Damnit @Alex you nearly make my heart tore itself apart from being so conflicted between wanting to squee or to cry!

More seriously, this is a very nice chapter. The mood whiplash is rather sudden though to be honest, but other than that its perfect.

EDIT: This just hits me. Is your fic ShinjixRei or ShinjixAsuka? or Even ShinjixRebecca? I just want to know, no intention at being offensive or starting a shipping war :)
Thanks! :) I am glad you liked. The Whiplash was intentional or at least I tried for some amount. Whether it was too much is up for the reader to decide I suppose.

Heh it is Eva. If it was easy it would be OOC.
and here we see Shinji's level 1 Ranbu-style super "Beat up: Nerd". As a staggered high priority five hit combo, it allows a Shinji to deal BIG damage to his opponent without them being able to tech out. It does have some delay frames midway through, allowing an opponent to get in a quick shot. The frames come with Super Armor, so this is only a problem against extremely hard-hitting opponents.

However, this super does have a glaring weakness; if Aida mains elect to bring along a Sakura as a tag assist. If used, a Sakura assist can interrupt the super at any point, and worse, counts as a snapback that can actually eject a Shinji from the field for the duration of the match, leading to an instant loss if that is all a player has left.

Some pretty dark moments spread throughout it, especially that Kensuke and Shinji scene. It really made a lot of sense though considering who Shinji is in this fic. This is a Shinji who knows more than anything what is at stake, he knows the damage that can be done and he has a bit of a sense of duty here. He wants to actively protect and seeing Kensuke being that reckless would trigger severe anger, hell Kensuke's actions in the series when he has a go at Shinji for leaving makes me angry.

On the Shinji front:
Yeah. I struggled a lot with this bit because I did want to do it but I was unsure how to strike a good balance. I wanted it to come off as understandable not acceptable. And while I was afraid I would turn people off I also knew if I went easy and just had Shinji smack him a bit while acting all tough or whatever then the message might be lost and it would appear as though I was setting up Shinji beating up his friend as some cool noble thing. The way I see it Shinji has good intentions but can get really blindsided by his own hangups and issues. Normal teenagers and not great at emotional stability at the best of times and Shinji is someone with the weight of the world on his shoulders and knows it. He is also as Squared said, predisposed due to his training to see violence as the solution to problems. Squared's deconstruction comment also extends to a trope I sometimes see the "combat training childhood" or if not as a childhood but an extended period. Where a background of intense combat training is used as justification for a characters badassery but does not seem to actually affect their life or personality in any way. Shinji has been changed by his time and Mari knows this. She hates it but sees it as better then him dying. I should make clear again though that while I think its understandable why Shinji did it, it was still a idiotic dangerous failing on his part.

On a lighter note...
Komaya is always...

...Interesting. it's not simple yuri bait, since it also runs right across power lines: Maya wants Kodama, and is pretty much to her direct supervisor. And knows it. So Maya's perspective is a constant 'WHY AM I DOING THIS IT IS SO UNETHICAL"
This subplot has been fun as heck to write. I know to some its quite a bit of a slow burn and maybe to others it feels like a waste of time but I really enjoy it. Plus it gives me an opportunity to juxtapose things like in this chapter and to give an alternate perspective on events. Since Shinji isn't a fish out of water rookie in this world its always good to have a new one so I can explain things to her if need be.

This is, thematically, quite possibly the most creative Eva fic I've seen in a long, long time.

Here's to you, kid. <raises a glass in toast>

Was playing Girls Frontline and stumbled across Rebecca
She's adorable. I am really glad people like Rebecca. At least based on what we have so far. She really was just a bit of a last minute creation based on a observation I had when looking at Eva fan art. That Asuka's hair color varies between artists from dark red to light blonde. So I joked the two could be sisters and it evolved from there. I think she works well as a compliment and contrast to Asuka and her existence just brings Asukas home life from a background detail to a forefront thing. Not sure about the glasses tho. That much moe might be dangerous:p

While it might not look cool or noble, Shinjis gotta figure out his 8 pages of special moves somehow. might as well be by clowning on someone conceptually incapable of punishing whiffs.

Yeah, we probably want to avoid having a Moe-verload.

Oh I forgot to mention but for the resemblance to phone game character things. I will admit with some embarrassment that one of the reasons I wanted (and am now happy to have) Karna from Fate Grand Order is that he looks more then a little Kaworuish.

Well... Kaworu if he was wearing an outfit that let him go to a gay pride parade in the morning and go Larping in the afternoon. :p

After consulting with fighting game guru and friend @Zeratoth I have matched some BNB characters with characters from the only fighter I am half way decent at Blaz blue.

I am not super familiar with this character since he comes from a side game I have not played. But from what I can tell he is a good kid strapped with crazy anime powers thrown into a situation over his head.

For the eccentric scientist with a thing for robots and a cat theme.

The brash firey fighter not afraid to charge in. But loyal and dutiful as well.

Relius is a lot less sympathetic then Gendo but they share a love of science a Robot with their wifes soul inside and lets say a... strained relationship with their sons :p

Kaworu is a lot harder to place. I have a very firm vision of BNB Kaworu in my mind but in some ways he is difficult to define. Especially without spoilers. Still I don't think I am risking too much by saying he has a sly sarcastic edge to him and a deep rivalry/connection with Shinji.

Rei on the other hand is very easy to place since Nu 13 is very much a Rei clone.

This one is pretty perfect. Besides the fact that Rebecca is a ray of hope in a cast full of grumpy weirdos Platnium looks pretty much exactly what I would imagine Rebecca looking like if she dressed up like a magical girl.

Thank you for letting me indulge in this it was a fun exercise.

Honestly, any vaguely canonical version of Rei is much closer to Lambda than Nu.

That's one hell of an assholish combination for Kaworu, though. >_>

Yeah as I said he was the hardest to translate but there are shades of them in BNB Kaworu who is a bit of a asshole. I wanted to avoid copying A&T or my work with NME so I am basing BNB Kaworu more on the manga version. So while he isn't cruel like Hazama he does have a certain arrogance sarcasm and pettiness to him. At least on the surface.

Shinji: "I'm dreaming, and I'm gonna wake up! Somebody pinch me-dammit Kaworu not you!"

"Why don't I get a nice Kaworu?!"

"You're Shonen Protagonist Shinji. Tradition dictates that you get a Shonen Rival Kaworu."

As long as you keep him away from any kittens...

Why does everyone fixate on the cat thing so much? It's not really that funny.
"Durr hurr he killed a cat" yeah we know. It was meant to showcase how alien his mindset is, let's move on.

I think it's because it's quite a jarring and shocking introduction for him, especially considering all people had to go on before then was the series in which it didn't seem like Kaworu would hurt a fly, never mind snap the neck of a kitten.

It just felt very strange, especially in a manga that had already undergone a lot of critique from the Eva fanbase for having some very weird/bizarre changes to it.

I understand the reaction and I get why its become a bit of a meme. But i do admit that I find it slightly frusterating that a character who in my mind at least is rather deep and interesting is boiled down to that one moment. Especially when its used as some sort of evidence he is a generic psychopath monster.

That's fandom for you.

The whole arrogant jerk thing and kitten thing sort pushed the whole "Kaworu is weird and alien, and isn't human" bit. Show Kaworu had it too, but at that point, Shinji had witnessed Rei II die, had his father force him to kill Touji (or at least to his knowledge), had pretty much everyone he knew from school leave since Tokyo-3 was nigh-destroyed, and had Asuka in the hospital in a coma. At that point, any friendly face was a godsend, and Shinji wasn't in any real condition to realize that Kaworu acts like Kevin Spacey's character from the movie K-PAX

BnB!Kaworu is seen as a weapon by Kiel and SEELE, as a little boy by Liz (who gets taken from him), and Magical Childhood Friend by Asuka and Shinji who met him that one time. There's also the small fact that his past-self was built to be a terraforming tool by some distant, ineffable alien race which means that both who he is currently (a tool for SEELE's plans for humanity) and what he's actually supposed to be are both just tools for others to make use of. So given that he's a teenager in a deconstruction of shonen anime he's going to act like he's a smug superior asshole to everybody when deep down inside he's this:

Holy moly, that means BnB Kaworu is actually a clone of Asuka! This changes everything!
