It was a delight to help work on this one, Alex. You really are a master at gloomy, brooding noir stuff. The atmosphere is thick through the whole chapter, and you're never quite sure what Touji is going to do or where his moral limits will end up being. Delightfully tense and moody.

Thank you so much for all the help I am glad it came out as well as it did. And yeah I am definitely into that sort of gloomy noir kind of story it really speaks to something in me. A big thianks should also be given to @Strypgia for doing the editing and @DocMatoi and @Doctor Squared for their encouragement and support writing this behemoth.

Even if he does survive, his relationship with his sister and Hikari might take a nasty hit after the stunt he just pulled.
He's going to need to come clean about everything if he wants to get anywhere close to where he was.

Really felt like a gang movie.

Really felt like a gang movie.
I mean part of it literally is :V the movie playing in the theatre Touji finds Yukina is the Godfather part one early on at the wedding. I watched the scene a few times and tried to synch up Yukina and Touji's conversation to match up with what was being said on screen. I figured it fit since the story is about Touji the son of a mobster trying to get revenge for his father. It's also a very traditionally masculine movie about family and honor and power, themes that Touji struggles with as he tries to reconcile the image of his father in his mind with the knowledge of what he did.

I'm going to suggest that you should have cropped off the bottom 25% of that image, because aaaaaaaaaaaa AI art arm

"Touji, we really have to go...." Yukina stopped as her eyes wandered down Touji's chest, to a dark red spot below his ribs that was only getting darker.

"It's getting... I think it's snowing... isn't it?" There was a slight smile on his face at that as he looked out across the shifting water of the pond.

"I should go... I can get someone to..." Yukina panicked, no idea what she could say that would not immediately land them both in prison or worse.

"Please just... stay with me." There was something in the boy's eyes that made Yukina smile sadly as she joined him under the rustling leaves of the tree.

Oh great, now Shinji's gotta shell out for a robot torso.

My first comment of the new year...momentous? It's kind of appropriate considering how serious the discussions got here in Chapter 41. Let's see, this what I noticed and really liked.

Half of an unfamiliar ceiling drifted in front of Asuka's face, her mind straining as it tried to grow accustomed the shadow on her right side

It was a really good call to start with this. Reminding us of Asuka's sacrifice and giving it a real lasting physical consequence. It establishes right away how things have been shaken up.

That either means he is serious about abiding by the deal or confident enough it doesn't matter." Shinji flinched, hating to admit his own weakness. "I just... don't know what to do."

I love how many times being more powerful than he is in canon doesn't really make things easier for Shinji. It's ironic and it's also really compelling to read.

"I am so sorry!" Asuka cried and hugged more, feeling her sister finally respond in kind. "I am so, so sorry..."

Now Rebecca was crying too as the siblings joined together. A bond that was never quite there before was now forming in an instant in the dim light of the doorway.
I can't just paste everything in their exchange so I'm just going to say this part summarizes perfectly. They've grown a lot and I can tell you have put so much into Rebecca as a character and what she does to affect things. One of the best additions to the mythos.

At that Rebecca blushed and stared down at her scuffed shoes. "Sorry! Its just... really easy to fall behind when you stop... I haven't had much reason other than Rei, so..." The girl trailed off and grabbed her bag from the stoop, pulling out a worn-looking hair brush. "You don't have to..."

"I want to." Asuka smiled and sat down on the couch, patting the spot next to her, doing her best to be as welcoming as she could be to not scare off the poor girl prematurely.

Okay, that's the cutest thing ever. Any added symbolism there you were going for?

Nothing.

That was what Shinji felt the moment he stepped out of the apartment; a dry, hollow nothing that leaked into all the edges he hadn't realized Asuka's company had occupied. The warm embrace that let him ignore the gnawing absence of his guardian from his life.

You're really good in this chapter, I notice, with the sudden emotional jolts. These keep things feeling very dynamic even when the physical action is comparatively mundane.

"I mean, I can't stop you," Shinji sighed and drank from the cold glass of water in front of him. He looked away from his dad and over to the adjoined kitchen where half a dozen staff slaved over hot woks.

"I think we both know that's not true," Gendo nodded sagely. "If you really wanted I have no doubt you could rip apart me and everyone else at this place without a second thought but... you aren't so... you've got that for you."

How afraid of that possibility was Gendo? I mean, he came here to see Shinji by himself so not that much but did the idea ever cross his mind? Or did he know he was taking a risk by doing that?

"What are you going to do?" Gendo gave a tired shrug, clearly hurt but unable to vocalize it. "She was going for a long time now. This just... pushed her over the edge."

Sobering. I wonder again how difficult it is for Gendo to talk about this.

"Mom? Hmm," Gendo sneered a bit at the word. "Though perhaps I can see how one can take on a role."

"Especially when it is neglected."

It was the Commander's turn to look uncomfortable. "Indeed."

Okay, Shinji clearly wins this confrontation, imo. You don't come back from that, Gendo.

It was a song Asuka half recognized. "You played that for me while I was... sleeping." Her words made him jump, nearly falling from his perch as he scrambled down to meet her.

"Asuka!" he squawked and gave an awkward smile as he got closer, clearly weighing up whether or not to embrace her in a hug before throwing caution to the wind and wrapping his arms around her. "I heard, but I didn't believe that... you're back."

Sweet and also amusing. Moreover, it emphasizes how vulnerable Kaworu is and how vulnerable he lets himself be for other people.

"Kaworu... while we were together in there, Shinji told... or rather, he showed me everything. I got a glimpse right into his soul." Asuka held the boy tight, her voice going cold. "I know, Kaworu."

Again, the rest of the conversation is great but this part sticks out to me the most. Just a lot of power beyond everything Asuka says and does right here.

"Our time is coming, Asuka, I know it is."

"I know it is too, but we have a long way to go and a lot of things to do before we get there," Asuka nodded and pressed her head against his chest. "Speaking of.."

And the polycule gains another leg.

He traced his finger along the edge of the desk again, working their way to the small wooden box on the edge of the table, prodding at the thing with a red stained hand. A gift... not the first, but perhaps the last...

Really solid visual again. It's almost...religious in the imagery you conjure, if that makes sense.

"Life is... too short I think to resort to self-denial of bad habits." He tried to smile back, something almost playful passing between their eyes.

I wonder how ironic that will end up being for him by the end of this.

The Commander blinked again, for a moment thinking the whole encounter a daydream until he saw the box on his desk was gone.

'Dreams within dreams within dreams, but when will I wake up?'

Heh. Good question, Gendo.

The door slid open and he saw Asuka sitting at the table waiting for him. Opposite her, Kaworu sat, his eyes blazing like setting suns.

"Come here, Shinji." Asuka beckoned, her voice a forced calm. "We... have a lot to talk about."

They need to negotiate the polycule. Seriously though, very strong end for the chapter.

As I have said before, I am always very aware that since BNb has a lot more elements than canon a lot more powers and characters and just general stuff that its important to keep a suspension of disbelief and a sense of realness to the world. That realness doesn't have to correspond with physical laws of reality but to feelings and emotions, if something happens it needs to feel earned good or bad. Good things happen when characters put in the work to do it and often require something of themselves in the doing, bad things happen because characters make bad choices or refuse to change.
I can't just paste everything in their exchange so I'm just going to say this part summarizes perfectly. They've grown a lot and I can tell you have put so much into Rebecca as a character and what she does to affect things. One of the best additions to the mythos.
Yeah I... I really don't like to toot my own horn but yeah the relationship between Asuka and Rebecca really works in a way that is quite surprising to me. Part of it is like, my own frusterations and regrets regarding my own siblings, not being there for them when I could have been, not being as good brother as I should have been. But it does just sorta naturally fit Asuka their interactions feel quite genuine to the point that especially some of the other original characters like Stern or Liz does sorta trancend her role.
Okay, that's the cutest thing ever. Any added symbolism there you were going for?
there are a number of reasons why Asuka always sorta chaffed at Rebeccas existence One was that she was a living proof of her fathers infidelity and potential cause of her parents divorce but another was that she was so much more of a girl than Asuka was. Asuka never really wanted to be the super cute girly girl, but compared to Rebecca she could not really compete, especially when she was forced into being the hyper athletic tomboy pilot while Rebecca had the free time (another big thing is that she kinda resents Rebecca for having a more normal childhood than her and hates she cant ever admit that) and aptitude to do more traditionally feminine things like dress up and enjoy feminine hobbies.
How afraid of that possibility was Gendo? I mean, he came here to see Shinji by himself so not that much but did the idea ever cross his mind? Or did he know he was taking a risk by doing that?
Everything is always a calculated risk with Gendo one way or another. There was always the chance (Especially if Shinji thought that he was responsible for Maris death) that he would just rip him in half like a cheap toy. Shinji does have a temper, lots of daddy issues and a self righteous streak after all but... on the other side he has been super powered for a long time and not done anything yet. Despite thinking of himself as a monster Shinji really hasnt used his powers for evil or even selfish interests so Gendo probably assumed previous currents still held. Always a risk tho.
Sweet and also amusing. Moreover, it emphasizes how vulnerable Kaworu is and how vulnerable he lets himself be for other people.
Speaking of... now this is just me talking but one of my regrets with bnb is that I was always sort of afraid in regards to Kaworu, I wanted him to play the part of an arrogant tsundere who shows his soft side to those he loves but... I think I kinda failed on the tsun part since he never really does the arrogant but likeable jackass thing enough to really push exemplify the archatype. I was always a bit self consious I was gonna lose people with the character.

That realness doesn't have to correspond with physical laws of reality but to feelings and emotions, if something happens it needs to feel earned good or bad.

Oh, that's a really good way to look at it. Focused on what feels thematically true and not just going by strict technical formula. I think it really makes everything feel grounded and earned so far.

Part of it is like, my own frusterations and regrets regarding my own siblings, not being there for them when I could have been, not being as good brother as I should have been.

That stuff can be really tough to dwell on.

One was that she was a living proof of her fathers infidelity and potential cause of her parents divorce but another was that she was so much more of a girl than Asuka was. Asuka never really wanted to be the super cute girly girl, but compared to Rebecca she could not really compete, especially when she was forced into being the hyper athletic tomboy pilot while Rebecca had the free time (another big thing is that she kinda resents Rebecca for having a more normal childhood than her and hates she cant ever admit that

Oh, there's so many layers to how she feels! Do you think Asuka will soon reach a point where she's comfortable admitting those reasons to Rebecca? Or will that take more time?

Shinji does have a temper, lots of daddy issues and a self righteous streak after all but... on the other side he has been super powered for a long time and not done anything yet.

Yet is the most meaningful word there. But yeah, I commend his self-control.

I think I kinda failed on the tsun part since he never really does the arrogant but likeable jackass thing enough to really push exemplify the archatype.

I still think you have done well with him. I see him as someone trying to be a God but fails when he's more human than that and that's a very compelling character in its own right.

You are (not) alone in this apprehension. As some have brought up in the thread before, Kaworu is a thoroughly deep character with little reason to behave predictably in the brief cameos the show and assorted media gave. This only adds to his complexity and helps with fic authors looking to cover a lot of ground or otherwise spice things up.

What really amazes me about K specifically, however, is how much the show creators had to retroactively up his charm and appeal with the Raising Project, almost like from side quest NPC to shining armor. It really made me chuckle when he is evoking frailty, gets embraced by a worried Shinji and says to him: "See? No weapons…" or something to that effect.

But yeah, I commend his self-control.
He wakes up from LCL limbo to be told that Mari succumbed to her ailments, something that in most of the popular media built on the hero's journey would compel a character to go rogue. Instead of revenge, he embodies resolve and leadership.

Speaking of..
I figured it fit since the story is about Touji the son of a mobster trying to get revenge for his father.
I really enjoyed the newest chapter, and hope Yukina is every bit the foil that stops Touji's bloodlust cold. Although I imagine her somewhat associating and identifying with the same gangster type dudes through T's dad's own dealings back then.

Bloody fantastic chapter. I've really enjoyed seeing the snippets and sections come through on the Discord and seeing it there in full now is brilliant. You've done a great job.

I thought you played Touji really well here, I really didn't know up until the last minute which decision he was going to make. A part of me genuinely did think he was going to go through with it, he'd instantly regret it afterwards but I did think he might just do it even if he truly didn't want to become that man. Ultimately, it's a good thing he didn't and that confrontation with the movie playing in the background was delightfully tense, well written and a great read.

All the little things leading up to it were great too, big fan of the conversation with the older lady. Touji learning that little bit about Yukina's life and seeing her more and more as a human then a target, and the obvious guilt with what he is going to do. It was all really well done.

Fantastic job Alex.

Well Asuka is definitely on the precipice of her new life, Shinji rescuing her from Valkyrie has definitely given her a new chance at things and shes going to take it, but as anyone who has broken a New years resolution before February can tell you, its a lot easier to say your going to do a thing than actually doing it.

I mean to be fair pretty much all the spin off material changes or sands off the edges of the characters as they were from Canon. Shinji goes from a depressed anxious wreck with pent up rage to an awkward teenage boy, Asuka goes from quite mean and callous to just tsundere Rei goes from almost entirely alien to just shy etc... so turning Kaworu from a sort of strange benevolent enigma to a charming yet goofy bishonen only makes sense.

The Touji stuff really is helped by its unbroken (until the very end) point of view of Touji which really lets you get into his headspace and understand his feelings but also its length which allows it to take its time and explore the feelings and ideas present without having to jump away to the next important plot point. I think it came out really well.

LOL amazing. Fittingly space Jesus.
Kaworu "behold my magnificence!"
Shinji "Your final form is a digimon?"
Asuka "I was gonna say Sailor moon."
Shinji turns to Asuka "I mean you would."
Kaworu "Aww come on do you know how long it took to get the wings right? You can at least pretend to be in awe."
Shinji "Its lovely. And I will give you this, its a lot more regal and impressive than the duck costume."
