When you arrive back to base, your driver gently shakes you awake and opens your door for you. You sleepily thank him as you make your way back to your room, people sending you sidelong looks in the corridors. You ignore them and stretch as you walk, a satisfying cracking noise echoing out as you twist your spine. Ooooh yeah, that's better. The woman next to you shivers at the noise, which is quietly satisfying for some reason.
When you get back to your room, Morgan has food and a cup of tea ready for you again. You walk over and take the cup from her, a long sip half emptying the mug, before you let out a relieved sigh. "Thanks, I really needed that." She walks with you as you sit down at the dinner table, Una running out of your room to glomp you around the stomach. You take a step back to steady yourself and smile down at her, gently ruffling her hair as she squeaks at you, before smoothing it back down.
"Hey, I missed you." She lets go of you reluctantly as you move towards the dinner table, taking the seat next to you.
"What was it like?" She eventually starts asking questions in-between mouthfuls.
"Mmm?"
"The bird, was it strong?" Ah.
"Kinda, it took a lot to put it down and it was fast, but it wasn't really that hard." There was no way you were telling her how precarious the fight actually was, she'd never let you go.
Una nods, satisfied by your answer as she goes back to eating, sausages and grated cheese in tortilla wraps today. Pretty good. You clear your throat of food. "Actually, I was thinking about taking tomorrow off, if that's ok?" You direct your question to Morgan, who taps a finger on the table a few times before nodding.
"Yes, that's fine, so long as you are willing to double up on one day. You have time allotted for emergencies, but it's best not to fall behind everyone else. It would be bad if they entered a zone they thought was clear of really dangerous creatures and it wasn't." You nod at her words.
"I can do that just fine, try and line up two of the weaker ones for a single day?"
She nods herself as she looks upwards, thinking. "I can do that, these were the most dangerous ones. Karen wanted to get them out of the way first, in case something happened." She frowns a little at the wording, but continues. "From here on out, it should mostly be either supporting other teams or dealing with swarming enemies, there are only... one? Maybe two powerful creatures you might have to fight and we are currently trying to negotiate with one of them, she would be a big help to have on side."
You make an interested noise as you take a bite, so she continues. "Her race have some sort of conceptual healing that is native to them. It has a lot of conditions and things for it to work properly, but if they are met they can heal anything." She leans forwards to whisper, despite knowing full well that you are alone and your room is soundproofed. "I've heard they can even reverse ageing completely, which is why they are so reclusive."
Now that, is interesting. You can't even imagine the effects that such a thing could have upon the human race if it was unleashed fully. Weren't there food crisis's and an enormous amount of money going to old people anyway? What would it be like if people never died of old age...
You shake your head and put the thought out of your mind, you really don't know enough to be thinking about this anyway. Karen can handle it, it's her job, probably.
You help wash the dishes, and settle down to read with Una for several hours, then go to bed. You aren't really tired, because you slept for a good four hours on the journey home, but it's hard for Una to sleep without you.
When you wake up in the morning, you are feeling full of energy and only slightly sore from the lingering pains of being struck by a lightening bolt. That one tingling nerve has finally healed, so you are good to go.
