Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

It seems like it would be easier for us to talk to Daniel and Lydia at the same time. Their issues are related and they are together.

When we manifest our kingdom around us does that mean that when things die around us are subject to the wheel?

No, a bunch of vampires died in the aura and did not come under the influence of the wheel.... which is probably for the best given that one of them was Arianna herself.
The ability to impose conceptual rules of our kingdom upon reality seems like a good suggestion for Eschaton Shintai as a second signature. Maybe throw in the ability to make material changes permanent too.

On the subject of Porter, do you guys think he knows any other wyrms?

Once we negotiate his fealty and get a rough idea of what they like as a whole it might be worth our time to hire as many of the local elemental spirits as we can get to sign on.

Having the loyalty of a noticeable portion of the local geomantic environment sounds like the sort of thing that lets you pull real bullshit in a region.

Maybe we could do it as build up to a city god.

Instead of shooting straight for the top we start by taking over the local geomantic landscape then bulk out the bureaucracy with minor gods of various levels and natures that bridge the gap between unshaped nature and the man made environment. Cap it off with the god of Chicago, resulting in a structure with greater depth in the region than the city god alone*.

We'd just need to be careful not to treat our terrestrial bureaucracy like the primordials treated their godly servants. :V

* Perhaps just as critically, a spirit that big will almost certainly make a court for itself anyway. If we effectively do that first and have their primary loyalty beforehand it makes it less likely to do anything too spicy later.

I don't want to go full paranoid self fulfilling prophecy here, but we should take care to ensure we stay the boss of any powerful spirits we unleash on heavily populated areas.

If it wakes up and chooses to lean into organized crime or decides it wants to be a sovereign city state there'd be serious consequences for other, squishier, people.

Is that tied, or just a very messy plan vote?

Our kingdom could handle her especially since we could use Lord of the land to make her appear at a time and place of our choosing without any blood points. Better we get her soul then some other hell.

Of course the best would be if we can be selective.

Edit: Thinking about it more we likely wouldn't be able take anyone who the Angels of Death are protecting so we don't get our family members for example. After all she did say that she would protect father Forthills soul against all the forces of hell. But the angels of death wouldn't be necessary if souls couldn't be redirected.

Of Principles and Power

As soon as you walk though the door mom catches you in a hug so tight it is like she is trying to make sure you are solid though stress-testing, not even any grilling for the first ten minutes just a plate of cheesecake shoved into your hands. Maybe she had been worried you'd been going hungry in addition to all the other stuff.

This time you leave the vampire head in the bag, offering the bare bones of the story before calling Daniel and the jawas down. There is a name for a band, you think with a smile as Mathew and Leech tromp down the stairs in near musical step so they can all see you are OK. Maybe it's cowardly of you, but you do not feel like having a play by play analyses of that time you allied with a monster against an arguably worse monster and let the latter fly off into the sunrise. Honestly you are just happy to be back, talk about church bakesales, volleyball matches and summer camp. It is just a normal night, alas a school night and so you grind yourself for that the morrow brings.

People always say they hate Mondays and you get that, but at least Mondays have some integrity about torturing you, Thursdays on the other hand those are sneaky about it, it's almost Friday which is almost Saturday, gets you daydreaming about what you are going to do with the mornings when you do not have to listen to canned opinions of musty books and then suddenly Mrs Cooper is is putting you on the spot to share your thoughts on Jack in Lord of the Flies...

"I think William Golding didn't like kids very much," you scramble for an answer and get a laugh. "He liked to imagine that all the ills of society could be found in the mind of the young because it comforted him. After all in his classroom he was the man in the uniform, he could tell all the little Jacks he saw to pipe down and listen. Why if only the rest of society would become properly civilized they would not have any more Jacks, anymore dictators and tyrants . I don't think it works that way, it isn't just the usurpers and the demagogues, a society, a world designed around paying heed to authority will naturally devolve into tyranny be that highest seat ever so high. enlightened tyranny isn't."

The room had gone dead still, every eye upon you. Come on I did not even do anything magical that time! you grouse inwardly.

"That is certainly a unique perspective Ms Carpenter, but we are here to read the book not the author," your teacher manages to gather her own scattered thoughts.

You nod politely, not mentioning how two pages ago in your notes she had talked about Golding's experience as a teacher and how that had informed his writings. The words 'set two groups of students to fight each other' are circled in red back there. No abuse of power there, no siree just the base nature of man shinning though.

Speaking of teenage boys, power and the lengths to which they might go to get it... Daniel. You had a talk with Lydia, not a very long one and the two of you had made arrangements for a night out to talk about 'Brass Bells and Howling winds', which is apparently how your first entrance into Sanctuary had sounded to her all the way at that Barrowwills, but mostly you had talked about what your brother wants.

He wants power, to matter, to make a better world, to be strong enough to help and not have to stay behind A familiar refrain if ever you had heard one. Indeed not so long ago you had been the one humming it. And look at me now I have it all. Is it any wonder he thinks he can get it too, or something like it...

How do you approach Daniel?

OOC: How much of Molly's reaction to Golding's work and philosophy and how much is the Exaltation I will leave up to the imagination, but I will say that all parts of her agree in detesting the notion that external coercion is needed to control man's base nature.

Well this is a very interesting position for a Catholic infernal and technical god empress to take.

Think Molly would make the will save to keep a straight face if Usum quoted this back to her while she's a church*? Maybe during one of those hymns that include the line "king of kings and lord of lords"? :V

*This isn't quite fair to the white god, but there's enough material for a determined devil to be a little shit about it.

Shame just one more successes and we might have started the beginning of sort of political movement.
It's still legendary.

We weren't trying to start a political movement so it probably wouldn't have gotten one either way, but I suspect Molly's little spiel there will come to mind any time these guys encounter something reminding them of the book.

Stuff like this makes me tempted to spam excellencies for really petty gags.

Just imagine a 10+ success cooking video on the proper way to make a turkey club, or basic car repair done with the most intimidating possible dialog. 100% mundane information that just happens to sound exactly like a coded message containing orders for hitmen or similar.

Maybe a video on etiquette across the world where Molly seamlessly shifts mannerisms with the topic.

It's a waste of time, but so funny I'm tempted by it anyway.

The White God in this universe may or may not have ultimate power, but he does not exert ultimate authority over mankind, that is what the whole Free Will thing is about. Usum knows the counter would be instant and hard to argue against. He is saving his breath for greyer areas :V

He's a brave boy and I'm sure he could be something capable in a few years, but he can't ever fight the foes his family is making.
Not with Sorcery, Formor-powers and powerarmor together could he have left that plane alive, at least not without Molly taking considerable action to protect him, and risk her own fight and all the other servants in the plane.

I am mostly asking him to take a tour of our world because it's both safe and helpful.

[X] Make Daniel an Offer He Shouldn't Refuse
-[X] Christmas vacation is coming up soon and he'll have two weeks off from school. Some of that will need to be spent with the family and Lydia, of course, but we can arrange for him to visit our realm for 9 or 10 days (assuming our parents consent). While there, he'll be trained (i.e. worked into the ground) in FCF combat, weaponry, technology, etc., and sorcery if he proves capable.
-[X] This is only an introduction, however, a chance for him to get his feet wet and an opportunity no one else from Earth has benefited from so far. If he does well and impresses his instructors, we can make further arrangements for him to visit on the weekends, culminating in a more rigorous course over the upcoming Summer.
-[X] Stunt (insert maximum Exalted social fuckery here): You look your baby brother up and down with a critical eye. He's still a scrawny kid, but not nearly so much as a year ago, or even before you received your Exaltations. "You want to be more, do more. I get it, believe me. Do you want to survive, too? Live a long, happy life, one where you outlive mom and dad rather than forcing them to bury their eldest son?" You pause, but not quite long enough to give him the opportunity to interject. "I can help you, but if you want that help you've got to do it right. I've got resources you can hardly imagine, and I'll make them available to you. Be patient, put in the work, and let's see what happens. What do you say?"

Having a goal to work towards is a pressure relief itself. Get him doing research and maybe some short trips and we can delay his suicide charge.

That's not really a fair example. In canon it's pretty explicit that it's only possible because the imprint isn't really the fallen and is made out of mortal soul stuff.
Angel fell once, which proves changing them is possible, buts Harry didn't reach that level.
I dont think it is. Yes, mortal soul stuff.
But Lash still had enough of Lasciel's mental history behind her that convincing her was a major lift on Dresden's part.

Of course, we're better at this than Dresden is.

COMMENTARY
Well, thats confirmation of what Charity's love language is.
If she loves you, she'll feed you.

Lord of the Flies is one hell of a deep cut; havent read that book in more than a decade.
But yeah, the way things turned out in that book struck me as remarkably fucky, even as a kid.
Especially in the light of how things like this have happened in real life
www.theguardian.com

The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months

When a group of schoolboys were marooned on an island in 1965, it turned out very differently to William Golding’s bestseller, writes Rutger Bregman

Still hilarious to see the effect on Molly's classroom
I wonder what her classmates think; this is not the first time since her return to school that Molly suddenly busts out something unexpected, from her catching that kid that fell out of the window to her decimating that swim team jock with a cutting comment.

I mean yes that is true, but I don't think Harry would have either. There is a wide space between useless and can't handle the most deadly places in the world.

Edit: Actually if he has true faith he might have managed by repealing the Reds. Then he could focus on getting the hostages somewhere we didn't have to take extra effort to protect them.

I feel this would be mistake.
If I am reading him at all correctly, this would not make him give up, but turn him to shadier means to get the power he craves.
And even if successful… I see him grow up a bitter and disappointed man. Giving him a genuine chance just sounds as better for him.

^^^
The last six months have had Molly tangling with ex-Valkyries, greater akuma, god-monsters, ancient vampires, Outsiders and naagloshii. And we've had a headsup that there's Fallen in our future. All of these are well outside the weight class we can reasonably expect Daniel to deal with, even with all the buffs we can reasonably expect to give him.

And as the son of a Knight and sister of an Infernal, he would be a priority target if he puts himself in the field.
Specifically to distract, or to attack his family in ways they cant directly defend against.

There's also the other aspects of this stuff.
Consider how much of Molly, or even Lydia's work involves just talking to people and getting information from them, or convincing them to change their minds. Dealing with temptations from various actors. Making judgements.

It doesnt really matter how well he can swing a sword or shoot a gun if a White Court vampire or an Enticer can whammy him. Or if a Coin can subvert him.
Being able to fight is only a fraction of what this life involves.

Then having to deal with the aftermath.

Molly has killed more than ten people in the last six months; Kattrin, The Will, Rhys the Ragged and his minions, Arianna and hers, Hank the skinwalker. And thats with her sheer power and skill allowing her the luxury of seeking non-lethal options
Harry had nightmares after killing people, and probably still does.

A largely normal 16/17 year old isnt ready for that.
Someone like Olivia doesnt have the choice, she's already born into it and doesnt have an angel bodyguard detail on her home.
He does.

I mean yes that is true, but I don't think Harry would have either. There is a wide space between useless and can't handle the most deadly places in the world.
Yes, he would have, actually.
He made it out of the Raith Deeps after the place was blown up, and he survived being at ground zero of the Darkhallow; he'd have made it out of the plane.

To use an analogy?
There's a difference between getting a gun for home defense, and joining a militia. As I understand it, Daniel wants to join a militia, not get a gun for home defense.

And his doing so would put both him and others at elevated risk, because he's a juicy enough target that he would attract disproportionate force.
