Poking At Trauma
Waiting for the females to finish dealing with their emotions, you poke about the tower. Thing and frail staffs that are twice your body length adorn several shelves, though they lack any readily detectable enchantment. The many books that are piled on tables and filling bookshelves are entirely illegible, much to your frustration. You are unsure of whether they are merely written in Quelana's original language or if all script in this land will be just as incomprehensible.

It doesn't take long for you to discover what Louise destroyed. In the uppermost room of the tower, what appears to be a personal room for meditation, several plinths have been knocked over. Judging by those that remain upright, you see that the fragments on the floor were once stone braziers. You spend a while piecing the shattered objects back together, finding that they each seem to tell a story in their carvings. One depicts serpentine figures emerging from the base and curling around the lip, another is of a great battle against dragon-like creatures, and the last one shows a knight with swords of flame being branded with a fiery circle by a bearded giant.

"Gwyn and the humans that aided us in the fight against the dragons." Quelana's voice echoes softly across the room. You turn to see her carrying your sleeping apprentice into the room. "I always adored children you know... while my siblings are all my mother's children, none of us ever went through such a phase, simply formed through the power of mother's soul and the ashen ground." Laying the girl on the cushion in the center of the room, she sits beside you. "Queleah and I were delighted when mother opened Izalith to the humans, despite Quelaag's insistence of their untrustworthy nature. My dear sister spent much of her time surrounded by swarms of the larval humans."

"Personally, I could never stand the creatures." You admit honestly, much to the woman's surprise. "They are loud, unfocused, dirty, always creating problems, and entirely too emotional."

Frowning, She asks, "If you are truly as repulsed by them as you claim, how do you rationalize the girl's presence?"

Pausing for a moment, eyeing the girl before you reply, "Louise is... special. While most of what I said is true about her as well, I cannot help but see myself in that girl. She has so much potential and the need to learn, but those people in her homeland were suffocating her. Until we met, those fools had convinced the child that she was doomed to a life as a talentless mage, unable to cast the most basic of spells... How could I let that continue?"

The woman humms and you sit in silence for a while. You can't out-wait an immortal however. "You never did explain how to use these 'souls'."

"Ah, you are correct... though I find your odd inflection of the word mildly insulting. Do you think yourself superior in knowledge even after admitting your own ignorance of the subject?" Quelana asks, more amused than angered.

Shaking your head, you respond. "Perhaps not in this regard, but the idea that every creature has a multitude of souls is rather farcical in my mind. The soul is the center of a beings very self, not some wisp of vapor to be mixed and matched at one's convenience."

"Maybe where you come from, that is true, but here? In this world, the first creatures were immortal dragons made of stone, possessed of no soul and never truly alive. Being among the original living entities, mother's teachings were quite clear in regards to the history of this world. A great ball of fire known as the First Flame appeared at some point In the grey world of before... Whether spawned from the Flame or something else, the serpents came and somehow split the Flame into four primary fragments... The Lord Souls, one of which created life by it's very presence. Though soulless and weak, these creatures had the potential to imbibe the formless essence of power that is a soul."

"Very well, I shall concede the point to you until such time that I can attempt to Soul Trap a creature and discover if they also have the type of soul that I am more familiar with." You acquiesce.

With a smug smile, the witch bows dramatically, though it is ruined by the fact that she is siting with her legs crossed. "Until then. It seems we digress once more, are we to endlessly dance around one another's words until the world goes dark?"

Scoffing, you reply, "You may have the time, but my apprentice and I have not yet discovered immortality... at least, not a form that comes without unsavory costs."

Sobering immediately, she gazes sadly at Louise. "Quite right... Forgive an old woman her games." She says, oblivious to the ridiculousness of such words with her appearance. "Most humans are unaware that there exist two methods of soul reinforcement. The first is in the manner of the Primeval Lords and their chosen subjects, directly assimilating the souls to strengthen your attributes in an uncontrolled manner. This is more convenient for several reasons, freedom from requiring a sacrificial Flame is chief among them. Second is the Undead method of using a sacrificial Flame, known also as a bonfire, or other conduit of the First Flame in order to direct the souls toward a specific intended attribute at the cost of requiring more souls with each offering to the Flame... Be warned however, that directly consuming a soul that is strong enough to retain it's form after death brings with it the nature of the consumed whereas fragmenting a powerful soul in order to use at a bonfire will cleanse it's nature, but subject it to fire's greed."

"So directly absorbing a powerful soul will allow a person's identity to be subsumed? Why would anyone choose that option?" Louise asks? Startling both of you. Just how long has she been awake?

Quelana's hands bump into yours as you both attempt to pat the girl on the head. Awkwardly, neither of you back down, she pushes your hand into the girl's hair as if she hadn't noticed and you refuse to pull away and allow the witch to win. "Of course not, little one." She says soothingly, causing Louise to scrunch up her face in annoyance... or confusion at the conflict taking place in her hair. Probably both. "By gaining their nature, I simply mean that if somebody was extremely agile, you might see a dramatic increase in your dexterity and minuscule improvement towards your other attributes."

Fed up with your antics, the girl swats at you both until you stop mussing her hair. As you are waiting for Quelana to ask her next question, Louise suddenly jumps to her feet in excitement and leans into the witch's ear to whisper something. You observe as the immortal looks confused and Louise turns dark red before whispering even quieter. For no apparent reason, Quelana pulls the blushing girl into her lap and exclaims, "But why? You're so adorable!"

"I am not adorable!" The pinkette shouts, struggling to free herself. "I'm tired of looking like a child!"

Palming your face, you interrupt. "While fascinating, I believe we have more important matters to discuss than Louise's impatience with puberty."

"Puberty?" They both repeat, causing you to sigh in annoyance. An immortal dirt witch you can understand, considering her comment of human larvae, she probably simply hasn't bothered to learn a word that never applied to her, but how can Louise not know? Come to think of it, she has not once complained of suffering from womanly issues in the time you've known her. Though useful for adventuring, you doubt it is a sign of good health.

"Nevermind." Not answering the question, you make a mental note to have the girl see a healer when you move on to the next realm, as you are not going to talk with her about such things. "You mentioned the use of souls in order to cast spells, can you explain?"

Shaking her head, the woman replies, "No... As a fire sorceress and pyromancer, I would not be a proper teacher for such a skill... I... I have not experimented in quite some time. I dare not."

"Why not? Do you really claim to have satisfied your curiosity? What are you so afraid of?" You push on, noticing her wince at your words.

Looking down as she pets your apprentice, who has reluctantly accepted the witch's attention, she says, "Please, you must understand... Mother was the greatest of us all. She was wise, caring, creative... but her caring nature was her undoing. The fire had just begun to fade, the lands began to shift and the sky was slowly darkening over the years as the three remaining Lords weakened. Mother sought guidance from the one known as Frampt, she begged for help in understanding how the First Flame came to be and the serpent told her of the ancient rites that divided the primordial sun and buried it beneath the ground. We believed him, for the serpents, they cannot lie... We learned too late, however, that they may withhold details."

You watch the woman tear up as she takes a shuddering breath and continues. "Something... something went awry. We had gathered, seven sisters and a brother around our mother... our dear, sweet mother... a key piece of the ritual was missing, the Lord Soul was an incomplete flame and attempting to divide it's nature was not... the First Flame was born of the four natures from a whole... four concepts brought into the world by fracturing the newborn sun. Though Gwyn made a new sun and Gwyndolin after him, we could not repeat the ritual on a false star nor could we remake the original without the other three Lord Souls... but we did not know until it was too late... M-mother, she was... my family... I... I need to be alone." The woman becomes increasingly distraught as her tale continues, until you are sure that she will soon be rocking back and forth as though blessed by Sheogorath.

Dumping Louise on the floor, Quelana flees into the shadows of the tower and you are in no hurry to follow as your apprentice looks toward you with worry.

'not without'?

Dark Souls lore is nearly incomprehensible for those not initiated.

At least concurrent headpats are universal.
Thanks you the correction.

Dark souls lore is a puzzle that is missing pieces and many of the existing pieces attempt to occupy the same place. Every player has their own accepted canon and it changes frequently for many. This is simply using my interpretation of the lore and attempting to merge it with the greater TES multiverse.

[x] Give the woman some time.
[x] Give Louise a comforting hug them teach her some undamentals while we wait.

It is just me or does anyone else have this growing felling that being completely dissmissive of how this worked in halkeginia and never bothering with it was a mistake that we should retify at some point ?

[X] Give the woman some time.
-[X] Hmm, persistent physical enhancement does have its uses...

-[X] She mentioned she dared not experiment. In spite of still being curious.

-[X] Aside from that.

-[X] "Your pride will be a great asset to you, push you past you to go above and beyond what normal people are capable of. But you must be careful with it or it will get you killed."
-[X] Now speaking of pride getting people killed, lets go find something to eat.

Heh, human larva swarms.

Also, dem TES lore implications. If the sun is a big hole in the sky leading to a god, and the serpents in darksouls took it from their sky and shattered it, then that's pretty crazy. Are the lord souls miniature portals to that god's power, then? Or more like shards?

Seems like using bonfires to level up will be less efficient if we plan on harvesting souls en mass. Which would be totally cool and probably doable. Go all monster hunter and chase down the biggest and baddiest bosses, then eat their souls for the dank buffs.

[x] give the woman some time
-[x] search the tower for anything enchanted or magically interesting. Soul-based magic seems somewhat different than what we're familiar with, making this a perfect opportunity to learn something new.

I'll need clarification if this is the winning vote. The first part appears to simply be thoughts, I'm assuming the cheese wheel bit is you wanting to investigate what exactly happened when the witch of izalith failed, and then you want to say you won't reprimand the girl right before doing so anyway?

Other than that, all I really gathered is that you wish to give Quelana space while you go off in search of food

Eh, do not trust what Quelana says she's not entirely all knowing, and the serpents are known deceivers.

Heck the dark soul isn't even bound to the power of the first flame like the other three, and instead seems to be the Lorkhan to The first flames Auriel.

This is what I get for writing plans at 5am.

Yep, simple thought process.

Also, not the witch of Izalith specifically. This magic system in general seems like it would have drawbacks, and finding out more about them is a good idea. (see if we can cheat our way out of them).

I guess that is a reprimand isnt it? I meant we should say she is not going to get in trouble, but we expect her to know what she did wrong and to avoid it happening in the future.

And ya, pretty much go look for food and then see if Quelana is feeling better after that.

Into the Muck II: Mucking About
"If it is solitude she requests, we shall give it. Come along apprentice, we are in need of both food and drink, neither of which we shall find in this tower." You say to the worried girl.

Looking between you and the door Quelana fled through, she hesitates before nodding. The two of you quickly make your way out of the tower and down the path to the swamp, narrowly avoiding a leech that attempts to drop on you from above. Unsure of the edibility of the swamp fauna, you decide to take the obvious path toward civilization.

Through the waterways.

"That was a rather foolish thing you did back there Louise."You say, not bothering to look back at her as you begin heading toward the stone structures.

"W-what? I didn't do anything wrong, you're the one that made her run away!" She argues, indignant at the accusation.

Stopping, you turn to give the young woman a questioning look, a single eyebrow raised for maximum effect. "You think I am worried about someone we have only just met?" You ask with obvious disbelief. "Idiot child, I was talking about how you broke down and embraced an unknown entity at the mere thought of being replaced."

Reeling as if slapped, the girl glares at you. "You're mad because I want to be your student?!"

"No, I am worried that you are so emotionally vulnerable and yet entirely unwilling to talk about your problems with me unless I force you to." You say, resuming your flight toward your destination.

The two of you travel in silence as the girl seems to think on your words, which suits you just fine, since you have your own ruminating to do. The witch's fears cannot be unfounded and until you get the woman to fully explain the circumstances of her family's demise, you shall be avoiding any attempts at the local magics and maintaining a wary eye on any serpents. Still, the soul reinforcement is far too useful an opportunity to squander, sounding somewhat similar to one of Vivec's ramblings... Though you aren't sure how much faith you're willing to put into the poetry of a fallen 'divine' ruler. Nevertheless, perhaps you can discover a more efficient way to harvest these 'souls' than killing each creature individually... Maybe if you start- "I'm sorry."

Broken from your thoughts, you turn to look toward the source of the whispered apology. Louise refuses to meet your gaze as she continues. "I don't want to be more of a burden than I already am."

With a put upon sigh, you poke her with your staff. "Louise... Though I am not an affectionate person, I do what I can... but I cannot help you if you are too prideful to seek help. Pride has it's uses, but unfortunately, most of them are ways to manipulate the prideful. I would hate to see our time together was wasted because of some mistaken sense of honor or desire to be useful." You say honestly, as few things are worse than an apprentice wasting your efforts by dying pointlessly when they could have been a valuable minion for years to come. "I do what I can to protect you while attempting to ensure that you are capable on your own, but against an immortal sorceress who has been around far longer than I? Consider yourself lucky that she does not seem to be an enemy, but do not make the same mistake with those we may meet in the future."

Silence descends upon you once more as you cautiously approach the drainage tunnel, Louise struggling with her emotions behind you. Upon noticing that the massive reptile has left it's den, you proceed into the tunnel, avoiding another bonfire and continuing past a set of broken metal bars to land upon the moist stone floor of a circular room. The ceiling is naught but shadows, the center of the room is a lower tier with a chest and the far side of the room is barred off. From above you can hear a large creature roaring and the crackle of lightning magic, no doubt the creature crawled out of it's lair to hunt and happened upon an unfortunate mage.

if this guy is dead he can't point us in the direction of food and it isn't like we can eat the body

--[X] If it looks like the creature is something that Louise and Cynric can finish off alone, and the mage doesn't look like a major threat, assist the mage
---[X] After all, having another mage that can be asked about the soul reinforcement would be useful - a second opinion on things here, a second viewpoint

Why not? If the mage wins we can eat the lizard, if the lizard wins we can eat the mage. Right?
a lot of people talked about how in darksouls eating people warps you, so we realy shouldn't eat either before figuring out it is safe. the mage can tell us if the lizard was once a man or can't be eaten due to some other reason, the reverse isn't true.

I read some of that, but is that an issue with the DS souls magic system? I mean, would it affect those with a different type of soul structure?

Eating beings in dark souls integrates thier soul with yours.

Do not eat humans it will not end well.
One soul looked upon the wonders of the world with fascination. Drawn by a lust for knowledge and power. But he feared corruption, choosing not to partake as he withered... And died.

Fear not, the dark, my friends. And let the feast begin.

A Chance Encounter
"Nothing for it, I suppose." You mutter, gesturing for the girl to follow as you lift off once more. As you rise through the humid air, passing must be half a mile of purple moss and dried human waste, the tunnel opens into a large area as water falls into several divergent holes that appear identical to the one you emerge from.

A bass roar echoes through the area, followed by the sound of a heavy impact and breaking bones. You quickly soar over the edge of the rancid waterfall and see an oddly glowing man in a feathered helm laughing jovially as he plunges a bolt of lightning into the absurdly small head of a massive reptile. On a distant balcony is a man shouting encouragement to his comrade. As the luminous maniac clings to the beast and carves away at the creature's hide, the man on the upper balcony fires a truly massive arrow from his equally massive bow... only managing to shred one of the beast's atrophied wings.

In the time it takes for Louise to catch up to you, the deranged rider is knocked from his perch by what appears to be a prehensile rib from the creature's mangled torso... how they managed to inflict such damage escapes you, but their luck seems to be running out as the glowing man is crushed beneath a clawed foot and disappears entirely. Unsure of what to make of this rapid series of oddities, you settle for bathing the monstrosity in a constant stream of sparks, remembering Quelana's advice on dragon-like beings in this world.

Following your lead, Louise alternated between coating it's limbs with Ice Wall and blasting it's spine with explosions. Maintaining your elevation prevents your enemy from fighting back and it collapses after several minutes of punishment before exploding in a shower of ice and gore. Glowering at your apprentice, who ducks her head sheepishly, you wipe the flecks of ichor that managed to land on you face and slowly float down. Sometime during the shower of entrails, the souls collected by the giant lizard must have latched onto you, as there is an odd sense of weight on you that been there before. Though you don't feel restricted by their metaphorical weight, the sudden increase in 'souls' has given you a sense of what they feel like that killing swamp fauna hadn't helped with.

"Can we go home? Everything about this place is disgusting." You apprentice whines, not daring to let her shoes touch the foul substances coating the floor.

Shaking your head, you point toward the archer, who waves in an exaggerated manner. "Not yet, my apprentice, we still have much to discover in this land." You say, beginning the trek toward the stairs. "Besides, if we simply leave, Quelana will think us dead... Do you want that on your conscience?"

Shaking her head, the girl hurriedly flies ahead and touches down on the dryer stones near the staircase to wait. You, on the other hand, use the bottom of your staff to sift through any particularly large chunks of the slain monster in your path as you debate it's merit as food. It's mottled skin and gaping torso did not appear healthy, but the meat doesn't look to be spoiled or infested and you've yet to encounter any creature who's flesh was instantly lethal. Before you realize it, you've caught up with Louise and the two of you are met on the middle level by the (quite literally) decorated archer.

Dressed in green and purple clothing with many golden medallions and random accessories, the stranger's face twists into an unnaturally large smile as you nod in greeting. "Aye, Siwmae. Many thanks my friends, the little beasty seemed a mite too much for me, I'm afraid... Oh pardon my rudeness, I'm Einion of Zena." He says with a hearty laugh, the left half of his face coated in blue paint, the other appearing as if he'd suffered severe burns before having his eye ripped out and replaced with a tiny ball of fire.
