That girl was
fast. As Mami fired on her opponent, the other girl ran along the length of the wall, deftly avoiding without a single wasted movement every single shot fired on her. Her movement speed and reaction time were superhuman, and her response to Mami's attack was plain inhuman. The other girl opened fire with a barrage of her own, small projectiles fired in rapid sequence from the tips of her fingers which Mami easily dispatched with another barrage of musket-fire. No; it would be more accurate to say that the projectiles were her fingers, Mami noted.
Disturbing, but apparently effective enough.
"Your shot time with those muskets of yours is just as I anticipated," the other girl said, leaping from the building towards Mami, who could only stare as the girl's arm, clothing and all, morphed into a slender blade. "But I happen to know that you're helpless in close-quarters."
Before the other girl could react, yellow ribbons had tied themselves around her blade-arm, impeding her progress. Without missing a beat, the girl's other arm changed into a blade as well, severing the bindings and the ensnared appendage within without so much as slowing down. Instantly, the arm grew back again, and with both arms now shifted to blades, the other girl resumed her advance, and Mami braced herself for impact with ribbons at the ready.
Something
slammed hard into the other girl, sending her on a collision course for the building she had just leapt from and kicking up a cloud of dust and debris in the process.
"What were you saying about my abilities in close quarters?" Mami asked as she stepped out of the cloud, her arm sheathed in a massive golden gauntlet clenched into a fist. "There's more to me than just musketry, you know."
The other girl charged in a second time, but Mami side-stepped and retaliated. The gauntlet around her arm spun rapidly as it roared to life, and with a cry of
"Turbina Dinamo!" its blow kicked up another cloud of dust and debris as Mami struck out with it.
This time, the other girl managed to sidestep Mami's attack, "So your arms are better than I anticipated, but what about your legs?" and brought one of her blade-arms down on Mami's leg; only to be met by a pounding kick from a golden-greaved shin and sent flying once more.
"I guess a blade's not going to cut it anymore," the other girl said as she regained her footing. But her arms didn't return to normal. Instead, they expanded, becoming thick bludgeons to rival Mami's own gauntlets. "Let's give this a try."
Mami and the other girl batted back and forth; when the other girl was close, Mami used her gauntlets to blow her away and create some distance between them. After that, she switched back to her muskets and opened fire until the other girl had closed the gap between them; and the cycle repeated.
With the fighting this close, this was the first time Mami had the chance to get a good look at the other girl; her face was stern and sharp, framed by platinum blonde hair, and dull blue eyes stared back at Mami. The other girl's manner of dress was unusual; a jumpsuit like a paratrooper might wear, but coloured in a faded blue, and decorated with white diamond patterns and cutoff pant-legs that certainly weren't Self-Defense Force standard; and there was something else that Mami noticed about the girl. The ground where she had been standing when her arms changed shape was cratered around the spots where her feet had been, and the same was true for the wall of the nearby building. It too was cratered around the girl's footsteps, as though the material had been stripped from its proper place and absorbed into her body to create additional mass for her attacks.
Mami's blow sent her opponent back once again, and as she once more made her charge forward, Mami asked of her opponent "You're a
puella magi aren't you? Even for one of us, you've got an interesting body," before laying down a volley of musket-fire which shredded the other girl. At least, that was how it appeared to Mami, but the illusion was shattered when the other girl reappeared behind her, forcing her to dodge and narrowly avoiding a strike to her head. "So you can make doubles of yourself as well as manipulating your body. What sort of wish did you make to get that kind of power? To change yourself, perhaps? Or to change something you didn't like about your surroundings?"
"And more, but I have no reason to divulge that information to you."
"Understandable, but I thought perhaps that if we could come to some sort of understanding, we might be able to stop fighting and reach a peaceable conclusion."
"My instructions were clear," the other girl said, taking a step forward; then another. "The five of you need to be eliminated; and I've grown tired of playing around with you."
"Really?" A gleam shone in Mami's eyes as she and her opponent squared off, all overtures of peace now removed from the equation entirely. "That's funny, because so have I." An enormous cannon was brought to bear on her foe in no time, and with a cry of
"Tiro Finale!" Mami unleashed her final shot upon her foe.
The dust and smoke barely had time to clear when a voice called out to Mami, "Look out!" It was a young girl who Mami must have missed when making her rounds just minutes earlier. That girl's brief warning was all Mami was given as a barrage of concrete fists cascaded towards her position. She dodged, narrowly avoiding the long, striking arms, before retaliating on the unharmed form of her opponent, barely concealed behind an uprooted mound of what had once been a piece of road.
"Akemi-san, I'm under attack with a civilian in protective custody! Repeat, I'm under attack with a civilian in protective custody!"
Her response came only moments later,
"Tomoe-san, I'm going to send Archer to assist you, so hang tight."
"Understood. I'll hold out the best I can until then."
"You've got allies incoming."
Was this girl a psychic? Or did she have more eyes than just the ones in her head? "I need to end this quickly."
Mami's opponent took a single step forward as she spoke the words,
"Rendere o Romperlo!"
You see a brilliant blue lighting up the night sky before you see anything else. In the few seconds it takes for you to turn your attention towards Tomoe and her opponent, something has already gone horribly,
horribly wrong. You see Tomoe's opponent, a girl - likely a
puella magi by the amount of magical energy you can sense within her - standing over her body, as her arm morphs into a bladed edge.
"I'd hate to waste your Soul Gem like this," you hear the other girl say to Tomoe's -
Unconscious? Dead? - body. "But keeping you alive's more of a risk than you're worth." You move faster than the other girl, loosing several arrows towards her in rapid succession. Each one soars to their target, but just before they can reach the other girl, they are knocked out of the sky by a volley of arrows coming from the opposite direction. Fortunately, while your attack has failed to reach the other girl, your interruption has stayed her hand, just long enough. You see her crane her head skyward, as if she's looking up at
you, before hearing her call out "Usagi, we're leaving! Tell Archer to withdraw and get out of here!"
So they've got an Archer servant of their own, do they? You scan the surrounding buildings, hoping to catch sight of their mystery servant; that's when you spot her. Off in the distance, standing on the roof of a building maybe a kilometer or two away, you see a woman; blonde, wearing green, and holding a bow in her gauntleted hands;
and she has cat ears and a fluffy tail, too. That's certainly different. She must have seen you, too; your eyes meet for a split second, but the enemy Archer gives you a wide berth as you hop down from your perch and make to collect Tomoe's body before the other girl can do anything more.
She's not attacking you; but why?
To your surprise, the other girl is still standing there when you arrive, though you're unable to make out the civilian Tomoe said she was protecting. "She'll live," the other girl says, looking at you rather than at Tomoe's fallen form. "All I did was fry the connection between her Soul Gem and her body. She'll be back to normal in a couple of hours."
The girl tries to make her escape, but "Hold it. Don't think I'm letting you go anywhere."
"I think you've got more pressing things to concern yourself with," the other girl says. She motions with her head, and that's when you finally catch sight of Tomoe's civilian. "If you don't want her getting in trouble, you'll deal with her before the wrong people realise she's seen something she shouldn't have."
Before you can stop the other girl from retreating, a volley of arrows comes between you and her.
So now the enemy Archer intervenes, now that you've ascertained Tomoe's status. A second volley never comes, leaving you, Tomoe's body, and the civilian girl by yourselves.
You're left with plenty of questions, but one stands out more than all the rest.
Why does this civilian girl have the same exact face as the girl Tomoe was just fighting?
"Archer, the culprit has retreated. Oriko, Kirika, and Kyouko all report that their opponents are retreating, but I haven't heard from Tomoe-san yet. How are things going on your end?"
"Well, there's been something of an... Incident. You see..."
