Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Ok, in an effort to get at least one of the two things I think we need, I am removing the exaltation security this turn, in order to at least deal with Peabody. I am moving that AP to Artifact Workshop crafting, because the cost of train building is 4 AP:
[] NEW [SGI] A Train for Porter: Though he is a lot more happy for the company and the rush of energy though hidden cables Porter retains his fascination with trains... something the Spirit Binders of the City of Journey could help him with Costs 4 AP
and this means that @uju32 \s plan will not get us the train this turn, not unless we commit more resources to it (like SGI AP in addition to main AP).

By moving one additional AP to artifact workshop I make the probability of it finishing this turn 75% (Joe will need to roll 1 on 1d4 for us not to get enough AP to finish the project). In terms of writing this makes my plan shorter than uju's I think. This still deals with Peabody, who is an immediate threat. @Yzarc , @Azais if I understand those were the specific deal breakers for you.

1)I would appreciate the exact citation, if you can find it.

Either way, Exalted astrology is not a thing anymore. There is no Loom of Fate, and Holden explicitly says he ripped it out.
Even when it was, it was a thing for Sidereals.
Not Solaroids.
Here:
A woman's voice rings in your mind, strong and firm, but lowered to a near whisper, as one reading aloud without meaning to: "Servants and jailers, guardians and destroyers, born anew to each cycle to repeat the choice of their forebearerors or be undone. Born mortal, born human, they are the key and the lock, the stars guide the way of beautiful lights. That that reminds me of something... there. The Age of Beauty also called the Age of Legends, not light but soul. The Starborn have been reincarnating for as long as there have been stars in the sky, the stars were made to guide them... that is probably metaphor. I sure hope so... Theirs is the burden of keeping out or keeping down Those which they have banished. Who are these Starborn though? Who will they be?"
This is a crown-granted flashback to Dresden's mother, who was researching how to make Dresden one.

We know that in this particular quest divinatory abilities exist, including those that see the future. Further, we know that we are outside of Fate. Gard specifically calls us such, in these exact terms, when we first meat her:
As she measures you up you return the favor. Between the sword callouses on her hands and the dagger-sharpness of her gaze you guess she is a lot more than what she seems. Her first words to you confirm it. "You walk outside fate Margret Katherine, beware where you step."

"You have the advantage of me my lady," you answer formally. Usun does not know for sure what she is, though he guesses that she must be older than she looks.

"Gard, Sigrun Gard," she answers after a moment, leaving you unsure of what to say next.
Further-further we know that three of the Maidens survived and are / were the Fates:
Surely the soul of a god of war that dwells in the depths of the sea should taste of brine or of blood, but in truth it tastes of sugar and brandy of flames swallowed whole. Like the fabled mead of poetry it seems to you that though the haze of and twisting flames upon your tongue a verse in seven parts emerges.:

Once there were maidens three of their kind, mourning three sisters lost,
One without name forgotten, two paying war's bitter cost.
The first set to spin destiny's thread, the second to measure,
The last to cut, ending lives with neither sorrow nor pleasure.
But whence came the thread, the world's secret treasure?
Once there were giants of earth and sea, or fire and frost
A bargain now forgotten, a bargain now broken. Lo, they are lost
It's quite likely that something at least survives of them.

To continue, our alchemical tradition is astrology-based. Or, rather, any mortal using our malcoffee recipe would need to study astrology:

"Love you too Bob. Wanna see some sorcery for the twenty first century?" You might have shorted him out with that one, but you are too busy to look up. Unlike how Harry works your integration of alchemy is a thing of precise measurements and careful timing, though one might not be able to tell that to look at you work. What worth a clock when you can feel the sun in the sky and measure to the millimeter the speed of its apparent arc.

Water to earth passes, a pinch of salt from Maras in Peru. Earth of fire is born , a pumice stone far flying. Yet of fire life may spring as the lodgepole pinecone new sprouted. The glass clinks the essence twists, a serpent of green light that that twists and thrashes fit to break the fragile glass

All the time in the world is yours, as though its trapped between your fingers
Thus with steady hands you breathe into it, from life air and last though certainly not least gathered in a unpretentious bucket in the backyard, rain water you had collected overnight, at once the green flame is quenched in inky blackness, still as it is filled with subtle power.

"Well... err it's black like coffee," you say laying the sample on the table and stepping away, well away as Harry looks at the vial with more than eyes of flesh.

"Looks fine." He sighs, though whether in relief to let go of the Sight or because of what he saw you do not know. "Is it supposed to be singing?"

"It's supposed to be in harmony with itself so it can fold the body and mind into the shape desired without stirring chaos," you answer, in what you hope is pardonable smugness.

"Like the sun across the sky," Bob muses. "Anyone else would have to do this where they can see the sun."

"No, that's..." you trail off, realizing you had drawn a tempo from the sun, you just hadn't been conscious of it until Bob pointed it out, no more than someone would be concision of the use of one's heart when walking across a room. Alas you do not have long to ponder the matter because Harry asks: "Can I have some of this?"
Sun is a star. The closest star, yes, but its position and influence is firmly within the school of astrology, in my opinion.

Finally, divination as a path exists, and astrology is a well-established divinatory tradition. It's reasonable to assume that in a supernatural world at least some schools of astrology get at least something right.

So, there's a lot of evidence that there might be something to astrology. We lose nothing to checking it out.

2) Do you remember the Heaven's Gate cult committing suicide in 1997 when Comet Haley-Bopp showed up in order to ascend to the aliens out there? Or the various scams, like Scientology, that make a killing from fleecing people's interest in aliens?
Do you remember the mass UFO sightings of the mid-Cold War era, and how they affected Western society?

Again, this is not stuff you throw out into the public sphere willy-nilly because lol.
And its frankly beyond the concerns of our game without you inserting it.
No, I don't, because it's a relatively minor event, and cults kill people and themselves often enough and for enough reasons that I don't consider this something outstanding. I expect the results to arrive in more than a decade's time. Because astronomy is hard. And the Wheel is Turning, things are going to be changing anyway. It's not" because lol". It's because we can help people, and it costs us nothing to do.
3) I dont agree. Harry Dresden did not know it.
That doesnt meant that senior wizards do not. Harry is a baby wizard, and he is lacking a lot of information that his elders have witheld for one reason or the other.

See my comment about the Sight having a precog function; Harry wasnt told that until the end of Small Favor, because telling a wizard about it prematurely is at best irritating as they start claiming to see prophecy all the time, and at worst can incentivize the sort of confirmation bias that gets them killed.

And we are deliberately not advertising the general breadth of our information-gathering ability.
Remember how the Big Book of Yomi Wan was literally delivered into the hands of Simon Peabody, giving him and his masters a detailed guide to Yomi Wan and revealing how much Molly knows about the place?
Yes, I remember, which is why, at least for now, I am only voting to start writing, and not distributing, and writing the least dangerous thing we have. Writing your knowledge down is a tradition that is well established among wizards for a reason. Remember that Dresden Files are supposed to be Dresden writing stuff down? How since Merlin from master to apprentice the tradition of note keeping is passed down?

Yes, knowledge can be dangerous. Losing knowledge is even more so.
4) A professional carpenter's license requires a high school diploma, a written exam, and supervised work experience before anyone will let you on a work site. Especially if they carry worksite insurance.
This is much the same for a lot of practical trades and professions.

And Michael is a professional carpenter, not a woodworker that does woodcrafting. That suggests that he goes to worksites.
When he was crippled in Small Favor, he became an apparent construction manager for building houses, because thats where his work experience apparently lies(most houses in the US are wood frame).
We can help him in drafting plans, and helping in areas where we won't be confronted.

What I don't understand is why Uju leave's 6 AP unused for no reason?

Like, we have them, why not use them? At this point, this is more of a sticker for me than what they would be used for.

It's just a gigantic waste.

--[][WRITE-IN ALCHEMY]: Cooking the good stuff: Produce Malcoffee, Astarte Venerian, Nabu Mercury, and Prima Metallum for yourself and your allies: 3 SGI AP
*checks again*
Molly doesnt need extra Malcoffee, and there's no reason to simply stockpile Prima Metallum outside of when you actually need it. That just creates book-keeping requirements for the QM that have little gameplay impact.

However.
Im genuinely amazed that the QM allowed either Astarte Venerian or Nabu Mercury as Alchemy recipes; they basically reduce the cost of raising Attributes to 1XP. Those things should not be 3-dot recipes.

If the QM has no problem with SGI being used to make them, I have no trouble with including them.
But its best to ask:

@DragonParadox
QUESTION
Can SGI clones brew the 3-dot Alchemical potions Astarte Veneian and Nabu Mercury?
And do you have any gameplay objections to my simply having them spend SGI Actions attempting to make some?
Bear in mind that these will allow Molly (Or Lydia for that matter. Or Lash) max out Attributes for a fraction of the regular cost.

I checked already:
4) I added several SGI activities as write-ins, pending @DragonParadox approval:
4.1) Family that crafts together. Michael has a mundane job, and we have craft 4, favored. We can be of great help to him, and interact with him in a far more human, and importantly mundane human capacity. Not as a war queen of the Fivefold Courts, brass armor and flaming sword, the flaming crown on her head, nor as a sorceress supreme, the arcane words rending reality at our command. As a craftswoman and his daughter.
4.2) The stars were made to guide them. We have a coordinate system for celestial objects that our exaltation supplied. We have coordinates of worlds with alien life. We know that stars were made to guide Starborn, and OOC we know of exalted Astrology. Doing some preliminary investigations in the background to prime us and Harry (who, it seems, would do great as a Starborn, by design of the modern universe itself) to learn Divination (thus further obscuring the Crown, which is important) costs us nothing, and might help us a lot
4.3) Little green men. Ok, this is my personal bias here. We have knowledge that people in SETI, honest scientists and enthusiasts have dedicated and sacrificed their lives towards finding. It costs us almost nothing to share. And something might shake out of this, given Library's comments on first contact experience.
4.4) From the pen of. Big Book of Yomi Wan is a great resource to hit, and a useful bargaining chip. Making a book on how to defend your soul seems inoffensive, useful, and a good payment for Bob's advice and help. I would have tried for "Old Realm ABCs", but that's far more dangerous.
4.5) Cooking the good stuff. Setting up and producing alchemical concoctions we paid for seems like a logical use of free SGI points.
All these work yeah.

Didn't DragonParadox say that clones do anything that mortals can do? So they have no access to anything Exalted and Essence related but if it could be done by a wizard or other mortal they can do it. They just won't get the benefit of Excellency so there is an actual chance of failing if they don't stack the odds.

Thank you for the citation.
1)The question is what did Maggie LeFay know. It didnt say everything she knew was accurate, or interpreted correctly.

2) Its stated she's speaking in metaphor in your own quote.
There's 200 billion trillion stars in the sky, and even more planetary bodies. Some of them support life.
They werent put there to provide prediction to Earth.

This isnt Creation, where stars served no other purpose.

Its an example of the sort of shit that can and does go down with news or rumors of major social change.
That cults do heinous shit without instigation does not mean its OK to suddenly make it easier for them to work.

Nevermind how much easier it would be for the Outsider cult we ran into to recruit in a time when mass media is literally saying "look to the stars, there's life there."

SETI listens for radio communications; that we know that ET life exists doesnt make them technological yet, or that they broadcast radio within the roughly 100 light year radius within which normal planetary radio comms can be detected before degrading into useless background noise.

I see no real gain to this, and significant potential harm, to us and others.
Let SETI do their work.
We can butt out. Its not like we dont have a full plate.

Yes, knowledge can be dangerous. Losing knowledge is even more so.
There is zero evidence that this is lost knowledge to wizards, just that Dresden did not know it.
Nevermind it being lost knowledge to the rest of the setting.

The Archive exists, and predates Christianity; we only learned this by snooping on Christian monks, so she knows it.
We know OOC that Ebenezar McCoy has records dating back to the Merlin that he's never shared with Dresden, and Dresden didnt even know they existed until Turn Coat.

Odin canonically trained the Merlin in wizardry according to Butcher and he's right there.

We cant even use the Sight, and have no further insights on it even if we wanted to share. We have to learn the basics of it from Dresden before even trying to buy it for 15XP, and you want us to write a book on it.
This is the dictionary definition of borrowing trouble. And frankly, hubris for multiple reasons.

We can help him in drafting plans, and helping in areas where we won't be confronted.
Carpenters do not draft plans, they do work drafted by others.
The person who designed the house hires carpenters to do the work he designed, not to draft new plans.

Chaotic Good paladin Michael Carpenter is not smuggling his high school age daughter onto a worksite so she can do his job for him.

I am confirming, because my first instinct on looking at that interaction is "This is mad broken"
Hence I want to be sure that the QM is aware of what they are ruling, and what it enables.
If they're OK, fine. I'll happily vote for it.

But that confirmation avoids having to deal with retcons.

No, she hoped that it was speaking in metaphor. Given what else we know, I highly suspect that the text was entirely literal.
Divination =/= astrology.
Astrology can be a form of divination. Same as card reading, prophetic dreams, and many others. It may also be a factor in major (or not so major) magic workings. Like making sure your son is a starborn.
Its not a relatively minor event.
Its an example of the sort of shit that can and does go down with news or rumors of major social change.

We can butt out. Its not like we dont have a full plate.
When we discovered aliens, we specifically asked for "what SETI was looking for". SO, those are technological civilization that send signals. SETI doesn't know where to look. We do. It costs us nothing to nudge them into specific direction.
There is zero evidence that this is lost knowledge to wizards, just that Dresden did not know it.

Archive doesn't share knowledge. Odin doesn't share it for free. And has a higher price tag than we do.

And has a higher price tag than we do.
As far as I understand both Molly's and Lydia's general price tag is "Now deal with it". They are both perfectly willing to elucidate upon most obscure of subjects related to their sphere of interests getting into all kinds of minor details and really uncomfortable truths. And the biggest problem is that if they started they are not going to stop until they make you understand what they are talking about. Even if you really preferred they didn't.

@Yog You don't think that addressing the baby wizards first would make the Peabody and general rat issue the WC has a lot easier to handle? I'm not saying your wrong I just want to know why.

They can, but it is actively dangerous. I will be rolling that and 'clone botched the brewing' is something you are only likely to notice when you down it.

Thinking about it, our interaction with the sight is probably going to freak them out more than it necessarily should relative to our other feats. It's wizard exclusive; other people can have good senses but few are even anywhere close and none have all the same advantages.

Someone who isn't a mortal wizard demonstrating the ability to learn it would be like watching a tree grow actual human eyes to blink at you.

@Yog You don't think that addressing the baby wizards first would make the Peabody and general rat issue the WC has a lot easier to handle? I'm not saying your wrong I just want to know why.
No, I have the exact opposed logic. I think that handling Peabody first will make Training Wizards action much easier and less prone to provocations, sabotage, and espionage. Because I expect Peabody and/or other traitors in WC to have a hand in making the decision to make the training facility in Chicago. Merlin has brought up a possiblity of a third party intentionally messing up our alliance before. This is it, I think, and it needs to be prevented as much as possible. So, Peabody first, wizards second.
They can, but it is actively dangerous. I will be rolling that and 'clone botched the brewing' is something you are only likely to notice when you down it.
The clones don't get passive "favored ability" status for occult?
@Degorium @Yog That sounds like a huge problem especially since Molly wouldn't be the only one drinking them. Y'all might want to change that part of your votes.
Yeah, ok, hold on, I'll have to check further details.

If it's actively dangerous, I'll probably switch to something else. Maybe wizard training to go with traitor handling? It should flow well narratively. Or do the brewing ourselves. Or make 1 dot splendors for clones who do the brewing.

Yes, it always takes at least a day to get everything ready
Ok. Added to the plan.

So, we are back to 50% chance of completion for the Forge, but we get alchemical production (malcoffee was already there, but if I understand correctly we actually need to setup things for background attribute potions, like we did with malcoffee itself. Am I right, @DragonParadox ? ). The splendor is not wasted, as it can be remade into something better in the future. I'll provide a write-up soon.

This way we get to actually use what we bought.

Not really an issue as far as I can tell.
1) You can use the Crown to screen batches of them
2) Molly has a poison negator charm on her buy list
3) Tiffany has Awaken 2: Cleanse for dealing with poisons

So, since you have no problem with it, I'll edit my plan to include clones brewing batches of those potions for discounts to raising Mental and Social Attributes.

They'll probably eventually write it up to Molly having been a wizard previous to whatever happened.
Now Lydia learning the Sight will freak them out harder, because there's no such justification.

    [X]Plan Consolidating our base
-[X] [SGI] Attend school, you have friends at school and you would like to have memories of senior year and graduation, even if they don't teach you anything worthwhile
-[X] In the Sky a Thousand Eyes: If you see something, you can stick a demon in it. It occurs to you that satellites are definitely something you can see with the right tools, although you'll have to figure out which ones you want and what orders to give them.
-[X] [SGI] Look at Chicago's Minor Talents, until now you've been isolated from the Chicago supernatural scene, now that you can get in touch with them without necessarily having your dad with you all the time. came to change that... although, considering how Mouse and McCoy thought you were bad news at first, maybe you should bring Dad or Harry to some of them, just as an introduction
--[X] Alphas, Harry's friends, close in age to you and work to keep monsters off the streets near the University, they seem really cool
--[X] Friends in Low Places, she may work for Marcone, but Grad was really nice and you're curious about her. Luckily you remember the number Dad dialed to contact Marcone
--[X] Spiritual Speaker, Mortimer Lindquist is the real deal, a true medium among fakes, and unlike Pauline, he's good enough at it, or just good enough at marketing to make a job of it. His books are also really cool
-[X] A friend in need. You promised Rosie she would help and will do so, with material and ethereal problems
--[X] Moving, you are already of legal age and you certainly don't lack money, the sooner you get Rosie out of that house the better
-[X] NEW Secure the Golden Shard: The Temple of Descending Ra contains a mechanism of ancient wonder at the center of which rests a shard of power born from ages past. Although they have been good guardians until now, you still worry that such a thing is only protected by mortal magic and faith. See if you can get them to accept more protections
-[X] Higher Education [SGI] Updated: Boston is even more free of supernatural suitors than when you found it, but you've done little to engage with the mundane side of getting into Harvard. While others you may not cheat as much, you are sure they could. Cost 2 AP
-[X] [SGI] Crown and Scepter, see to what extent your unique talents can be used in the Sanctuary. Can spend up to 6 SGI (x6AP)
-[X] [SGI] NEW Winter Teachings: Teach Summoning, dreamweaving, or other Paths unknown to Sanctuary's spiritbinders: Maeve's goodwill allows the teaching of magics unknown in Sanctuary. Her presence, in some way, will help smooth things out. Can spend up to 3 AP (x3 AP)
-[X] Cauldron Bubble, your new friends from Ordo Lebetis would need more help, maybe not as...enthusiastic as last time, but they are small fish in a very big and scary pond
--[X] Updated online presence [SGI], one of the few advantages lesser talents have over more powerful magicians is that they are more up to date with technology and are less likely to blow it up. See if you can convince others to establish a strong online presence, perhaps even recruiting
-[X] Contact the Librarians: Given that you are the sovereign of an interdenominational magical nation, it might be worth talking to a branch of the federal government that knows about magic, one that hasn't come forward trying to fit Harry right into your front
-[X] NEW Training... Wizards?: The White Council in their wisdom seems to have decided that Chicago is the ideal place to set up a training camp for young wizards to serve in the Watchers, you suspect in part because they reason the Red Court I wouldn't dare attack with you in the city. Carlos would like to meet with you, partly to coordinate things so you don't stumble upon wizard babies, but also you suspect just to get out
-[X] NEW Traitor, Enemy of All: Thanks to your Crown you know the names of the traitors on the White Council, the problem is how to explain this without revealing the game. Or maybe deal with them yourself
-[X] New Artifact Workshop: Creating a place of potential, a wild seed so close to the world of form is no easy thing, but once done, you are sure it will pay for itself in full (0/10 AP) ( 1AP +2AP)
-[X] [SGI] Updated Unknown Family, now that you know the complete story, your feelings towards your maternal grandparents are not at all complicated, but people change, right? And even if not, you have other family members further away in Boston who would be cool to meet.
-[X] [SGI] NEW Introductions to more of you: Twin jokes aside it's going to take a bit of time and care to get your family used to other yous and keep the secret

1 is not applicable, because we are the ones making them. 2 we haven't bought yet. 3 is an option, yes.

Arc 13 Interlude 2: The Practices of Power
The Practices of Power

1st of February 2007 A.D.

Thomas Raith was not unfamiliar with the notion of a youngster suddenly bequeathed with powers of what most mortal practitioners might politely call call a left handed path. Some had to be consoled, some hand to be counseled and some has to be constrained, for the sake of secrecy if nothing else. When Olivia Deol had walked into his office asking: "Why is there s giant maze of tunnels under the city filled mostly with monsters that eat the homeless and would anyone be upset it I just shot any of the ones that came at me?" he thought she'd be one of the latter.

"For your first point Chicago was built over a long time, the old sinking beneath the new, not to mention all the people with something to literally bury. For your second... depends. There aren't any rules against entrapment in Undertown is that's what you're worried about, but if you make a lot of enemies they are going to find each other before they all find you."

"And if they have to find Molly?" she challenged.

"They are still going to try to find you, or your family, or your friends." Thomas sighed. "Look, what can you do, lets start there."

"Give nightmares, summon a miniature blizzard that stabs people, shoot a sniper riffle, get lucky, go fast, take hits, teleport, see from afar and not be seen myself," she rattled off.

Holy shit, I am not cut out for this, Thomas thought. Or maybe that should be Holy Molly, he shoot away the thought, not as absurd a he may have wished to sleep easily.

"First Rule of Magic Fight Club..."

The girl rolled her eyes. "Nothing that lets people in on the big secret I know, Molly covered that already. We wouldn't want the regular people to know they have to protect themselves."

"Second Rule of Magic Fight Club then, if you can't hold the ground you might as well not bother," the vampire looked around his shelves, looking for a particular book, one they used to train young wizards of all things, a gift from Lara when he had started getting a bit too friendly with Harry, meant to show him just how wizards looked at vampires of the White Court.

It was the kind of book that was meant to be slammed on tables with a thump and a cloud of dust, but Thomas hadn't inhabited the office long enough for it to get much in the way of the latter yet.

"Don't bother clearing out more than you can hold, all a vacuum does is ring the dinner bell for something worse than you chased out..." he trailed off and crooked a finger as though only now thinking about it. "Actually you know what Harry told me he was training some young Warden candidates in Chicago. He's going to want to give them some hands on experience, or if not him the Council is, the whole point of this is to get them ready to fight in the war, who don't you go train with them, build connections."

"What?" The question came out flatly disbelieving.

"Some of my family like to imagine we are the apex predators, after all humans hunt every animal and vampires hunt humans, I'd call them Social Darwinists except I'm pretty sure most of them don't know who Darwin was. Humans shape the world, they carve canals and lades, build tunnels under the sea and cables of light across the world. We just happen to live in it. D'you know why that is?"

A shake of the head is his only answer. On the right track them.

"Because humans cooperate a lot better than any of us do and that goes for the White Council too. If you want to make a difference, make friends not bullet holes in tunnel walls. There's going to be more future wizard-power in that training camp than anywhere else on the continent."

"OK," she said, slowly, then with morre resolve. "I'll go talk to Mr Dresden." There was a new skip in her step as she turned.

After she'd gone Thomas left a message to the Wizard of Chicago. "Good news Harry, I found an oposition force for your baby Wardens."

OOC: For anyone wondering, no Harry has not been planning for an OpFor, but he is going to have one now.
