Heck, alright, I'll jump on the bandwagon and go for the high risk high reward option.

Ling Qi also has a history of taking all the danger on herself and being utterly unwilling to let anyone she cares about risk anything at all if she can help it and THAT habit is also bad and should be avoided.
 
Our Yin arts are Myriad Roots Succession, Final Frost's Serenade, Thief of Names, Laughing Flight of the Wind Thief, and Unstoppable Glacier's March (lol. lmao, even).

Both options would probably involve wanting to use Yin arts. Honestly the most notable problem is MRS, since I know a lot of people were hoping we'd use our new defensive art with the bulwark option. I guess this is a good argument for stealth? Sure.

Even aside from tantalizing loot, a big thing for me is writing consequences or whatever. We had that hint drop, where we saw a glimpse of that little controller fleeing the merman corpse. Not following up on that at all would be pretty unsatisfying, and I don't see how the mass combat option could follow up on it. It's extremely speedy and bailed when its host matter was neutralized. Seems doubtful we're catching one, or even getting a good look at one, via conventional combat. Especially not with our Yin arts offline. Ambush is the only viable option for that bit of writing actually going somewhere.

And I think about the indelible shape of the writing and our part in it. I don't really want us to be responsible for a permanently unsatisfying, and not even purposefully unsatisfying, mark on an otherwise entertaining adventure arc.

I suppose yrs could go back and edit that bit out retroactively in order to spare future readers the awkwardness, but that doesn't really feel like a win on our part.

inb4 the little critter(s?) are in-universe deliberate bait drawing us into the trap of a malign cthonic intelligence. (This would be cool too)

I wonder if it's possible for LQ's personal River God technique to evolve into being salmon now. They're much more hardworking fish, ascend waterfalls, and can be found in icy rivers. Much more thematically appropriate than carp.
