[X] Plan: Hope She Understands
Now, there's just one thing left you have to worry about; aside from feeding, showering, sheltering, and cleaning up Hijiri Kanna so she can be turned over to the Saints after she's had a decent rest; and that's, how do you tell your mother about all of this?
"What is she doing here?"
Maybe you should have started with trying to explain things.
"All right, let's everybody just calm down," Archer says, stepping between Hijiri Kanna and Minako. "I don't like it either, Minako, but Homura made a deal with the little rat. A hot meal, a shower, and a good night's rest were part of that deal."
"Oh?" Minako crosses her arms over her chest, staring at the wretched homunculus as she crouches behind your father, desperate to avoid her glare. Seeing that she'll get no response from Hijiri Kanna, your mother turns to you instead; "And what deal did you make with her, Homura? After she sold us out to that woman, I thought for sure that you would have-"
"I couldn't leave her there." You have to cut your mother off. "I know, mom, I wanted to, so badly, after the way she sold us out to Sidonia. But… You don't understand, mom. She was living out of a cardboard box when I found her. She literally has nowhere else to go. On top of that, she's sick; Sidonia paid her back for selling us out by infecting her with Grief, and most of the people who are in a position treat a Grief infection are here or live within walking distance of here."
You don't tell your mother that Hijiri Kanna's illness is of her own making. If she had kept her mouth shut and not demanded that Sidonia replace her own arm with Kanna Niko's, she wouldn't be in this mess right now. "Nurse Ortensia is coming over to help treat her, and we're turning her over to the Saints tomorrow, where I don't know what they'll do to her." You hang your head, and hope that your mother will be more merciful towards Hijiri Kanna than she should be. "For all I know, this could be her last meal if things turn out poorly."
"I'm sure I won't be a bother to you, ma'am," Hijiri Kanna says. "I probably won't be alive long enough to be."
Lancer glares down at Hijiri Kanna, saying to her "Child, have I not already lectured you about how easily you forsake your life? Grow up. Respect the efforts of the people who are doing what they can for you. Do not be ungrateful for this second chance."
Frustrated by her charge's stubbornness, Lancer grabs Hijiri Kanna by the collar of her hoodie, and drags her before Minako, forcing her to bow. "Be respectful," she says. "The mistress' mother does not need to give you this second chance after you have wronged her family."
"I'm sorry," Hijiri Kanna says. She looks pitiful like this; her left arm clings to her side tightly when she bows, as it should, but her ruined right arm just hangs there limply, dangling straight down and causing a pained grimace to emerge on her face. "I know I've caused your family harm through my actions. I have no excuse."
Hijiri Kanna holds herself like that until, you imagine, the pain in her ruined shoulder becomes too much to bear, and she straightens herself, reaching across her chest with her left arm to hold her right in a place where the pain is at least manageable for her. Minako, seeing this display, looks from Hijiri Kanna to Archer, but remains silent.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity passing, where your mother and father share a silent conversation through only their eyes, Minako speaks. "I'd be well within my rights to tell you to get out and never come near my family again," she says. "Or at least, I would be. But this isn't my house, and since Bryn's with you all I imagine Oriko's given this venture her blessing." Minako sighs to herself, and continues, saying "So, fine, you can come in. You look like crap, and I'd be a pretty terrible excuse for a mother if I let you go off on your own when you're in such a state."
"Thank you," Hijiri Kanna says. "It's more than I deserve."
Minako purses her lips, staring at Hijiri Kanna as she enters the mansion. When she struggles to take her shoes off with just her left hand, Minako asks "What happened to her other arm?"
"That's what she's here to be treated for," Archer replies. "Sidonia messed her arm up pretty good, and there's a clump of Grief that needs to come out." As you crouch over to help Hijiri Kanna with her shoes, Archer continues, saying to Minako in a low voice "Unfortunately, her arm's in such bad shape that it needs to come off. Ortensia is coming to help, and so is the Saints' Assassin servant, who is a doctor. They're going to discuss options going forward, whether they'll replace it with a new one or a prosthetic, but…"
Neither you nor Hijiri Kanna want to hear any more of that conversation. "The kitchen is this way," you say to her; though for the few days she spent in your team's ill-fated base, made in the floorplan of Oriko's mansion, she probably already knows the way. "We've got some slices of pizza in the fridge that I can warm up for you, or if you'd prefer I'm sure we could make you something else."
"Pizza's fine," Hijiri Kanna says. "Easier to eat with one hand."
The flash of pity you feel for Hijiri Kanna as she holds up her only working hand for you is almost enough to wipe away how angry you still are at her for selling your family out to Sidonia. "I'm sorry," you say to her. "It didn't have to be this way."
"I know," Hijiri Kanna replies. "But I made my bed, so now I have to lie down in it. I took her arm, so it's only fair that I have to lose one in return."
"I'm sure you'll have a new one soon enough," you say. Oriko, Lancer, Assassin, and Scáthach all know the proper runes for regrowning or reattaching a lost limb – you know you've seen Oriko reattach lost limbs before with her Uruz rune, as a matter of fact – and you know McRemitz-san, who knows a decent prosthetics specialist. But you don't say any of that. Instead, you say "You're being remarkably more mature about this than I thought you would be. I'm glad."
"Having someone I thought I could trust violate me and kick me out of their corner was a wake-up call to just how terrible I'd really been," Hijiri Kanna says. "I felt what it was like to be betrayed, and I didn't like it. So I can only imagine how terrible it must have been for all of you when you found out I'd sold you out to her."
"Hey sis, heard you got back and-!" Kirika rounds the corner into the kitchen, stopping as she sees Hijiri Kanna with you. "You." She growls the single word, staring at Hijiri Kanna like a mad dog. "Sis, are you sure about this?" she asks. "What if she sells mom out to Sidonia again-?"
"I won't." Hijiri Kanna towers over Kirika in height, but broken by her injuries and beaten down by life, the taller girl appears shorter than your sister, in spirit if not in fact. "Sidonia kicked me out. I don't answer to her anymore."
Hijiri Kanna sits down at the table, and you spend the next several seconds bartering with Kirika in silence; for her cooperation, for her pity if not her forgiveness, and for her help. Finally, she agrees, and the two of you take out the leftover slices of pizza to be warmed up in the oven. "She looks like shit," Kirika says, finally breaking the silence. "What happened to her?" Mentally, not verbally.
"She asked Sidonia to put Kanna Niko's arm onto her," you respond. "So she did. Sidonia used a lump of Grief as her solder, and welded the arm onto her shoulder in place of her own. Now the Grief is infecting her, and Archer says the arm needs to come off." Not that if would matter even if she weren't being infected; the arm would need to come off regardless if for no other reason than it not being properly attached.
"Geez." Kirika recoils at your description; "And I'm guessing Oriko already knows all this?"
"Lancer explained the situation to her on the way over," you reply. "I'm not sure where she's planning to put Hijiri Kanna up, but part of the deal I made with her for telling us what she knew about Sidonia's plans was a hot meal, a shower, and a place to stay the night. But we're transferring her to the Saints' tomorrow, and I don't know what they'll do to her from there."
"Hopefully they kill her." You stare at Kirika. You imagine your silent conversation with your sister is unnerving Hijiri Kanna, but right now you're more concerned with your sister than with your guest. "You said she needs the arm gone? I'd do it myself if you'd let me. Hell, she's lucky I don't just fuck her to death with my claws right here and now for how she sold us out to Sidonia."
"I'm mad at her too," you say. "We all are, and we've all got a right to be. But killing her doesn't solve anything. It doesn't make mom any safer, and it doesn't make us good people if we kill her after she's cooperated with us this much."
"I know that!" Kirika's outburst is so loud, so public, that you'd be amazed if the entire neighbourhood didn't come running. "I know it won't do anything! But she's the reason mom's in danger! I can't just overlook that 'cause you said so!"
Before you have a chance to say anything, Hijiri Kanna speaks up. "You can feel free to hate me as much as you want," she says. "Frankly, at this point I'm just wondering what'll kill me first; the corruption that's been inside me for a week, or someone who's pissed off because I sold them out to Sidonia."
"Nobody is going to kill you," you say to Hijiri Kanna. Kirika's glare is desperately trying to say otherwise, however. "Neither is the Grief. We're going to flush that out of you, and you'll be alive and well so you can make up for your earlier actions. You can't do that if you're dead." You turn your head, glaring at Kirika and daring her to try anything. "Yes, that girl has seriously fucked us all over, and you have every right to be upset. I know I am. But I will not let you kill her. She still has to make amends for everything she's done."
"Dearest? Is everything all right-?" In your silent conversation with Kirika, you hadn't noticed the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Oriko enters the kitchen, stopping as she notices you and Hijiri Kanna. "Oh, Akemi-san, you're back." Oriko turns, bowing for the guest you've dragged along. "Hijiri-san," Oriko addresses her in a much tenser voice. "I'm sorry to hear about your arm. But I wanted to let you know that Caren-san will be arriving shortly."
"That's your cousin, right?" Hijiri Kanna asks. "The one that looks like you."
Oriko nods her head. "That's correct, Hijiri-san. Caren-san is my cousin." Oriko's eyes wander over to the oven, and to the now-warm pizza slices plated for Hijiri Kanna. "Once she and Nightingale have arrived, I'm sure they'll want to get started on your… Operation, as soon as possible. I don't mean to rush you when you're eating, but I strongly recommend that you finish eating and take your shower before they arrive." Oriko stops herself, before quickly adding "Do you need a change of clothes? They might be a little big in the chest, but I'd be happy to let you borrow something of mine to wear while Lancer is cleaning your hoodie and shorts."
At first, Hijiri Kanna's response is a sour one; "I don't think that'll be necessary," she says, trying desperately to keep her eyes trained anywhere but the three people surrounding her. "After I'm done with my shower, I imagine it'll be straight away into losing this useless lump of flesh on my shoulder, and from there I'll probably be sedated until morning."
Despite her guest's insistence on looking anywhere but at her while she's talking, Oriko continues to stare at Hijiri Kanna, wearing a concerned look on her face as she speaks. "But, thank you for the offer," Hijiri Kanna says, softening her tone. "In any other instance, I might have taken you up on it. I just don't think it'll be necessary here."
Oriko nods her head, and lets out a low "Mhm" for Hijiri Kanna. "If you change your mind, don't hesitate to speak up," she says. "I won't mind."
