioned the battle against this 'Witch of the Black Mountain', but this completely defies any expectations you might have held.
It's horrifying; and no doubt the familiars still inside peoples' homes won't stop just once they've eaten everyone inside... You take a deep breath, trying to calm your nerves and steel your resolve for the fight in front of you. "Our only hope is that Archer's plan actually works," you say, not entirely believing that it will now that the reality of battle is staring you in the face. "We'll do whatever we can to buy him time, and once he's dealt with the familiars' intangibility, we'll hit them and the witch with everything we've got."
"Okay, but uh, which part is the witch?"
"It doesn't matter." Kyouko doesn't look like she likes your response, but it isn't as though you have a better one for her. "Anything that we can hit is a target when our target is the size of a skyscraper." You turn to Tomoe-san, and call out to her "Ribbons, now!" in the hopes that hearing your voice will snap the horrified expression off of her face and get her into gear.
The horror on Tomoe-san's face wavers, before it is wiped away by grim determination. "Right," she says, sending her ribbons to wrap around each of your ankles. "And the river as well? I'm assuming that Archer will need a way to get in close to the witch without being made prey by its familiars."
"A bridge would be nice, if you think you can manage one."
Tomoe-san winks, saying "Child's play" as she casts her ribbons out and over the roiling mass of familiars. Four strands are sent out, tying themselves together into the shape of a bridge, but as they reach the halfway point, at least thirty familiars shoot out of the river to tear her work to shreds. Upon completing their task, most of the familiars recede back into the river, but one familiar stays above the roil for a few seconds longer, casting its blank-white gaze in your direction before receding.
They know you're here. They're watching; waiting for you to slip up so they can feast. "Well, I guess a bridge is out of the question then."
"Then we'll need some other way of getting across the river to the-" You aren't actually sure whether the massive statue is the witch, or if the witch is somewhere on top of the statue. Previous timelines as well as the manner in which the witch was described to you in this timeline would lead you to believe in the latter. "-Whatever that thing is." You've only known of one witch that was strong enough to exist under its own power outside of its labyrinth; and if this witch is as strong as the
Walpurgisnacht of previous timelines, then you're dreading what
this timeline's
Walpurgisnacht will look like. "I'm hoping that perhaps Caster can supply us with something, preferably something that can get us up and over the familiars' zone of control."
Because you sure as shit don't have anything large enough to transport your entire team.
The best you can realistically do is cram one, maybe two of your allies into the cab of a Type 88 and have anyone who can hanging off of the missile pods on the back; but then you'd have to drive it straight through the river of familiars. No, you'll need something with flight capabilities in order to get Archer within range of the witch.
And speaking of Archer... "Are you seeing this? How far out are you from my position?"
You almost leap out of your skin when you feel something strong clamp down on your shoulder, but fortunately your servant's voice saying "About this far" is enough to calm your fears that a familiar had latched on. "This is looking pretty shitty, all things considered."
"But your Noble Phantasm will still be enough to defeat it, correct?"
"I can guarantee that my Noble Phantasm will cut the familiars off from their intangibility, but destroying it is going to come down entirely to how tough a nut the witch is to crack." Golden bolts rain down from above the black clouds, but they fail to do any significant damage to the black mountain. "Looks like it's going to be a tougher nut to crack than I thought."
"What do you mean?" Archer doesn't have to answer your question, because as soon as you've asked it, the black clouds part to reveal a-
You aren't actually sure what to call it, actually. It's gold, with translucent green wings and a fuselage shape that gives the entire construct the appearance of an insect, but with the size of an Air Self-Defense Force F-15J. The flying vehicle - you
are confident that the construct is a flying vehicle of some kind, but
what kind it might be completely eludes you - swoops down low, coming in for a vertical landing that gives you a glimpse of the person sitting in what you presume to be the control seat.
It's Caster.
"My master requested the use of a flying vehicle," Tomoe-san's golden servant says, motioning for you and Archer to embark with him. "I trust the
Vimana is adequate enough for your needs?"
You nod, still in awe at the sight of Caster's flying machine; almost to the point where you neglect to spot that his robes of red and blue have been exchanged for a full suit of golden plate armour. "This should do just fine," you say, turning to your servant to ask him "How close do you need to be to to the witch for it to be in range of your Noble Phantasm?"
"Actually, right here is close enough, though I'm sure Caster's
Vimana will come in handy once the battle really gets going."
"I see."
You wish your servant would have said something before making you call in for air support- Not that you don't appreciate the air support, but "If you could use your Noble Phantasm at this range, then why are you waiting?"
"Normally, a servant would need permission from their master to activate their Noble Phantasm. As an Archer, my Independent Action frees me from this constraint, but I still want to hear you say it." Your servant looks at you, and with a faint smile adds "Consider it a sign of trust between us."
"I understand." You won't need to force Archer to obey with a Command seal; your desires are one and the same in this moment. "Archer, you are to use your Noble Phantasm and sever the witch's familiars from their intangibility. I won't accept failure."
"Well, alright," your servant says, taking a step forward; then another, and again, until he has passed you and positioned himself at the front of the line. "But when you see what it is for yourself, don't say I didn't warn you." Archer holds out his hand, and chants a line you've become all too familiar with during your time together.
"I am the bone of my sword"
"Steel is my body and fire is my blood"
"I have created over a thousand blades"
"Unknown to Death,"
"Nor known to Life."
"Have withstood pain to create many weapons"
"Yet, those hands will never hold anything"
"So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works."
Your servant burns like a flickering candle as he speaks his chant, until at last he finishes, and the world is engulfed in fire.
You see your servant,
standing alone atop a hill of swords that stretches as far as your eyes can see, and then some, to a boundary ringed in flame at the edges of its infinite existence. Overhead, the dull amber light of a setting sun that cannot be seen illuminates the constantly ticking gear mechanisms that span the heavens alongside the clouds. The city of Mitakihara is nowhere to be seen, but the looming shape of the witch and its black mountain still stand before you and your allies, separated by the river of writhing black familiars between you and it.
Your heart stops in your chest as you realize the truth behind what Archer had said to you; that you would need to see his Unlimited Blade Works for yourself to understand why he was hesitant to speak of it.
You've seen this hill of blades before, in your dreams. That wasn't a memory from your servant in life; that was an image of the world that exists inside of his mind.
His Noble Phantasm is a labyrinth. "Archer, what is this?" you call out. Your voice is shaky, but of your allies you are the only one who has managed to compose their wits enough to speak up. "Why did you conceal from me the fact that your Noble Phantasm was a labyrinth?"
Your servant speaks in a solemn tone, yet there still remains a hint of his usual playfulness when he says "The answer to that question should be obvious; shouldn't it master?"
"You lied to me. You said that all you could do was create swords, not... Not transport us all into your labyrinth!"
Archer shakes his head, responding to your accusations in a very Incubator-esque manner when he says "I never lied to you; this really is all I'm capable of. You just misinterpreted what that meant." Your servant waves his hand, and row after row of sword instantly springs up beneath his shadow like mushrooms after the rain falls. The wind picks up, blowing in dust and soot from the fires burning in the distance; and in that dull wind your servant's hair is blown down, making him look for a moment like the young boy you often see in your dreams. "You see, I don't create swords. I create a world in which there are infinite swords."
Archer's face hardens, and the wind returns his silver-grey hair to its normal position as he says to you "That's the only magic allowed to Emiya Shirou."
