This doesn't sound like a goodbye?I don't really see the "goodbye" in Forge as a true goodbye. It felt more like "No hard feelings as we go fight each other in the tournament", and had a bunch of unsettled feelings because of Han Jian's frustration with being passed and the whole GF friend group implosion.
It'll be interesting to see them say their goodbyes since they've grown apart and into themselves and their roles. For example, the Ji Rong duel. Sure, we'd duelled him before, but that final duel after the journey underground felt like a real duel, where they acknowledged each other, their growth, and their future paths.
It's the difference between making a promise as a little kid and making a promise, say, during college graduation.
I'd like to clarify my position, if this were a chance to bring Han Jian back into the story I'd jump on it, because he's one of our first friends and I kind of like the guy, but it's not, it's a second goodbye. And if this is actually a hook to bring him back into the story instead then it's not a goodbye, it's a hello, and that muddles the themes of this whole story arc."Hmm, I can't quite tell if you're complimenting me there," Han Jian replied, reflecting her own thoughts. "In the end though, I won't compromise who I am, that is what it means to be a cultivator, after all," he said lightly. "I wish you luck in your future endeavors as well."
"I will graciously accept your well wishes," Ling Qi replied. "And in a few hundred years. You can say that the High Chancellor of the Emerald Seas is a friend of yours."
"Ha, you've gotten ambitious, haven't you? Isn't making a claim like that a little dangerous?"
"Maybe, but a cultivator has to take a risk now and then, you know?" Ling Qi replied with a flippant grin.
"In that case, let it be said that the Marquis of Han, will not forget his youthful ties," Han Jian replied with a snort.
That's the elder who died.
