If we just keep checking the other's edits, we should probably be starting earlier in the thread to make room for them all.

And speaking of edits, as soon as we have ourselves the Saber servant I'm going to have to edit Kyubey out of the character list. I'll need to bump him off to make room for the profile picture of Saber, and since everything's gone tits-up completely out of his control and he's even done scraping the bottom of Mitakihara's barrel for potential magical girls sans Madoka, who he's still trying to work on every night he's not really a major player anymore.
C'mon, you gotta instill some sort of grand plan to justify Kyuubey sticking to the background of the quest! :p Maybe in their last fight with Assassin he scavenged some of False Assassin's spiritual residue and is experimenting on it by trying to imbue it into the contracting process of Puella Magi, or it's trying to see what happens when the spiritual residue is melded with a Grief Seed/Witch? Or maybe Kyuubey's tracked down the Greater Grail's location to Fuyuki somehow and plans to siphon off some Angra Mainyu juice to use in said experiments? There's plenty of room for insane occurrences and conflicts with Kyuubey on the job!
I know you're being sarcastic, but I will never not be mad that they did that.
Eh, it's more like they implied that Archer could use High-Speed Incantation when he can't, and I actually really wanted to hear him chant the whole thing.

Sorry mate, but Kyubey's making pudding at 4 in the morning. He's lost control of his life, his quota's gone to shit, and this city no longer makes any sense to him. He's got other things to worry about right now than staying relevant to our quest. But he will be back for the sequel.
Good to know Kyuubey has a part to play in the future, since it hasn't done much thus far aside from pester Madoka.

Oh, and forgot to mention, but what's with this "when you summon Saber" business? We'd never lower ourselves to summoning Saber, we must prevent Saber's summoning at all cost for the entirety of the quest! /s

In all seriousness I'm eager to see how you get Saber to finally be summoned by Homura and co, as Homura's probably not going to directly ask any of her non-Puella Magi friends if they could summon a Servant to partake in the Murder Death Kill.

EDIT: Also completely forgot to ask, but where's Bazett? What's she doing? I'm guessing she's on Vimana?

Madoka is going to pull a Shirou and summon Saber by complete accident with little to know idea of what is actually going on until afterwards.

I'd genuinely be shocked if she didn't if we delay Saber's summoning for too long. I mean, one of her elements is literally Leyline; she'd probably be the first the Grail chooses to accidentally summon Saber considering she'd shine so bright on the magical energy radar that she's shield any other contenders by her mere presence.

Okay, so you know how in Pokemon Yellow, the Eeveelution your rival ends up with is determined by whether you win or lose a certain combination of battles against him? It's like that; I've set a series of flags across the background of the thread, and depending on how we act when we check one of those flags, that ultimately determines which of our potential candidates gets the Saber.
So far, of the flags we've checked we've already eliminated one of the four potentials from the running. Which one that is, what flags we've checked, and what we need to look out for to know when we're checking the next flag, I won't say. That's on the players to figure out. I'm assuming we want Hitomi to still be the master of Saber, yes? Then we'll have to act carefully, and keep abreast of what potentially flag-worthy decisions we make that might eliminate Hitomi from the running or see someone else summon Saber before she can.

Day 31 Chapter 12
[X] Plan Unknown To Death, Nor Known To Life

On the ground below, you see that many familiars have been frozen and either torn asunder or reduced to ice powder by your strike, but an ocean cannot be drained with just a few drops; and though the Black Mountain is splattered with patches of ice it still stands in stark defiant of your attack. The Grief dampening from Tomoe-san's earlier application is still active on you, thankfully, or that attack would have ripped through your Soul Gem in an instant. You hastily apply a Grief Seed, and try to think of what the next step should be to bring down this witch.

Maybe a single high-powered strike wasn't enough to finish the job, so how about many? That's the train of thought that leads you to call out "Mikuni Oriko! Kure Kirika! Have your servants unleash their Noble Phantasms on the witch!" "Kyouko, I'm having Mikuni Oriko and Kure Kirika unleash Lancer and Berserker's Noble Phantasms. Once they've done that, can you have Rider do the same?"

"I mean, it'll prolly cost ya a Grief Seed on account'a how much it takes outta me, but sure, I can have Rider hook ya up. Just gimme the signal whenever yer ready."

"Right. I'm sure you'll know when the time is right, but I'll give you the signal once they're done, just as you've asked."
You turn to the pair of lovers, and say to them "Kyouko will be having Rider join in. We'll attack in sequence. Lancer first, then Berserker, and then Rider. Hopefully this will be enough to take down the witch."

"Right!" Mikuni Oriko tears her concentration away from the battle, calling out to her servant "Lancer, activate your Noble Phantasm at once!" While her clothes block your view of the flashing red, the pulse you feel on the wind and the energy surrounding Lancer are proof enough that Mikuni Oriko has used a Command Seal to empower her servant's blow. A second surge of power accompanies the first, and Mikuni Oriko adds "And again I command you, Lancer- When you strike, you are to envision the witch as though it were Sigurd, and strike at it without mercy!"

"Of course, master," Lancer says, ceasing her onslaught of flame and calling upon her massive spear. Tomoe-san has seen Lancer's Noble Phantasm in action; she said, the night in which she and Mikuni Oriko fought for the first time, that seeing Lancer activate her Noble Phantasm was like watching a meteor come crashing to earth; and as the white-haired Valkyrie ascends to the highest point in the infinite sky, wreathing herself in blue flame, her spearhead growing in size as she chants, you find yourself curious to see how close Tomoe-san's description comes to the real thing.

"It's troubling. My power is..."
"Love. Hate. Love. Hate. Love. Love. Love, Love, Love...
"Brynhildr Romantia!"
Lancer's flame-wreathed rocket towards the Black Mountain is, exactly as Tomoe-san described, evocative of a falling star, and the crash as her massive flaming spearhead collides with the Black Mountain sends a thunderous shockwave radiating outwards to the bounds of Archer's infinity. The strike is enough to shatter the ice-covered patches speckling the Black Mountain, creating massive structural weak points, but from those newly-formed holes pour out more familiars.

"If one wasn't enough, then how about two?" The jagged shards on the back of Kure Kirika's hand flash crimson, as one of the three Seals burns away to empower her command. "Berserker, activate your final Noble Phantasm!"

"Are you sure you'll be alright, dearest?" Mikuni Oriko asks, touching a hand to her lover's cheek. "You're already looking a little pale; are you sure your body can take the strain?"

Kure Kirika is indeed looking paler thans he had been at the start of the battle, but her breathing sounds normal to you and her Soul Gem appears to be mostly stable, so it comes as no surprise to you when she answers her lover's question with "Yeah, I should be fine." She smiles, and returns the touch to her cheek with one of her own. Cupping Mikuni Oriko's chin, she adds "But I'd be a lot better if you'd give me a kiss."

"Not now, dearest." At least one of them is sensible enough to know that the battle should be below them, and not in their mouths. "But when we get home, we can kiss as much as you'd like."

It's at this point that you decide to stop paying attention to the pair, and focus your concentration on Berserker. Archer included, you've now seen the Noble Phantasms of each of your allied servants; though while Berserker's transformation ability is strong, and his ability to make any weapon his own is equally so, you are still curious to see what his final Noble Phantasm might be, the one called "Arondight" which was only unlocked once his Mad Enhancement was lifted.

Berserker casts aside the last sword in his hand, skewering it through the body of a familiar as he tosses it aside. In his hands forms another sword, dyed in its entirety a rich dark blue. Even from this distance, just to gaze upon it is to know the power contained within the blade. Tightly, Berserker grasps the hilt with both hands, speaking a chant similar to Archer had done earlier. His chant is in English, but you've taken English class so many times that understanding the words of Kure Kirika's servant is no problem. Which then reaises the question of whether even she can understand her servant. Her grades are quite poor, and she may have only just squeaked by in English without knowing enough to understand her servant's native tongue.

"Oath to my King!"
"Reaching the very end, beyond the boundaries."
"King on the other side, look at this light!"

"Arondight - Overload!!"
As Berserker speaks, his blade shines a vibrant clear blue, and you find yourself likening its colour to the waters of a lake. With those words spoken Berserker, who had been steadily raising his blade above his head as he spoke, brings the sword down swiftly, and a brilliant cone of clear blue light is sent coursing across the battlefield, destroying everything in its wake. It tears apart the ground of Archer's reality, tears apart any familiars that had dared to cross paths with the radiant light, and it tears through the Black Mountain as a hot knife would through butter.

Yet, when the brilliant lake-blue light fades, the Black Mountain remains standing. A massive gash has been torn clear through it, giving you a view of the infinite expanse which lies beyond it, but despite the damage dealt to it the Black Mountain is still standing. Something moves from within the massive divide; more familiars, slinking forth to replenish the ranks of their brethren felled in Berserker's attack. Just what will it take to bring this witch down?

"Kirika!" Mikuni Oriko screams the name of her lover, and your eyes are torn from the spectacle of Berserker's attack to see what could have caused such a reaction. "Are you alright?"

"I'm... fine..." Kure Kirika manages to say, though her appearance says otherwise. Thick trails of blood drip from her eyes, ears, nostrils, and mouth. Her skin has gone a deathly pale, and she appears to also be having difficulty keeping her balance. "I just... Need to lie down for a bit..." And lie down she does; her legs give out, and before Mikuni Oriko can reach out a hand to catch her, her lover has tumbled off the side of Caster's flying vessel.

"Kirika!"

"Oi, Spooky, what're ya waiting for? That was the signal, wasn't it? So should I have Rider get going or not?"

[ ] Wat do?

[x] Tell Kyouko that Kirkia has gone overboard and we need a clear landing zone.
-[x] Dive after Kirika.
--[x] Catch her.
---[x] Reinforce your body and try to take most of the impact.
----[x] Apply Grief Seeds to Kirika ASAP

Mami should be the one to deal with Kirika I think, she's on Vimana and her ribbons are perfect for grabbing Kirika without putting anyone in danger from the familiar mob below.

:| If Homura does that, her body would die considering she's only really dabbled in reinforcing objects. All of her organs would explode, or if she's not reinforcing those then all of her blood vessels would burst and her muscles would become mince meat. She needs to take things slowly in learning how to reinforce her body, and she certainly isn't going to do it in the middle of a big battle without any experience in it.

[X] Plan Have Withstood Pain To Create Many Weapons
-[X] Call out to Mami to have her ask Caster to use Vimana's insane speed and precision to catch Kirika
-[X] Give Kyoko the go ahead, while also telepathically asking Archer to use one of his Noble Phantasms at the Witch at the same time; if one Noble Phantasm at a time is unable to take out the which, then maybe it's time to double up on it?
-[X] (Archer) Fire off the broken Durindana Pilum arrow as you already planned, but sync it with Rider's collision with Elsa Maria

Vimana is incredibly fast, faster than any modern jet, with an insane amount of coordination, acceleration/deceleration, and precision. It would be simple for Caster to drive Vimana far quicker than it would take for Kirika to get anywhere close to the ground.

She needs to take things slowly in learning how to reinforce her body, and she certainly isn't going to do it in the middle of a big battle without any experience in it.
This is a very good point. We should have made sure we knew how much strain using Arondight would put on Kirika's Soul Gem and made sure she could actually handle it, before having her servant use an untested NP in the middle of a raid. Now we're down a party member and our cleric is going to be pissed that her girlfriend got Leeroy Jenkins'd.

In all fairness, I was under the impression that Kirika wouldn't be taking such bodily strain anymore now that Berserker isn't wreaking havoc on her through their bond due to Mad Enhancement. Using a simple A~A++ NP alone shouldn't do much considering she more than likely has more Prana than Homura (due to timeline shenanigans), and by using a Command Seal it would lessen the strain of Prana being used since it would contribute its store of Prana to whatever it's being used for, assuming Berserker wasn't against the order for whatever reason forcing the Command Seal to divert Prana towards submission.

Hasn't it been pointed out that Kirika has the smallest reserves out of the Holy Quintet?
Yes, it has been mentioned numerous times, both IC and OOC, that Kirika has about 1/2 the reserves that a normal puella magi should have, to the point where she needs regular mana transfers from Oriko just to make sure that she has enough on tap for both herself and Berserker; and while Enetious is correct when he says
In all fairness, I was under the impression that Kirika wouldn't be taking such bodily strain anymore now that Berserker isn't wreaking havoc on her through their bond
he does miss that it was because of the way in which Kirika's body was diverting mana towards her legs, away from other, more vital bodily functions, which coupled with Berserker's absurd mana demands to put her in considerable agony just from the exertion of Berserker fighting. It had nothing to do with his Mad Enhancement- The Mad Enhancement was what was messing with her telepathy and giving her horrible nightmares.

She doesn't have to worry about being drained just from manifesting Berserker any more because her mana is being routed through her body in the correct way, but "no longer bleeding from every orifice just from manifesting your servant" doesn't instantly mean "can provide for a full-power A++ NP and come out peachy keen". She's still working with a sub-3000 reserve of mana and a servant that guzzles mana like a Hummer.

I won't put all of the blame on us, though. While we should have thought to check to make sure she was good to go, that's also something that Oriko should have thought to do, rather than trusting in Kirika's word that she could handle it.

Hm... I don't know, it just seems off to me. None of the Masters in Apocrypha have this problem, despite many of them having vastly lower reserves than Kirika, and in the Fate VN Saber is able to use her NP without a steady stream of Prana - only a contract - from Shirou without any backlash. It just seems weird. Is this confirmation that the Grail isn't aiding in supporting Servants whatsoever - or only to the barest minimal extent? If that's the case, then having any non-Puella Magi summon Saber would probably be a death wish to the Master in question, would it not? To put it in perspective, Kirika still has much more Prana reserves than Tohsaka Rin, who was considered to be a top-grade Master.

"the Grail", huh. Do we even know what caused the current War to even be possible in the first place and to be tied to the Puella Magi system established by incubators? Is it Alaya or Gaia, initiating "Grail" War using Counter Force to prevent Madoka's apotheosis and Homura's consequent peritheosis? Is it Madokami and/or Akuma Homura themselves, perhaps also using Counter Force, meddling with events for… reasons… without making their plans known to their unascended selves? Or is it, perhaps, Sakura, using her lingering connection to the 4th Grail to summon heroes from all kinds of places and ages for a single purpose — participation in The Ultimate Cooking Contest? It could be litterally anything.
(It's probably the latter, I'd guess. It just makes the most sense :V)

Here is the problem, as I saw it as soon as this became the HA timeline- The Grail was destroyed seven years ago, and now to maintain a servant one needs a Soul Gem or similar mana battery. However, this being the HA timeline, we know there are still servants meandering around in Fuyuki, which means that it should also be possible to maintain a servant without a Soul Gem. What this means is that, in order to deal with the fact that my universe is breaking its own rules you know, just like Nasu, I have to make some compromises, and the compromise I came up with is to treat masters and magical girls are separate entities for mana consumptive purposes, in the likely scenario that I needed to have both magical girl masters and non-magical girl masters appearing at the same time, where one would be an absolute curbstomp victory over the other without the above compromise; which isn't very fun if we have to fight but there's absolutely no contest between the two parties, a problem we already have thanks to Homura's timestop.

In other words, while as magical girls the only "normal" T-M character on par with any of the girls would be Ciel, as masters the girls are forced down to a "normal" level commensurate to their Soul Gem's reserves. We're about Rin-level, and Kirika is about Kariya-level. That conscious divide between a PM's skill as a magical girl and as a master is something I put in as a balancing element to keep things from being completely one-sided. What that means is that, if Homura and Rin were to get into a magical duel, Homura would stomp Rin flat with ease, but as masters they and their Archers would be evenly matched.

"the Grail", huh. Do we even know what caused the current War to even be possible in the first place and to be tied to the Puella Magi system established by incubators?
We do in fact know what set things off and altered the timeline to be that of half-Nasuverse (Alaya, sending EMIYA down to deal with some shit), but we don't know what caused servants to be attached to the magical girls, or why things have spiralled out of control from "just" some policing action by the Counter Force. We may never find out, either, because we're asking some pretty esoteric questions that may not actuallly have an answer we can conceptualize in the physical reality of a pre-Madokami 2011.

Day 31 Chapter 13
[X] Plan Have Withstood Pain To Create Many Weapons

"Kirika!"

Mikuni Oriko screams her lover's name as Kure Kirika plummets off of Caster's flying vehicle, likely unconscious after the strain put on her Soul Gem by her servant. Is this your fault? Are you to blame for having her use an untested Noble Phantasm, even knowing about her low mana reserves, without making sure it was safe for her to use it? Is Mikuni Oriko to blame, for trusting her lover's word rather than taking an extra second to verify for herself? You know she can receive mana from Mikuni Oriko- Could the kiss that Kure Kirika requested have given her enough mana to safely handle Berserker's attack?

Your musings are interrupted as Caster's flying vehicle makes a sudden and steep dive, almost throwing you off in the process; you weren't expecting such a large vessel to be able to turn faster than a modern fighter jet. And even after the various retrofits the Air Self-Defense Force's F-15Js are decades out of date- This thing feels like it handles better than even the Americans' F-22 Raptor; possibly even better than the experimental F-35A that the Americans tested five years ago. Faster than your mind can comprehend - certainly fast enough to, if not kill you, then to at least give you severe whiplash were you to attempt this maneuver with a fighter jet - Caster's flying vehicle has whipped around, and been brought in low enough for Tomoe-san to weave her ribbons into a net to catch the falling girl.

As soon as Tomoe-san's ribbons have caught her, Kure Kirika is taken in by Mikuni Oriko and laid down across the bow of Caster's vessel as it returns to its previous standing altitude. Kneeling down beside her, Mikuni Oriko hastily applies a Grief Seed to her lover's clouded Soul Gem, and even gives her the asked-for kiss for good measure as the corruption is drawn out. "Please wake up," she whispers, dabbing away the jam-like streaks of blood on her lover's face, but Kure Kirika's eyes remain closed.

She can't be dead. Mikuni Oriko and Berserker are too valuable to you for Kure Kirika to be dead.

"Oi, Spooky, what're ya waiting for? That was the signal, wasn't it? So should I have Rider get going or not?"

That's right; Kyouko has been waiting for you to give her the signal to have Rider attack. "Yes, that was the signal. We had a slight problem up here, but it's been dealt with-" you hope "-as best as can be. Rider is clear to launch his attack as soon as he's ready." You don't wait to hear Kyouko's enthusiastic response of "Got it!" before moving on to contact Archer, telling him "Even if it's one right after the other, we've seen that one Noble Phantasm at a time isn't enough to bring this witch down. We're have to hit it with two attacks simultaneously."

"What are you thinking?"
your servant asks, as you hear the whistling of Kyouko's servant for his thunderous chariot.

"While Rider attacks with his Noble Phantasm, you are to hit the witch with whatever you have that can break through its defenses. I'm hoping that two combined attacks will do what two consecutive attacks could not."

"Understood."

"While Rider attacks with his Noble Phantasm, you are to hit the witch with whatever you have that can break through its defenses. I'm hoping that two combined attacks will do what two consecutive attacks could not."

"Understood."

Rider has called for his chariot, and is currently mounting up. You know the speed of the hero Achilles is legendary; you'll have to work fast if you want to match his stride and time your shot with his. "Trace on." A sword, a spear; no matter the form, as long as the witch has any concept of defense the Durindana will penetrate it. Rider will protest, for sure, if he sees the spear of Hector of Troy in your hands, but he'll have to suck it up and deal with your decision like an adult.

Rider's chariot takes off with the sound of a thunderclap, racing towards the witch in a serpentine zigzag, trailing arcs of emerald and lime in his wake as he tears through the ocean of familiars, imagining that he imagines them as the army of Troy as he makes quick work of any familiar foolish enough not to part for his advance. That'll be your cue, then. The spear of Hector twists in your hands, taking the shape of an arrow as you nock it against the string of your bow. "Time to get serious..."

"Target confirmed. Angle set."

"Durindana!"

You feel sorry for Kyouko, who has to bear with it as Durindana tears through the sound barrier with a tremendous scream; but she can't afford to cover her ears now, not while she has half a dozen familiars swarming her. She's doing quite well for herself, alternating between close-up strikes with her spear and ranged bursts of flame from her conjured Sowilo rune. You recall your master saying that Kyouko was having the most trouble out of your allies in learning the runes, but seeing her now she's clearly overcome her earlier difficulties.

Your attack and Rider's meet the witch only a fraction of a second apart, but the time difference makes no difference to the witch. Your combined attacks crash against the witch, tearing it asunder and sending it crashing down upon the ocean of familiars. They swarm over the fallen arm which held the sunburst emblem, and you think to yourself this should be the end; right? It should , but the other half of the Black Mountain, the part of the statue on the other side of the massive gash torn by Berserker's Noble Phantasm, still stands, even after the half which held the sunburst emblem had fallen.

Somehow, it would appear that this witch is not out of the fight just yet. You only hope that you haven't made things even more difficult for you, your master, and your allies.

[x] Ask Archer what the stongest weapon he's got in here is.
-[x] Combo attack the Witch with said weapon and your Finitora Freccia

[X] Plan Yet, Those Hands Will Never Hold Anything
-[X] Ask Archer if he has anything stronger that will put this Witch down
-[X] Before anything else, consolidate your forces and make sure that Rider and Kyoko aren't in any danger of people overwhelmed; just because Rider has his Noble Phantasm of invincibility doesn't mean that a familiar in the sea before them won't accidentally brush against his ankle
-[X] (Archer) Focus on using your infinite expanse of blades to aid in the consolidation of your forces, and making sure everyone remains safe for the time being
--[X] Once everyone is safe and sound, shoot Gáe Bolg: Gouging Piercing Spear of Carnage in arrow form at Elsa Maria, assuming none of your allies are in the way to make sure none of them are caught in it's death field

Vimana should be a good way of picking up their stray team members. This vote has multiple purposes; namely to allow Bazett the time to get into the battlefield (hopefully) and show off a bit - if not actually killing the Witch, secondly to actually make sure no one dies by making sure we're not going into tunnel vision, and thirdly to save the killing blow for the end of the verse.

EDIT: We also have to be prepared to aid in the extermination of Elsa Maria's familiars in the city after she's died. As established in Madoka Magica, familiars don't die when the Witch does, which is why Puella Magi have to make sure to kill all of them to make sure another copy of the Witch doesn't hatch eventually.

I am so curious as to how that encounter will go; as you said SVS, none of the magical authorities in Mitakihara aren't well suited to preventing such a massive catastrophe and doing damage control.

If I may, I'm not actually seeing how your proposal will accomplish what you want, namely, allowing Bazett her time to shine. It looks like we're having Lancer Doggo Cu Cu Cachoo Archer ram his Gay Bulge into Elsa Maria at breakneck speed.

I have top men working on it right now.

Eh, it's more like assuming that it'll take some time and effort to actually extract everyone safely, and that if Bazett breaks in before Archer fires off his arrow she'll likely charge the Witch as she does, preventing Archer from firing his arrow until she's out of range of the Witch.
