Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

[X] Use your record of the calls with Sandra's minions as a focus to find her current location, then start tracking her down. If need be, use further foci to get her.

The continent is at stake, really not the time to wait.

When we asked when Sandra intended to do her thing, there was a good chance she hadn't learnt of the death of her Blampire minion. She had ample opportunities to do so since, and that is bound to have her change her plans.

Don't want to gamble on that.

He clearly was connected to her in some way, I doubt she didn't know he was there.
That's at best speculative. We know that in his mortal days he was the one who discovered the exaltation-keeping statue. Keeping an eye on it makes sense. And there are signs of impending apocalypse that supernaturals are picking up. So, he could well have come to the city completely independently from Sandra, simply alerted by prophecies and portents to the opportunity.

He was also clearly serving his own Sire, who kept a close enough eye on him to try and steal his soul back the moment it left the body.

I doubt that an ancient Blampire is working directly with a mortal outsider-cultist.

They are probably just interested in similar things in the same city.

Note that [Stay on the phones] + [Call Arlene] are both part of the same (winning)vote.

1-dot alchemic recipe (that's 1 XP, I think?) to ignore one level of wounds + buy alchemy 3 and

And make Lash a fascination with the Blessing of Health (I'll have to see what the best version for her would be).

Also, spend some time in our kingdom being studied by our medicae.

Also, modifying my vote - adding calling Arlene. That's a good idea.

[X] Go out
-[X] Talk to Silk at the Xanadu
--[X] Have someone carry you in a bleach bottle for the travel duration
[X]Call Arlene and give her a rundown and warning on Jacob, and a request to do what she can
The alchemy stuff doesn't do Agg. The splendor would, but it's kinda inefficient. We don't really need more lethal/bashing personal healing because EIPP already covers that pretty well.

Also, we're lucky that our circle is either old or out of touch because the bottled infernal bit is just begging for a Pokémon joke.

Nothing we've heard from the last few people we've talked to has told us anything particularly useful beyond simply having names and foci to work with.

Those are something, but at some point we need to translate this into actionable specifics and do something about them.

Wether that's hunting her personally, cursing her cult interns, or casting summon feds by telling them where Sandra is and how she's a terrorist who's going to destroy the continent's biosphere in the name of the most illegal of aliens, whatever.
There are good plans and bad plans, but perfect later will probably end worse than messy now.

… well Daedalus would find a way to screw this up somehow, but the general point holds.
Thats not actually true.

=
Talking to Jacob confirmed to us that Sandra had organic mindwhammy capabilities, as thats on the scale of what you need to make a fine thrall. Previously all we knew was that she could subvert a magical ritual machine.
Thats given us a fuller picture of her capabilities thus far.

===
Talking to Kate House told us many, many things:
1)That Sandra is self-funding by murdering rich people and enthralling their kids to loot their estate.
If you missed it, Jacob's parents conveniently died in October, then Jacob started giving Sandra money.

That means she doesnt have the financial backing of a greater conspiracy behind her unlike others we've seen.
Kattrin sure as fuck didnt have to murder mortals to fund her attempt on Arawn in Chicago, and neither did Eiko's akuma. The the Red Court could afford to spend money like water to back Madrigal's plot.

Sandra is out here on shoestrings.
If she doesnt have anyone throwing a couple million spending money her way for mundane shit, she doesnt have anyone providing her backup soldiers besides any she has stolen, suborned or summoned.

Which means if we get in a magical fight, we're looking at the mindcontrolled or summons.

=
2)Identified the primary street pharmacist of this conspiracy.
Told us where his primary street lab is supposed to be on campus, and even warned us of the defensive measures around it.
He didnt pick a place with a reputation for being haunted for nothing.

=
3)Redflagged the other 3 members of Sandra's inner circle as having received much more extensive mods
When the social butterfly describes the alleged drug dealer who runs a drug lab on campus as a lovable scamp who might not be entirely cut out for academics, but the other threes are outright called weirdoes?
You know there's something seriously wrong with them.

Im still trying to figure why Sandra warned Kate House so comprehensively about the Whampires(beautiful people) and Rampires(protect your drink in these places) in the city.
===
When we scheduled our appointment with Harrowmont we committed to healing up fully. None of the information we've gained seems to indicate that things are dire enough that we need to move now. We have 34 hours to derail Sandra's plan spending 2 of them to heal is the wiser choice. Otherwise we're one point of damage from regaining the penalty we spent several hours healing away.

I generally agree that we're probably not going to get much more information out of the students, but unless we want to try and deal with Silk over the phone it still the best use of our times while we're healing.

[x] uju32
^^^
The reason we're healing here, in Las Vegas, instead of going back to Sanctuary boils down to it allowing us to keep an eye on things while doing so. We have a reliable timeline we're working on, and there's been no indication that its changed.

Seriously though, 34 hours was it till the continent is turned into a desert and tentacle Tim shows the whole city that trick he learned with his suckers last eon.

I feel bad for Sandra's victims, but is now the time to be arranging for their long term care or walking down aimless call lists? Especially since they clue Sandra in to exactly what we're doing supposing she picks up on the weird calls to her people.
Could we at least get some backup going or try to do something to delay her?
We have no immediate urgency to run out on the streets that override the imperative to heal up completely first.
And if we have to heal first, we can also make phone calls.

It literally costs Molly nothing to pick up the phone and ask Arlene to check in on the dude, get him out and undo his mindwhammy. And once he is in Arlene's hands, he might tell her stuff that we might want to know. Or she might find stuff in his home that we might want to know. Its IC for the person we're playing.

And these types of sidequests have an impact on our final XP rating.

Sandra already knows that Molly is in town, and that she brought an infamous magical investigator with her(seriously, Dresden has a Reputation for that shit).
She already knew she was on a clock when she saw us on the Strip. None of this shit is news to her.

1-dot alchemic recipe (that's 1 XP, I think?) to ignore one level of wounds + buy alchemy 3 and
Regeneration potions, which will heal Agg, are either Alchemy 3 or Alchemy 4.
Lore of Awakening 3 will also allow Lash to heal Aggravated damage, assuming she's allowed to buy into that Lore.

If we have to fight something that is seriously threatening, we still have our Shintai.
If we hunt down Sandra now, the odds are lower that we will have to fight the Sin-Eater, the Dragon or a now-unbound Outsider after the Sin-Eater is dead.
We've used shintai once in this story already against Iku-Turso.
DC for activating shintai next time has gone up. And Im not betting on only having to use it once.

We are already super able to heal lethal damage. It this was just lethal damage it would have been gone a long time ago.
It's why I put that vote for full attack. I really did not expect agg damage from a black vampire and a stone statue. Agg damage is supposed to be rare.
In WoD, Vampire claws and fangs deal Agg.
So do werewolf fangs and claws. Mages do aggravated with a bunch of damage types, from fire to acid and more exotic shit (Ramirez's entropy shield does Agg, for example). Some fomori powers can deal Agg damage.

Mortals throwing molotovs and using flamethrowers do Agg.
So do Dragon's Breath rounds and explosive/incendiary bullets. So does acid. And radiation.
Dismemberment usually counts as Agg as well.

He clearly was connected to her in some way, I doubt she didn't know he was there.
Her knowing he was there doesnt mean he works for her, or that he shares all his information with her.
Or that she always knows where he is or what he is doing.

Cobbler rolls in styling a couple weeks ago, throwing around resources and weight, making splashy deals with Charon and committing high profile murders of significant Whampires. Meantime, Sandra comes in quietly last year, registers as an undergrad, murders humans to steal their money and covertly suborns the Shadowkillers.

Their M.O is too different to be part of the same plan.

They probably knew of each other; the Strip ambush on us when we were leaving the Venetian suggests that Cobbler sent her notice of Molly being in town after our meeting at the canals, allowing her to preposition assassins.
But they werent in the same conspiracy.

The alchemy stuff doesn't do Agg. The splendor would, but it's kinda inefficient. We don't really need more lethal/bashing personal healing because EIPP already covers that pretty well.

I think it does.
Alchemy 3-4 IIRC, but I would have to dig up my books to check.
And of course potions take time to brew, the higher level the more time it takes.

Please, permit me to remind you of this 1990s classic, when Dresden was still a teen:

Thats given us a fuller picture of her capabilities thus far.
We knew she had 20+ people who were good enough thralls to crawl out of the woodwork to hunt us without being obvious to anyone who cared about what happened to them. It doesn't matter precisely how she did it at this stage, only the impact on the situation.

Which means if we get in a magical fight, we're looking at the mindcontrolled or summons.
Which we already suspected we'd face from the outsider cultist we know was using mind control. Her funding is of interest, but only in the aftermath since we have no particular reason to believe that we can cut it off or that it would hinder her in the immediate sense if we did.

2)Identified the primary street pharmacist of this conspiracy.
Told us where his primary street lab is supposed to be on campus, and even warned us of the defensive measures around it.
He didnt pick a place with a reputation for being haunted for nothing.

Think she's getting high in his basement? What she did here and how does matter, but right now I don't give a good god damn about any of them or this and neither should you.

Sandra is about to basically set off a nuke in the city with continent wide fallout. The criteria here are therefore very simple; does it help us get to her or break her machinery right now. Some of these would, but we have the crown so we've been two foci from learning everything we need to know before the current situation is resolved.

3)Redflagged the other 3 members of Sandra's inner circle as having received much more extensive mods

All of these people could drop dead right now and it'd be awful, but ultimately not be particularly relevant to solving this problem before it goes off and kills everyone else too. The people Sandra hurt deserve help, but right now is not the time to do it.

Right now we're spending our margin for error, what are we getting that contributes specifically to our actual problem and can't be done faster with a different tool?
We have no immediate urgency to run out on the streets that override the imperative to heal up completely first.
And if we have to heal first, we can also make phone calls.
If those two health boxes were going to be a fatal difference then our margin is way too narrow to screw with this stuff right now. Send demons, hire mercenaries, write a letter to our senator, something that deals with the immediate stretch of road we're on and not ten miles past the brick wall we're speeding towards.

Arc 11 Post 71: Venom for a New Age
Venom for a New Age

13th of January 2007 A.D.

The charity of Ishtar is not something you can easily guess at, but recalling Arlene throwing herself at Tommy maybe she will help Jacob, it's not like the poor guy has anything left to lose. She picks up instantly, worry plain to hear in her words: "What? What's happened?"It takes a few minutes to take her from a siege mentality to thinking about long term assets, the Hanging Gardens is closed until the end of next week as Arlene pulls her people back from operating in the wake of Vegas seeming to go from cold war into hot, but in the end she agrees to look into it and that is the best you can hope for.

You get back to your phone and decide to start with Frankie.

"Who's this?" the voice on the other end is sharp, anger and suspicion mixing dangerously under the surface. She is not going to be buying your grant giver persona or even if she does she's not going to give a hoot.

So you are now Margret Richmond, owner of an up coming biotech company Green Star Pharmaceuticals, interested in recruiting graduates in the field, Frankie a senior reciprocates at least enough not to shut you down, though he seems to find the conversation more funny than intriguing, making time by asking about all sorts of perks and benefits culminating with 'so the company's going to cover my legal fees if it comes to it right, seeing as I'd be such a valued employee'. You can just imagine him as the wiseass who got his kicks in high school by winding up teachers then making detention seem cool.

That is not to say you do not get anything useful out of him, apparently his favorite course is organic chemistry and also he has opinions, rather strong ones: "People like to say we're made of star-dust, but really we are more like sludge, a human is more like pond scum than diamonds, the diamonds are pure carbon but we have all those tangled up molecules rubbing up against each other, burning breaking, gobbling up more stuff just to keep ourselves going a little further. Really that's what pills are too isn't it, very specialized sludge so we can keep on trucking just that little bit longer before we collapse in on ourselves and they pump us full of poisons and they prop us in a box for everyone to see. It's lies and fake pictures all the way down. Tell me is the money worth it? Does it make you feel better to have them and count them when all you are doing is selling bespoke sludge, making time until you are rotten meat seasoned with chemicals in a sealed box?"

A convert not a puppet, you realize, and a thousand times more dangerous for it. To Frankie Lewis the human condition is a bad joke and all that's left to man is to make one of his own to improve upon it.

Restored 1 Essence -> Now at 15/15 (CSR)

"Ah, I see you have been putting those philosophy courses to good use," you put in in a slightly sardonic tone sure to needle him into continuing.

"So where are you phoning from, one of those fancy spa resorts where they promise to open your chakras unburden your soul? You are not in Vegas are you?"

"No." He seems to be expecting some response so you give it to him.

"Well then keep your eyes on the old TV," he stretches it out to 'tee vee'. "It's about to get real, really really real." The line goes dead.

What did he mean? you, look near and far through eyes of flame. Reliable as ever the answer comes and it turns your blood to ice:

He speaks of an attack with Verminous Agent X aimed at the Club Xanadu this morning

Images of panicked men and women rushing into the street, falling over each other buffet your mind.... Sirens blaring, a news helicopter overhead... a maddened shape misshapen and rubbery, all too hideously real, a dying vampire of the Red Court ripping its way though emergency personnel, trying to guzzle down blood from torn necks then collapsing in the sun to burn
. The sun, higher in the sky than it it now, but not by much, thirty, forty minutes maybe.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 14/15 (Crown Question)
Healed 1 Wound -> Now at 14/15

What do you do?

We should get moving asap but that does not mean we should not also make the call so that they are forewarned.

He sure rolled well for his shitty WP.
Guess he isn't that far along with his whole dark enlightenment bullshit, or the WP would reflect it.

[X] Phone Silk to evacuate the club right now
-[X] You can't let these distractions make you loose sight of the real threat. Track down Sandra right now, using available Crown-foci to find her current location, if need be her new location after she moved on.

We knew she had 20+ people who were good enough thralls to crawl out of the woodwork to hunt us without being obvious to anyone who cared about what happened to them. It doesn't matter precisely how she did it at this stage, only the impact on the situation.
How she did it and what she did has bearing on whether it could be undone in combat time, as well as what we can expect to see.

If we're being hunted by enthralled mafiosi who think they have legit orders from their bosses?
It means that we dont have to worry about them being backed up by mistwraiths or cornerhounds or lesser Walkers, because that will spook them.

If we're being hunted by Renfield-type rough thralls?
All options mundane and supernatural are on the table, as are high-collateral mundane maneuvers that most fine thralls wont normally countenance. Like suicide vests.

Thats the kind of thing you might want to know beforehand before entering melee range of an opponent.

Which we already suspected we'd face from the outsider cultist we know was using mind control. Her funding is of interest, but only in the aftermath since we have no particular reason to believe that we can cut it off or that it would hinder her in the immediate since if we did.
Suspected. Didnt know.
If anything, Molly's personal experience with her in Chicago pointed at her not having mind-control, at least not as of last year. What we've seen thus far of her work could just as easily have been done by a summon.

Positive confirmation of the ability in her personally is a valuable piece of the puzzle.

You're missing my point.
If she doesnt have people willing to give her untraceable money to work with, she doesnt have people willing to lend her soldiers and operatives that might be linked to this affair. Which helps define the parameters of the threat profile we face.

Think she's getting high in his basement? What she did here and how does matter, but right now I don't give a good god damn about any of them or this and neither should you.

Some of these would, but we have the crown so we've been two foci from learning everything we need to know before the current situation is resolved.
Her choosing to have this stuff produced on the UNLV campus means that where its supposed to be deployed has to be in relatively close proximity to the production site to minimize transportation issues.
Else they would have done it out in the boonies where there's no cops, like most reasonable street pharmacists.

Sandra has been here for at least three months that we can confirm. AND she's a true believer.
There are quite possibly contingency options in the event that her primary plan fails; a failure to pop the seal on the gate might fallback into attempting to stage a major Masquerade breach on TV with major civilian casualties.

Kinda like Splattercon, but much bigger.

Its not an either/or.
It costs us nothing to do both, and the doing might turn up further information to further define our problem.
Our Crown thrives on more data.

If those two health boxes were going to be a fatal difference then our margin is way too narrow to screw with this stuff right now. Send demons, hire mercenaries, write a letter to our senator, something that deals with the immediate stretch of road we're on and not ten miles past the brick wall we're speeding towards.
We're fighting a woman with several months of preptime, and the spectrum of options available are significant.
Full success requires not just stopping the Masquerade breach, but minimizing any loss of civilian lives.

Its cold comfort to stop the Hellgate breach but have one of her core crew activate a contingency that, say, deploys a hallucinogenic that causes a reenactment of the Kingsmen church scene on national TV, with supernaturals joining in.
Especially with Molly being so linked to events here.

We actually want a clean sweep.

Sure, you have two foci in Sandra.
QUESTION
1)Is Club Xanadu on the Strip in this AU?
2)How far is it from UNLV to the club? In travel time or distance?
3)How long for the party to drive to Club Xanadu?
4)Do the cyberdevils have a map of the Las Vegas sewer and water systems? Can Molly navigate herself there with RVD?
I assume so, but would like to confirm.

  1. Yes
  2. About 10 minutes drive
  3. They do not have one, but they could try to get one, it will take 5-10 minutes. Molly could just try to navigate blind but she would have to roll survival to see how long she takes to get through

[X] Plan Trachops cirrhosus
-[X] Alert others
-[X] Have Clippy pull up Frankie Lewis's records to use as a focus to learn the ingress route for the attack
-[X] Phone Silk
--[X] Subterfuge and/or Leadership excellency, Empathy excellency
--[X] start discrete evacuation
--[X] plan an ambush for the attackers with forces available
--[X] Ask for discrete approach routes, so you aren't observed by the attackers' lookouts
-[X] Go there with the others, you need to stop the attackers, otherwise you will have Old One cultists with bloody nerve agents loose in Vegas and no idea where they will go next
--[X] Call the Library of Congress to alert them about a masquerade breaching planned attack, and so they start preemptive cover-up

Something like this. LoC is only partially OOC-motivated - we want media protection and even half an hour of prep helps a lot.
