[X] Visiting the Agriculture district.

If agriculture can't be optimized with zombies then it's important to optimize with technology as much as we can. We can recruit labour from anywhere, but few settings will have as much tech as Remnant so it's more important to copy their food production technology.

Vale Agriculture
Having left Cattleya to her writing with the threat of telling Louise what she did if she stopped before finishing two thousand forms, you find yourself in front of a tall building. Just one of hundreds of identical such structures, the twenty story building is part of a block of four that are connected by bridges every five floors. This layout is repeated across the entire district for the most part, the only exceptions being the ones that are clearly storage silos and a few fields packed with cattle.

"Mr. Tyne, a pleasure to meet you at last." A man in beige coveralls greets you as you walk through the doors. "I'll admit, it was a surprise to hear somebody was actually interested in what we do here, but we're more than happy to show you around."

Shaking the man's hand, you nod offer, "Being in the business of feeding people, I thought it would be a good idea to see where most of my produce comes from."

"You know, I swung by your restaurant the other day with the wife and kids. I think it's great how you're taking in all those faunus... and boy, do they need all the help they can get now that most businesses are too afraid to risk hiring one of the bad ones."

Nodding along where appropriate, you spend the rest of the afternoon touring the compound. As it turns out, the majority of their food is grown indoors. Shelves upon shelves of plants are grown on racks, each separated by only a few inches to allow for inspection and harvesting. Strips of bluish lights are run along the bottom of each rack to provide light for the plants below, an elegant yet simple solution that Raymond could likely copy with ease. Dense mats of roots are grown tightly knit and half submerged in nutrient rich water while small fans circulate air above them. It isn't just vegetables either; fruits that would normally come from trees are instead found budding off of vines that hang from the top racks.

Taking a sample of the solution for your own purposes is as easy as submerging a vial in the liquid while the man rambles on. With a little study, you are certain that the recipe can be recreated. As for the specific plant species themselves, you simply purchase some before leaving. Cattleya can be put to the task of encouraging the roots to grow in the same knitted manner.

The livestock however proves to be a trickier problem for the people of Vale.

Born and raised as normal cows, chickens, pigs, and what have you, the animals are bred for longevity and size more than anything else. When one is selected for slaughter, the real process begins. Each chosen meat producer is strapped to a table and has their Aura unlocked before being lobotomized. Once incapable of reaction it is kept on life support, has its meat continually removed in sections, and regrown to be removed again. This process continues for several hours until the animal eventually dies from a combination of rapid aging and its soul falling apart at the seams.

The technicians involved in the process repeatedly assured you that the animals feel none of it, but you wave them off each time. It isn't as if you are actually concerned about the beasts, so their efforts to keep you from objecting are simply a nuisance.

In the end, you return to your place of business with new insight on how to keep your ship stocked with food and several matters to attend to if you wish to see it done. With Raymond needed elsewhere, you will need to buy the required equipment in order to not set back construction time, but setting it up should be an easy, if monotonous, task. Placing an order through the CCT network is a rather convenient way to shop, though waiting a few days for your purchase to arrive is less than ideal. Still, you aren't exactly stretched for time and once they arrive you can have Cattleya start growing the plants to fill the racks to be put in place when the ship is ready for loading. The meat situation can easily be remedied with an almost gratuitous use of healing magic instead of the complex and wasteful system you witnessed, something Louise is quite suited for.

The next day:

[] Start Interviewing faunus to crew the ship.

[] Contact the Council of Vale to find out what paperwork is needed for a business to own a Bullhead.

Honestly, Remnant is probably the perfect setting to get food-tech for our ship. It has a focus on compact indoors high-efficiency growth, and the technology to enable that, which is exactly the kind of situation we'll have in our ship.

Now that that's sorted, though, time to see about getting us some firepower. We'll probably need it.

Absolutely perfect food product maximization due to Remnant's premium on space.

A bullhead should be better than nothing as transport when the inevitable Vytal festival comes, but I dont think it is a good long term transport due to its over reliance on Dust.

That is incredibly disturbing. Not necessarily more disturbing than the cramped living conditions of livestock in our world, but still that is a shocking solution. Also poor Louise, stuck using her magic for commoner work.

Moving on we see Cynric acting like Cynric and manages a short trip without injuring himself. Let's see how long it lasts. Too bad he didn't run into PENNY while he was out and about.

Is there a "horrified" response? Because daaaaaaaammmmmnnnnn
I've seen something similar in a story on RRL called "orc lord". Where they had captured a monster that can regenerate from a single body part, then they would chop it up into parts let some parts regenerate to then harvest the resulting clones until the clones simply dies...

You just reminded me of a similar idea explored as a setting for a DnD campaign: link.

I wonder what sort of beast the crew would rally around for daily meals, special occasions, etc.

A Bureaucratic Snag
Walking down the stairs after speaking with a receptionist at City Hall, you call out to those in the storeroom, "Who amongst you is either an experienced pilot or interested in becoming such?"

"Uh... Herman can fly." A blonde slip of a girl answers when none of those around her look to have a clue. Scratching a patch of scales on her neck, she shrugs. "At least, I think so. He was telling stories about smug- er... transporting stuff up North."

Not calling attention to her outing the man as a criminal, you wave her off. "Wonderful, go find him and tell him he is no longer working i-"

"No, no, please don't fire him because of me! I didn't mean to say anything, I probably misunderstood what he was talking about, really!"

You just palm your face and wait for her to finish. "Yes, Fine. Tell him he is to report to City Hall for the next week instead of working here. I need him to complete the courses required for piloting commercial aircraft so that we can purchase a bullhead."

"R-right! I'll go get him right away, sir!" She declares, sprinting out of the room before popping her head back in and adding, "Thank you, you won't regret this."

With that taken care of, and apparently giving that young woman the impression that she was in your debt for overlooking her careless words, you head back up to take care of things on your end. According to the the person you spoke to on your Scroll, Kwama Korp needs a licensed pilot and a landing pad that meets Vale Airspace Control regulations before you can purchase even an Air Bus. To buy a Bullhead requires both of those as well as a Grade Two weapon permit, one grade above the likes of X-com's rifles due to being large enough to need mounting on a vehicle, but still two grades below most Huntsman weapons. While the default chaingun is good enough for most aerial Grimm in small numbers, its lack of advanced metals and alternate forms makes it of much more limited use against larger threats, but upgrading without being a Huntsman or military member would require regular government inspections and safety courses.

Rather than entertain the bureaucracy, you'd rather use the standard weapon for now and refit it later if you can't find something better. If nothing else, you could always wait until Louise graduates Beac- Nope, you can't even finish that thought. After everything that has happened since you met the girl, including recent events at that academy? The odds of managing three and a half more years without a monumental disaster may as well be zero.

On a more positive note, you already have a landing pad installed for produce deliveries, so all you need is to do is register it with the VAC.

As you send the completed forms to their appropriate destination an hour later, a low chime sounds from your Scroll before the screen changes without you input. An orange haired, serpentine faunus greets you with a cheerful smile.

"Salutations, Mr. Tyne! General Ironwood requested I arrange a meeting between the two of you."

Raising a brow at the apparent General's aide, her appearance being far enough from the norm that it is hard to guess her age other than late teens to early adulthood, you ask, "Might I know what for?"

As far as you know, you haven't done anything to attract the attention of any military. If you remember correctly from Glynda's summary of Remnant, Ironwood is also the head of the Northernmost academy. Ozpin's meddling, perhaps?

"Of course!" She responds brightly. "I was recently involved in a vehicular collision and my friend Louise, who says you're her teacher, healed me."

Ah... It makes sense now.

"General Ironwood has concerns about the side effects. He also says he wishes to discuss more private matters, he did not inform me as to what." The snake faunus finishes, a wide smile on her face despite the aforementioned health concerns.

More connections is always nice. We might even be able to get some weapons trade going.

If possible we should see if we can get to Full metal alchemist. Getting a reliable way to create iridium would be amazing

No way would I trust Ironwood to not do some 'aggressive negotiations' after his reaction to Louise and her magic.

Can we pit the academies against each other, I wonder?

Well if nothing else this will give Cynric the idea of stealing one of the Atlas airships to strip for parts when the shit hits the fan. (by seeing the inside and how shiny they are)

And In more important news he can introduce Shen and Lily to their Remnant counterpart in golem based necromancy...

When it comes to magic, we hold the cards. Cynric isn't easily overwhelmed by force of personality, and Louise is loyal enough that they can't bypass us to get at her.

If they refuse to play ball, then maybe we earn an enemy but we're also approaching the point where we can all safely leave this reality behind if we feel like it, so I don't feel too concerned.

We shall continue our smear campaign against Oz (which isnlt really that hard since he doesn't tell anyone anything).
