Birthday, Opening Night
13th of November 2006 A.D.
"Happy birthday boss!" Sarah calls dramatically lifting the the white handkerchief she must have gotten from Isabela to reveal a jumbo sized dugout with caramel chocolate glazing and sprinkles that is quickly joined by a candle. Jack the vampire, wearing a new jacket, striped pants for some reason and an easy smile pulls out a lighter to finish things off.
"You know smocking's bad for you," you joke, to cover for your surprise. After all you hadn't told anyone down here it was your birthday today besides...
As your eyes fall on him Harry shrugs to confirm your suspicions, the gesture amplified by his height. Guess I deserved that for surprising him like that.
Despite your fears the Jade Dogs do not make this weird, no undue deference of trying to outdo each other with gifts. Someone had bought beers and pizza to add to the stuff at the buffet and while the members of the Ordo are surprised to hear it is your birthday today of all times they all get into the spirit of things.'I thought you were older,' does stop being flattering the eighth or ninth time you hear it though.
"Harry do I look old you?" you walk up to him, a pair of plastic cups in hand. Sneak up might have been the better verb. Alas wizard's senses or mayhap just a detective's intuition prompt him to turn his head before you start talking.
"No.. uh... no." He was going to say something else before he caught himself you're sure.
"Let me guess, you weren't expecting them to put on something this big?" you ask, a smile creeping its way upward at the corner of your mouth. "You thought they'd stop at the drought."
"Sorry if you weren't..." he trails off, then launches into a joke. "You know most people do not get sick of birthdays until they are at least thirty."
"It's not birthdays, I'm just kind of bummed out that I can't spend it with Izzy, and Alec, Rosie, people from school, just do the stuff I have been anticipating doing the last year or two."
"Such as?" he prompts, head tipped to the side in that way he does it when asking questions of someone shorter than him, which is to say most people,
"About a third of it's illegal and half of the rest of it is embarrassing," you counter instantly
"Sounds like fun," a familiar voice chirps. Isabela had found you. She looks Harry up and down more like a lumberjack measuring a tree than anything. "You know I thought you would be scarier or something from the way some of the elders talked about you, but you're kind of a dork aren't you?"
"Power there is in being a dork," Harry answers in his best master Yoda impression, which isn't very good, or wouldn't be at least for anyone who could not feel the power gathering around him, not to lash out of course, just to make it clear that this tree is a sequoia.
"Do you want me to come with you?" he asks suddenly and way more
intensely than he had been speaking before. After ruthlessly quashing excitement at the fact you realize why he might be feeling like that. The last time he went to a vampire party things did not go well. Odds are good he's feeling even worse about 'letting' you go without him.
"The thralls could still attack tonight." You had been over this before, that is why he is still here not at home. "And we do not know what else could be lurking. I'd like to say the Station is secure, but..." Adam's face flashes though your mind's eye.
"Well if you need me call." He pulls out a phone from his duster Burny to be exact, still holding him a bit like a live grenade, but obviously having made his peace with the dark spirit he'd shared a roof with these past few months.
"Sure thing," you agree before starting the long climb back to the surface and home.

Dad calls in around five PM the day of the party, he's safe and things are going alright in Saint Louis, apparently he is there to deal with a crises of faith on the part of someone who hopefully still has a larger role to play in the fight against the Fallen. He does not say more so as to preserve their privacy, but it's very good to hear that he has been called on for counsel not battle. You do not think you could even pretend to pay attention to a party if you knew he was in danger. Not to mention that you might find yourself enjoying the the second part of the night's festivities a little too much.
The doorbell rings and in the hallway you can hear mom stop pacing, she has not even been pretending not be worried ever since she put the jawas to bed. Even Hope had been able to tell something weird was going on and it was not just that mom managed to burn the birthday cake he made for you. Daniel of course knows the whole thing and he is not happy that you and Lydia are going to a vampire party 'alone'. Your mother had not argued with him, he had just said 'no' and Daniel, ever more dutiful than you, hadn't taken that as an invitation to have a screaming argument, instead just going off to sulk. To be honest you are glad he did, no matter how gently one puts it there's no pleasant way to say 'you would be a liability'.
"Hi," you greet Lydia. "Ready to send a message?" Her choice of dress certainly does, white and leaving one shoulder bare it recalls a Roman toga, but the silver laurel crown on her head does more than 'recall' anything. It is more like a challenge. 'Behold my glory and my power, if you would contest it come forth, else bow your head before royalty'. If you recall your history correctly the actual romans didn't like kings much at least until they wound up reinventing the concept. Hopefully there aren't any scions of the late republic around.
"Yeah, this needs dealing with," she sounds so sombre and calm, like the veil of night over the city, the watchful moon above, but in her eyes there gleams a fire far less serene, you know her well. For she who has chosen to be comforter of the dead has scores to settle with those among the living who sent those unfortunate spirits wandering, whether it be Demetrious the once-vampire or those poor talents you do not even know the names of.
As Black Rider makes his smooth near silent way to the Raith Estate you wonder how best to present yourself. They would never mistake you for someone... normal, not when your soul presses upon theirs like a weight upon a neck forcing a bow, but maybe you could pretend to be out of your depth, see who might come sniffing around. Alternatively you could let your curiosity shine free, meet and greet some people before the festivities begin in earnest.
How do you wish to present at the Festival?
[] Out of your depth, see who is tempted to come to you
[] Go meet some interesting people, there will be time enough to pay back the conspirators when Lara gives the signal
[] Write in
OOC: Hopefully this does not feel like it is rushing too much.
