Confringentur 2; a Madoka Magica / Fate/Stay Night sequel

Day 1 Chapter 9
[X] Doka birth anniversary plan

You try not to let Archer's bad news get to you, to make it through the day mentally unscathed by the news of what's to come; but you cannot. Instead, you at least try not to let it show on your face. Today is for Madoka, and it wouldn't do to make her worry about you on what is supposed to be her special day.

"Homura-chan, is something bothering you? You've had this look on your face ever since lunch ended."

Unfortunately, you haven't done a very good job of that, either. "Spooky's just being mopey 'cause Redman told her there's some shit brewing." Kyouko speaks before you have the chance to, giving Madoka a sanitised version of the information you had relayed to her and the others at lunch. "Course, we probably should'a figured some shit'd be brewing fer the past four weeks; but hey, what can ya do?"

In that instant, what you had been trying to prevent happens. "Oh no," Madoka says, immediately worrying about you, and on a day she should have no cause to worry, too. "That's terrible."

"Don't worry about it, Madoka," you say, pulling your girlfriend in close. "I'm not going to skip out on your birthday to deal with this. Archer didn't make it seem like it was that urgent." You know Archer's news is more urgent than what you've sold to Madoka, but you are resolved not to miss her birthday. Your team was already planning on meeting later tonight to discuss the fake Grief Seeds; this just means you'll have one more thing to add to tonight's agenda.

Beside you, Kyouko gives you a look, silently asking "You sure it's smart ta slack on this, Spooky? I mean, if Redman's getting his bad news from Goldie, then maybe this is a bigger deal than yer thinking."

"I'm under no illusions about how bad this looks, Kyouko. If my decision to postpone our meeting sets us back any, then I'll accept full responsibility. But I will not skip Madoka's birthday party."

"Alright, yer the boss."
Kyouko claps Madoka on the shoulder, saying "Me and Blueberry are gunna head over ta her place real quick ta grab yer presents, so you and Spooky can have some nice alone time together without us." Sayaka looks over at Kyouko, but before she can get out any more than a "We are?" Kyouko has her Blueberry girlfriend by the arm, her parting words "Mami'd said she'd be by in a half-hour, maybe a little more" as she and Sayaka tear down the street. Hitomi leaves after them to retrieve her own present for Madoka, leaving you and she well and truly alone.

Madoka's hand is warm in yours as fingers meet. "I'm glad to know you aren't going to miss my birthday party, Homura-chan," she says. "Even though there's no reason for you to put me over the safety of the rest of the city. If it's really that important, I'll understand if you and the others need to meet somewhere to discuss things instead."

You stop, placing your hands on your girlfriend's shoulders as you stare into her eyes. "Listen to me." You hate how forceful the words sound as they exit your mouth. "There is nothing in this world that is more important to me than you. So don't ever think you aren't worthy." While your words still have Madoka frozen, you lean in to steal a kiss from her parted lips. "I love you, Madoka. I did not walk through fire and death to make you cry on your birthday, not unless those tears are tears of joy."

Madoka smiles, and her smile is a balm for your soul. "I know, Homura-chan," she says, returning the favour with a kiss of her own. "I'm glad I have someone like you as my girlfriend."

You nod. "I'm glad to have you as my girlfriend too, Madoka."

You are reluctant to part ways with Madoka at the intersection near her house, but you have to return home to grab her present. Maybe you should also get changed into something nice, too. Madokas present is right where you left it, sitting on the edge of your desk. Beside it sits Amy, watching the door as you enter your room. "Were you guarding Madoka's present for me?" you ask her. Her reply is no more than a single "Mew" but it prompts you to respond with a "Good girl," giving her a few scratches behind the ear as you relieve her of guard duty.

"Now, maybe you can tell me what I should wear for the party?"

Another "Mew" from Amy is all the response you'll get, but it's more than enough. "An excellent choice," you say to her as you reach into your closet. "I'm sure Madoka will appreciate your astute sense of fashion." You change and grab your present for Madoka. The present Kirika gave you is still in your jacket pocket, and that goes with you as you don your jacket. "Okay, I've got my present, I've got Kirika's present." You call out as your put your shoes back on "I'm heading out now. I'll be back tonight after the meeting;" and then you're off.

Madoka's house is just a brisk ten-minute walk from your apartment, and "Wow," you say, as Madoka opens the door for you. "You really weren't kidding when you said your father had gone crazy preparing."

Madoka laughs, welcoming you in as you take in the decorations. "Yeah. I told papa he didn't have to do anything, but..." You take your shoes off, setting them aside a festive roll of pink streamers which hang from the ceiling. "Well, what's done is done." The pink streamers by the door are hardly the only decorations. There's all manner of decorations lining just about every visible corner, complete with a mobile which reads "Happy 16th Birthday Madoka" in bright glittery pink characters. "You, uh, you look good," Madoka says.

"Thanks," you say, setting your presents aside where Madoka shows you. "You do too."

It's subtle, but she's put on makeup for the occasion, and she's wearing a lovely white shirt and skirt that make her look positively angelic. And when she smiles... "Come on," Madoka says, taking you by your now-empty hand. "I'll take you to the others. We're still waiting for Tomoe-san, but we can still have fun now that you're here."

"That sounds lovely."

I don't want to do movies... This might be my personal bias leaking through but it's a reaaaaaaally shit thing to do for something other than a casual party. Unless it's specifically a movie party.

Talking suggestions?

Heh, I just realized that the game called avalon is kinda hilarious in this context.

Resistance or Avalon is how you lose friends and gain enemies in their place. Totally worth it though.

I have no idea what those games are, nor do I know if they're timeline-appropriate. Please, elaborate.

Imperium is a nigh impossibly complex board. Typical playtime for a short game is like ... Four hours if you speed run it. Really the suggestion was a joke though sayaka seems like the type of person who might like it.

Resistance is... A party game.

Best way to explain is this. I can explain it better if this fails.

If not some type of food, I imagine Kyouko getting the new "Just Dance" game as a present instead.

As for games to play, I personally nominate either Mario Kart or Mario Party; whichever one makes you wanna rage-quit more. Blue Shells and Stealing Stars are a great way to test Friendships!

But is it period-appropriate? Is this even a game the girls would have access to; or would they have to play some generic, non-branded version like Mafia/Werewolf/Secret Hitler/whatever you want to call your specific variant of this sort of game?

Isn't there a fancomic of the girls playing Mario Kart where Homura screws everyone else over just so Madoka can win?

Resistance came out in 2010 and Avalon 2012... I suspect at least resistance
Good to know.
I think the original poster deleted it but I found a fandub here. Turn the volume off if you don't like that stuff.
That's the one.

Anyway, I do hate that I'm just throwing the planning for this party all on you guys. I'll have something for you in the way of actual direction once we've moved on to the meat and potatoes.

Hmm....maybe ask Madoka how she did on her exam? Homura was curious about that earlier.

Oh yeah! We should totally get the gossip on Hitomi about her new boyfriend!

Man, thinking about topics to discuss is tricky....

Thinking about it more, it would also be a good time to ask more about Sayaka, Kyouko and Hitomi's time in going to school in Chigasaki.

Oi, guys and gals, I do need suggestions for what to talk about at the party... Don't make me effort post alone :p

I completely agree that watching a movie isn't something we should be doing. For games, I can throw in Munchkin and Pandemic (cooperative game) as well for ideas since they've been out for a few years by 2012.

For conversation topics, here are some ideas.
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released on 14th of December 2012. Perhaps Sayaka would be interested in going? I don't think Homura has read LOTR, or maybe she did while at the hospital and it just came up, but perhaps gauge interest around that. Do not know how popular the LOTR movies were in Japan but fiction makes this a little bit easier to work around for the other girls. Crap, I feel old now.
  • Subtly inquire about Hitomi's bae is a given. Friends will embarrass friends, after all.
  • So Archer has a friend who's coming in from London, and you heard that Oriko had a whale of a time in Italy this summer. Any place you girls want to travel?
  • Amy is getting her bi-annual checkup. Who doesn't love talking about cats?
  • Club activities (mostly because I'm curious abut how the archery tournament went - did Shirome win?).
  • Fawn over Tatsuya a bit. Hopefully the kid is now old enough that he doesn't drool food all over the place. Ugh.
  • Both Sayaka and Madoka are into anime, right? Fall season 2012 and Winter season 2012 - perhaps something they'd both watch and Homura got roped into? Probably not JoJo's Bizzare Adventures. Damn it, looking at those lists made me feel old all over again.
To SVS: I just love how Homura made it crystal clear to Madoka that nothing is more important than her. I'm sure her heart skipped a beat there. For constructive critique here, I would've liked to see how the others reacted to Homura's news since the winning vote had that in it. Until a few paragraphs in, it looked like Homura had decided to keep it to herself for now.

I'll skip over the second part of the vote. If we aren't talking about work, it's just fluff and relationship stuff, which I have no investment in as of yet.

Well, considering that Mitakihara suddenly ceased to exist with about half of the population, students included, dispersed throughout the prefecture for the better part of a year, it would have been rather difficult to have their school attending any major events. As it stands, Homura, Madoka, and Kirika were all sent over to Shirome, so it would have been hard for Homura, as a then-member of the Shirome archery team, to compete against the Shirome archery team. Since we haven't met with the other team members, no word on where any of them got sent.

There's nothing stopping us from asking about the current competitive season, but since we (the players) haven't been (re)introduced to the rest of the team I don't know how far that'll get us.

I was saving this for when the girls got together later tonight, since I didn't want to have to write for them reacting to the news twice. That, and I couldn't think of a good way to fit that scene in without it disrupting the flow of the rest of the update. That said, I don't disagree with your assertion.

[X] Something cute

Come on guys, this is Madoka's birthday! Homura must be cute as hell to make Madoka blush!

PD: Dammit, I put plan name by mistake.
