Welp, I suspected Dust reliant and propelled crafts wouldn't be able to fly out of orbital height for obvious reasons, but I didn't expected it to matter too much since this one is designed by X-COM and uses traditional earth tech and a bit of alien tech to work. At least the Gravity Dust, AKA Eezo, wasn't critical to operations.

As for what to do, since the Magicka Drain thing is basically a layer that surrounds the atmosphere, and not something that is expanded to cover the whole known universe of Remnant, then it should be safe to try to recharge now that the ship is outside that draining layer, or barrier. That and ensure the rest of the ship's propulsion systems can be functional again, along with protections and other safety systems before trying to land back onto Vale.

Honestly though, I think the Moon is the safest place to put the ship, since no one else can get to it at all. Maybe by placing a Gate to transport things from Vale to the Moon directly would be a better option, both to protect the ship from interfered with now that doubtlessly everyone knows what it can do, and to not have to bother with the barrier's effects again. It would still leave a point of weakness for the gate itself, but the much smaller size should also make it easier to protect than an entire ship.

That was so metal.

How do we defend against the effect while coming back, though?
I assumed this part meant Cynric himself knows how to protect against it:
It's fortuitous that you discovered this outside of an emergency scenario and now that you know exactly what is going on, you are confident that you can keep it from happening again... so long as the beings that put it in place aren't actively watching.
As in something similar to the way he used multiple types of wards to protect the ship during interdimensional travel.

If it doesn't work though, I'd vote for making a portal and keeping the ship on the Moon, since at least the magicka drain effect doesn't seem to persist all the way up there.

Can't we just keep renaming the ship into politically inconvenient names depending on where we're at? Like for now: the "Fist of Emperor Ironwood" or "Scourge of the Four Kingdoms" sounds nice.

I would love to fly around Middle-earth in "Morgoth's Herald".:lol:rofl:

Erm... Cynric isn't involved with the city of Daggerfall... Like... At all. I don't think that name will fit.
Sure, but I just like the symbolism of the name with the reversal of fall and rise. Plus he's a Breton and the Bretons traditionally come from the region of Daggerfall within Highrock because that's the area closest to where the Elves settled and started blending the lineages.

Ah, but the Reachmen and orthodox Bretons cultures have a bit of enmity for one another. High Rock Bretons consider them savage, daedra worshiping hedge mages at best and don't welcome them in their fiefdoms. People tend to resent that sort of treatment and Reachmen are no different in that regard. Cynric might not be the average Reachman and has used his people's Breton ancestry to his advantage, but I don't think from his established character that he would name a tangible result of his efforts after a place that would have had his mother hanged.
Reachmen are just Bretons that never fell to the worship of the Divines.
Mostly. The difference starts with how orthodox Bretons are the product of generations of Derenni laying with their human slaves who then went on to primarily breed among themselves. Reachmen are a mix of those same master-slave relations who went on to mix with human tribes that never got captured, Orsimer they met in the Jerral mountains fleeing persecution for their 'wild magics', mortalphilic daedra, and members of the other races who joined them over time.
It's even funnier because you could do that to almost any similar situation in TES. Eg: Vvardenfell is where Veloth lead the ChimerReachmen's ancestors.

The Reach's Revenge
Reachman's Revanchista
The Briarheart
The Spriggan's Return
Like them all. The second is very appropriate for the culture and possibly for the character if you guys ever intend to go retake the Reach from the Nords/Empire/Dragons. I also particularly like Spriggan's Return, not so much for meaning behind it, but because it definitely sounds like what someone from TES would name their ship.

CCS Spriggan's Return. (Cynric's Citadel/Capital Ship)

PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER
Not ten minutes after the mystery craft had taken off, a trio of bullheads were soaring in for a landing in Mountain Glenn.

"Keep a sharp eye out, men. We don't know what that ship is capable of, when it will return, where it went, or who it belongs to." Winter's tone was calm and her words concise to avoid any upset or distractions.

Nobody in her line of work were fond of unknowns and an airship a mile long and matching no designs on record taking off from long abandoned ruins was a very big unknown.

Continuing after a moment's pause, she added, "Detain anyone you see. I don't care if they are refugees, returning Huntsmen, or Ozpin himself miraculously returning after his... tragic accident."

Giving her a disgusted look, Qrow groaned, "I can't believe this. Not even a week and you're all jumping ship to crucify the one man who's keeping everything together."

"I would never betray General Ironwood like that." She sniffed.

That wasn't what the reprobate meant and she knew it, but it was a minor revenge for coming along and making her babysit him. She would never question her General's orders, but couldn't he have pushed the drunkard on someone else?

Better yet, why not toss him in the brig until he sobers up?

Considering the fact that she was almost certain his veins were more full of alcohol and blood, it would be a gloriously peaceful month without him incessantly interrupting her work over perceived slights against him.

"Oh, riiiight... I forgot how much you enjoy the taste of Jimmy's boots." He taunted like a child.

Despite the immaturity of his words, or maybe because of it, Winter couldn't help but shoot back, "And I keep forgetting how blind you are to basic facts! Ozpin repeatedly refused to arrange proper security and did his best to avoid the aid we offered, leading to a string of thefts both commercial and military. He instated the man who we suspect sent Cinder fall to the festival in the first place, which makes him responsible for this disaster whether or not he caused the explosion himself. On top of that, he made it a habit to withhold vital information and now an airship larger than anything short of Amity Colosseum just took off from a place Ozpin personally condemned and restricted access to!"

"He was just trying to keep you from scaring people by stomping around with your mechs and warships. Did you guys think for a minute that maybe, just maybe Oz had a plan? Or did Metaldick just want to play with his toys so much he didn't care?"

"I don't know if you're blinded by faith, brain damaged from constant drinking, or just naturally simple, but we in Atlas prefer to put our trust in what brings results." Winter snarled, all pretense of civility thrown out the window by that point as she grabbed him by his messy collar.

Qrow just scoffed in her face, "Yeah, that turned out swell, didn't it?"

"You can't possibly blame Atlas for this disaster!" This projecting of their own failures on others was a perfect example of why she disliked the other kingdoms.

"Sure I can." He replied smugly. "You gonna use that or are you just teasing me?"

Looking down to where his eyes were aimed, Winter realized that she had her sword half-drawn in agitation. Slamming it back down, she shoved him back and straightened her appearance. How was it that he could so easily infuriate her with such regularity? Specialist Winter Schnee was well known to be unflappable, yet she couldn't spend ten minutes in the presence of this hooligan without her temper flaring.

When the man slid open the door despite her protests and leapt out into the city below, there was palpable relief among her subordinates. It was shameful that they'd witnessed that outburst, but they at least seemed to be taking it in stride and would no doubt joke about it later.

-------------------------------

After removing all of the spheres of inert Dust, you prepared to try something slightly risky in order to salvage them.

The first step was to take a full eight hour rest to get enough magicka to start the process and after that, you spent some time arranging the Dust in as tight of a circle as you could on the lunar surface. With help from a curious Lily, who'd woken up at some point during your sleep, it didn't take long to finish.

That done, the risky part comes next.

Given what you know of the properties of your current environment thanks to Moira and Raymond, you know that three spells will be needed for what you intend. Waterbreathing to keep your lungs full of air, Ebonyflesh to protect against tiny meteors and damage from a lack of pressure, and the strongest Resist Fire protection you can cast. These are only necessary because the few protective suits Raymond cobbled together cut you off from outside magicka. Magics in effect, you reach up to unclasp your helmet.

Not wearing a suit herself, Lily tries to say something, but no sound comes out. From what little you can tell with your admittedly minor skill in lip reading, she's trying to warn off from doing so. You loose sight of her as the seal comes undone and air rushes out in a large puff of mist.

An intense and overwhelming surge of power slams into you as the helmet clears your head. Carried by the light of sun and stars with nothing to stop it, the raw magicka around you is almost nauseating in potency. It is actually to the point where you are reconsidering this plan of action. Though your reserves are already almost back to empty from the high cost spells, you will only have a moment to pull this off... but you've already come this far and not doing it would mean that all of that Dust was wasted. Dust that cannot be as easily replaced a second time around.

Having someone else do this is also not an option, as Louise would likely destroy her already damaged soul and explode or something and Cattleya is nowhere near the skill level needed for this sort of thing.

Bracing yourself with that knowledge in mind, you finish removing the suit and activate Dragonskin.

Immediately your Magicka spikes back to full and rises beyond, knocking you to your knees. Only absorbing half of the incoming energy is still too much to bear for any length of time and you desperately rush to divert it into the Dust orbs. Your skin literally starts to burn as the process drags on, time losing any meaning when all of your focus is put toward directing the energies at your fingertips. By sheer force of will, you manage to endure the brief moments that require you to stop and recast your protections until it starts to form a rhythm.

Distance stretches and bends around you the longer this goes on, a dull glow returning to the indigo balls of magical dirt. Gravity shifts sporadically around each sphere causing depressions to form, fractured rock to start floating, and a constant tugging from all sides. When you finally stop absorbing power, you stagger back to the ship and collapse in the hallway outside the airlock, leaving a disturbed Lily to collect everything as you lay there and cast a few healing spells to burn off excess magicka as much as to repair any damage.

You are never doing that again.

Better to return and ignore Ironwood unless we are fired upon.

Also Worldferry is a perfect name because its benign and still sort of accurate without giving any hints at all to things which might ruin things for Cyrnic.

[X] Explore the Lunar surface, possibly lay the groundwork for a base nearby.

If we can set up a teleportation rig up on the moon then we can avoid the barrier that saps our magicka.

How big are the doorways to our ship? I'm half tempted to have Cattleya take the opportunity to use the ambient magicka to make an awesome golem-mech, but there's not much point if it won't fit.
