Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

If attempting to lock the Fae out was ever a serious consideration(remember that we only have Thomas' word for it, and he's barely 40, while the Archive has been fighting the Oblivion War for 5000 years)?
It would have been the Archive's idea, and discarded centuries ago.
Current Archive is barely a teenager. Unless you are positing that the mantle hijacks the host completely.

Arc 7 Post 7: On the Hook
On the Hook

30th of October 2006 A.D.

It is perhaps a good thing you sat down before querying your Crown as to the recording of your call with Lara Raith: "What are the plans of the initiator of this call affected by this call, both immediate and long term ones?"

The answer is a list, though the bullet points feel more like actual bullets fires from a cosmic gun, whose wheel turns with the force of fate unwinding: Maintain her control over the White Court and her Father Constantine Raith, keep her eye on her younger brother Thomas Raith, lure into the open those who would make bargains with the Forgotten Ones, consign them to a traitor's death and their knowledge to oblivion.

Holy... just Holy...
Something tells you that if you were not what you are and your crown were not what it is simply scrying the concept of the Forgotten Ones might have broken your mind in a single blow. They are the Lords of the Outside, the things behind the shifting hairline cracks in the walls of the World who had hunted the Ebenezar , worst of all they are familiar. It's like an ache behind your eyes, like a phantom itch at the back of your throat and it scares the daylights out of your for a moment.

"Molly, are you alright?" dad ask, understandably so seeing as you are burning with a corona of green flame, something you had been pacing yourself to avoid while making the car where possible.

"Er... no. I just asked my power a question, found out way more than I wanted to know about the internal power dynamics of the White Court and found out that Lara Raith is one of the good guys, at least in the sense that she does not want to let Cthulhu out of his cage. Unfortunately someone in her orbit is less sane about these things and the meeting tomorrow is about dealing with them, getting them out into the open."

Luckily for you that is enough of a bomb that he does not think to ask if there's more. Like if the mention of the forgotten horrors of the world had given you the same twinge of warning as trying to use your crown to look into its own past.

"Sorry dad, I keep dropping this stuff on you," you start, but he shakes his head.

"Molly, this 'stuff' as you put it would be happening with or without you. At most you are the bearer of bad news, though really you are more the bearer of a warning so that worse can be averted."

"The servants of the Yama Kings would not have come to Chicago without me to draw them here," you counter, unwilling to take the out.

He stops to look you up and down for a long moment, then quietly he says: "If I weren't a Knight of the Cross you would not have been targeted by the Scarecrow and its ilk, not that strong, not that many, if any of them would even have noticed you. I choose to take up the Sword knowing what it was. Every moment of every day it draws the kind of attention you are talking about and worse."

"Dad, no! You are fighting the good fight..." You cut yourself off with a shaky smile. "OK I get it. Still sucks though."

He just nods, squeezes your shoulder encouragingly. "Come on your mom's trying out a new Boeuf Stroganoff recipe for dinner."

***

It's not until after dinner, mom's culinary expertise having been proven once again, that you work up the nerve to ask the second question of a glamor shot of Madeline looking unfairly hot in a backless black dress and the kind of heels you are morally certain you would trip over. "I have faith in your sense of balance Eternal Majesty," Usum pipes up with such utter conviction he has to be teasing you

"What are the circumstances of this person's death?" you ask inwardly, pencil in hand, just in case you have to write a lot or better yet draw a floor plan of how it happened. Alas though you had been hoping for a vision all you get is five words again: Assassination by a trusted ally.

One of the people Lara is trying to lure into the open by the meeting tomorrow, you wonder. Actually what kind of people would be lured out in the open by a meeting before you met with Queen Mab but not... Oh. Enlightenment feels less like a light-bulb, more like figuring out where the coffee table is by stubbing your toe on it. Winter are the people keeping the Outside out and Mab their Queen. It would make sense for any servants of theirs who might bedevil Lara would be disinclined to show themselves when faced with someone who'd made a bargain with Mab.

I'm being used as bait. The thought pisses you off enough that you carefully set down the pencil to keep from snapping it. On the other hand... you can't really fault her the war she's fighting.

Knowing what you now know who do you take to the meeting with Lara?

OOC: I know you guys are impatient to get on to Mab, but this is new information so it makes sense to give you the chance to choose who to take now rather than use the last vote.

Interesting that there's no sense of familiarity about Forgotten Ones from our exaltation. So, they are not Yozi or (at least these ones) Neverborn. Unshaped maybe?

[X] Prepare a counter-ambush
-[X] Using one of Lara's adult video recordings ask "who among the star of this movie's acquaintances are connected to Forgotten Ones?"
-[X] Call Lydia to prepare a counter-ambush before the meeting
-[X] Using subterfuge and occult excellencies, WHWH, BSM and CCC if possible, carefully leak the hints about a fake "Hunger controlling magic potion recipe", such as potion component purchase history and development notes, and the "sales deal about to go down" to make yourself more appealing as bait.
--[X] Focus on the list revealed by the Crown's question

Seize the moment! Lara's plan is on the side of angels here, and is viable. So, let's help her here. Also, it's possible that we'll discover Thomas's girlfriend here as Nemesis host.

Who or what is stupid enough to think that ambushing us together with Lara and Thomas is a clever idea?

Unless they have a Naagloshii and 2 or more Elder Vampires this is doomed to fail

Honestly, the description of the Old Ones are practically screaming that they are the Yozi.

The Old Ones are an ancient race of demons or gods. They once ruled the mortal world, but were later cast out and locked away from reality.[2] Being primal spiritual entities, they cannot ever truly be destroyed. Not all are Outside, however; some, like the one known as the Sleeper, are on Earth, but imprisoned and entombed.[3]

Even today, they can be still active, feeding on psychic energy, primarily the fear and awareness of them present in humanity.[3] For that reason, the Venatori seek to wipe out knowledge, and thus influence, of the Old Ones in the Oblivion War.[4] The existence of the Old Ones is also one of the last things wizard apprentices learn about in a traditional apprenticeship.[3]

The Outsiders act as their servants and foot soldiers.[2]

The only known Old One so far is the Lord of the Slowest Terror.[5]

It doesn't have to be an ambush to be an attempted assassination. If they want it badly enough, have the necessary resources, and completely disregard any concern for collateral damage, there are plenty of muggle methods of killing everyone in Thomas' place of business. The Red Court has had great success with nerve gas, IIRC, and a truck bomb is relatively easy to slap together when you've got access to military grade explosives.

The Outsiders, and those who ally with them, only play by the so-called rules when it's in their best interest to keep up appearances.

Yeah, I would definitly not bet on us or Lara dying to such tricks.

We don't have a perfect defence yet, but we are certainly quite hardy.

I still reckon they're more Neverborn than Yozi.
The Yozi and their demons just aren't so antithetical to existence and the fabric of reality.
Whereas the Neverborn and their servants are WRONG and entirely willing to take any and all approaches to achieve their goals.

I'd also ask how the Yozi got out of Hell when they are Hell.

Oh, don't worry, the one responsible for Madeline's death will feel the full wrath of our glory, how dare they make us wait to negotiate Winter's surrender?

What? Not what the negotiation's about? What do you mean? :V

Keep in mind Molly's skills are not perfectly known by people who are not her, including Lara.

Let's spread the word then, mane Laura regrets thinking we are below her!

Or that she's the killer.

She is the prime suspect OOC for me right now.

So, anyway, it is in our interest to actually lay false trails to support Lara's hypothesis of "genius alchemist discovered this one weird trick that controls the Hunger". It diverts attention from our actual potion recipes, diverts attention from our actual abilities, and lets us monitor those who try to monitor us (via the Crown, if nothing else). It's not just useful at the moment, it's useful long term, I think.
Or that she's the killer.

True, but the question being asked won't reveal that, probably. We'll probably want to look at the victim's body or apartment or personal belongings for that.

[X] Plan Bait
-[X] Stick with the plan to go alone and meet Thomas there.
-[X] Use Steel Skin before entering Thomas Salon, looking freaky is not in itself a bad thing here.

Getting allies there might spoil the trap.

It's an easy swing to take, all things considered, especially when you don't actually care about the consequences of your actions. If it succeeds, great, if not, oh well, better luck next time.

Even if Lara survives, such an attack could greatly inconvenience her if the perpetrators or someone else made it known that famous, retired adult film star Lara Romany, was at the scene of the incident and definitely one of the victims. Goodbye public persona, hello new identity. For a White Court Vampire like Lara, that would be a real blow against her power and prestige.

Such an attack is not free.

If Lara is actually bombed she has all justification she might need to move heaven and earth to tear through her own Court on the search for traitors.

Every Malvora or Skavis who might question her overreach if she acts against her own people without being the official White Queen will shit up in such a case.

That's true. If we are committed to being bait, I think we should make prep work - lay down the trails to lure in the predators and such.

Er... there is, that is what scared Molly there, it feels like when she is trying to turn the crown inward.
There is a solid chance that we would look much the same as an Outsider shard or completely stripped down and reengineered puppet, at least to people who look at us in the right way. And its possible that Lara is one of the good guys... is making this particular move with as close to good intentions as is possible for her... and legitimately sees us as the most recent representative of the Outsider threat. Our little band of miscreants being fools suckered in by an Outsider's bargain, since we know that White Court Vampires can and have had their Hunger's edited into more convenient shapes that ways.

It wouldn't be much of a stretch.

What are the chances that Lara thinks that Molly is a servant of the Forgotten Ones?

EDIT: Ha! It's been a while since I was Ninja'd!

Extremly unlikely.

We are working with Michael, which is a pretty strong hint that we are not a threat to all creation.
At least not immediatly.

And we are meeting Mab, rather than avoid her like the plague.

They're not original Yozi, they're the Yozi-equivalents of one of the kalpa between Now and Creation. History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme, again and again and again. Why do you think YHWH doesn't want us scrying him and his paradoxical three-fetich self?
