Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Outsider cultists and people they subvert, as well as other types of Law breakers are essentially a memetic infection in many ways. I don't want to allow it into our immediate presence if we have a choice. Essentially, I see your argument as one to over-complicate the situation when we don't need to. We don't need to gather intel in indirect way when we can go after the source directly. Letting subverted elements into the city is a risk that we just don't need to take, at all. We can go for the root now. Nothing is stopping us.
I dont agree.
That has never been how they work. We know this because Sandra Marling was in Chicago for at least a year beforehand, and we dont have a sudden outbreak of infectious Outsideritis.

Besides, some of this is groundwork.
Camp Kaboom canonically happened in spring 2007. We are still in winter. If the canon schedule holds true, the earliest they'll be here is in March. Ramirez is just here to help set the groundwork.

I somewhat agree on the amount of aggro we have pulled, but I think everyone is going to be focused on MIkaboshi at the moment, while he's down. Porter's new body is important, yes, but the exaltation is more so. Both it, and the paired abyssal are far more dangerous potentially. And I don't trust the amount of security it has. Not to mention, that getting back to Vegas for a moment would be good for the alliance we are building there.
Narratively, reinforcing the loyalties of the most powerful defender of our Chicago Dragon Nest seems like a no-brainer
Mechanically, I would like to apply whatever bonuses that Exalted Craft can provide to the body we are giving Porter, just in case it becomes relevant in the near future. Given the caliber of hostiles on Molly's character sheet, we might need it.

The Exaltation is simply a narrative issue.
We literally just discovered they exist in Vegas. The QM is not going to trigger that plot point immediately without any notice, just like we found out about Sandra in October and only got around to going after her in January.

And that assumes that there is anyone with the power to simply take an active Celestial Exaltation.
We dont have that power.
No, the deal is that they can't be allowed to be seen, with some "as long as everyone can plausibly pretend not to have seen them, incidents may slide". And Porter doesn't need to have craft for this. We are building him a body. At the very least this should be as intimate as a bespoke suit. At most, it's an equivalent of major transhuman surgery. In all cases I expect his continuous input to be required one way or another.
They were right there when Maeve came calling about Sandra Marling IIRC.
And I think we made the Christmas gifts right there in Last Station, which means that Porter is aware of them anyway.

And like you said, its like fitting for a suit.
The wearer isnt usually involved in the making of one. When we made splendors for Lily, we didnt require her presence.
I'm pretty sure we already have that.
We have a list of traitors.
We dont have a list of people who are loyal, but who have been whammied or nudged into doing stuff that betrays the Council. Or who are currently under control, or have deadman's switches in their heads.

Commander Anastacia Luccio, for example, was used to murder Senior Council member Aleron LaFortier in Turn Coat.
She didnt even remember that it happened or that she'd done it.

With the baby wizards around I'm more tempted than ever by absurd geomancy shenanigans.

Just imagine if we got ourselves a web of dragon nests and rather than starting with a manse we invested them with elementals of our own to redirect the power flows into useful patterns. Then we plop down an AoE splendor* at the center point and prod them to show off.

Reminder that the white council, while not made of normal WoD mages, is basically the collective of every non-technocracy tradition in one cooperative environment.

We don't have time for it now, but think about what would happen if you pulled the best/most synergistic cross tradition lore into one ritual casting group then set them up with functionally limitless energy and a hall pass from the universe against failure.

Fuck this fighting fair shit, I want our artillery to get us noise complaints from God. :V

* My preferred approach is to make it a 3 dot and take element form + form of the hearth + IA + Mystic fortification. For reference:

Invincible Assertion (3 pt. Root Element)
This Splendor defines a rigid certainty and imposes it upon existence.
When used in an Adornment, define a specific roll of (Attribute) + (Ability) and a specialty that
it falls under. When the user makes such a roll, she cannot botch and cannot fail regardless of the
difficulty. No matter what, she always generates at least one success. If this roll is opposed by
another character, Invincible Assertion instead adds two bonus successes.
When used in a Fascination, define a specific roll of (Attribute) + (Ability) and a specialty that it
falls under. Under circumstances defined by the Splendor, such rolls cannot fail in its presence,
and always generate at least one success. If such a roll is opposed, it adds two bonus successes.
This Element may be incorporated into a Splendor more than once.
Mystic Fortification (1 pt. Mystic Element)
One of the Splendor's snares or benefits is particularly wicked or potent. Modify one roll
associated with the Splendor by increasing or decreasing its difficulty by two, or modify one
value associated with activating or resisting its effects (such as the number of points of
Willpower that must be spent to shake off a Beautiful Lie) by two.
And an elemental alignment that usually gives minor control of the subject to flavor their work.

So they cannot fail, and in any case where you want to roll to count successes they'd roll at -2 difficulty on top of whatever tools they bring with them.

Not really. Their paradigms were at least partially normalized else rules like "no transforming others" would have caveats. Since we know that it is possible to do so and keep it reversible, Lea for example is perfectly capable, just not the way White Council wizards are doing it. And wizards in both DF and WoD are capable of achieving any imaginable effect. Question is only in mentality and training.

Lea is a fey, she isn't subject to the same rules. A wizard could do the same theoretically, but the necessary mental aspects of casting would hit them with magically enforced certainty of their own right to choose what other people's bodies are like.

The difference I was highlighting is that broadly wizards have to follow the rules and WoD mages practice imposing their own, which is only relevant in a few contest. The tradition aspect is in all the different ways to practice magic within the laws because the White Council is global and has no real human competition or central education system. If you're a wizard and haven't been taken in by other supernaturals then you're on the council.

So they're not necessarily limited to say drawing high level rituals from the Hermetics or what have you.

I am not saying not to give Porter a body. I am saying wait until the next turn. If nothing else, we should have the forge ready by then, and while that might not be needed, we have more time then.

In regards to the exaltation I heavily dislike the meta-argument when it goes against in-story reasoning. If nothing else, doing a follow up right now is good, because we have just finished Vegas, and the whole place is still in disarray. Now is the most dangerous time.

The exact terms of the deal were "Assistants trained in alchemy to halve all production times sworn to your service for a century and a day as long as you to not mistreat them or reveal their presence to others"

Suits need to be fitted. And this is a body, not just a suit. Lily's artifact is exactly that, an artifact, this is more personal.

Also, more comments on your vote - using SGI for the family investigation is way too reckless. Charity has been Michael's wife for a long time. The possiblity of there being traps, including Nemesis long term agents in the family or nearby are not zero. And it's wholly too damn full of plothooks not to engage with the full power and narrative focus.

1)To my understanding, the soul-train doesnt require the Forge. And we have no guarantee that the Forge will be ready next turn; Joe has to roll above average for that to happen.
Im timing this to guarantee that when we go deal with the Peabody affair next turn, Porter's train will be up and running.

We and our interests have come under attack twice in Chicago twice in the last six months; first the Will of Kakuri happened, then Broken Seeker showed up with his posse. And thats not counting when we had to shelter Cauldron because the Ants were out for them. Im a little more anxious about the defenses around our people and Nest than it seems.

2)Its a game, not a simulation. One played for fun.
It is reasonable to take into account the fact that the players are not machines, and a relentless, uninterrupted escalation cascade is not sustainable OOC.

Not unless you are playing one of the early Rihaku Quests on SB, where that was an explicit selling feature.
With a relatively quick end.

Like I said, Maeve walked in on them back in December. The QM can decide as appropriate

No, this is less personal than literally altering the nature of the Summer Lady Mantle's effects on its bearer.
Suits need to be fitted because tailors arent perfect enough to do that shit from memory.
Not so much the case with Molly.

=====
I dont agree.

The opposition does not have infinite resources any more than we do, and cannot just afford to spend them to set up traps that might not even be triggered, in a family that Charity hasnt contacted for two decades.
The whole point of doing this quickly is to do it before they decide its worth the investment.

Furthermore?
There's enough player dissension that there's a good chance you will not get a full Molly AP to further engage with that subject unless an SGI clone suggests there's something worth pursuing there. Certainly not in the next two to three turns.

Arc 13 Interlude 1: Uncommon Courtesies
Uncommon Courtesies

1st of February 2007 A.D.

"No sign of anything getting over the threshold and enchanting Mr Reynolds," the girl, only a few months past sixteen looked over the nervous SI officer, she could tell he wasn't comfortable calling 'a kid' to a crime scene. Honestly of all the crimes modern English had committed, and there were many of them, having the same word for immature human and immature goat was probably the one that annoyed her the most. She wondered is the man would be more comfortable if she informed him that she'd seen Hell with her own two eyes. Likely not.

"Thanks you for your time Miss Rhys," Lieutenant Murphy on the other hand seemed entirely at ease mentally checking off the case, but then given that she was shorter even than Lydia and yet moved with the easy grace of an Akido master she'd probably been underestimated herself plenty of times. "I won't say I'm happy to hear the 'demons' aren't real, a man is still dead, but at least we can reassure the family his wife was very convinced he was seeing something that was really there. Said she had 'a bad a feeling'..."

"Oh, his wife was the one who killed him," Lydia instantly regretted blurting it out like that when Detective Stallings came up from his Mountain Dew so fast he spilled it all over his nice shirt.

"Probably should have lead with that. he's still in there, shocked of course, but he knows he's dead and he knows she did it since she er... confessed, not to him obviously, she can't see ghosts, but to his portrait, taunting him I guess that she got away with it and was going to claim the life insurance. Is Mrs Reynolds related to the chief of police somehow?"

"She's his niece," the Lieutenant said, looking around the sitting room with utter concentration, as though expecting to see spirits by sheet force of will.

"Right, he thinks that you were called as part of a personal favor to bury the lead," Lydia continued.

"Which lead?" The detective pressed. Now he was the target of the glare and unlike the veil between worlds he did wilt.

"Poisoning, Angel Trumpet leaves, he figured out how to get into her dreams, that is pretty easy for new ghosts to do when their demesne is still closer to living dream than haunting, and saw her do it." Lydia paused thinking deeply. "Do you want to just interview him yourselves? if you just pull the blinds I can light up the room and..."

"We are taking testimony from stiffs now?" Detective Stallings sounded dismissive, like this was some kind of dog and pony show at the local carnival.

"Do not disrespect the Dead!" From one moment to the next Lydia's manner shifted, still as a statue lips barely moving. Yet from those lips came words came endowed with bone-shaking weight, all the more dreadful for the fact she had not raised her voice. When silence came it did so grudgingly, the last few syllables echoing as though in a far grander hall of stone. In a slightly more ordinary though still cutting voice the daughter of Arwan added. "The passage is not smooth or easy and there is no stumbling block more common or more insidious than the denial of their humanity, hearing the quick speak of them they are meat in the ground instead of a soul imperishable."

Lieutenant Murphy came to first. "I apologize for my colleague's hurtful words," she declared to the room at large.

"Do you still want to..." Lydia started.

At the answering nod and closed blinds the room glowed silver bright and shimmering.

OOC: Lydia has been taking some time to work with SI when she can since she saw the kind of trouble they could get into. On the plus side that means they now have the Exigent of Death on the list of contacts and she is a lot freer with information than Harry. On the other side though occasionally someone will say something stupid and get a glimpse of just what an Exigent of Death is.

There's another idea for a new TV program our production company can make. Hmm, Lydia Rhys...so maybe the MC could be Linda Reese?

Assuming the Ghost Whisperer show isn't already a thing in DF, of course. And if it isn't, we could steal the name, too.

Loved the interlude, @DragonParadox. It's a shame Susan isn't still writing for the Midwest Arcane. Stories of the ghost detective would probably sell some papers

[X]Plan Homebase Homebrewing
-[X] Molly
--[X] A Big Score, your Crown isn't really made for picking out random numbers in a mundane draw, but it is still your power so you can push it that one time to win a lottery... any lottery. You will have to find the balance between payout and anonymity and some place to park the money but that seems reasonably doable with some help from mom and dad, and unlike some of your other plans they are unlikely to object to this form of cheating at gambling 1AP
--[X] A friend in need. You promised Rosie that you would help and so you will, with problems material and ethereal
---[X] Dreaming True, Rosie is doing great so far, but she still needs more training before she can get a proper hold of her powers (0/15 progress)
---[X] Moving out, you are of age now and you certainly do not lack for funds, the sooner you get Rosie out of that house the better 2 AP
--[X] Tools Redeemed: Thinking back on that paraphernalia you looted from the Fomori tantalizing insights come to mind... and more immediately relevant it will mean you can finally stop mooching of Harry's equipment. (Gain Alchemy Laboratory Halved XP price for reaching Alchemy 4) 1 AP
--[X] The Other side of the Mirror: Explore and secure Nevernever areas corresponding to the Last station 1AP
--[X] New Artifact Workshop: Crafting a place of potential, a wild seed so near to the world of form is no easy thing, but once it's done you are sure it will pay for itself in full (0/10 AP) 3 AP

---[X] [SGI] Higher Education: Boston is even freer of supernatural claimants than when you found it, but you have done little to engage with the mundane side of getting into Harvard. While other you may not cheat quite as hard you're sure they could manage. Cost 2 AP
---[X] [SGI] Teachings of Winter: Teach Summoning, dream-weaving or other unknown Paths to the spirit binders of Sanctuary: Maeve's good will allows for the teaching of magics unknown to Sanctuary. Your presence, in some manner will help smooth matters Can spend up to 3 AP
--[X] SGI-2 Diplomat
---[X] Cauldron Bubble, your new friends in the Ordo Lebetis could use more help, maybe not as... enthusiastic as the last time, but they are small fish in a very big and scary pond
---[X] [SGI] Online presence, one of the few advantages of minor talents over more powerful magicians is that they are more up to date with technology and less likely to make it explode. See if you can convince the others to set up a strong online presence, maybe even recruiting Cost 4 AP
---[X] [SGI] Look into the Minor Talents of Chicago, so far you have been isolated from the supernatural scene of Chicago, now that you can get in touch with them without necessarily having your dad with you all the time the time has come to change that... though given how both Mouse and McCoy thought you were bad news at first maybe you should bring dad or Harry along to some of them just as an introduction
----[X] Alphas, friends of Harry, close to you in age and they work to keep monsters off the street near the University, they sounds really cool costs 1 AP

@DragonParadox should I get rid of the numbers of potions or procedures or condense them down some? I'm using essentially The Craft Time of one week per AP with a little leeway for the level 2 procedures that can be made I guess by the hour Due to the vagaries of sorcerer revised I'd also completely forgotten that the Alchemy elves were a thing.

Quick question how many doses or packages or pills or whatever measurements of Alchemical product do we make in one Brewing session with Dresden's equipment? If that doesn't need to be known that's fine.

All the more so as Lydia would react to Susan by just inviting her to tea with the dead while explaining supernatural politics to her. Lydia like her father does not have Harry's hang-ups about mortals. Wanna he a hero? Wanna he a scholar of the mystical? Sure on your head be it, as it has ever been.

It does depend on successes and you can of course make less, but with middling rolls up to 24 doses per session.

And then the Fire Nation attacked...

Long experience of playing RPG games taught me that downtime arcs exist solely for the purpose of DM lining up a sucker punch or something even worse story wise. I'm still all for it.
While I also have this thought, I think this will only happen if the event dice goes crazy, as DP also lamented several times how big the Vegas and Boston arc had become. Long arcs are not only tiring for the players but also for the GM himself.

[X]PLAN SECURITY HOME AND ABROAD

That said, I won't be mad if uju ends up winning. I prefer this one because I agree with Yog that we should check in on Exaltation and burn out Outsider infections.

hmm, another random thought, in Dreseden verse, the White council tries to spread certain rituals since the more people that do them the weaker they get since the being answering the ritual only has so much power and patience to spare. Does this principal still apply to the few (ignoring the atemporal nonsense that is the broken winged crane) Exalted rituals that have survived the intervening years?

Ehhhh. If it doesn't draw from a deity it generally doesn't have a limited power source. I think it's so dependent on the specific ritual it's impossible to make a general statement.

The only things Molly knows of that fall into that category are Ancient Sorcery. The two spells she knows are:
  • Sapphire Ritual of Exorcism i.e. Exorcise Everything in that general direction, willing unwilling and everything between
  • Summon the Calibration Gate i.e. Gate that can go everywhere and Elsewhere and Nowhere
Of these two the former is terrifyingly powerful, but not that exploitable, the latter can open a hole into the Outside. Even if she could pull the White Council's trick Molly would not try.

That said she probably cannot, these things feel like bits of old source code underpinning everything, like if you pulled them out π might suddenly become 4. Moreover it does not feel like something that can run out of energy since you have to put energy in. Sapphire Ritual of Exorcism costs 5 Essence, a third of Molly's whole tank and what would be more than half of Lydia's. These rites are not a way to access some distant power, they are a way to shape your power into a key that fits the universe.
