On Democracy
The Umojan Protectorate is definitely the most democratic polity in the Koprulu Sector (and, unbeknownst to you, probably the most democratic human polity in existence) so it is basically the in-game benchmark for democrats and reformists. Whether it's democratic by modern standards ("kind of") is sort of irrelevant, because the historical era we as OOC people are a part of has basically been obliterated or distorted in-universe, first by the fascist United Powers League and then by the oligarchical Confederacy.

However, while there's not much history to point to, the Koprulu Sector has been settled for several centuries at this point and speculative political theory is just as popular in the 26th century as it is in the 21st. It would be implausible if someone hadn't independently developed theoretical systems like liberal democracy or social democracy. Moreover, the Confederacy tended to drape itself extensively in democratic trappings, and the unpopularity of the Confederacy won't stop democrats from wanting a democratic system but without the Old Families.

While there isn't currently an engaged mass democratic culture waiting in the wings for Mengsk to stumble, democratic ideals can be transmitted to or learned by the people, and some basic awareness of them does currently exist. It's all just a matter of how hard you're willing to work for it, and whether you think it's worth the effort, which is a subjective argument that I leave to the questers.

Yeah. The only reason I'm not 100% with Laurent about "remove Dominion's autocratic trappings, institute Commonwealth with a republic" is because I'm genuinely worried that laying the groundwork for that would either take too long, cause too much collateral damage, or both. And that we'd end up getting Chuck killed before he could get the ball rolling or eaten along with the rest of the Dominion by external enemies afterwards.

If it weren't for the part where we're on the clock and threatened from the outside, I would be 100% in favor of the part where I'd think a republic would work.

I'm actually more interested in the building up the Dominion stuff then our, seemingly, half-assed ideas to overthrow and install some government that has no actual stability. So yeah, plans that focus on economic activity and bettering Terran Space but sort of forget the subvert part are totally fine with me.
The problem is that the Dominion is led by a paranoid lunatic with a megalomania complex thicker than the tectonic plate that groans under the weight of his new mega-palace.

Right now we can uncomplicatedly "just better Terran space" and be having real, good impact on people's lives. But the longer the Dominion is ruled by Arcturus, the more he's going to become his own- and everyone's- worst enemy.

For fuck's sake, the man's a Terran in Starcraft and he thinks SCVs are bad. That, right there, is a danger sign. Have you ever played either Starcraft game? Seriously, he's anti-SCV. He has to go, sooner or later.

Personally I think it might be a good idea to start putting a little more effort into our mandatory tasks as they appear to be slowly piling up.
Eh, I think we're good. Right now we've got one big ongoing megaproject that's required- Augustgrad- and two "little" projects, each in a separate category from the other, and both of relatively manageable size.

If we start seeing multiple mandatory projects pop up in the same category, then I'll start worrying.

I really do think some people forget that while we might be against Mengsk we are totally and completely pro-Dominion. We don't want anarchy or chaos. Hell I don't even think we would want democracy - since there really isn't a culture of that in Terran space...
Laurent correctly points out that Umoja is uncomplicatedly a democracy.

The problem isn't that we couldn't create a republic to replace the Dominion in theory; the problem is doing so without gutting the Terran Koprulu colonies with a second round of civil war at the worst possible time and getting eaten by external enemies.

After all, even if we try to instate a democracy and the electoral process goes badly, what would be the failure state? The worst probable scenario is "a megalomaniacal charismatic strongman seizes absolute power."

Except that's already happened! We work for exactly such a man, and he's already in charge! From a political science standpoint there's nowhere to go but up!

Actually it is 3 "little" projects. You forgot the veterancy program.

Actually, I forgot Fort Sumner, but yes.

With that said, the point is, we only have three of these little projects, there aren't two in the same category, and we're pretty confident of being able to polish off at least two of the three existing ones by 2508Q3 (that is, next turn, not the turn we're now voting on). It only looks like they're piling up dangerously fast because we got two at the beginning of the year and we're not knocking them off in the very same turn.

So slight change of topic, does anyone else want to build the extravagant version of the Trevelyan Commercial Tower?

I'm tempted too. Both the Veterans' Hospital (which is Mandatory) and the Employment of Prisoners (which is not, but is 2 free dice) are higher priority for me... but once those are done I think it might be worthwhile to turn to do it.

But we've SEEN how powerful a +10 per dice is to something like, say, Nephor II's bonus.

I know I do! It's just a question of finding a way to keep the Paranoia numbers down. That, and making sure we get the veterans' benefits done right, because while that's an order from Mengsk, it's the kind of thing that Chuck would care about, dammit! [pounds fist on table on Chuck's behalf because Chuck is a fictional character and cannot do so]

The good news is that giant memorial buildings are the kind of thing you can take your time about.

It's appealing in the sense that it helps slow the obvious plan of Korhol becoming the economic centre of gravity of the Dominion, if we God-forbid fumble Korhol then it cant be half the GDP and all the power brokers.

Since it is fun to make fun of dictators, what if the only reason the greening of Korhal adds paranoia is because by cleaning up all those tar pits from the brood war maps, Mengsk thinks we are trying to erase more of Korhal's culture and history from before the nukes?

In terms of democratic trappings and the construction of the apparatus for gauging popular will vis a vis the time before the second apocalypses hits Koprulu Sector, it honestly shouldn't be that hard to get the Dominion in the habit of massaging referendum wins for policies it wants to legitimize and see implemented more painlessly, and to start feeding all the monitoring of the security state into poll numbers and the same kinds of statistics as seen with megacorp marketing geeks. With how much Napoleonic energy Mengsk has and how much the principles of governance in the Dominion would likewise be (apart from just a meme Stalinist "whatever the bossman felt like today and doesn't get me purged", anyway) very like Bonapartist in that the Dominion is the Sons of Korhal institutionalized and the protectors necessary to safeguard the revolution. That by an almost religious laying of hands of transposing the Sons and the Dominion the imperial jackboot wearers are the instrument by which the national spirit of Koprulu is made known and manifests itself. So plebiscites as carefully choreographed as everything else Mengsk does to make himself seem like a demigod seem rather straightforward.

I'm a little unclear on what you mean by "fumble Korhal?"

Since it is fun to make fun of dictators, what if the only reason the greening of Korhal adds paranoia is because by cleaning up all those tar pits from the brood war maps, Mengsk thinks we are trying to erase more of Korhal's culture and history from before the nukes?
It's mostly because it involves adding something to Mengsk's plan for how things should work that Mengsk, personally, didn't think of. That's all it really takes to make him more paranoid.

That makes sense.

I like fossil collections like the ones found in tar pits, so I combined that with a jan at Mengsk and how the map makers never explained their presence or later absence.

Well, original Starcraft maps need water obstacles for balance, so the mapmaker's decision was "what do we do for water obstacles on this map?" Most other terrain types can just throw water in, even if it's icy water (on the arctic map type used for Braxis) or whatever. Ash-world maps (used for Char) can just use seas of lava. Space platform maps just use the void of space itself.

But what do you do on a desert map? Large bodies of standing water aren't believable on a desert map.

So someone had the genius idea to use giant tar pits.

Given the plethora of current Paranoia reducing options, I think we can swing the numbers.

I like the aesthetic in the end. I like dinosaurs, fossils, and the history of predator traps like La Brea.
I am not going to derail, but I am always easily entertained when it comes to dinosaurs.

Okay, two things.

A) I 1000% agree with you on the quote above. Any Terran who thinks SCVs are bad are bad people and should be shot. SCVs are like the greatest gift to Terran space.

B) or 2) I don't really disagree with your comments. I just don't entirely think that others are coming at the same direction as your comments, so I disagree with theirs. But yeah, I agree with how you are approaching things.
