Arc 7 Post 6: Family Business
Family Business

30th of October 2006 A.D.

On the one hand you feel insulted being contacted so curtly, on the other you are curious. It is not much of a contest. "Fine, I'll be there, bring some answers." So saying you click off the call with an exasperated that trails off into the kind of inarticulate grunt which would not be out of place in the mouth of your distant caveman ancestors contemplating some asshole interrupting their cave painting. Skill or not having to be diplomatic all the time is exhausting.

"I don't know how you do it dad," you shake your head.

"Sadly the answer as with most things is experience." He's sympathetic of course, but he does not tell you not to go, trusting your judgement.

Spend long enough smelling crap and you will stop noticing it, doesn't mean you should buy a house next to the septic tank, you think, but see no reason to share your bad mood with him. Instead you decide to do something productive with your time, call Thomas, to let him know about the meeting in case his sister had not and ask him he he has any idea what this is about.

"She did not tell me anything directly, not beyond mentioning that she would meet with you, but thinking back on it there is something that might have put Lara on edge. Someone killed cousin Madeline..."

His inflection does not shift on the last bit, but your reaction is automatic as it is sincere. "I'm sorry..."

"Don't be," Thomas cuts you off harshly, before his tone softens into a sigh. "Seriously, we weren't close and she was... not a good person," he finishes lamely, but you can hear between the words just fine. This Madeline has hurt Thomas, or hurt someone he cared about. He may not be popping champagne at the news of her death, but he was glad to hear of it just the same.

That's just sad, to feel that way about family, but you know Thomas isn't looking for sympathy. "How'd she die?" you ask instead.

"Bullet to the head is what I heard, maybe a hunt gone wrong, wrong for her that is. She likes, liked now I guess to play with her... food." you can practically hear the revulsion in his voice. "She was a risk taker as well, just the kind of person to let someone keep their gun so she can prove her control over them. If she thought they were under and she was wrong a point black shot though the brain would do it, especially if you don't see it coming."

Doesn't she sound lovely?
You remind yourself firmly not to judge someone on first hearing Thomas could be wrong and even if he's not no one ever knows the whole mind of another. "Where does Lara come in?"

"She doesn't as far as I can tell, not directly, not having someone in the family, high up in the family get killed in such a humiliating way is a blow to the Raith name, especially since they have not caught the person to did it." Thomas pauses, considering his next words. "At least I don;t think they found the killer. Lara might have caught them, just waiting to unveil them at a dramatic time. Turn an embarrassment into a triumph."

"She is going to publicly execute someone whose only crime was not wanting to be eaten?" Even though you are not surprised you can still be horrified.

"Only if there's a deeper plot, it wouldn't be worth much if all Lara had to show for it was some poor sap Madeline snared for the evening," He tries to backpedal and to be fair he's pretty good at it, but you can hear the doubt in his voice. There might be a part of him that wants to believe that his sister would not make an example before the court out of an innocent person, but he does not really think she'd hesitate, not when there is power on the line.

All pushing him on this would do is make it more upset you know. You might not have much experience with being happy a member of the family is dead, but you can recognize closing ranks even when you do not like the choices someone make. That is as much as Thomas knows, which leaves you at something of a loose ends, without the means to investigate... at least without most means. The crown is a phantom weight upon your brow.

OOC: And here we are, some more threads for you guys to pull on if you so choose.

[X] Ask a questions about Lara Raith and/or Medeline Raith using their online pictures
-[X] What is Lara afraid of currently?
-[X] What happened to Medeline

[X] Go alone, meet up with Thomas while there

I don't think wasting our one crown question for Lara on this makes any sense. Especially since we'll have to deal with her one way or the other later.

-[X] What secrets held by Madeline, that Lara does not want known?

Madeline death should be meaningless to Lara, she must have known something that Lara did not want spread.

As far as Molly understands the politics of the White Court the ignominious death of a scion of House Raith and one so near the White King would lead to a loss of face for the entire House.

Again I really don't think wasting our crown question for Lara on this is a good idea. We're going to be meeting her soon and may want to use it then. Not to mention later on we'll probably have some business with her, even if only to tear her down.

-[X] Don't use your question for Lara Raith yet. It could be of use later, and you may gain farther insight to her motivations after meeting her in person.

-[X] [Using the records of the talk you just had with Lara] What are the plans of the initiator of this call affected by this call, both immediate and long term ones?
-[X] [Using the photo of Madeline] What are the circumstances of this person's death?

So, we have a great focus, actually - the record of the call Lara made (speaking of, we should also have records of calls to Gard). We should be able to use it to learn what her plans pertaining to the call are - both if she is planning some sort of ambush (unlikely, but possible), and what she needs the Hunger control for. @DragonParadox are my question and focus viable?

Using records after the fact is identical to using her picture as far as convenience goes , but otherwise yes it works.

Something wrong with my link. Pictures are still not loading.
COMMENTARY
-Called it.
Something is up with the White Court if you have Raith dropping and the alleged cause of death is a gunshot to the head.
Its not impossible, just implausible, especially for a Whampire of that lineage.

Lara Raith IS afraid of something, and her stated reason for meeting is not the actual reason she's meeting.

-Thomas is still officially an outcast post-Blood Rites.
But his secret girlfriend is still Lara's assistant. That he doesn't know anything of the details of his cousin's death points to there being a significant effort to keep the details under wraps.

-A mundane murder/murderer is not hard to find.
Especially given the resources available to the White Court, and you dont need to prove it in court.
That they appear to not know how she died means one of two things:
1)They genuinely have no idea, which means someone with serious mojo is involved
2)They know, and are covering it up, which means serious Complications are involved

Regardless, this was no accident or a flubbed hunt, it was a hit.

Besides, if this had been a mundane perpetrator? They'd simply have had them picked up by the police.
White Court attack isn't visible to mundane inspection, and all you'd be able to tell is that someone shot an unarmed rich white female in the head. Thats generally open and shut if the cops get their hands on you.

Madeline Raith is Madrigal Raith's sister, and in canon Lara's cousin, which makes her the White King's niece.
Its implied she was old enough to have been girls at the same time as Lara was, which would make her quite old, though Im not sure whether we're supposed to take that literally.

Their(Madrigal and Madeline's) father was Lara's uncle, who Lara's father the White King allegedly arranged to go diving out of an airplane without a parachute for some reason or the other.
She's also a spoiled noble of a Whampire who feeds pretty indiscriminately, and with little control.

Both she and her brother canonically betray House Raith and die.

Canonically, she was working for the Black Council.
In Turn Coat she was part of the conspiracy to frame the White Court for the murder of Senior Council member Aleron LaFortier by using her access to Raith financials to lay a financial trail to an account that was allegedly supposed to be Morgan's.

The point being to start a war between the White Court and White Council.

She is directly connected to the skin walker and whoever hired him in canon.
The skin walker's invasion of Raith Manor was in order to give her cover to escape when Dresden and Luccio came to ask Lara Raith questions about White Court involvement.

She died after blowing Lara Raith up with a landmine. Lara survived it and literally eviscerated her while draining her to death.

Her death at this time when the skin walker has committed at least one murder in Chicago, and tried to frame Dresden for it
  • Could be the Black Council cleaning up loose ends after Kattrin and the Corpsetaker were both killed
  • Maybe she's one of Gorfels contacts, and the BC was snipping off that thread
  • Could be Lara discovering her scheming early and having her killed
  • Could be that she's been used as a dupe to frame the White Court, and now murdered so the Court cant disclaim her
  • It suggests that her schemes and her brother Madrigal's are connected in this AU

Either way her death is a major political event, and there are consequences for everyone in the local area.

And if Lara Raith is still perturbed, it suggests that whatever she was involved in is probably still in motion and serious enough to have consequences that could impact her House.
My guess? The naagloshii is definitely involved.
