[X] Shenglu

The meanings in Yun Cai are nice but this is going to be our city, the Ling capital. I don't really want to name it after our patron. Also, Cai is just Ren Rens last name. It doesn't really seem like something we could tease her with or that she would even be particularly surprised by because (1) when people think Cai they're going to think of the family. i.e if a town were named Yun Meng people would think of the Meng clan not of Meng Dan and (2) it's the most normal and boring thing in the world to name a frontier town after it's patron. For example, American states like Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia were named after the royalty that funded it.

Which is... fine I guess. Just kind of boring and takes us, as the Ling, out of the picture in a way a name that's more about the town itself doesn't. I don't want people to come to our capital and be like- oh yeah... The town funded by the Cai. I want them to come and say- oh! The heart of the Ling clan!

It's a different Cai character afaik. Different tone. There would be "Lucky Cai" puns by mixing up tones but other than that I feel like this is really not that big an issue.

I like the idea of giving Renren a perfectly literal poetic name like 'Prismatic Cloud' that is just descriptive, but also puns to 'Lucky Cai'. It's a tribute to her, after all.

I'm gonna switch from Yun Cai to Shenglu. It seems like both have plenty of positive wordplay to make LQ happy without stepping on CRX's toes too much, and both are plenty aspirational for GG, but Shenglu does a better job of referencing the geographical features for XL, it gets both the mists and Snowblossom, which is good. I also think CRX would prefer Shenglu over Yun Cai if she was picking.

I still like Yun Cai, but if it's a two horse race I think it loses to Shenglu.

[x] Xianghe

That'd be 祥合, which I mentioned earlier.

祥 meaning "auspicious" or "good omen".
合 meaning "to gather", "assemble", "unite", "bring together".

It's not super punny, but has the same pronunciation as 祥和, meaning roughly "auspicious and harmonious" or "auspicious and peaceful", as well as 祥河 "auspicious river".

I think it's quite aspirational. We're trying to build a community, including not just the human settlers, but eventually also the local spirits, like the beavers, the Moose, and the qilin herd, getting everyone to coexist peacefully. In the long term, perhaps that might even be extended to the Cloud nomads and the Ith, after the ongoing conflicts are resolved? It's what I'd like to see anyway, a place where many diverse peoples can come together and get along.

I cannot get behind Shenglu, because I read it as shen/glu, and that's too weird and goofy. Throws me every time I read it.
I'm telling you this so you all must suffer alongside me.

[X] Yun Cai

the main problem with that one is that xianghe is a pretty big real place in hebei (though it uses different characters: 香河), so it might be jarring to anyone familiar with that real place

that's just a lack of experience with pinyin, since 'glu' isn't a viable syllable in chinese, the syllable structure is CV(V)(V) pretty consistently
